JL Stone, Inc focuses on residential remodeling and building as well as project management for home owners interested in taking a more active role in their construction project. We strive to incorporate the highest quality materials into our projects and to screen all of our sub-contractors in order to provide the best possible finished product for our customers. Through cost cutting methods and working with the smaller, local sub-contractors we feel that we can offer reasonable prices for the variety of services we provide. We also feel that by working closely with our customers throughout the entire construction or remodeling process we can eliminate the mistakes that lead to time and cost overruns which have become so common in this industry.
JL Stone, Inc is fully licensed and insured and only hires licensed sub-contractors who carry up to date liability and workers compensation insurance. We always operate within the building codes outlined in the Massachusetts State Residential Building Codes Seventh Edition, and strive to maintain an organized and safe job site at all times. Along with being the owner of the company, Jeff Stone runs all of the projects himself and works with and along side the sub-contractors on most of the jobs. This hands-on approach leads to a smoother running project as well as maintaining harmony between the customers and all of the craftsmen and craftswomen that are involved in the process.
Jeff completed a master bedroom suite (with bath) + additional hall bath renovation from August-October 2023. We had a good idea what we wanted before signing the contract, but were pretty open to ideas that would save cost or improve aesthetics. Jeff stepped in and was an awesome partner during this build. He'd get to a feature we hadn't fully discussed (ex: shower niche size and placement, tile edging preferences), listen to our preferences and then make recommendations based on his prior work (with example pictures). This happened almost daily and was a huge help that kept the project moving. The quality of work was exceptional, his communication was great and he was flexible to minor changes within the scope of work, often recommending them himself.

I could NOT retain, after (((3 FAILED))) efforts he would abruptly cancel last minute either schedule conflict on his end, weather related, or heading out of town was his priority. My mom who is on 18 medications ask that I help her secure someone reliable, this was not true- I conversed with him on the phone, he can Not even Hold One commitment as we are trying to navigate post flood during a (((time sensitive))) recovery His timeline was not accurate and after 3 times we figured he could not be bothered to make a genuine effort to make good on his wrongdoings Unfortunately we were brushed off consecutively, he must be overly very preoccupied with non stop marathon projects around the clock, at least that's how he comes across Good, stay busy but you jeopardizing clients in between, always has its fair share of bad publicity above all adverse outcomes as you can see not much gained or accomplished. In conclusion.... Use at Your *****Own risk***** unless your desperate for Bait and switch NO show cancellations! Reminds me of Monkey business!!!

Jeff is a professional builder and we are very happy with his work. We added some footage on the the 2nd floor, including a new bathroom and master closet, and we renovated our first floor, installing hardwood flooring and opening up the living room and kitchen. The work also includes a brand new kitchen, where we moved things around and added an island. We are very satisfied with the overall quality of the renovation, especially the details. Jeff did a great work finishing up the trims, edges and connecting the existing walls with the new ones. There was part of the house we did not change, and Jeff made the connection seem very natural and seamless. When the project was going on, we were living in the house with a baby. Jeff was very conscious about noise and dust, and he had reduced the interference to the very minimal. He always kept the work areas clean and made sure the the dust would not leak into our living areas. We are grateful for his considerations and his attention to details. Jeff's planning is very good. After the first site visit, he was able to provide us a detailed quote, which separated allowances and other necessary costs. His gives us generous allowances for floorings and fixtures, so it is no problem keeping the budget from our side. Even if there are some unexpected additional works, we are still within the budgets. We would definitely recommend him to our friends and family.

We worked with Jeff see if he could do a large renovation project on a pre-1900 home, including demoing and renovating a kitchen, installing a new half bathroom, demoing and reinforcing two walls, laying new hardwood floor and removing a chimney. Jeff was easy to reach and responsive. His quote was more detailed than other contractors, showing costs for each portion of the project. His price was fair. Unfortunately, we could not move quickly enough and Jeff elected to not pursue our project due to his busy schedule. However, based on his communication and price point, we'd explore working with him in the future.

Jeff was extremely professional, timely, and efficient throughout the whole experience. His visit for the estimate was punctual and very concise. He answered all my questions both in person and via email. He arrived to the appointment as promised, and his work looked beautiful! Everything was cleaned up just right, and the price was very reasonable. I would call him again in a second.
Description of Work: Jeff installed a new countertop, cabinet, and dishwasher in our pantry. The dishwasher connections had already been prepared by a plumber.
I couldn't have asked for better results. Jeff really does incredible work. This was my second experience working with him and again, I am so pleased with the quality of the work. In addition to Jeff's great work, he offers very good suggestions to improve the renovation. For instance, after the stairway was taking shape, he suggested replacing a solid door with a French door, which would improve the appearance of the entrance to stairway as well as give the small condo a bit more light. He also gave me good suggestions about tiling, lighting and fixtures. I would not hesitate to recommend Jeff to anyone who is looking for quality craftsmanship for their renovations.
Description of Work: I requested a few projects, mainly to help me renovate a front staircase that leads to my 2nd floor condo, renovate two closets and some painting, as well as few 'handyman' projects. Below is what the final punch-list of work included: Remove existing carpet at front staircase and refinish or veneer treads, risers and skirtboards. Replace interior door casing at front entry staircase. Skimcoat and re-paint interior walls, trimwork, and doors at front entry staircase. Install light fixture and repair doorbell at front entryway. Install new handrail at front stairway. Construction of closet organizer at front entryway. Construction of closet organizer at living room closet Tile floor at foyer. Repair damaged ceiling in office. Install tile floor at foyer.

Jeff is a master builder and carpenter. His knowledge of all phases of construction is impressive. Because he does most of the work himself, the result is consistent and seamless. His attention to detail is extraordinary. As a perfectionist and master carpenter and builder, his finish work is of the finest quality. He adjusts easily to changes in the architectural plan and provides highly creative ideas as to design and construction. He keeps the construction site amazingly clean so that dust and debris is kept to a minimum. Jeff created a fully working temporary kitchen in our dining room by constructing temporary walls and moving our old stove, dishwasher, sink, refrigerator, and microwave into the space. It is clear that Jeff truly cares about the quality of his work. His prices are fair, and he tries to keep costs to a minimum. In fact, he urged us to use a particular heating air conditioning contractor who was a good deal less expensive than those we interviewed. He took full responsibility for the hvac system when he could have used a company we interviewed. Most importantly, Jeff fully completed our punch list and went well above and beyond the contract to help us with every detail of setting up our new home. He was always accessible and reliable. I can’t imagine working with any other contractor after this experience and so glad we had the good sense to hire Jeff. He is professional, friendly, and has a great sense of humor.
Description of Work: Jeff Stone performed a major renovation of our 1916 home.He gutted our kitchen and moved the powder room to a location in the back of the new kitchen. The construction involved removing two bearing walls, installing custom cabinets, plumbing, electrical work with an upgraded service, painting, tiling, and installing new appliances. He gutted our master bath and created a new one. In an upstairs guest room he created a second full bath and laundry room. Also, he added closets to our master bedroom and front hall and installed new windows in all the renovated rooms. In addition, he supervised and helped install a complete new heating and air conditioning system with all new ductwork. As the project continued, he took on other tasks that were not part of the original plan.

Everything went smoothly. Jeff Stone recommended that I replace the original picture molding with the crown molding. It was a great idea; the room has a more "finished" look to it. As with the previous job (much larger kitchen and powder room remodel), Jeff was very neat. He sealed off the work space and there was no impact on the other rooms in the house. He completed the job on time and within budget.
Description of Work: Repaired and painted walls, ceiling and trim in the dining room. Removed old molding and installed crown molding. Hung chandelier.

This was the third time that I had worked with J.L. Stone. Everything went very well. The stone wall is beautiful. The new patio inspired me to do some landscaping and the patio is heavily used by me and my children.
Description of Work: Jeff Stone designed and built a patio in my backyard. He brought in fill to build up the land so that the patio is level with my kitchen. Instead of being steps down (as it was previously), it's as if the patio flows right out from the kitchen; it feels like an outdoor room. Jeff built a curved stone wall to contain the fill. The patio floor is flagstone.

Found JL Stone on Angie's List and noted that he had very positive reviews. He was the first of three contractors to contact me; the first to make an appointment visit my home to look at the rooms and the first to submit an estimate of the work. His estimate was by far the most comprehensive and fair. I also appreciated that he was a local business owner. We agreed to start the work when I completed a work project. He began on time and worked consistently to get the projects done. He understood that I hadn't done a kitchen renovation before and made several recommendations for every purchase I needed to make. I was happy with all of the recommendations and feel he gave me sound advice. Owner did almost all work, subcontracting out very little. As a result, the work was consistently done very carefully and with great craftsmanship. New closet in office looks like its always been there- new door matches all other doors. Kitchen renovations were not disruptive - only had one day without water in kitchen. Owner always made sure I could access water, sink and counter. Services that stand out: (1) exceptional and careful work; (2) very clean work. Kitchen dust was vacuumed every day; (3) very helpful in recommending providers; next steps, (4) trustworthy.
Description of Work: Renovation involved two stages of work: (1) create a niche in wall to fit fridge into main area of kitchen. This meant going through office on other side and creating a new closet and (2) renovate existing kitchen that was very outdated. Kitchen required new cabinets, counter, lighting, painting, carpentry and plumbing. By end of project, I had an updated kitchen with place for refrigerator, and a new closet in office.

It went amazingly well! I was so relieved after the horror stories that I have heard from friends and neighbors. Jeff Stone (the owner), was great to deal with. I got three estimates and he was the first to give me a quote and the only one who did it within the timeframe, and format, that I requested. He understood that I wanted to get the bulk of the job done while my children were away at summer camp. He started promptly and he made sure that the kitchen was useable by the first day of school (as promised); he worked around us to finish the project. And, his quote was the most competitive and he stuck to it. I expected demolition to create a mess throughout the house. Jeff created a wall of thick plastic around the job site; it was so tight that I didn't get any dust anywhere else in the house, not even in the next room - I became a JLStone fan at that point! Jeff maintained a very neat job site throughout the process. He swept up every night, leaving the space safe and accessible to me, in the event that I wanted to look around. Jeff purchased a sink and two-burner camp stove and set up a temporary kitchen for me to use in my dining room. I thought I could have managed without the temporary kitchen (since my kids were at camp), but he was right and I really appreciated not having to live on take-out during the construction. This is just one example of Jeff's high level of customer service. Although I had a plan drawn by an architecht, I found Jeff's years of experience to be very helpful. There were a couple of occasions where I wanted to make a change (things look different when walls are taken down); Jeff was able to tell me what would work and make changes on the fly. Regardless of what I asked, he never made it seem like it was a problem. Jeff has a good eye and is able to sketch what things will look like. Based on his suggestion, I agreed to put a half wall between the kitchen and dining room (the plan called for a wide opening); he was absolutely right - the wall gives the dining room a more finished look and it fits perfectly with the style of my colonial home. Jeff is a skilled master carpenter. He takes pleasure in putting the finishing touches on his work; in addition to the half wall, he created two beautiful built-in shelves and cabinets in my kitchen and powder room; neither item was in the original plan but he accommodated my requests. Jeff handled most of the work himself and brought in sub-contractors, such as plumbers, electricians and plasterers as needed. He managed and supervised all of their work. He also helped me to select fixtures for the powder room and made custom adjustments to the cabinets that I selected. Jeff always went the extra mile. When I decided to re-finish all the hardwood floors on the first floor (so they wouldn't look shabby with new kitchen floor), Jeff moved all the furniture for me, hired a flooring company and managed the whole process. At the end, he encouraged me to put together a punch list of items that remained to be done. He also made it clear that if I noticed anything down the road, I should call and he would come back to fix it. It has been almost two years and my kitchen still looks great! After he finished my project, three of my neighbors hired Jeff to do additions and remodeling projects in their homes. I will definitely use JL Stone, Inc. again.
Description of Work: I hired JL Stone, Inc. to demolish my old kitchen, powder room and an adjacent room; they also removed the wall between the kitchen and dining room, replacing it with a half wall. In addition, they enclosed the back porch, turning it into a mudroom. The powder room was relocated. Plumbing and appliances were given new homes. A beautiful new kitchen and powder room emerged from the rubble - it has become a beautiful centerpiece in my home.
