Dave is a great contractor to work with, he was prompt to return calls from the beginning and did an incredible job on our roof. We're very happy with the new roof and the price was solid. I would recommend Dave to anyone in need of a roof, his knowledge and experience is appreciated!

Dave and his crew did an excellent job (installation and cleanup). Price and Dave's company's reputation was the key selling points. I signed the contract on a Tuesday. The material was delivered that afternoon. Dave's crew had the roof stripped and a new roof installed the next day. A small crew had to come back the following day to finish the shed and that was due to heavy rain the day before.

Mr Smith was punctual in coming to see the building, and very friendly and professional demeanor. He assessed a higher price than most, but he is the only one who was punctual and he was honest about the issues. So we went with him. Most will quote low then come in high anyway. He did not, the price was the price. He was punctual in doing the work and did far more than we had expected - we had asked for the main trouble areas but his crew did the entire roof perimeter! They did an excellent job too. More than worth the cost. Not only would we work with him again, we are already working with him on some work for this summer. We look forward to working with him again.

Terrific. Came within 2 days of call to provide estimate. Bid was significantly lower than 2 competitive bids. Original estimate of when work would be performed was accurate (10 weeks). All dealings with company were pleasant and professional. Work was completed in one day and they were VERY meticulous about cleanup.

I had a loose shingle high on the roof. They fixed it. This is a good deal if you know you have a minor repair in need of mending. Basically good for you, and they get paid for doing a quote for the additional "big repairs" that almost every roof "needs" at some point. Dave was very responsive by phone and text. The only thing I found strange is that I got my roof inspection report by text message.

They provided a quote of $2500. I gave them a $1000 deposit on Aug. 27 and then they began work on Sept. 2 in which I paid in full. They still haven't finished the work and it's worse than it was before they started working. When it rains there is more water leaking through.
Description of Work: They told me it would be a one day job to put a rubber roof on because it was leaking initially and it's been over two weeks and they still haven't fixed it.

Response from D H Smith Inc. Roofing
We replaced a small flat roof with rubber after a rain storm. I was called and told it leaked. I sent my people back they found the siding was the problem, we repaired it at no additional cost. There was no way to know the siding was the problem.

David Smith provided a very reasonable estimate for repair work to our winter-damaged roof, and stuck to the estimate. He and his crew were polite, easy to work with and explained all the work being done clearly. The flashing looks better than it did before the ice dams, and after a few big rain events I am confident that it is totally water tight. It was a little difficult to find an experienced roofer willing to do repairs, as opposed to selling us an entire new roof, so I was very glad to find him. We would not hesitate to use him again.
Description of Work: Repaired flashing that had been damaged by ice dams and by (a different) snow removal company, and installed new rafter/reshingled small roof that had been damaged by the weight of winter snow. Also waterproofed around pipes that extended through small roof.

Overall this roof work went well. Dave was punctual and accessible while we were interviewing and deciding which roofer to select. He stopped by the house a total of 3 times to answer various questions. His estimate included re-leading three chimneys- one of the other companies only built one chimney into the estimate and would have tacked on a hefty extra charge if others needed re-leading. We have four chimneys... Once hired to do the job, I called him 3 or 4 times as the work was being done. Dave always picked up or returned calls quickly and answered questions thoroughly. His crew seemed to work quickly enough and picked up and tidied up at the end of each day. About 5 days were spent on the roof- it was a fairly big project. His guys were pleasant or, at least quiet. We found occasional random debris, including some nails after all was done, but this was a fall job and there were lots of leaves. If I were paying nearly double for one of the other companies to do this roof, I'd have raised a stink. There was a misunderstanding about the flat roof resealing, and this was addressed quickly. Another curious moment- at the outset, Dave recommended a 30 year architectural shingle brand that I accidentally found had a number of complaints. In fairness, I don't know that the particular line he was recommending had experienced an unusual number of complaints, but asked about different brands none-the-less. Dave recommended a brand that passed the smell-test and didn't change the price-point. I guess the take-home is "research everything" and "ask questions". If you get a poor product on your roof, the supply company will typically just replace the product- if even that. You may still be stuck with paying for the labor. Ouch. In closing (the job, as well as my observations) Steve, who I guess was the foreman came to the property that last day to finish the rubber roof stuff. On packing up, he shared his impressions of the roof and the job and left me with a reassuring, "We own the roof for the next 10 years... if you find a problem, give us a call." We have had a couple of good rains and 6-8 inches of snow followed by a quick thaw, and the roof has held. Time will tell if the work and product were worth it, but for now, I am happy with the new roof and satisfied that the price was fair and that DH Smith was a good pick. (Historic homeowners please note- our home is of advanced age, but was reconditioned in the 1980's. The roof decks were in great shape and probably largely replaced back then.)
Description of Work: Removed and re-shingled main roof and porch roof. Seal-serviced flat rubber roof.

Dave came out for an estimate for both our rear roof and garage. Together we decided the rear roof was the priority and the garage could last a bit longer if we didn't want to replace it at this time. A date was scheduled and Dave & crew scraped off the old roof and installed a new one over 1.5 days. They took very good care to cover our plants and clean up after themselves. The crew was a friendly group of guys who answered all of our questions and were professional on the job site. We will be giving Dave a call in the future for further roofing, gutter, and siding needs.
Description of Work: Dave and his crew replaced our rear roof and patched up some mortar on our chimney cap.

Dave Smith communicated well with us throughout all phases of the project and was very responsive to any questions or issues we had. His crew was friendly, professional and did high quality work. They also took extra care to not damage our shrubs and gardens and cleaned up thoroughly afterwards. Our old roof leaked in several areas. So far our new roof has been through several heavy rain storms and shows no evidence of any leaks. Dave and his crew responded immediately to fix a sky light that was leaky. The new roof looks great and we would highly recommend Dave Smith for any roof work.
Description of Work: Old double-tlayer roof was removed down to the plywood. Ice and water barrier installed on bottom edge of all roof surfaces, deck armor installed on remaining areas, 30 year asphalt shingles installed, new flashings put around all chimneys, vents, walls and skylights (8 skylights). 10 yr guarantee on workmanship. All garden and lawn areas below active work was spread with tarps, garden plantings were shielded as necessary. All cleanup of loose nails, shingles etc. was done.

We have a garage barn and they did the entire re-shingling of the roof. However, lot of the boards underneath it had holes and it was sagging a little bit and they did nothing to repair it. They simply put the new shingles on. There was debris and they never cleaned up and I remember getting a flat tire because we had roofing nails in the driveway. I don’t know how much we spent for the roofing work because we had hired a contractor and we had a bunch of work done. They should have reported the trouble with the roofing boards to the contractor and addressed those issues and not just put the shingles on and they certainly should have done a better cleanup job. I think the price was reasonable or I wouldn’t have gone with them. The quality of their service was terrible. We will never use them again.

We were so impressed with DH Smith. I contacted David for an estimate to replace a roof during the P&S negotiation on a house we are purchasing, so timing was tight. He went to the house the next day, and emailed me a detailed quote that same day. He called to follow up and when I needed slight adjustments to the quote, he did so immediately and sent a new estimate. His explanations were detailed and thorough, and he spent a lot of time with me over the phone explaining their process to replace the roof. When I had another question regarding a structural issue at the house, he got me in touch with an expert in that area so I could get an answer immediately. I was really happy with DH Smith's responsiveness, customer service and professionalism, and would not hesitate to contact them again.

Dave was professional and prompt in performing and providing written estimate. Rubber roof seems to be installed well. Did not schedule work in advance, just called 7am the day of work to let me know it would be done. Contract did not specify advance notice. Somewhat of a conflict with painting work in progress at the time, and workers dirtied deck which had been cleaned in preparation for staining (as reported to me by painter). Used white aluminum trim which does not match house trim, suggested I have it painted.
Description of Work: Remove old tar and gravel roof on 2nd floor porch and basement entrance way, replace with rubber membrane roof, install aluminum trim.

They were phenomenal. They were prompt, gave us a quote and stuck with it. They were just very professional. They were a joy to work with and were nice & responsible. They did a fantastic job. They cleaned up. Our's leaked just a hair right after the work was done, which we were told might happen, and they came out right away. They do a fantastic job. They told us all of the options that we had. They helped us decide, and we didn't choose the most expensive one, and they didn't care.
