To make a long story short, a Baker Elman plumber (I think his name was David) and a contractor by the name of Jeff came by my house in order to review a bathroom remodel project. There were a number of next steps to discuss afterward, but we had time since we weren't planning to kick off the project until several months down the line. While the plumber and the woman at Baker Elman, Susan, were great and responsive, Jeff was impossible to get a hold of. I had left him messages and sent him numerous emails over the course of several months, to which he never responded. I literally never write reviews, even when I've encountered poor service, but I felt compelled to write this one. Jeff truly needs to reassess his business practice if he's hoping to garner/sustain business. His lack of responsiveness and support was extremely unprofessional and disappointing.

Response from Baker Elman Plumbing
We are sorry that the customer had a bad experience with Jeff. He does not work for Baker-Elman Plumbing and is a subcontractor that we have worked with for many years. We reached out to Jeff to find out why he didn't respond. Jeff informed us that he has 27 e-mails going back and forth from the member. The last e-mail from the member to Jeff came in on the 27th of March saying that the member was no longer going to go ahead with the project at this time. In talking with Jeff about this issue he told us that he said to the member that he hoped that it was nothing that he said and he wished her good luck.

The only problem we had was the guys that came gave us a verbal estimate and it ended it up being more expensive than this (which was obviously frustrating). Otherwise, they did great work. Fixed a pipe but then there was loud banging happening every night in that pipe. They returned three times with no complaining, three days in a row and finally found/fixed the problem.
Description of Work: fixed a leaky pipe. Had to come back 3 times to fix a banging that was happening and they did this with no extra cost and finally found the cause of the problem.

The people in the office were friendly and responsive. They provided an exact quote, and detailed information about the water heater included in the quote. The team came out the same day(arrived 2 hours after I called, installation done in under 1.5 hours), the work was done in a timely and efficient manner. The installation was clean and professional looking. Price was slightly higher than other quotes, but heater unit was better than other quotes included, and they were available immediately.

Excellent ! My furnace (steam heating system) stopped working suddenly. I called Baker Elman and the whole experience was great. Firstly, the on-call person (I forgot his name but will update the review once I remember) advised me to try and avoid the on-call visit during the Thanksgiving holiday as it would cost me more. Then he tried to troubleshoot the problem with me over the phone at no cost and had me try a few things. Then he offered to have a Apple facetime video session. Please keep in mind I hadn't even paid them but they are an honest and caring company and didn't want me to be without heat. Since I don't have an Apple phone, we couldn't do a video session. He visited my house and the issue was fixed quickly. We were not sure which component was faulty but the problem was resolved and I had heat again. I have another issue now which reminded me to write this review. I am thinking of calling them again.

Our water heater sprung a leak late Thursday night. We found Baker Elman through AL and called on Friday morning to see if they would be available to replace it that day. We spoke to Sheryl who is one of the owners of the company. She was extremely helpful. Unfortunately they had no availability on Friday, but Sheryl took the time to call the manufacturer on our behalf and informed us that the unit (which was over 10 years old) was still under warranty. Since we were the second owners of the unit, she gave us instructions on how to register the tank and get a return authorization for a replacement. She then gave us the name and number of one of their competitors that might have availability to help us that day. We ended up using the contractor she recommended that same day. Not only did we get our hot water fixed before the weekend, but we also saved upwards of $750 by following her instructions on how to transfer the warranty. We were so very appreciative of the help we received and needless to say Baker Elman will be the first place we call for future plumbing work. I

I was absolutely convinced that it must be because of a showerhead that Baker Elman had changed out a few days before. I was upset so the owner David Elman came out. He used some impressive methods to rule out several things and then he returned the next day with a camera on a snake like thing. He stuck it into the wall and proved it could not be he shower head. I did not want to believe him. Then he conducted several experiments that proved that it was actually the shower tray under the shower that was no longer draining. I never, never would have guessed. I was so wrong. If you ever get the chance to personally work with David Elian - GRAB IT. He is amazing.

Steve came out to do an estimate, A few days later I received the estimate via email. I had a few questions, which I emailed and were promptly answered. (Great office staff, by the way.) After I had my bids from three other companies I gave the job to Baker Elman. They weren't the highest price, nor were they the lowest, but the price I paid was fair. The boiler was installed in one day and the guys, Drew and Steve(?) even got the old boiler out of the basement instead of having it sit in the basement waiting for the removal company (also arranged for by Baker Elman) to come pick it up. They arranged for the electrician to arrive the next day and when he was finished I had heat again. Everyone cleaned up after themselves. I like the attitude of everyone I've worked with at Baker Elman, and their subcontractors seem to have the same frame of mind. I would certainly use them again.

Poorly. The first employee came and said the issue was the diverter valve, which he replaced. It did not fix the problem. I called and a second employee came and cut the diverter valve. Problem still not solved. I started getting threats from their office that legal action would be taken if I did not pay their invoice, even though they had never fixed the problem. Finally, a manager arrived and figured out the issue was that the tub faucet opening was too small for the volume of water and this was forcing the water out of the shower head. He ordered a replacement valve, yet when they went to install it, it was not compatible with the rest of the plumbing fixture. Now they are charging me a restocking fee. The manager was the only professional I dealt with in the entire ordeal. The office contact was rude and completely unprofessional. I am disputing the invoice and reported them to the Better Business Bureau because I don't think I should be paying for the visits for work that was not necessary simply because their employees lack the skills to do a proper diagnosis.
Description of Work: I needed a shower/tub repaired (some water would still come out of the shower head when the water was diverted to only come out of the tub faucet).

Response from Baker Elman Plumbing
The member called our office to schedule a job to repair his Symmons tub and shower valve. He stated that when the tub was being filled water flowed out of the shower head. This is typically a problem with what is called a diverter spindle. At two different times I had a mechanic there to replace the diverter spindle but the problem persisted. On the third trip, I (David Elman) went over to check out the problem. I noticed that the lever to switch from tub to shower had been cut. I called the member at work to tell him what I had found and he all but accused my employee of cutting the part. I ordered a new lever to install. Again, I went over and put the new diverter lever in and the problem got even worse. I then called the manufacturer (Symmons) and spoke with the tech support division. I told them what the problem was and what we did to try and correct it. He asked what finish the trim was and they said that the problem was with the tub spout due to restricting the flow of water forcing some of the water to come out of the shower head. We sent pictures of the spout to Symmons and they informed us that it was not compatible with the Symmons shower valve in the wall. I gave the member the name of the person at tech support as well as the phone number so he could call to discuss the issue as well. We sent the member, as per Symmons tech support suggestion, a picture of the tub spout that would work and he didn't like the [Member Information Removed] it looked. He picked out one that was very similar to what he had. He was informed that it was a special order. When we went back to install the spout it could not be used because it wasn't compatible with the type of connection coming out of the wall. Again, I informed the member that he needed a certain type look of tub spout. I had my mechanic install just a piece of pipe to see if that corrected the problem with water coming out of the shower head. Which it did. Again, we recommended that the member needed to put in a full flow tub spout. I emailed the member and explained that we are still willing to work with the member to correct the problem. There has been a minimum of seven hours spent at the members home trying to repair this issue which he has not been billed for all the time spent. Not only by my mechanics but also my office personnel trying to locate the tub spout that he can live with. Unfortunately, the only spout that will work he doesn't like the look of. I asked the member how long the problem has been happening and he said since he moved in which was in 2013. Which means whoever cut the diverter lever did it on purpose to help the situation.

The plumbers took apart the shower/tub handle and announced it was a leak in the diverter. But they could not identify the hardware so they could not replace the diverter. They took the diverter with them back to the plumbing shop to ask others if they knew the type. Two days later we called back and they said they couldn't find anyone who knew it. But they could not return the diverter to us because they had thrown it away. Without the diverter to identify the hardware, all new hardware must be installed. They estimated the cost at $800 to $1,000. We refused.

The member called my office to schedule an appointment to check for a leak through the ceiling in their kitchen. Our mechanic found that the leak was coming from the diverter spindle on the tub and shower valve. There was a crack on the side of the spindle. There wasn't a name on the valve to know what make it was to get a new part. He removed the cracked part and brought back to the office, seeing if we could identify the make. We have several books in our office for this reason and we were unable to identify the spindle. Due to that fact we explained to the customer that the only way to repair the problem was to replace the shower valve. The member was given a price to install a new valve. We usually hold onto parts we remove from jobs until we know it is not needed. I have no explanation as to why it was thrown away.
