Baker Elman Plumbing

I feel extremely fortunate to have found Baker Elman Plumbing. When I find a company I can trust and does high quality work, I stick with them. And that's my experience with Baker Elman; it has been nothing but wonderful. Here's why. I am in the process of replacing an old, leaky toilet in my mom's home, but it has been a bit of a saga trying to find the right toilet to fit an awkwardly shaped space. When her toilet first started leaking, I called another plumbing company which I also found through Angie's List that I won't name. Their plumbers came in, took a picture of where/how the toilet was leaking, and told me that there was no way to fix it; it would have to be replaced. This took about 15 minutes. Strangely, the toilet started leaking more profusely after they left. They charged me $200 and sent me two options for doing work: one estimate for them providing a new toilet and installing it, and a different option for if I provided the new toilet for them to install. Both estimates were over $500. In addition, they recommended I get an elongated toilet. Although they didn't seem bad, I wasn't that positively impressed with my experience with the company--their price nor their sense of work ethic (they had to change their schedule arrive 3 times on the same day as they were running late-- so I continued to do my research and that's when I came across Baker Elman Plumbing. To shorten this story, when the Baker Elman plumber came today, he removed my mom's old toilet, but then when he was about to install the new one, he noticed that the toilet bowl I had had delivered was broken (When he went to unpack it, he heard parts clanking around that shouldn't be.) So, he then reinstalled my mom's old toilet AND FIXED THE LEAK, so that the toilet is better functioning, while I wait for the new toilet to arrive. This, of course, was in direct contrast to the first plumbers who not only told me the leak couldn't be fixed, but in fact, seem to make the leak worse. (In addition, it turns out for the space where I have to put the toilet, I shouldn't have an elongated toilet. It needs to be round, so that my mom can use it safely.) I value companies that hold themselves to a high level of professionalism, accountability, and integrity, and Baker Elman is just that. Even though their prices are very reasonable, the care, competence and integrity shown by their company from the owner--who reads emails from her customers-- to their technicians is something you really can't put a price on.

Excellent all around! We wanted to replace our old boiler and hot water heater with a high-efficiency system, and Steve devoted a lot of time to working through the various options with me. This took more time than normal, as it was a challenge to find a good place to put the new system (due the different venting requirements, and the fact that it is in a basement shared with others). Regarding logistics, Lisa was incredibly helpful in organizing everything. This was also more complicated than normal because I was not in Cambridge at the time. Finally, the price was reasonable (around $15k for a high-efficiency boiler and indirect water heater). This was not the cheapest quote I received, but worth the extra cost given Baker Elman's reputation for excellent work.

No hot water in the time of COVID. Returned request for bid in minutes. Susan in the office was professional and caring. The guys came on time and installed a quality Ruud water heater based on photo of old heater. The workmanship is first class. You get what you pay for. Highly recommended.

The install went great! Everyone I worked with was very professional and the project had no issues whatsoever. I would and will use Steve and his team again in the future

Great experience with Baker Elman - they sent David Dejardin to help us figure out where a major leak was in our walls and fix it. From start to finish they were organized in setting up appointment, figuring out what was happening and explaining it to us. Leak ended up behind lower kitchen cabinet in the wall (ouch!) and they did everything they could to try to avoid having to remove lower cabs. In the end, they couldn't - we had to take it out for them to get at the pipe as it was nestled in a crevice behind 4x4 post. They used video cam on phone to show us where the pipe was, so we'd see why moving cab was unavoidable. They then sent pics to cab carpenters they knew to help us figure out best approach to moving it with least amount of inconvenience/damage. After they left, we were actually able to move the cab ourselves due to that guidance, and it saved us time. David then came back and fixed the issue, helped us replace cab. Lastly, and this might be a small thing to some but a big thing to us...they were considerate of the fact that a kitty lives in the unit the work was being done in, made sure he didn't get out. We've had a number of plumbers over the years and all were fine, but not standout so didn't inspire any loyalty. This company / David will be our first call going forward due to our experience with them. Great experience.

Lost heat on a cold weekend, called Baker Elman based on the recommendation of a friend. They prioritized getting someone to my house to look at the system on short notice. When the closest supplier did not have the part I needed in stock, they prioritized getting someone to another supplier so the part could be replaced and we could get heat back that day. Baker Elman went above and beyond any expectations I could have. I'll happily hire them again and recommend them enthusiastically.

From start to finish, working with Baker Elman Plumbing was easy. I messaged them via Angie's list requesting for a quote for a valve replacement. They responded promptly, asked a few questions and photos which I sent them. They had quoted me about $300 for the job, which i initially felt was a bit too high for a simple valve replacement. In any case, I wanted to get the job done so I scheduled a service call. They sent a person (dont remember the name) and he was on time and instead of replacing the valve added a new valve (simpler fix) compared to replacing the existing valve. The job was much simpler and they had completed the job. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they only charged me $180. They could have very well charged me the $300 odd that they had initially quoted and I had agreed to. I rarely see businesses especially in the home maintenance space to business the right way and are not ripping off customers. The job that they did was very simple and hard to assess quality or skill level, but for me more importantly is the fact that they are honest and a trustworthy company, which they professionally displayed when handling the billing. I would stick with them for my future plumbing needs. Keep up the good work Baker Elman Plumbing.....

Was very pleased with my service call. When I explained the problem I got an immediate estimate but also a description of how I could fix it myself. They saved me $150 by walking me through what ended up being a simple fix. While I didn’t use them for this job they will be top of my list next time I need a plumber!

The technician came out promptly and replaced the pump competently. The problem came when we received the bill. My husband called the company to find out why we were being charged much more for materials than what we would have expected based on the retail price of the pump, as ascertained from my husband's extensive online research. He spoke to one of the owners, who first was very defensive and seemed to resent the fact that my husband had gone "shopping" for prices online. My husband was never any less than polite, but the person he spoke to, rather than trying to find a solution, became increasingly belligerent - his tone was almost insulting - and ultimately hung up on my husband. We will pay the bill, but we will not use this company again.

Well. At the time, they were unable to solve one problem that has since been working correctly.

They were pleasant to work with. They were able to schedule it within a day. Very clear on the cost.

Simply put, I could not have asked for a better experience or a more professional and helpful service provider than Baker Elman. Here is the more detailed version.... I live in a part of Needham, MA that has an incredibly high-water table. Needless to say, having a reliable and highly functioning sump pump is essential to keeping my finished basement dry and for maintaining my sanity! Unfortunately, my electric back-up pump recently stopped working so I called Baker Elman as I needed someone who can give me the peace of mind and confidence that this project will be done right and I knew they were the right firm for the job given previous interactions I’ve had with this wonderful firm and their super helpful and knowledgeable staff. I had a very tight timeline as I had nanny moving into our basement bedroom in under a week and the pump was in the closet within her bedroom so I was hoping to avoid disturbing her after moving in. With the help of Lisa, a very nice and super helpful member of the office staff, in just a matter of a few short days, they were able remove the malfunctioning battery back-up pump and replace that with a much more powerful and reliable Zolar pump! Having a generator made this an option for me, which David Elman, the owner of the firm as well as Frank one of the awesome technicians both suggested! Next order of business was minimizing the natural running noise of the pump as our nanny’s bed was less than 4 feet away from the pump closet. Lisa put me in touch with another one of Baker Elman technicians, Smith, who had exceptional carpentry skills. Within 24 hours of me calling and speaking with Lisa, I had Smith come out to my house, measure the pump closet area, and build a custom, wooden insulated cover that substantially reduced the noise of the pump and the running water!! Smith also added insulation to the closet walls to further reduce any sounds from the pump area!!! He was incredibly professional, friendly and helpful! These guys are not just pros at their trade, but they take customer service to a whole new level. I cannot thank David, Lisa, Smith and Frank and the rest of the incredible Baker Elman team enough. You guys have a customer for life.

Plumber(Conner) were Excellent....very responsive, professional & efficient! He was here the at the time they said he would be. He was very clean & organized and explained what needed to be done! He also recommended additional work which I agreed to. The work turned out better than expected. Would recommend him as well as use them again!

They were courteous, professional and knowledgeable about the issue - they also had a better price than other estimates I was quoted for the same work.

After sending them all specifications of a vanity and several photos of the bathroom where it was to go they set up an appointment, 1-4 to come by, give a price and do the work if the price was acceptable. The crew got to my house after 3:00. The plumber said he was not allowed to give prices. He called his boss, who also was not going to give me a price and said it was too late to start the work anyway and if they worked past 4:30 it was time and a half!!!!! I have no idea what the plumber was sent to my house to do, and it was clear he didn't know either. Very unprofessional!!!!! First time trying Angie's List, and LAST!!!!!!!!

Susan responded quickly to my request. She arranged for two plumbers to arrive at my 91 year old mother's home one hour after my call and the work was completed in about an hour. My mother was extremely pleased with the prompt ,professional and courteous service. The leaky kitchen drain was first noted the night before calling for service, The bathroom kitchen drain has been clogged for years. My mother watched with glee as the water flowed promptly down the bathroom sink for probably the first time in this century and water no longer dripped from her new replacement kitchen sink drain pipes.

It went very well. Kenny and Luke were prompt, professional, and everything is working smoothly. I am very appreciative of their excellent work.

Plumber arrived in agreed on timeframe and worked efficiently. He answered a number of questions I had about replacing the stove and the work needed to re-pipe. Very shortly after he left I had an emailed invoice in my mail and was able to pay over the phone. Also of note: Office staff was very responsive to initial and follow-up email asking about the cost of service and scheduling.
