This project was needed because one of the old walls and the steps had been damaged when the main sewer line was replaced. The walls were also 55 years old, and the concrete blocks were crumbling in places. I met with several contractors to look at options, and chose Oliver Enterprises because of the quality of their stone work, and their general reputation. Due to of a change in the schedule of another project, work was begun and completed within 2 weeks of the signing of the contract, and well before the start date proposed in the contract. Jeff Oliver was helpful in providing examples of the different styles of masonry, and patient when I changed my mind. Demolition and excavation was quickly accomplished using a small digger, which was confidently operated in the narrow driveway. Carefully working around the new sewer line, the crew poured the footings and built up the walls. Using granite steppers instead of masonry steps had reduced the estimate somewhat, however the number of steps needed had to be increased during the course of the project, adding some expense over the agreed price. Oliver also added some insulation on top of the sewer line to prevent freezing. These changes were discussed and approved by me. The crew finished by filling the area behind the walls with dirt, and added a layer of topsoil. They replanted the rhododendron and cleaned up nicely. Jeff Oliver went above and beyond by helping me dig out the drain at the bottom of the driveway which had become filled with accumulated dirt and leaves. All in all, it was a highly satisfactory experience, and I am very pleased with my new walls and steps.
Description of Work: Demolish two existing concrete block retaining walls, part of walkway and steps. Construct replacement walls and steps, using cut stone and granite steppers, and ensuring proper drainage.

This was a sizeable project with two separate contractors involved. Jeff did a great job of coordinating with the other contractor that installed the sewer line that ran under the driveway. The new walls and steps turned out beautifully. Setting the concrete drywell was a difficult task and it not go perfectly and because of that there were some complications with the driveway. The reason for the "A" rating is that Jeff did an outstanding job of correcting the issues. I have done several major construction projects and I know from experience that things don't always go as planned but its how you address those problems that make or break the project. Jeff is a true professional and I would highly recommend Oliver Enterprises to anyone. We have another project in the future and they will be my first call.
Description of Work: Removed an old deteriorating stone wall and concrete driveway and part of the garage slab. Worked in conjunction with another contractor to replace our sewer pipe. Built a new fieldstone retaining wall and sitting height wall with 2 granite steps, a new driveway twice as wide as the old one with a drywell. (my driveway slopes down to a 1 car garage under the house). Repaired a 2' x 15' area of concrete slab in the garage.

Jeff Oliver was a real pleasure to work with. Our total job was done in 4 days which was much quicker than we expected for so much work. He was very easy to reach by phone and included us in the process the entire way. We appreciated the fact that he talked through each decision with us so as to not waist our time or money. He was concientious of the fact that we had a limited budget but also wanted to use materials that were durable and would withstand the test of time. He often oversaw the project himself stopping by on a number of occasions. We would absolutely use Oliver Enterprises again.
Description of Work: Oliver Enterprises removed all overgrown shrubs and large spruce tree in our front yard as well as an overgrown patch of flowers, trees and shrubs in our backyard. The front shrubs were then all replaced and mulch was laid. Moss and grass seed were spread in front yard and back patch. Oliver also dug out our front walkway and replaced it with aggregated concrete and patched our front steps and retaining wall. Lastly, they contracted painters to sand down and paint the retaining wall, steps and entire front porch and railings.

I contacted Oliver Enterprises of Woburn, MA recently for a quote for excavation, a new deck and a new paver patio. My initial interactions with Jeff Oliver were very good and we quickly came to an agreement on the project. When I tried to set up a time to drop off the contract and deposit however, I mentioned that I had their Angie's List coupon which entitled me to 10% off their masonry services (coupon was for jobs over 5k - my total job was going to be 26k and the masonry portion was 9k). The office personnel (Suzette) wasn't sure how to handle the coupon so she spoke with Jeff and then informed me that they had already given me their "rock bottom" price and the coupon couldn't be used. I questioned why not as I believe my job clearly qualified, and she agreed but said they need to know upfront if someone is an Angie's List when quoting, to which I informed her Jeff did know this as that was one of the first questions he asked me ("Where did you hear about us?"). This left me with the clear impression that the coupon could only be used when they had adjusted their pricing in advance to accomodate the "savings". Throughout the initial quoting process I removed two add-ons (gas firepit, plantings) but I never questioned or tried to negotiate a lower price for the deck, excavation or patio. So I found it hard to believe that right now, when contractors are extremely busy, that I received "rock bottom" pricing without any negotiation on my part. Suzette said she would followup with Jeff once more to figure out what could be done. The following day I received an email simply stating they no longer were interested in my project. I was left feeling that because I had tried to use a coupon which they widely advertise on Angie's List they refused to do my project. They have since updated to wording on their coupon twice (3 versions of the coupon in 3 days) to be more clear to customers identifying themselves as Angie's List members to receive the discount. Even with the most recent wording my project would still qualify. What bothers me the most is that I wanted to use them regardless of the coupon, but figured I should at least ask about it because it was clearly being advertised. It was frustrating and insulting to be dropped as a potential customer for what appeared to be my attempt to use a coupon that a business uses to market itself and gain customers. I had high hopes for this business and felt confident they could've done a good job on my project. Their integrity in this matter however, left me uncomfortable to use or recommend them.

Response from Oliver Enterprises
I was very surprised and disappointed at how [member name removed] responded during this process. I met with her and gave her ideas, advice, and a very timely estimate. She decided to hire us immediately and I then produced a contract for an amount that we both agreed upon in writing. I unfortunately had a family emergency at this point . She had questions about a coupon and was told that my mother passed away and I could not be reached. This was the day of the funeral services. She then insisted on immediate answers which my office manager could not give. This was not a priority for me on this day. I was hoping she would understand. The reason I decided not to take this job had absolutely nothing to do with a coupon. Oliver Enterprises , like our customers holds the right to work for who we know we will work well with, communicate well with and can make happy in the end. This was not how we felt in this situation. We make a pledge to be responsive , knowledgeable, and stand behind our work. Our customers as you can read from our reviews, are proof of this. They were great. They were actually very prompt, so when they said they would be there they were there. There was just a miscommunication with the original quote and the final bill. They were actually punctual, very respectful, and honest. He was just a very nice guy and I am very happy with that. Their services was great. For the price, they had one of the lowest bids for the lawn.

We are extremely happy with the results. The new patio looks great and the new drainage is working very well. The stone finish in the concrete recommended by Oliver looks really nice. The lawn has regrown. Oliver's team started the project on time, his team was very professional and kept us informed. His team kept the site safe which we appreciated with having a young child.

Jeff was very professional and thorough. He spent the time to discuss the details and scope of the job. The project entailed removing an old 100 foot long 2 ft high retaining wall and replacing it with a new one. His crew arrived on time, were pleasant, cleaned up after themselves and were very meticulous. They even finished the job ahead of schedule. Overall I'm really happy with the results.

Always communicated and arrived for site visits punctually. Offered good ideas for fully correcting/restoring as well as for taking a phased approach. In the end, having already gone somewhat over budget on construction, couldn't proceed with project now. Since I've seen lots of Oliver work in my neighborhood, and based on this experience, would use in the future.
Description of Work: Gave estimate and revisions to restore yard after construction of addition with full basement left excavated material from basement hole spread around backyard (bad decision on my part) and the yard generally a total mess. Also needed (by original plan) to restore field stone wall that had come down to allow access to construction equipment, and to restore as much of preexisting sprinkler system was lost to construction.

They did a nice job, it looks great and they told us how to care for it. Access to our back yard was difficult, and there wasn't much extra space to work in. My only complaint is that they didn't clean up thoroughly and I had to spend time sweeping and hosing down the patio and stone wall. I'd still hire them again, but just be sure that I mentioned this.

My first email to the company was answered very quickly, followed by a very pleasant phone conversation with Jimmy Faiola. He went to view the property (a rental), took pictures and gave me an estimate to clean up the "jungle"and a separate price to take the tree down.. His estimate was 2nd to the lowest. I checked out all the excellent reviews of his company on Angies list along with other companies under consideration. After deciding to hire Oliver Enterprises I spoke with Mr. Faiola again and set up the time frame for the work. Jimmy is a very friendly, outgoing easy to talk with gentleman. I found him to be totally honest and open. I started searching for a company to do the huge job a bit late in the fall season so I was concerned that I wouldn't find anyone so late. But the date was set for just 3 weeks away. However, to my surprise and delight Mr.Faiola called me a week later saying they would be on the job the next day. Even though the weather was freezing cold they got everything done in one day.About mid day I got a kinda frantic phone call from Mr.Faiola telling me a neighbor had arrived on the scene and was insisting that they were to clean-up his yard also. This was, of course ridiculous but I was glad that I was called. I went by to check out the work and found not even a stray leaf. Everything was perfectly trimmed and cut back, in some cases totally removed, opening up the yard as it needed to be. It no longer looked like a "jungle".They took all the cutting, including the tree and all the raked material away. Overall, I couldn't be more pleased. ..

Overall, we're extremely happy with the walls! They look gorgeous and should last longer than we do. We just moved to the house several months before having the walls done and we're looking forward to having them there at least the life of our mortgage :) The masons were extremely professional, working in the summer heat and doing so very efficiently. We were quite surprised how quickly everything came together. There was one point where I thought some of the walls had too much mortar visible and was disappointed by that- we picked Oliver because their walls consistently did not show a lot of mortar. Jeff quickly came over to explain to me that it was only a part of the process. The excess mortar would be cleared away; he was right- everything was set and looks amazing. Getting the walls all set was a fairly seamless process; from quote to getting the work scheduled to final payment. The very last part, adding in the railing on the steps per city code, seemed to drag on forever. We're not sure what happened, but it was difficult to get a hold of our project manager to let us know when the railing would come and when the inspection would be done. The project management on the process was a bit difficult. Overall, we're extremely happy with the walls and would recommend Oliver for masonry work. They are definitely worth the price.
Description of Work: We had two retaining walls in our back yard which needed replacing (wood, old, rotting... yuck). We wanted to replace with stone for a nicer look, a place pests couldn't hide and a longer lifetime. We looked at many walls from Oliver Enterprises and two other companies in our area and were consistently impressed with the appearance of the stone walls done by Oliver's masons. The quotes from three companies were all within 10% of the median. Oliver was the most expensive, but when spending that much money, we wanted to go with what would make us most happy. No regrets. They came in, took down the old walls (removed all materials), set up proper gravel & drainage and laid the new walls all in a little over a week. Our upper wall was ~4ft high and >50ft in length with two corners. Our lower wall was <3ft in height, but much longer and had a set of stairs which also needed to be replaced. They had to pour some concrete at the bottom of the steps, build the steps and eventually put in a wrought iron rail (per city code). The last part was done ~one month after the walls were done. The yard got pretty torn up from all the equipment, so they re-seeded it as the last step. That part wasn't great, but we knew going into this process that the yard would suffer damage.

Members, We are glad to see that you are happy with the outcome of your project and I would like to apologize for your concerns about the lack of communication about the railings and final inspection. As you know we subcontract all of our railing work to a very high quality company and at the height of the season the lead times did get set back and a bit out of our control and unfortunately the Building Inspector could not sign off on the project until the railings were installed. We were selected by Angie's List to receive their Super Service Award 2012 and will certainly take your feedback very seriously. Thank you and we are pleased that you would utilize our services again. Jimmy Faiola

We had a wonderful experience with them. They saw the potential in our unconventional front yard and came up with beautiful plan for its improvement. They did an excellent job of troubleshooting problems before providing a quote. Their prices were competitive and they charged us exactly as they said they would in the contract (to the penny). They showed up when they said they would. They stayed until the work was done. They were respectful of an old growth tree (a very large oak) and adjusted the path to keep its roots intact and allow it more space to grow. They were also pleasant to work with when we had different opinions about the curve of the front walk. They were respectful of our ideas and they were willing to make changes that both met our expectations and conformed to their own standards for masonry. I get compliments on their changes to my front yard every time I am outside doing work. I would gladly hire them again, and I intend to when we address our driveway and retaining walls in a couple of years.
Description of Work: We live in a sideways house that was in dire need of curb appeal and better drainage, and Oliver Enterprises had recently done a beautiful job of hardscaping and landscaping a house across the street. (They had put in a stone front porch, front walk and retaining wall, as well as a pop-up sprinkler system, sod and foundation plantings.) They replaced our old brick front porch with a beautiful New England field stone porch with a wrought iron railing and granite landing/treads. They replaced our crumbling flagstone front walk with meandering concrete, which they hand embedded with small stones. They also regraded the slope to our house and redirected the downspouts to a pop-up further out in the yard to improve the drainage.

Jeff and Jimmy were both very professional and very helpful. Jeff's experience and that of his employees was valuable in determining the best way to do the project. I was not sure how the end result would look as we had to change some existing bluestone steps and a stone wall to accommodate a new entryway. They made it look beautiful and like ti was always meant to be that way. Jeff was very timely with his quote, always open to questions and accommodating to changes made along the way. Jimmy was always available and checking in to make sure we were happy. The workers were polite and considerate and did an excellent job in a very timely fashion. I highly recommend Oliver Enterprises and would use them again.

First of all, i want to say we have had Oliver working for us for 6 years now.. They did our landscaping in 2006 after we had lost our house to a fire and completely restored our front and backyard.. Mason work was out of this world!! Landscaping is gorgeous and such a joy to look out onto everyday!! Jeff was very professional and extremely easy to work with. Always gets back to us when we need help! They continue to cut our grass and bushes every week and do our spring and fall cleanups! Never had any problems in 6 years!! We will continue to use Oliver and referring him to our friends and family!!

I built a house back in 2008. Part of the construction involved erecting a retaining wall alongside my driveway. Over the last couple of years the wall began to fail. As such, I began the search for a capable contractor. I had several vendors come out and view the work that I needed done. After receiving all of the quotes, I opted to contract with Oliver Enterprises. Although their price was not the lowest, I elected to move forward with them based on my overall impression and subsequent experience. They were professional, courteous, detailed, incredibly responsive and effectively communicated exactly how they would approach the work that was need to be performed. Throughout the construction process, they kept me apprised of the progress and estimated date of completion. In addition, they also managed to work closely with my neighbors ensuring them that upon job completion, their yard would remain as it was when the project started. Oliver Enterprises did a terrific job. I am incredibly satisfied with their work and my overall experience. I would not hesitate recommending them to anyone looking to improve the value of their home. Thanks again!

In the fall of 2011 we had several trees removed from a 1/2 lot section on our property. It left a very unsightly, unattractive void in the landscape. We had to look at it all winter and there was no snow cover to hide it from view. Come early spring we knew we had to do something but were not sure how to approach the task or what to expect for an outcome or what the options were for repairing and landscaping the area. We contacted Oliver Enterprises (on-line through their website) and requested a consultation. Jeff Oliver responded to our request and after assessing the area involved sat down with us to suggest a design, explain the tasks needed to be performed, set expectations and provide an estimate of the cost. Jeff was immediately able to help us understand what the potential was for redeveloping our landscape scar and what the process would involve. In the matter of a week, or so, he provided us with a proposal, we discussed the terms and came to an agreement. The project work started shortly afterwards, was completed in a reasonable elapsed timeframe despite some challenging weather conditions...rainy periods. The results are amazing!! We are very pleased with the new landscape and the way everyone from Oliver Enterprises conducted themselves during the project. They were pleasant, professional and skilled in their individual tasks.
Description of Work: To repair a landscape following the removal of trees we needed a full service landscape service with the expertise and capacity for excavating and removing ledge, grinding tree stumps, construction of a retaining wall, adding fresh loam, expanding an existing irrigation system, regrading resulting area to conform with the existing landscape followed by planting of mature trees and flowering bushes.

Oliver Enterprises were there when they said they would be, worked efficiently and proffesionaly. They did a beautiful job on the curved walkway! I am very sattisified with their work. I would recommend hiring them.
Description of Work: Installed new walkway, using pavers, from driveway to rear deck. Walkway was curved and matched work done previously by Oliver Enterprises in 2007 in front yard. They also regraded the back yard to accomondate new walkway height and around new deck area.

The 7-man crew was well organized, heavily equipped, and put up the wall in one day. I was home on the day they built the wall, and for once, I was pleasantly surprised by how well a contractor built something. Some follow-on landscaping (that I asked about after the wall was complete) was priced so high that I did it myself, but for masonry I would call them again. For this job, the company was hired by my general contractor. (Note-- one of the pictures was taken before the driveway was patched, and one after.)
Description of Work: Built a 45 foot x 2 foot retaining wall out of fieldstone, and patched the asphalt driveway next to the retaining wall. Also patched a couple spots in the house foundation.

Contractor low-balled the bid and tried to hold us up for more money to finish the work, was never on time, began the work late, finished late, and while he agreed to one price to do work he charged several times more once the work was done saying he had miscalculated the bids. Yet the quality of the work was pretty good except for toward the end when he tried to rush.
Description of Work: Company bid on large job which included excavating a small hill, rebuilding a long retaining wall, building a water feature, brick terrace and parking pad.

Response from Oliver Enterprises
We were contracted for this job by a landscape architect. The communication was not good. We bid on this job accurately . This was a very old home and had many problems. In 30 years in this business this was one of my most disappointing experiences. Every penny that we charged over and above the original price was discussed in meetings with the architect present and agreed upon. They gave us permission to perform the work and we did it. At the end of the project they began to argue over things that we agreed upon fully. Very dishonest........ We had to take them to court. ( My only experience in 28 yrs) and were awarded payment. I am very pleased with how this project came out. The architects compliments were very [Member Information Removed] across the board. I dont like to be negative when talking about experiences with customers because they all need to be learning tools to make us a better company. I consider how they handled this project very dishonest and in poor judgement. The time to discuss extra costs are before we perform the work , not after..... We would never charge someone for something that we did not agree upon fully in advance.
