They came to our house, we are thinking of putting an addition in the back of the house, and they took measurements and came up with a rendering and a cost estimate. I just really hesitated putting a review only because, the guy was a good guy and everything but it just seemed like the proposal was crazy. The numbers were staggering and we didn't want a huge addition and it was like $112,000. It was really insane. We were disappointed. He took a while to make an appointment and he took a while to get the proposal back (longer than he said he was going to). We were looking forward to it because we were really thinking we were going to do this project, but the number was staggering because we are talking about a 12 by 18 foot room added to the existing structure, no basement or anything. It was just outrageous. And I think that it was really them that was outrageous, not the project; I think the project could be done for $40000 to $50000, not over $100,000.
Description of Work: I purchased a big deal from The Curtice Group.
I think it went really well, man who did most of the work was really nice and listened well to our requests. Scott (the man in charge) was very professional he uses spreadsheets with all the items purchase prices etc.. on them, I really appreciated that and have not gotten that much transparency from any other contractor I have worked with. He updated them regularly. The electrical came in at double the estimate and I was at first really upset about that but I think that Scott listened to me and got back with a way to work it out that worked for me and I appreciated his willingness to work with me. It took longer than I expected but I guess my expectations were just not realistic for such a big project. We now LOVE the basement and everyone who comes over just gawks at our basement and says how lucky we are to have it. It is pretty basic and straightforward but really nicely done.
Description of Work: The Curtice Group finished our unfinished concrete basement. They framed out walls 3 closets, ceiling etc.. it is now a fully finished basement with heat, carpet etc..

It went great. They were very good. They did not charge any additional fees. We misunderstood the advertisement. We wanted a renovation and the advertisement was just adding square footage. He gave us a quote based on what we asked for and it was good.

See above. Well.
Description of Work: We contacted them regarding basement design services. Scott Curtice came out and looked at the space, discussed options and provided a plan and estimate for work to be done. He was great, but the budget of the project was a bit above what we can do now. He did follow up, was professional and listened to my needs in terms of what the space needed to be. Afterwards, he was responsive and creative in his design solutions. Although we can't do anything more at this time, we are keeping the plan for the future...

He was on time for the appointment, professional and offered some good opinions and insights about finishing the basement. They were hard to get a hold of at first to schedule and appointment but I think this was just because they had a high volume after the "big deal". We were generally happy with the plan and estimate. It was very complete. It came off as a bit canned as they didn't take off the generic listed estimates for doing a bathroom even though we weren't doing one. These prices were generally taken out of the total, but there was one mistake on the spreadsheet. Not a big problem though as the spread sheet was easy to read and figure out. The estimate fell right in the middle of the three estimates we obtained so I believe it was fair. We have not yet decided who to go with for the work.
Description of Work: This is a review of the "big deal" basement remodel estimate. Steve Kelly visited our home, took measurements and provided us with a drawing and detailed estimate for finishing our basement about 2 weeks later.

Scott responded promptly, and when he visited our house he took detailed measurements. I discussed our thoughts on the potential project, and showed him some sketches I had made of what we were thinking of doing. Within a week he emailed us drawings and a detailed quote. Sadly, the drawings bore no resemblance to what we discussed (he added the addition to a section of the house we did not want touched). I followed up with Scott, and he said he'd get back to me with revised drawings. We got tired of waiting so have moved ahead with another contractor.

I purchased the Big Deal - consultation and one drawing - for a home addition/renovation from the Curtice Group. Scott was friendly and professional. He was willing to take time to talk though the various options for renovating my home (expanding in existing attic vs. finishing the basement vs. new construction at the side of the house.) He was quick to get back to me with an estimate and drawing. The estimate is thorough. The drawing is fine. It documents what we discussed, but doesn't have much detail--no dimensions for example. But, as I mentioned, the real value was talking though the various approaches and getting a builder's opinion about which was most cost-effective for my old house. Also, Scott is very willing to come back and talk through the drawing and answer any questions. I didn't do this (yet) only because I had a family emergency that prevented me from scheduling with him.

I recently purchased an old house, built in 1940. My intention is to remodel the basement as a home theater space. I write about consumer electronics professionally, so this is not just a hobby room, but is needed for my career. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean that I have a huge budget. I have to pay for all expenses out of pocket, right after having just bought the house. The house had a finished room in the basement, but it was completed in the '40s or '50s and was unsuitable for my needs. I was able to strip the old walls and ceiling myself, but need a real contractor with crew to build them back up again, complete with heavy insulation and soundproofing materials. It is essential that I isolate the room from all sounds coming from upstairs, and that I don't disturb my wife or neighbors when watching loud movies. Scott Curtice came out to the house twice for consultation, once on his own and once with his carpenter. Scott was extremely helpful, knowledgable, friendly and professional. Although he is not a specialist in soundproofing, he was able to do some research for me and provided three estimates for different ways he could complete the project considering my restricted budget. He also advised on other problems I've discovered with the house during this process. While planning this project, I have also met with or spoken to several other firms. The Curtice Group quickly stood out as a front-runner for the job. Ultimately, I decided to move forward with another firm. However, that was due almost entirely to my very specific, specialized needs, and is not a reflection on the Curtice Group. My experiences with Scott were nothing but positive.

The curtice group offered an Angies list big deal for a remodeling estimate for $100. As we had considered the possibility of adding a third bedroom above our family room, we decided to buy the deal and see if the remodeling plan would be something feasible. We sent an email to set up a time with Scott. It took several emails to set up an appointment with Scott, but he was pleasant and professional. When Scott arrived for the appointment, he was pleasant and took the time to walk through the house to make measurements, give us an idea of the scope of the remodeling project, and explained in detail what project would involve. Scott asked all the right questions, and was able to offer us some options we hadn't considered. At the end of the meeting Scott agreed to send us an email with detailed quotes and drawings of the proposed renovation. Unfortunately, the renovation project was a little out of our budget. Scott's detailed quote allowed us to see exactly where the costs were. If we have the budget to proceed with the project in the future, we will be contacting the Curtice group.

Scott came out to look at our house and learn about our plan. He was thorough, polite and seemed very knowledgeable. He took measurements of all the areas it would involve. We received the plan - which I loved - and an estimate via email. It was awesome! We are unable to afford doing the work at this time, but grateful to know what would be involved and how much it potentially would be.

At this point we have been unable to come up with a plan that seems practical and doable. We are planning to do more research and see if we can come up with a better plan.
Description of Work: This was an Angie's List Super Saver Deal. For $100 Scott came to my house to give me a price and plans for a kitchen expansion on to our back porch. He responded quickly to my email and was on time for the appointment. He took measurements and we discussed what I hoped to do. He drew up plans which he emailed back to me quickly and responded to changes I asked for. Though his estimate seemed high to me, he said it could be reduced with changes and cutbacks to the project. He was very pleasant to work with.

We had four estimates prior to starting the job, and Scott's was by far the most reasonable base price. Base price meaning several of the contractors that gave estimates including Scott warned us that some of the existing structures might not be up to code and might have to be replaced, upping the initial cost estimate, however they wouldn't know until after demolition was completed. Scott was on time for the estimate, friendly, professional and willing to work with us to keep some of the existing work to save money while being up front with us about what had to be changed for it to pass inspection. We hired Scott soon after receiving his itemized spreadsheet. He was very responsive to emails, phone calls and questions from the start. We had a nightmare experience with our upstairs bathroom previously where the contractor never returned calls, so this was refreshing! I stay home full time with my young children, so I was here to witness most of the work over the course of the three months it took to complete. Scott's sub-contractors were friendly and on time. For the most part, they were respectful of our house and the fact that I was upstairs with the kids. They even tried their best to work around nap time with the loudest noise, although that wasn't always possible. As Scott predicted, the project hit a few snags when demolition revealed mold on some of the walls and we realized the existing light structure we had planned to re-use was not able to be salvaged. We also had to purchase a new walk-through garage door because the town inspector required either the door or an egress window be installed for a proper fire escape. Mold remediation, recessed lighting, plastering ceilings, and the new door upped the original base price quote, but still brought Scott's quote in BELOW the starting quote from the other three estimates we got. Scott also worked with us to take a few smaller items we could do ourselves out of the budget to balance the cost a bit. Because of these additional unforeseen projects, the whole process ran a little over the previously estimated time frame, but that was to be expected. We would definitely hire Scott and his team again. We are really enjoying our new playroom/family room basement area and LOVING finally having a second beautiful bathroom in this house!
Description of Work: We hired Scott to refinish our partially finished basement and add a second bathroom and utility room in the basement.

Scott's quote was about 3-4 times as high as all the other quotes I got. His bid was for $8,000, whereas the other bids I got were for approximately $2,000. He provided a spreadsheet that has a column for "days of direct labor" and then a separate column for the cost of materials. According to his spreadsheet, it will take: --1 day to put in bathroom vanity (should take an hour)--1 day to "Bring all old fixtures to front porch to be recycled" (should take 5 minutes)--1 day to "Fill in drywall as needed" (should take a couple of hours at most to spackle any areas with holes, such as where towel racks were replaced)--disconnecting plumbing for sink cost $1800 (this is separate from the "1 day" to replace the vanity--i.e., the sink)--$2500 to replace my hot water heater in basement (a 40 gallon water heater costs ~$500-$800 -- so for a total cost of $2500, Scott is saying it takes ~$2000 of labor to replace it --or 20 hours at $100/hour! Note that I actually got it replaced (cost of new tank + labor) for $1300--or about 5 hours of work after the cost of the tank) As I told him, he must have verrrrrrrryyyy slow workers, if they need 1 day to drag my old toilet and sink to the porch. His daily charge is $520--or $65/hour for 8 hours; but of course, when you take 6 days to do the work, you can afford a lower hourly rate!

They started in February and finished in April. We paid in installments. Scott was very value added being the general contractor and the owner. Even though he didn't do the work, he was very involved in the process and helped out quite a bit. He even found time to go to the tile store. We are pretty happy with the work that was done. Scott Curtice is terrific, and I would not hesitate to recommend him (in fact, I already have to a number of my friends looking to do renovation work). His price was fair (on par with other estimates I received), but what set him apart that led us to hire him to do the work was his responsiveness and attention to detail. We had a finished basement already, but it was just one large room. We were looking to partition it off to create a bedroom and add a full bathroom as well. He came over the first time to initially assess our project, then met us in person again with a layout design and to go over his estimate in detail. He and his subcontractors were very professional. My husband was especially happy that at the end of each workday, they cleaned up the area rather than leaving behind a mess (even though no one was even going down to the basement while the project was going on). Scott was very easy to reach the whole time and was very proactive - he liked to set up weekly meetings during the project to update us. He also was very accommodating of our schedule and worked around it in terms of setting up the meetings and bringing other people in. The quality of the work was excellent, he was able to complete it in a timely manner, and overall, we were extremely pleased, nothing at all I can even complain about!

Scott is great to work with and the most professional contractor I have dealt with over 10 years of home renovations around the country. He was very detailed in his upfront bid. He spent a lot of time with us just scoping the initial work and helping us get it down into the right price range. Once the job was underway, he responded to emails 7 days a week, usually within minutes. Any problems on the job due to the subs were dealt with promptly and on his own dime. Every week he sent a spreadsheet detailing costs and comparing them to the initial plan. At the end he came in under budget. I will definitely work with Scott again in the future.
Description of Work: Removal of structural wall, complete remodel of kitchen (including moving plumbing, removing decorative walls, adding lighting, etc.)
He was professional from the very beginning and all through the job, had excellent suggestions. We were trying to live in this small space while he was remodeling and he did his very best to keep things comfortable for us and for our dogs.
Description of Work: Scott remodeled our bathroom, installed whirlpool and an extra large shower with bench. He did a perfect job on the tiling. The bathroom is gorgeous, all new fixtures, heater, replaced all windows in the condo, provided superp painter, installed some track lighting in living room. We got everything we paid for and he was professional and excellent to work with. I would highly recommend The Curtice Group. AE Haley, Brookline, MA.

The original closet in our master bedroom was a small (and we mean SMALL!) space under a sloped roof across one side of the room. There was about three additional feet of virtually wasted space in front of it before one reached the door to the room. We decided to extend the outer wall of the closet out about three feet to the edge of that door. In our original design, we thought the clothes rod would need to go one direction, and this would added about 50 percent to the original space. Scott thought for a moment and then made a simple suggestion to turn the rods the opposite direction. This ultimately more than doubled the existing space! His professionalism was awesome! He called and/or emailed immediately to every one of our requests. He was on time every day, and worked hard the whole time. He did the construction work himself, and brought in experts to do the electrical and plastering, so those jobs were excellent as well. He even came back an extra day to make a small change we requested. It's a statement to his integrity that he only charged an amended cost. He came in under his original estimate and actually lowered the price - we never would have known and theoretically he could have kept the difference. We've already asked him to quote on some additional jobs - so, YES, we will be using him again and will recommend him to anyone else who's looking to remodel. This was a relatively small job, but worth every penny. Future jobs for us will undoubtedly be greater.
Description of Work: Scott extended a very small closet in the master bedroom to a walk-in - and suggested a change to our plan that made our original thought for the space almost double in usefulness.
