I noticed the base of an oak tree had some rot around the base and thought it needed to be removed. I called Marquis and they made an appointment to check it out for a couple of days later. The estimator was there when I arrived home from work. He was pleasant and professional. He checked out the tree and indicated that it would probably stay upright for the rest of my life and if it fell, it would fall toward the street and not land on the house. He gave an estimate of $1,500 to remove the tree if we opted to go that way because they wouldn't be able to use the crane. How often do you hear of a tree guy saying the tree doesn't need to come down?
Description of Work: Provided advice on whether an oak tree needed to be removed as well as an estimate on the cost.

He came and talked with us about a tree that someone else had recommended to come down. He was very helpful to say that the tree doesn't need to come down. It's not very often that you get somebody coming in and saying that you don't need to have work done. He said that the trees are in good shape. He was very responsive and came out on time.

John Marquis came out on time and was very professional. After a lengthy discussion he suggested the best approach was to hire a crane crew for the day and direct them as needed. The crew was there on time and setup immediately after learning which trees were our priority in removing. The crew consisted of 4 men: crane operator and crew lead (Justin), a tree climber and two operating the large (24") chipper. Setting up the crane takes about 45 minutes so it's key to know exactly where to place it based on which trees are coming down. For us, based on the trees we wanted taken down and which trees we wanted left standing, they had to move the crane 3 times. Once the crane is in place the crew can take down 100'+ white pine in about 10 to 15 minutes. A significant issue for us was dragging the existing downed trees from deep within the woods which took a significant amount of time and required some expert crane control by Justin. At the end of the day they had filled 10 full size chip trucks and stacked a dozen 30' logs which is testament to the amount of wood they took out. Our overall experience with Justin's crew was excellent. They were able to get to all of the trees we wanted removed plus many more. They also had to work hard to not disturb several deciduous trees that we did not want removed. Marquis was not the cheapest quote we had but they were close and we believe they are worth the extra money. We would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: We needed four 100'+ white pines that came down during Sandy removed. In addition we wanted about 15 other 100'+ white pines taken down.

Two very sick trees in my neighbor's yard were overhanging my property, and branches kept falling on the cars parked in the driveway. Two other trees, not diseased but further down the property line, needed trimming. I secured verbal permission from my neighbor to cut down the dying ones and trim the others. I contacted Marquis Tree on 10/26 right before hurricane Sandy; it was understandable that the estimate visit couldn’t be scheduled immediately. That job was done on 11/07 but Thanksgiving intervened so the appointment for actual work could not be made. After many phone calls, the job was scheduled and the workers appeared right on time. It was only then, however, that I was told written permission was necessary from my neighbor. Once this was sorted out, the workers proceeded and did a great job bringing down the diseased trees, trimming the other trees, and removing the wood. Assumptions were made on both sides about the requirements of permission. Neither the company representatives nor I asked the right questions, so delays occurred. This oversight can and should be corrected for future customers.

I called Marquis to clean up significant storm damage and to remove and/or prune many other trees on my property. They came out promptly to provide an estimate. Due to the amount of work, they gave me a break on the rate for the crew. I had a dedicated crew for 4 days. The crew arrived on time and ready for work. They were friendly and easy to talk to. They worked quickly and efficiently but also safely. Due to access issues on my property, several trees needed to be climbed to complete the work. Again, the climbing was done quickly, efficiently and safely. At the end of each day, the crew cleaned up all debris. I asked that some of the wood be left for firewood. The crew cut the logs to the length I specified and even stacked them off to the side of the yard. Shortly after this work was completed I had to call Marquis back to clean up more storm damaged trees. I would not hesitate to call them again.

The estimate was too high and they weren’t willing to work with us on the price or give us any discount even though we were Angie’s List member. I am sorry that the member felt the quote was to high. However the quote specifically stated the price and then (minus 5% Angie's List Discount) directly after the price. I am comfortable with the quoted price. We can't always be the least expensive. We do not cut corners on safety or insurance.

They started around 8AM and finished by 11:30AM, doing a fine job of cleaning up afterwards. No one was harmed or even inconvenienced too much while they worked, carefully and methodically, to remove an extremely large, old tree. We had only one difficulty, which was a failure to get a bill from them in a timely manner after the job. We got two calls from John Marquis himself, and it seemed clear to us that he was worried we were not going to pay for the work. We insisted on receiving either a paper or an emailed bill with all details spelled out, including how much time the police detail was actually used for. (The estimate was for 8 hours, but the detail was actually only present on the job for 4. I was home at the time and knew when they arrived and when they left.) He must have realized that his overworked (due to the high volume of business after two big storms) staff had failed to send a detailed bill after the job, and emailed it right away. In addition, both my husband and I had assumed that the other had inquired by phone as to why we hadn't received the detailed bill. Clearly non- or miscommunication had occurred, but once we got the emailed bill, examined it, and spoke to John, the bill was paid to everyone's satisfaction. Aside from the minor billing mishaps, which were understandable given the circumstances, they did exactly what they contracted with us to do, safely, reliably, and professionally, and I would definitely hire Marquis again to handle tree pruning or removal.
Description of Work: After the two big storms of Fall 2011, Marquis Tree Service was inundated with business and contractual obligations to NY/NJ and parts of New England. Nevertheless, the staff and John Marquis were unfailingly professional, patient, and polite, always returning calls and giving us as accurate a prediction as possible as to when they could schedule and complete the tree removal job. Because of the Angie's List coupon and their quote, professionalism, and our expectations of their expertise, we ended up going with Marquis over several other qualified professional tree services. As to our particular job, a beech that was more than 100 years old dropped a very large limb onto our car and totaled it. After the second storm, another limb was leaning on the house and we could no longer use our driveway or walk under that tree. We had the additional pressure of no overnight street parking after November. In addition, the tree was close to a busy street and the power and phone lines. A crane and rented police detail would be necessary, pushing the job to the $3500 or more estimate.

I was in a bit of a pinch. I needed to have the trees removed because I had other contract work depending on their removal. I had scheduled another tree company, but that appointment was postponed due to Hurricane Sandy. After a few weeks of not rescheduling, I contacted Marquis. John was quite understanding of the situation and promised to fit me in that week...quote was slightly higher for work performed, but worth the money to get it taken care of. As promised, three days later the crew was on site to take the trees down. All in all, I was happy to have them out there and they did a fine job. My only complaint is that rather than tensioning and felling the trees, they cut the trunks to firewood length while the tree was still vertical (though most were much larger than I had specified). The result was a some pretty significant divots in the lawn that I'll have to spend a fair amount of time repairing. Given my time constraints and their willingness to prioritize my job, I'd have no problem recommended them. Next time I will be more thorough in the process discussion so my lawn isn't turned into a mine field again.

They didn't show up on Friday as planned, and instead to our surprise where here first thing Saturday morning. The crew was quick and clean, very professional. Put boards on the grass to make sure turning their ditchwhich(bobcat looking thing) didn't tear up the grass. They took a huge tree out in a matter of a couple hours, then raked the grass and blew away the small debris. Superstar service!
Description of Work: A big tree fell in our backyard due to Hurricaine Sandy. I called for a quote and they were slammed. Called back 2 days later when things were calmer. Someone came to my house the same day to look at the job. Gave a quote real-time that seemed very fair considering the size and the circumstances. He said they would get it done within 2 days.

They do a very neat job trimming very large trees. You can't tell they were even there after they leave - they clean up so well. They are also very well-priced. The tree service I had been using previously gave me a estimate that was $220 higher than what Marquis estimated. I thought the Marquis price was the fairer value and I was right. They also recommended a company, Sav-a-Tree, to fertilize / treat my trees, which was really helpful.

I hired them to take out three pine trees. I have a 400 lb cement reindeer. They avoided this when taking the trees down. They brought in a crane to take it out. They used plywood in the driveway and lawn to ensure that they were protecting it. They asked to remove it, but I wasn't comfortable with it. So, they went out of their way to ensure it was protected. They also took down a cherry tree in my front yard. They attempted to stabilize the tree branches, but I was unable to manage it. They actually took that down and are doing stump grinding for free. Everything worked out well. The cleanup was perfect, and crew was professional. I didn't have to wait for them to do a thorough job removing logs, raking grass, removing debris. You'd never know they were there except for the fact that it looks more beautiful, and I now have peace of mind. The price was very reasonable.

Our large oak tree had a section of branches hanging precariously over our roof to the point where it was touching. Marquis Tree came highly recommended from several other people, so I gave them a call. They drove by the house to look at the tree during the day, and left an estimate in my mailbox for me. After getting another estimate that was almost $300 more than Marquis' estimate, I decided to go with Marquis. They gave me a time when the crew would show up, and they came within the time window. They clearly explained what they were going to cut, and got right to work. They did a great job. The tree looks much better now!

Normally when we hire a tree service, we walk around with the estimator and get an itemized estimate for specific work. Two of the three companies that came out suggested that there was enough work that it was best to just hire a crew for the day and direct them. The third company produced an itemized estimate that came to about the same amount of money. We decided to go with a crew from Marquis. A 3-man crew arrived early with a bucket and a chipper. The crew chief went around the yard with me to evaulate what we should trim and which trees we should remove (including trees broken by the Halloween 2011 storm). A lot of the trees were in the backyard, so they spent a lot of time on ropes. The cuts were esthetically done, the removals left minimal stumps. Clean up was thorough, with rakes and blowers. The price seemed reasonable, considering the man-hours and equipment involved. Living in the woods, we have need for tree work every couple of years. We will very likely bring Marquis in for the next job, and have already recommended them to a friend.

We have lots of big old shade trees and for $1,400 we got an expert arborist, his assistant, a bucket truck and an industrial chipper for the whole day. They did a terrific job of pruning and shaping all of our trees. They worked very hard, climbing trees (not all were accessible from the bucket truck) and bringing down a major amount of dead wood and limbs that were too close to the house. I love our trees and they look much better. This week, we had heavy winds and for the first time in ages, no limbs came down and I just feel safer about being surrounded by large old trees, much as I love them. Marquis was terrific to deal with....I had used them 10 years ago and have always been pleased with their work... I would recommend them to anyone.

Outstanding! Superb Folks. I had never used Marquis Tree before but a friend of mine used them to take down some huge pines and I saw the video of their guys literally flying through the air on a rope as the top half of a huge pine but was taken over the roof of the house and put down next to it. I knew my friend had been very pleased with their work and price so I called and asked for a quote. The owner John Marquis was out in two days to meet with me at my convenience. I walked John around and described everything that needed to be done and he suggested I hire the three guys and 2 trucks for the day and they would cut whatever I asked them to cut. That made much more sense that the itemized quote I got from someone else that ended up more than doubt the Marquis quote. I told them I would like to get it done quickly but there was no urgency. They called the next day to say they had a cancellation and could do it Friday if that worked for me. It did and I waas told they would be at the house at 8. They showed up at 8, started working and never stopped. Before they started on a tree they asked me to tell them what I wanted done and after they finished a tree they would ask me to come out and let them know if that was enough or if more should be cut. This way there were no surprises. Often I would ask their opinion of whether a limb should come down and they would say yes it was dead or dying or cracked or no it could probably do fine for a few more years. They were very judicious in their advice. They left a very clean yard and were a pleasure.
Description of Work: They provided a three man crew and two trucks, one was a chipper that ate really big logs (as well as small branches and everything else), and the other was a bucket truck that allowed a man to go very high up and out away from the driveway. They took down several tall large trees and heavily pruned several other tall old trees (probably 50 - 60 ' high). They chipped everything, swept and cleaned up after every tree was finished and did a superb job. The men were on time and very nice and cooperative. They asked what I wanted cut and offered suggestions when I asked for them. I don't think they ever stopped for lunch! They did a huge amount of work in 7 hours and were a pleasure to have on the property. I have used many tree services and these guys were far and away the most reasonably priced, hard working and cooperative. I had another quote for about the same amount of work that was almost doube this price (and that quote from from a tree service that is considered reasonable).

Marquis was great. While still pricey, they came in much lower than other estimates we got. They showed up right on time and were able to get everything done in one day. They were very efficient and careful when removing the trees. I was worried we'd have some damage in our yard or driveway due to the heavy equipment but they knew what they were doing. I'd definitely hire them again.
Description of Work: Marquis removed 16 trees (mostly pine) from our yard. 7 were large and very close to the house. The others were small. Marquis brought in a crane and a mulcher to aid in the removal. At our direction they left a nice big pile of mulch for us to use in our yard.
