Trefler's

China Repair, Antiques, Furniture Refinishing and Repair,

About us

Trefler's has been owned and operated by the Trefler family since 1921. It all began in Germany, when Abraham Trefler began a small business for himself building and restoring furniture. Abraham’s son, Eric, was one of the few survivors of the camps in Poland and Germany during WWII. Upon his liberation, he left Europe for New York, and finally settled in Boston, MA. After spending some time working as a furniture restorer for the antique dealers on Beacon Street, he opened his own business. Using the expertise he learned from his father back in Germany, he quickly became renowned for his uncanny ability to restore almost any kind of art object. Today, Trefler’s is still owned and operated by the Trefler family. We expertly mix century-old techniques with modern restoration technology to create some of the best repairs in the world. No project is too big or too small for us to work our magic. Come take a tour of the studio and see what we can do to preserve your family’s heritage.

The work was first-class. The chalice is fully usable and barely looks like it was broken. The ciborium was repaired and both look like new, brightly polished and ready for Easter. I thought the price was more than fair.
Description of Work: I had an antique silver chalice from my church that was coming apart at the stem and a small silver container called a ciborium that needed a repair to its lid and a dent taken out of its side.

Description of Work: Paul was knowledgeable and extremely professional. He did not try to sell me anything. Instead, he gave me good information, excellent advice and some names of other companies who might be able to help me. He even carried a heavy object out to my car without me asking him to do this.

THIS WAS AN UNUSUAL FIX IN THAT THE SHAPE AND EXACT CONFIGURATION OF THE SCULPTURE WAS NOT OBVIOUS FROM THE BROKEN PIECES. THEY DID AN EXCELLENT JOB MAKING IT LOOK GOOD AS NEW. THOUGH THE PRICE WAS HIGH, IT WAS WORTH IT FOR THE SENTIMENTAL VALUE OF THE PIECE. ( IT NO LONGER HAD THE MONETARY VALUE OF THE ORIGINAL BECAUSE OF THE BREAK).

I've used them several times and they work miracles! The cat knocked over my lamp and they told me to pick up every single piece, no matter how small. It took about a month or less, and when it came back, you couldn't even tell that it had been broken. It was a wonderful experience and I can't recommend them highly enough. I tell everyone that if you have something that you truly treasure, to take it to them.

They are very good and have excellent craftspeople. The repairs are seamless and great looking. We had some silver tableware that needed to be repaired and they lost a fork, but they found one of the same pattern and replaced it. They are very conscientious, but not without mistakes. They’re an excellent outfit and they are not inexpensive, as you would expect.
Description of Work: They’ve repaired Chinese Chippendale, Canton China chips, and silverware was repaired as well. Most recently, they straightened a brass lamp.

It was absolutely fantastic. They are very calm, informative, and take their time with you. The repairs can take quite a while because they're busy. However the repairs always look perfect, and the painting restoration was magnificent and brought out colors we didn't even know were there. They are expensive, but you entrust a great deal to them. I highly recommend them.

It was very informative and you could see the quality of their work. It was very professional, they were upfront with their pricing, and the work was amazing. You could also talk to the craftsmen themselves and ask them questions. They take pride in their work, had a personal interest in making sure the work was done well, and they had great references like the Museum of Art. I plan to bring a couple of items to them for repairs and I’m confident that they’ll do a nice job.
Description of Work: I went to a bi-monthly presentation that showcased an employee who does restorative painting. They also gave a tour that included pieces they were working on and before and after pictures as well.

Their expert came to our house to assess the pieces and estimate what it would take to restore them. He seemed very knowledgeable and friendly. He proposed restoring the stands so they would look their age (like an antique), but would be intact and handsome. We are very pleased with the results and the fee seemed reasonable given the amount of work required. The work took quite a long time (3 months+), but we weren't in any special hurry.
Description of Work: They restored and refinished two large (3' high) mahogany Victorian plant stands that were in poor condition (stained and abraded) with detail pieces falling off or missing.

All in all, this went pretty badly. I had very high hopes after seeing their amazing work online and after all the great reviews. I got nothing but difficulty from beginning to end, however. Also, it was not possible to switch to another vendor due to insurance reasons. Every single request that was made took forever to get an answer, from an estimate of pick up and delivery of goods to an estimate of the cost of the repairs themselves. When Trefler's finally had the precious antiques that survived the fire, it was supposed to take 10 weeks to completion. Well, they were given the goods back in May and we just received the furniture, clock, Sumpter telephone and shaving mirror back today, October 1st. Also, they were not ready to hand off the goods to the moving company, so I was charged extra time by the moving company. Additionally, one of the pieces of furniture they took to restore is an ebony buffet designed by Phillip Johnson with a white cork top. I told them I wanted to keep the original color. They sent it back with a FAR darker stain AND there are DEEP marks where the top has been sanded unevenly. I could not be more disappointed. Treflers has shown no interest in remedying the situation. I would recommend going anywhere else.

Response from Trefler's
Hello La[member name removed] I’m sorry to read that you had a bad experience working with Trefler’s. It appears as though there was an unexpected obstacle in removing the smell of smoke from the small hanging wall box. Although it had appeared to have received minor exposure to the fire, it required over 6 treatments of ozone, which significantly delayed the project. I apologize that we were not able to complete this project within your expected time frame. As for the ebony buffet, it is not that we have no interest in remedying the situation, it is that this is the first time we realized that you are not satisfied with the way the cork top was completed. I know that we did not sand the top, we only applied a clear coat of shellac, so I am surprised to read your comment about the uneven texture. Please feel free to call any of us at Trefler’s so that we may start a dialogue to remedy this situation for you. Regards, Leslie Burnard Director of Marketing & Sales

I had a very hard time contacting them to know when to expect the estimate for the candelabra. I'd speak to a person who would take a message and then I'd never get a return call. This happened several times. Finally I explained my problem to the receptionist and finally got to talk to the person who knew something. All in all it took several weeks to get an estimate. In the case of the crystal decanter, I had to call them to get an ETA (one month away). They never called to tell me it was done.
Description of Work: They mended the broken top of a crystal decanter. I expect the price for this was OK, but I had originally taken in some brass candelabra to be cleaned and the estimate was over $300 per candelabrum. I'd been to other places, and I know that's par for the course, but it seems ridiculous.

They came out initially for a free estimate. They picked up and dropped off the table at no additional charge to me since I live so close to their shop. They do amazing work. The table was very damaged and the legs needed repairing. I felt for the amount of work they did the pricing was very reasonable. It did take them longer than anticipated to finish the job but I was in no rush.

They are very good. They have been around forever. I have used them in the past. They are expensive but they do an excellent job. One gets what they pay for there. They also do all other kinds of repair but I haven’t used them for that. They are honest and they have a great reputation. If we have something that is a real treasure that needs to be repaired, then that would be the place to take it. Their price is fair and their professionalism is excellent.

WE WILL EVENTUALLY USE THEM WHEN WE MOVE FROM OUR 1 BR CONDO AND HAVE ROOM FOR A SECOND CHAIR THAT IS CURRENTLY IN STORAGE. (WE DECIDED WE WANT TO COORDINATE FABRICS.) THE CRAFTSMAN WHO PERFORMS THE WORK LOOKED AT B/W PHOTOS OF THE PIECES AND KNEW A LOT ABOUT THEM, INCLUDING THAT THERE ARE SPRINGS IN THE SEAT T-CUSHION. SAID THEY MIGHT NEED TIGHTENING, BUT NOT REPLACING. (OTHER UPHOLSTERERS SAID THEY'D REPLACE THE CUSHION WITH A FOAM TEMPLATE.) WORK IS DONE ON SITE AND THE ITEMS THERE THE DAY I WENT LOOKED REALLY NICE. THE UPHOLSTERERS HOURS VARY SLIGHTLY FORM THE REST OF THE BUSINESS, SO CALL AHEAD. THE PRICE IS ON THE HIGH END, BUT THE APPARENT QUALITY SEEMS TO WARRANTS IT.
Description of Work: UPHOLSTER 1940S 'CLUB' CHAIR AND CUSHION AND TIE STRINGS ($1250). UPHOLSTER OTTOMAN ($350). THIS WAS LABOR ONLY. THEY HAD A VERY GOOD SELECTION OF FABRIC BOOKS AND ALSO OFFERED TO USE FABRIC WE MIGHT WANT TO BUY FROM ELSEWHERE.
