Service was excellent
Description of Work: Mark Vaccaro from GF Sprague came to my house to inspect areas of my roof that I was concerned with. Mark was on time and very professional. He took the time to help me understand what he would be doing and answered my questions. After inspection Mark determined that the roof was ok and no work was needed. I wasn't charged for the inspection or the time Mark spent with me. I appreciated the honesty Mark had shared with me and would highly recommend this company to anyone in need of help. In addition to Mark the team at GF Sprague that answered the phone and booked the appt was professional and thorough.

Description of Work: I explained on the telephone what services I needed. They sent a guy over, who told me they don't do what I needed. I was really annoyed--I took time off from work to meet with the guy. At the very least, they should have asked me to take pictures to send to them because that would have also shown that it is a problem they don't deal with.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. Our management team has attempted to contact you without success so that we can better understand where your expectations fell short. We sorry for any inconvenience we caused you. Our team does our best to diagnose issues over the phone to see if we can be helpful to your situation. If we think we can help, we will always schedule an appointment with the homeowner. We find more homeowners are unhappy because no contractors will at least visit their house and give an opinion or direction. Our certified experts are able to help 90% of the people we schedule an appointment with between us doing the work or referring their issues off to a trusted partner. We are certainly not in the business of wasting your time or ours. Best of luck with your project and if we can be of any further assistance, please don't hesitate to call us back.

I urge anyone who reads this to go another direction.
Description of Work: None, because like many of the other members I got the sense I was being sold a bill of goods (got the estimate summer, 2007 but am a new member which explains the delay in posting). I almost wanted to take a shower after I met the slimy salesperson. No exaggerations here, that's how bad it was. I was explicit regarding what I wanted, which was very specific and a reasonably small project. The guys at Sprague came back with an estimate that made my eyes pop. I had the work done with someone else and it cost me in the neighborhood of $3,500 for a job well done. Sprague's estimate was north of $20,000.

Hal called two hours before our meeting and ALSO tried to give me the $480 deal, to which I protested. He then relented and said something along the lines that the company was worried that we just wanted a consultation and had not intention of replacing the roof. He was ALSO a super-nice guy, all cheerful and nice to the kids, etc. The first twenty minutes of his presentation were fine, but he kept going on and ON and ON AND ON AND ON about how his is the only company that does things to code, etc, etc. He also made a completely unnecessary ethnic slur. He was trying to tell us that the workers hired by GF Sprague do not cut corners, but he added that they all "no offense" had accents. My husband and I were completely taken aback. There was NO NEED to mention the accents, he just could have said his workers do not cut corners, regardless of their nation of origin. I was literally giving him the evil eye and leaning back against my husband and he was completely unable to read his audience. He shoved this disgusting binder at us and acted as if it was full of wonderful references. Finally, I said, "HAL! STOP!! Just give us the quote!!" $50,000. I told him we just needed to do some research and he said, "well, that's what I'm here for." What? Come on. As if he is an objective source. I got angrier and angrier the longer he was gone at how he tried to manipulate us. He also spent a long time going on about the advertising and the trucks and was SHOCKED I hadn't heard of them. Just made ME wonder how much of that price goes to advertising. He had all these stale anecdotes he would try to squeeze in about wealthy people who trusted GF Sprague and didn't need any other quotes because they have been around 40 years or whatever. He did butter-up things like saying it was our choice, but the more expensive style "really goes with the arts and crafts feel of the house." He did not want to leave me the 10 page estimate, which really said almost nothing. I said, "Hal. I promise you I will NEVER hire you if you don't leave this with me. How am I supposed to compare you to others if you don't give me the estimate??? This makes no sense!! He had earlier said, "Well, I'm sure you've gotten one page estimates from others that say almost nothing." Hmmm, better than a 10 page estimate I am not allowed to look at!! He ended up leaving it after I threatened him. I meant it, too. We had a friend who is a contractor look at our roof and the quotes. He said there is no reason GF Sprague needed to put in copper--Hal's justification was that the tiles would last 50 years, so the underneath should as well. They just overspecked the house, our friend said. Bottom line is that GF Sprague people are salesmen first and roofers second. I would bet $10,000 that they have all been through training. It reminded me exactly of the vacuum salesmen that come to my house. I felt offended and manipulated and I will never do business with GFS.
Description of Work: I received an estimate for a roof replacement. A completely bizarre experience from start to finish. Despite their courtesy, they really all came off as a bunch of slimy and manipulative salesmen. We moved into a 1900 Victorian 6 months ago and were told the roof was in unknown condition but probably needed to be replaced. I received a flyer from GF Sprague (had never heard of them) for a free estimate, so I called. We set up an appt two weeks out, then they called and pushed it back another week. I expected someone would come, look at the roof and give us an estimate. Dan bounded in, all friendly and puppy-like. He wanted to look in the attic, and told us very somberly there was definitely leaking (three other contractors later told us that water could be 20 years old or more). I told him honestly we did not know if we were going to replace, we just wanted to know what was going on, first. He then walked off with our flashlight. When I emailed him to please drop it off before he left town, he never responded. Too bad for us when the electricity went out and we had 4 kids under six screaming upstairs and were searching for the matches. Dan couldn't check out the roof because it was too snowy, but we set up another appointment. They called again and delayed for a week. I asked if I needed to be there and was told I did not since Dan would just take a look at the roof. Dan called the day before and I told him I would not be there, but he asked when I would be home and I said 1pm, though I had a client coming at 2pm. He was there when I arrived, and we set up a time to talk the following Monday. He did his job and rang the doorbell. I had a million things going on, and a client about to arrive and I told him I could not talk then. He seemed to kind of gleefully tell me I needed a new roof and tried to show my pics, but I said, "Dan, really, I can't deal with this right now, I will talk to you Monday." I was definitely rude, but I couldn't get why he kept persisting. The following Monday, I rescheduled an evening client for the afternoon and my husband made sure he was home early from work to meet with Dan. Dan called and said the estimate would cost $480. HUH?? I was told it would be deducted from the cost of the roof replacement if I chose to go with GF Sprague. I was irate and canceled the meeting. I called a few other roofers, all of whom came within 2 days and emailed me a written estimate the following day. (One estimate was $18,500 and the other was $25,000.) Before I wrote them a scathing review on Angies' list, I decided to call them again and ask why the free estimate was changed at the last minute. They apologized and made an appt for us to meet with Hal. Again, we cleared the schedule to make time.

I found the company through Angie's List and contacted them for an estimate to perform some repairs to my gutters. Their representative came to house. After spending a half hour or so inspecting the house, he spoke to me about his initial impressions. I never heard back from them. I have been waiting for an estimate for approximately one month.

Very bad; person who came to do estimate did not clearly tell us that they intended to just cover old tiles with 2nd layer, rather than stripping old tiles; wanted more money to complete the job than listed in original estimate; put rubber on stripped rear deck, which now leaks in water. Chimney leaked after repair was done; it took a lot of pressure to get them to come to observe, and then they claimed this was caused by damage to siding, and they were not responsible; very hard to get them to return.

Well. The Sprague estimate was number 7; 5 others couldn't convince me that they knew why my roof was leaking. 1 other was a great, low quote, but seemed a real band-aid solution so I went with Sprague, since the proposed solution was holistic, more expensive but longer lasting. The salesman showed me pictures of my roof, and he gave me options at all different costs. Work was done promptly; communication about problems, extra costs, etc. was always clear, down to earth, straightforward. There were no surprises.
Description of Work: Replaced flat roof that covers most of the second floor on a 1700 sq foot home. Also tuck-pointed the chimney, repaired chimney cap. Installed proper ridge and soffit venting in second floor. Replaced some small sections of gutter. Cleaned all gutters.

On the positive side, Sprague was very thorough in their assessment of my roof and they taught me a tremendous amount about roof installation and proper ventilation. I would highly recommend having Sprague give you a quote just to get better educated on your roof. The negative was that Sprague's quote was $20,000 more than my highest quote at the time. The individual giving the quote had difficulty justifying the cost differential. In the end I had my roof replaced at more than half the cost of Sprague's quote from a company that was highly rated on Angie's List (A's across the board).

G F Sprague & Co is a big company, and I think this is why they charge so much. They were professional and came when they said they would. They were good about pricing it out as to how they arrived at their final cost. They also had good follow-up.

Extremely overpriced; next highest bid was HALF what they quoted, and several were 1/3 the price. Had they been more reasonably priced I would have seriously considered them. Hal Davis who came to do the estimate was the most thorough in checking out the roof and attic (in fact the only one to look at the attic). Their proposal was without a doubt, the most complete that I received and specified everything in detail (most of the other proposals did not specify by brand each of the items to be used). They also provided a diagram of my roof and many pictures of the problem areas. Their visit and proposal were very helpful to me in understanding the issues and in evaluating the other proposals, so it may be worthwhile to ask them to bid. I have no doubt they would do good work but they it appears that they wanted to to do extra, unnecessary work such as putting in more ventilation and a more complicated vent system than needed. Also proposed chimney work that probably isn't needed.

Hal Davis, the salesperson, returned our call and came to our house to make a thorough estimate. He climbed out on the roof to inspect the gutters and some existing roofing, took lots of photos and created a full set of options for the work. He explained each option and talked through all the pros and cons. He handed off the work to Bob Scribner, the production manager, who had a crew come out on the day planned. They completed the work carefully, checking with us when they had a question. The chimney work was completed by a sub-contractor who was outstanding. When they discovered a problem we hadn't anticipated, Bob and the mason talked it through with us in detail. The mason and his crew did a first-rate job. At the very end, yet another pre-existing problem was uncovered when some water leaked into the house. The Sprague crew came out on the weekend on short notice to patch it up. It is now perfect.
Description of Work: Eliminated frequent rain water over-shooting from a large roof onto a patio by installing a gutter on third floor roof, adding a scupper to second floor gutter, and installing a small diverter to slow the water flow. Installed a gutter on rear of garage to reduce some minor flooding there. Replaced entire top of chimney, including top 10-15 courses of brickwork, cap and critter trap. Brick work was completed by a very good sub-contractor, who was able to create some decorative detail to match another chimney.

Sprague was recommended to us by a stone mason as the best company in the business, to help us sort out the horrendous problems with our roof left behind by another contractor. We were not disappointed. A Sprague representative came to our house literally the next day, took us up on the roof, and provided a clear and competent assessment of the problems and our alternatives. Work started within days. As more defects were uncovered, they, too, were remedied without delay. Everyone we dealt with at Sprague was highly responsive, professional and courteous. The workmanship was outstanding and immediately addressed our multiple leaks. The team graciously accommodated our request that they photograph every step of the job and provide a written account of the deficiencies and remedies which was critical to us. They left the roof and yard spotless. We can't vouch for Sprague's prices as we didn't have the luxury of comparison shopping with winter coming but we do know that we will be dry.
Description of Work: We hired Sprague to trouble-shoot and repair major defects in the brand new roof that another company had just installed for us and was unable/unwilling to fix. Sprague replaced the lead flashing around our stone chimney, changed a low-pitch area from shingles to a more appropriate rubber membrane and removed an underlying "damn," replaced our ridge-line shingles that had been improperly installed, addressed numerous nail pops, re-flashed a leaking barrel window and two sky lights, secured screws that were popping through a section of flat rubber roof, replaced a defective gutter with a sturdy, custom-made one, shingled a bay window that had been overlooked, etc.

MY WIFE, WHOSE HOUSE IT WAS, WAS PRESSURED INTO SIGNING A CONTRACT TO REPLACE THE ROOF OF HER RENTAL PROPERTY. LATER, WE FOUND THE PRICE WAS MORE THAN DOUBLE THAT OF OTHER COMPANIES. IT WAS LUCKY THAT WE MANAGED TO GET OUT OF THE CONTRACT WITHIN THE THREE DAYS GRACE PERIOD, BUT NEVER MANAGE TO GET BACK THE DEPOSIT CHECK, ALTHOUGH THE OWNER PAID US A VISIT TO TRY TO SALVAGE THE CONTRACT. WE HAD TO PAY OUR BANK $20 TO STOP THE DEPOSIT CHECK. THE WORK WAS DONE BEAUTIFULLY BY ANOTHER ROOFING COMPANY FOR ONLY SLIGHTLY MORE THAN HALF THE PRICE GF SPRAGUE ASKED FOR. I AM POSTING THIS TO WARN POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS.
