It turned out very well. It worked out pretty good. It was a pretty good experience overall. The service was delivered exactly as what was priced out. There were no additional fees. There were no hidden costs that came out with the course of the work that they had done. The quality of the work was very good. I would absolutely use them in the future.

It was great. I liked them a lot so I'd give them a high rating. I've used about 6 to 8 times a year. I think they do a good job. They know what they are doing. They help maintain all the plants, trees and shrubberies. They're probably more on the expensive side.

It was excellent. It depends on the weather and what they saw was wrong the last time for whether they want to come back in 5 days or 10 days. It depends on what they see might be wrong or might be going well for determining the exact time the next one would come.

We first engaged Hartney Greymont to remove six massive twenty-year old Arborvitae on our property, in preparation for a fence installation project. Dan Cohen arrived first to assess the project, hear our needs and concerns, and get them out before the date set by the fencing contractor. The team arrived 6.19.15 on time -and did exactly as we'd asked, chipping the wood and leaving it in neat totes for me, as I'd hoped to use it elsewhere. As we were also interested in maintaining our two massive maples, which were overshadowing my garden, I asked the crew to do what they could, prior to the fencing project. While there, they began trimming some of the most accessible branches, and installed a brace to reinforce the limb of one of the maples, which was in danger of stressing the trunk. We agreed that they would come to finish the trees after the fencing project had been completed. A new crew came to finish the job on 3.18.16, which was to finish thinning and trimming the tree that they'd begun during their first visit, and do the same for the second venerable tree, both of which needed to have the canopies shortened and thinned out. Once again, the crew was prompt, but I was delighted by the general atmosphere of professionalism and humor that they brought to the project: Our house is 117 and has all of the quirks of an old home. Too many contractors show up and act as if they're doing you a favor- which alienates me immediately, but not these guys; They jumped in with positive energy and before we knew it, our trees were absolutely gorgeous, from root to crown. As they'd not yet filled in, we could easily see the elegant and accurate cuts that suddenly left our property awash in light, as never before. We-and out neighbors are astonished by the transformation, and none of us can get over the transformation of our trees, which are now ready to grace our property long after our house is gone. Although we're gladly telling the world of our experience, the trees themselves provide the best advertisement for Hartney-Graymont;

We have been completely pleased with their services. Everyone associated with them is responsive and professional in every way. They are always available to address issues as they arise. In one case, a new bush that they planted failed; they replaced it in a timely manner. Meanwhile, our lawn has been transformed as a result of their work. Their prices are on the high side, but in this case, you definitely get what you pay for. I would recommend them to anyone seeking topnotch lawn & yard care.

Below are the back and forth emails for two items I simultaneously hired Hartney for in the Fall 2014. Michael who met me to discuss a pruning job listed below also recommended that I meet with one of their landscape design people. I did that in Sept'14. We walked around for 1.5 - 2 hrs chatting away about needs and wants. They told me I had to pay for this design person's time so I did ($184). My understanding was that Karen would come back with design plans to review. Why would I pay someone to just walk around with me for 2 hrs. I was not planning to do the work myself and I was not taking notes. Karen was taking notes. Here are the emails back and forth and the responses after I asked for the plan in March?15 since it was winter I figured neither of us were in a rush until Spring arrived. I should have known something was up. Contractor Response - you paid for Karen to come out for a consultation, yes. As is the case with any other specialist (lawyer or doctor), her time is not free and we bill for it. That was clearly defined in my proposal for that meeting Hi Michael, I paid for a design plan of which I could then pick which items I wanted to pursue. I even forwarded you the email I send my wife describing that after we booked our apt with Karen. You did not write back that I was incorrect or anything. I did not pay for a person from your company to come and talk to me and walk around and produce absolutely nothing. That would be like asking a patio contractor to come over and discuss the patio I want and him billing me for the visit and asking for money to provide the estimate and proposal detailing what he would do, the costs for each item as well as options on pricing for different stones, etc. What you are trying to do is unethical. It is very different from a doctor visit. A doctor is not trying to sell new things that he can do to you when you come to him with one item of concern. Wording from the attachment you sent me ?She will conduct a site survey of existing conditions of the property. This site survey, along with field notes and with information from the initial meeting with Karen, will be used to create a working plan for the landscape improvements? Refund me the $184 at this point because it is clear we can?t work together. I have literally used 100?s of contractors and vendors for many properties I own and I have never come across this ever. Final response from the contractor: Hi Dan- it seems pretty clear based on the attached proposal that the initial consultation was to make introductions, discuss scope and begin to develop a strategy to address your landscape needs. This meeting is precisely what you paid for. The fact that you and I cannot get on the same page communication wise is my reasoning in choosing to no longer pursue our relationship. The proposal that you agreed to clearly defines the process leading up to developing a conceptual plan that is to include the cost of that plan and the collection of a 1/3 deposit of the total cost. We are not at that point and will not get there because we will no longer be working together. Take care. Item #2: Below in quotes is the scope of the job with a price of $1,625. Having never hired professional Arborists for pruning work out like this, the quote seemed reasonable if they did everything that needed to be done and for a crew for the day. But that was not the case. ?Open & contain all shrubs on property to reduce outer density to encourage interior growth development to help maintain the sizes of plants and keep in scale with planting areas. Aggressively push back Burning Bushes along back left side of back yard to reclaim lawn space. Remove browned out areas from and naturally prune adjacent Juniper cluster. A-shape Western Red Cedar in front of home in alcove. Reduce height by 8 feet +/- and contain lateral limbs to help encourage limb thickening to maintain a more compact form? My first Email to Contractor in response to the bill when Mike indicated that he hoped I washappy having his crew for the day to work on my project: I got billed at a high rate for three people for the day and they were not here for very long and I did not know that I had them for a day or would have been out there and guiding what I wanted done - like I have done with all other tree type people I have used. It seems no one can come up with the hours because someone is covering their butt on where they were and for how long. Not sure how to resolve this. The Bill for $1,650 at $92/hr equates to 18 man-hours. That is telling me that all three guys were here for 6 hours. That is not even remotely close to how long they were here. One guy came earlier then the scheduled 8:30 appt time and woke up my young kids off for summer break and myself. The other two showed up sometime after 8:30 - maybe 9 am. Then the two more senior guys left for at least 2 hrs - to go to another job. Everyone was gone when I was getting ready to leave probably at 11:30 or noon. I don?t even remember the #2 guy coming back after he left. Being generous on my estimates there was about 9 hrs of work which comes to $828. My recollection is as follows: 1st guy 3 hrs 7:30-9:00am then about 1.5 hrs after returning 11-12:30 - being very generous = Totals 3 hrs; 2nd guy 2 hrs - half hour from 9- 9:30 and then assuming he did actually come back another hr and half = Totals 2 hrs; 3rd (junior guy) 4hrs - was here the entire time - being generous ( meaning assuming earliest arrival and latest possible departure time) 8:30 - 12:30 = Totals 4 hrsThat totals 9 total man hours @ $92/ hr = $828 Good morning Dan- I think that our confusion with this situation begins with our understanding of how the original work was discussed and priced? I had outlined very specific tasks to be accomplished for a predetermined cost. This is what we agreed to as a contract price for the work. At no time did we discuss hours or time related to the completion of this work. If the work that we agreed upon to complete took the crew 3 days to complete, the price would not have changed for you as we had committed to the scope of work for a specific price. The only time we engaged in a discussion about time was after the work was completed and you had requested a crew to come out and tend to some miscellaneous items under your direction. I mentioned the cost for a crew for a period of time and that is the very moment that we got into this discussion about the previous agreed upon/completed work. I agree with you 100% that this job became confusing with the crew departing for a period of time to oversee some work taking place elsewhere. The fact that the crew left does not have anything to do with the fact that we needed to complete the tasks as outlined within our agreed upon proposal to prune your shrubs and the large Western Red Cedar. As far as billing rates, we have a standard billing rate for all staff. Instead of charging individual rates which would approach somewhere in the neighborhood of $150/hr for a very experience foreman and somewhere in the $60/hr for a junior staff member. In any event, I think that you should pay what it is that you feel comfortable with? Again, we agreed upon a very specific scope of work for a predetermined amount. The invoice that you received reflects these very specific details. It seems that the bottom line here is that if we completed the work that was outlined to your satisfaction, the invoice is valid. If we did not, than I would like to know what was not done to your satisfaction and would like the opportunity to fulfill my end of this situation. Please share your thoughts and let me know what makes sense? Talk to you soon My Response: I would have had all areas especially the back yard cut back much more then we did. Everytime Iasked for something I was not sure if it was extra or if they had time. I thought your guys were pruning every plant, tree and bush in the front yard. When I asked about the entrance to driveway - your response was we can see what we can do. Instead of - you have the guys for the day so whatever you want. That is very misleading. I was under the understanding that I hired guys who were arborists and knew exactly what to cut to give it all a good haircut (as we discussed). From my past experience, this type of work is usually much more - hey - "stay with me and tell me if you want me to go even more with the cut or stop". Anytime I commented on something I told the main guy - you tell me what you think - you are the expert but I did change a few things. I only did that here and there. I would have been out there the entire time with all the guys if I knew better and scheduled my entire day for that. The only guy who did anything special was the main guy. I could have gotten much cheaper workers if my intention was to cut stuff as I directed. I still find it very strange that you went back to understand hours the guys spent and can?t seem to come back with anything. It just leads me to believe my time estimates are pretty close. So the bill is basically $180 / hr for each of the 3 guys for a total of 9 man hrs. Not a bad gig. I was just out there yesterday for 4 hrs cutting stuff myself so there is still plenty of stuff out there. Resolution: The Company did end up billing my number. However, I do not recommend them to anyone. They are very expensive and what they represent is not get what you get. Everything is a play on words to get you to sign a contract that has misleading words that they use and have their own interpretation for. You have been warned. No one needs this type of contractor. I wish I was warned. Good luck.

We had Hartney Greymont to the house over 10 years ago, shortly after we bought our home. They were very professional and did a great job for us, and they also took a lot of time to explain how to prune properly, etc. We were very happy with the experience. A few years later we called them to move a bush when we were extending the footprint during a renovation. Our sales contact suggested the job would require special equipment which itself would cost $1000 or so, as I remember, and he then suggested that since that was the case we should have a few more jobs done at the same time. He ended up with a quote at about $2000. During a renovation, you don't want to pay $2000 to essentially move a bush. A local landscaper did the job perfectly well for under $400 - no expensive equipment involved. I didn't contact Hartney Greymont again for many years, till about a year ago when it was clear we needed more tree work done. A new (to us) salesperson was set to come out one morning at 11:00. Around 11:10, when he hadn't shown, I realized he had left a message on my cell phone at about 10:40, informing me that he was on his way to a doctor's appointment and should make it to my place around noon. It was a casual message, no apology, nothing to suggest that the appointment was urgent and last minute - just, I've got an 11:00 appointment so I might be an hour or so late, hope that's okay. ?? And you're letting me know this twenty minutes before you're due at my house? I had to be at work by noon, so I cancelled the appointment. Never heard from HG again, and they won't be hearing from me again.

Dan the arborist was very meticulous and professional in his assessment and estimate of the work that needed to be done, and he put us at ease with his demeanor. It took a little over a month to schedule the work from the time the contract was signed, but I was told this was due to mechanical issues with a truck. Originally the tree technicians were scheduled to come first thing in the morning on a Monday holiday (for us), but they didn't show until the early afternoon after completing another job. When the technicians came, they were very thorough and generally careful about maneuvering around other trees and our yard with their cherry picker in order to remove the deadwood. We were impressed by how well they cleaned up the sawdust and other debris after removing the wood. The cost was very reasonable. All in all, we had a positive experience, and we will definitely call Hartney Greymont again for future tree removal services.
