Did you know that it's unwise to spend too much but it's worse to spend too little? How do you choose the right contractor? First, they should listen to what you want to have done, then they should take a look at what needs to be done. Our certified expert will provide a full inspection of the problem areas. We will take digital photos of these areas, and provide a complete color coded plan so that you can see what we saw. IN EXCHANGE FOR OUR TIME AND EFFORTS, ALL THAT WE ASK IN RETURN IS THAT ANYONE WHO WOULD HAVE INPUT BE PRESENT TO DISCUSS YOUR OPTIONS. We believe that this approach provides everyone with the best way to make a good informed decision. If you agree, please call us now. You'll be glad you did! Since 1969, GF Sprague has worked with discerning homeowners who buy the right job at the right price.
The Sales rep was great, the meeting with the foreman was great. The roofers themselves were very courteous and cleaned up great. Sales and the manager followed up after where I did a video testimony. No problems with the roof. If I have issues over the winter I will update.
Description of Work: First one of the sales reps came out and met with My husband and myself. I appreciated the fact they wanted my husband there 2 it can be a little intmidating meeting with sales guys. There guy was great, he was only one to get on my roof and see the actual damage to my roof and spotted a major problem with the venting. The other 2 companies gave 1 option and that was to replace the entire roof, they were nice and all but I wont sign a contract with a roofer until he has been on our roof. GF Sprague told us we did not have to replace yet that with Venting and fixing the flashings and chimney we could wait on the replacement. We did decide to go with full replacement but we had options and both my husband and I decided together. I do not know how a project this size should ever be sat down and gone over without everyone needed. I could have never communucated the info to my husband, atleast not properly.

This was a horrible experience that I wouldn't wish on anyone. First, when I called them, I was very specific that I needed an ice dam removed, and that was the reason I was calling them. They said they would come out the next morning, and for $685 would work up to 2 hours to clear my roof. I then repeated my statement that I was looking for them to remove an ice dam, and they said they could take care of it. The next morning they arrived, and spent about 50 minutes sweeping snow from my roof. They then said they were done, but I asked them if they had removed the ice dam as I asked. The person doing some of the work told me that was very difficult to do, but after I pushed him he tried some salt substance. That night got very cold, everything (including the water under the dam) froze, but the next day as it got warmer the drip began again. I called them, and they told me they could come out for another 2 hours but I'd have to pay the same $685 fee again. I turned them down, and about 1/2 hour later I got a call from my roofer, who came out about an hour later, and in 20 minutes had cleared the dam. I had several follow up conversations with G F Sprague. They basically kept insisting that they did what they said they would do (THEY DID NOT), and when they asked me what I wanted, and I told them I didn't want to pay for something that they didn't do, they flat out refused. Frankly, at that point, if they had done something like offer to only have me pay half, I probably would have accepted that, but it was clear this vendor had no sense of customer service. I have postponed writing this for a couple of reasons: (1) I contested the charge with my credit card company, and didn't want to do anything while that was being considered, and (2) I thought in response to my contesting the charge that maybe this vendor would do the right thing. At this point, thanks to some very poor handling of the case by the credit card company, I'm going to have to pay the bill. By the way - my roofer provided the credit card company with a very strong "second opinion" letter. Usually these types of contractors don't like to do that, but this case was so blatant that he did it. If you are ever in a position to have an ice dam removed, emergency or not, I recommend staying away from this vendor. In my case, in my opinion, they showed that what they do, and the quality of work, don't matter. What matters to them is only the time they spent. In my opinion, you won't get your problem fixed, and you will pay a lot of money for that privilege. I am a social media expert. I make my living teaching companies how to use social media to make a difference. From this point on, I'm going to apply my skills to making sure this vendor doesn't do to others what they did to me.
Description of Work: I reached this vendor after calling my roofer (who was out of town) and a few other vendors to remove an ice dam on my roof that was causing a small dripping leak into my attic and down my wall. They came out the next morning on time, and spent about 1.5 hours (the price included up to 2 hours of work) brushing snow off my roof.

Thank you for your post and feedback. This historically brutal past winter our company received thousands of calls and performed over a thousand emergency ice dam removals, including yours. The employees at our company worked straight through seven days a week during this trying time risking life and limb to help as many people in need, such as yourself, that we possibly could. Our companies operation turned synonymous to that of a triage unit and our goal was to alleviate as much damage at as many homes as time and safety precautions would allow for. Due to scope and circumstances our employees had to make judgment calls relying on their extensive past experience and training as to which areas to address based on factors such as severity, customer priority, accessibility, risk to other areas and foremost safety. Unlike a “normal project” i.e. installing a new roof the continuous extremity of the conditions forced us to make a decision on how to best help our customers and community. We decided that we could help alleviate the majority of issues on most peoples homes by performing our work based on a set Time and Materials basis versus a standard estimate. By cutting out the estimating process we were able to help more people and save more homes. With this in mind I would expect that you could understand that your job was in fact completed and that if you needed us to come out again that it would be no different in terms of compensation the second time. We had many customers who needed us and happily paid us to come back out multiple times due to a larger scope of work or simply the fact that we had multiple snow storms. Ice dams are caused by underlying issues and the removal of the ice dams and snow is simply a band aid to the situation until weather allows for the performance of a full and proper solution. We have worked for over 40 years to develop a name a reputation that we are proud of and customers are happy to recommend. Our goal is to create happy customers but that does not mean giving away work. I am sorry to hear that your experience with us was not what you expected. I wish you the best in future endeavors and if you are ever in need again we will be sure to respond with the same urgency and care that we always do.
This job went very well. The chimney work was done about a week-or-so before the re-roofing job. And this work took one day to complete. The inspection beforehand failed to show any evidence of wood rot or soft spots, needing extra work to be done -- there were no surprises once the old roofing was removed -- and no unforeseen additional work that had to be done. The area in which we live consists of similarly designed and built homes. Some homes have had more water problems from ice dams mainly caused by insufficient snow and ice shield protection. Some neighbors have had to use snow rakes during and after heavy snows. When the crew replaced flashing for through-the-roof vents and air intakes they discovered that a HVAC contractor had used the wrong sized flanges about 10 years ago. And it explained why there were slight leaks at these locations that needed to be caulked a month or so after the installation.
Description of Work: Chimney work. A week before the roofing our 55-or-so year-old moss-covered chimney had its mortar removed and re-pointed. The top of the chimney was repaired. An unused fireplace flue was capped off, and the flashing and exhaust vent for our relatively new water heater was properly re-installed -- our plumber had some problems installing this vent. Delivery and setting up. Stripping existing roof. The shipments of the shingles and other materials and the dumpster arrived when promised. Boards were supplied for being placed under the dumpster, so that its rollers would not leave depressions on our driveway. Tarps were placed on the ground (front and back of our house) to easily collect stripped off shingles, nails and other materials. Then a heavy-duty mesh was run from the roof edge to the tarp on the ground. This second tarp protected bushes, shrubs and ground cover. It also protected our windows and window screens from damage by falling debris. I had talked with one person who used a different roofer, who did not use the heavy mesh to protect the sides of their house, had a couple of window screens damaged and was simply told "those things happen." And he had to pay for the cost of the screen repairs. Installed 9' of snow and ice shield. Sprague installed 9-feet of snow and ice shield. We had 6-feet, put on along with the previous roof, but we were always worried about leaks from ice dams with recent heavy snow storms. The 9-feet of snow and ice shield gives a better comfort factor. Replaced roofing with 50-year warranty shingles. After cleaning up the old shingles and materials a worker went over the grass around the house with a very wide (about 3-feet) powerful magnet on wheels and then used a shorter magnet. He was picking up roofing nails here and there. He particularly checked the areas around the dumpster and the driveway. Our previous roofer of about 20-to-25 years ago did not pay attention to this detail and we would occasionally find nails in the lawn and near the driveway.

The sales process was very thorough, but definitely included a hard sell - by someone who is clearly knowledgeable, but also clearly a sales professional (and he was good at his job, because we bought the work!) The explanation of the problems we were facing was clear, thorough and well-documented, but I found it irritating that the sales person insisted that I (who had two small kids and was pregnant at the time) had to sit through the whole pitch with my husband - it took up 2 hours of a Saturday afternoon! I honestly didn't want to be involved with any of this project, but that seemed to be how they wanted to do things. I also thought that the price was high, but didn't have a chance to confirm or deny that because the whole method of presenting the problems, providing the estimate, and using the whole "agree now, and we'll give you a few thousand dollars' discount," was designed to close the sale without the client having a chance to get other estimates. And that's business smarts, and understandable given the time they put into preparing the project plan and estimate, but it still raised my hackles. The work itself proceeded in a timely manner and the workers were all personable, professional and respectful and responsive - and that mattered as the work was underway when we had just brought a new baby home. They did make an effort to not be obtrusive, to keep the work space tidy and safe, and to otherwise not disrupt our life too much. I asked them to make a few extra passes over the areas where they were working to make sure roofing nails and debris weren't where the kids play, and they were good about that. In terms of billing, they wanted a deposit, a portion at the start, a portion mid-way, and a portion upon completion. For the mid-way portion, one of the workers handed me a bill (for $11,000!) in the morning, then knocked and asked for the check in the afternoon. And then he gave me the final bill the next day. I found that off-putting: I would have expected that the project manager would be the one dealing with the money - as well as keeping us up to speed on what was done, what was happening next, and making sure we felt good about those checkpoints. I'm not in the habit if just handing thousands of dollars to whoever knocks on my door and says "we need the money." But, annoying as the process was, they certainly didn't give me any trouble when I asked to be updated, or for them to wait until my husband returned from a business trip to see what had been done, etc. So, not unreasonable. My overall impression is that they know how a roof should go on, and that they use the highest quality materials and that their workers know what they're doing. That also means it will cost you, and - as with any roof project, I would imagine - it's hard to know whether the whole thing is paying off until the bad weather hits. So, we'll see what next winter holds.
Description of Work: The project included repairs to include replacing flashing, replacing shingles in angles and valleys, repairing historic chimney masonry, creating custom copper gutters in areas prone to backup and ice-damming, replacing ridge vent, and installing ventilation fan.

Salesman inspected my roof and got back to us within 2 weeks or so. He was really high pressure and would not even call my insurance agent to discuss repairs needed to provide details for a settlement unless I gave him a check for several thousand dollars as a deposit on the job. He would not leave papers for me to review before signing a contract with him. Instead of giving me an estimate to repair storm damage with comparable materials, he gave me prices for far more expensive options ranging from $50,000 to over $90,000, yes $90,000! (my insurance agent, who appears to be a reasoable guy) gave me a preliminary check for about $3,000 to repair the roof). I am sure they have reasons for how they do business, but they will certainly not be doing business with me. Their attitude was "my way or the highway".

Thank you for your post. At the start of every job our “salesmen” set very clear expectations to ensure that we start off on the right foot with every customer. Over the past 40+ years we have come to know quite well that clear communication is a necessity to achieve the best results and highest customer satisfaction. In this case it would have been very clearly stated on the initial meeting that in order for us to work on your behalf with an insurance agency on a claim as the adviser that we would need to be under contract to do so. It is then the job of our “salesmen” to address any questions or concerns the customer might have in moving forward under those terms to ensure that it is something the customer is interested in pursuing. If not, we would never waste the customers time or ours with a follow up meeting to present our options after our “salesman” had spent multiple hours diagnosing the problem and scoping the appropriate project. Therefore, if a follow up meeting is scheduled to present our findings, as it was in this case, there should be no surprise when a customer decides not to contract us in any capacity that we would not be able to go forward and work on your behalf with the insurance agency. While we are always looking to serve our customers to their satisfaction that does not mean giving away work and taking on unwarranted liability. As for the options presented, our job is to present ALL of our findings including but not limited to just the “storm damage.” Anything less we would not be doing our job and the customer justice. For example, if you hurt your finger you would go to the doctor. When you get to the doctor’s office you tell them all your symptoms and that you want to know what it will take to get your finger fixed. While the doctor is inspecting your finger they also notice that you have an issue with your wrist and elbow. Now you only went to the doctor for your finger but would it be in your best interest for him to present all of his findings or just address what you thought was your only problem? Whether you decide to do anything about the issues which are presented is your choice but it is our job to make you aware of them and help you make an informed decision. Customers who decide that we are the right company to address some, any or all of their needs will see that we are with them every step of the way to make sure that they get the right job done right. In this case, that would include working with your insurance agent, who is not a roofing professional, to help them understand the needs of the home and the appropriate coverage warranted. Insurance agents as nice or as reasonable as they might seem are in the business to minimize your claim. For instance, if you get into a car accident would you work with a professional auto shop to make sure ALL of the damage is covered by your insurance or would you take the check cut from the insurance company based on the five minute inspection by the appraiser? Again we always appreciate the comments as they will only help us continue to better ourselves and better serve the customer. If we can be of any help in the future please let us know and we will gladly do so.

The guy that came out to the house took a lot of pictures and wouldn't give an estimate until we could sit down with him for over an hour to go over the plan. Basically, he wasted a lot of time and finally told us the price was going to be $25-30k! Our other 3 estimates ranged from $3,500-$4,600. He told us we would likely have to redo the work if we went with one of the other companies. We told him that even if that did happen we could replace the roof 7 times over and still be ahead of the game vs. going with his price. (All companies were using the same Landmark shingles/materials.) In the end, we obviously chose a different company (one that we had used on our previous house) and have been extremely happy with the work and grateful that we have an extra $25k in our pocket!

Thank you for the post and feedback. As you stated our certified experts are extremely thorough in their analysis of your home. Our certified experts are also very thorough in their explanation of their findings. This is explicitly stated from the moment a customer calls us and is reiterated by the certified expert. In exchange for our time and effort all that we ask in return is that we are afforded the opportunity to present our findings and discuss your options. By discussing the options and clearly understanding the project customers are able to make a better decision and choose the right project. During said discussion ALL of our findings are presented. Anything less than that we would simply not be fulfilling our duty to the customer to make them aware of any and all issues we have seen and provide them a solution. Having said that, it was not clearly stated in your comments that the “$25-30K” we proposed was not the same scope as the other “3 estimates ranged from $3,500-$4,600”. In fact, our estimate included a number of other problem areas on your home that needed to be addressed. Therefore, the price comparison provided in your comments was not truly comparing apples to apples. Sorry we could not be of more help this time and hopefully our reply clarifies some of the points of issue. We are happy to hear that your job went well. Thanks again for the feedback feel free to call with any questions or issues that arise in the future 781-455-0556.

I had a painful experience with the estimator. He talked and talked and talked and was unable to read signals to "get on with it already"! He DID climb up and take pictures of every part of my roof and he DID do a beautiful drawing of my roof and gutters. But in the end the cost was prohibitive and I fundamentally didn't trust him.
Description of Work: The estimator did a thorough job of evaluating my roof, gutters etc. He took extensive pictures, drew beautiful diagrams and explained in excruciating detail what trouble I was in if I did not deal with the things that he deemed problematic. He did not provide a written cost estimate, although he told me about how much it would cost (four times the amount of other roofers) and belittled the prices he assumed were given by other contractors.

Thank you for the post and feedback. At the front end of any appointment it is confirmed with and agreed to by the customer that all those who have input be present in exchange for our time and effort. In this case not all parties were present and therefore no written cost estimate was provided. Without having seen the price alongside the associated scope versus the prices and scope of other companies I am not sure how one would be able to thoroughly assess their project based on “about how much it would cost.” From your own account the estimator did a thorough job of evaluation and I expect nothing less would have occurred when presented. Again I thank you for your feedback and encourage you to call us with any further issues or questions 781-455-0556.

The price was reasonable and we know that they were a little more expensive than some other roofers, but they are a local company with a good reputation and a neighbor had a good experience with them. The roof has Spanish tiles and most roofers I contacted wouldn't even work on them. This company had some staff who knew how to work on this type roof, These were the reasons we hired the company. Work began on time and took a total of 5 weeks from start to finish. The workmanship on the roof was excellent and the gutters were also done very well. They use a subcontractor to do the gutters. On the positive side, the gutter installation technique was changed saving $2100 due to a change in the hanger system, and one flashing didn't have to be repaired and a $800 credit resulted. There was added charges for copper brackets and wood, which was in the contract, was about $680. There were two minor issues that we had with the project which were resolved at the end. First, the gutters on the house were copper and we asked that they pile the copper in the yard and I would bring it in for scrap, knowing the value of the copper. This was agreed with the salesman but not written into the contract The gutter people took the gutters (every last piece) and when I asked where they were, I was told they never leave the "trash" and it wasn't in the contract. I was upset about the scrap value, which I estimated at $500-700. This was based on my trip to a junkyard with a downspout I had in the garage, which they paid me $2.20 a pound, $29 for the 10 ft downspout. The second issue was an "add on" work change to the roof. The leak on the dormer was fixed on one side but the roofer said the other side is bad and the stack pipe needed repair, adding $3600 to the project. The company was running a special in September of 10% off roof work and I asked that the 10% be taken off, and their response was that it was a sales incentive and change orders aren't discounted. We had a meeting with the salesman and project manager and after about 1 hour, we agreed to split the difference for the copper and discount, and received a credit of $585.00. Other than the issues listed, they were very professional, the roofer was terrific and became the intermediary on a couple of issues. He stayed late one night to clear the materials for a party we were having. The project was done right the first time. I would use them again but I would make sure that anything we agree on is in the contract.
Description of Work: Replace gutters and downspouts on the entire house. Repair a roof leak on a dormer and a flat roof on a bow window in the dining room.

First and foremost, thank you for your kind and detailed response. We at G.F Sprague truly appreciate all the feedback we get as it allows us to better serve our customers. In terms of your comment regarding the contract, unless otherwise stipulated, contractor always owns the disposal of all debris and salvage. When there is value to the salvage material such as copper that value is recognized in the bid of a project. It is highly unusual for a customer to salvage their own copper. In this case, the amount of the bid would be higher to account for lost value of the salvage to the contractor. We are glad to hear that all your issues were resolved and that you were happy with the outcome of the project. Thank you for your business and we hope to work with you in the future.

Someone came to inspect the roof. He was very professional. We went over some things and he said he'd make an appointment to meet me in person to review the estimate. We made that appointment but he canceled the day before. They wanted to reschedule for the next week. I said I didn't have time and would they please just send me the estimate and we could discuss it by phone. She said they don't do that, that they really need to meet in person. I said I just didn't have time right now but if they sent the estimate with various options, I'd review it and set up a time if it looked like something I'd consider. I haven't heard back from them. I don't like this kind of high pressure tactic. I saw that someone else complained about the same thing on the List so I guess I shouldn't have called them in the first place but there aren't many roofers who do slate roofs.

We made a major roof leak during the early spring heavy rains. We contacted Sprague Roofing since we knew they were experts on slate roofing and we had been pleased with their prior work. Evelyn phoned right back and scheduled someone to come out even though it was still raining and there were many calls. Hal Davis came out, took pictures, looked at our prior roof work documents, and said he would get back with a report. Hal met with my husband and myself and showed us what he believed was the cause of the leak and clearly outlined the steps needed to fix the roof.He was a great detective, Even though you could not see any missing slate , Hal knew what to recommend to uncover the problem. You could tell Hal had years of experience with slate roof work and problem solving. They scheduled the repair work right away. The job was done on schedule with good cleanup. We have not had any leaks since the repair work.
Description of Work: Repaired leak in slate roof. Removed slate from left front side of roof, installed ice and water rubber shield, inspected and replaced 10 slates, replaced counter flashing, applied chimney sealer on left side of chimney, cleaned and inspected gutters, installed aluminum rake on edge and junctions.

I did not like having to work with G. F. Sprague & Company at all. They came out for about an hour and a half to look over our roof and following that spent another hour and a half explaining what they would be doing to replace the roof. I was working full time when they came out and I thought that since they spent so much time they knew what they were doing, so I did not bother to get any other quotes. As it turns out they were at least fifty percent higher than the other competition. What really got me however was that they were supposed to do the really bad part of our roof before the winter so that there would be no major problems. They did not even deliver the supplies until February. I called them about it and ended talking with Sprague himself. He was very rude to me and told me that it was my fault, because I was trying to act like the general contractor. He blamed me because I had the gutters installed first. I told him that all of that was in the contract. The gutters were to go in first and the one roof was to be done before winter. When the foreman came out he asked if I wanted to have the skylights installed while the roof was torn up, so I went ahead and got the skylights that he told me. They did not come out for about another month after that and the skylights that he told me to get were not the correct size and by them I could not return them. So I with held the money that I put out for the skylights from their payment. We ended up in small claims court and unfortunately it did not come across like they lost, because we ended up in remediation. They were very difficult to work with and they did not deliver what they said they would deliver. They clearly did not do the work when they said that they would. They were extremely expensive. I would not suggest them to anyone who is looking to get a new roof.
Description of Work: G. F. Sprague & Company came out to replace the roof on our home.

We appreciate your response and feedback even when it comes 9 years later. I am glad that you had no issues with the quality of work performed. By definition “The distinctive function of the General (or prime) Contractor is to coordinate and direct the activities of the various parties and agencies involved with the construction and to assume full, centralized responsibility for the delivery of the finished project within the specified time.” Due to the fact that you were conducting multiple projects at once and were involved in the ordering of material for those jobs in order to save money that would make you the general contractor and therefore responsible for the issues of timing and or incorrect materials ordered by yourself. There are a number of reasons why you would never put gutters on before a new roof one of which is that it causes the installation to take considerably more time. At G.F Sprague we are not only highly skilled experts but we are students of the business and continue to learn from every project to improve on how we can best serve the customer. From this project, we learned that it is never worth the risk that you have described and or in the customer’s best interest to let the customer, at their request, assume the responsibility of ordering materials and as a result we no longer allow it. Again I thank you for such a detailed post and wish you the best of luck on future endeavors.

Called Sprague. We set up an appointment. An estimator came out took pictures and talked to me about our problem. Couple days later Bob came back to meet with us, showed us the work needed. His proposal was larger than others but I sign up for it based on value. Project started 3 weeks later. During project they found some rotten roof siding and it was all handled excellant!!!.

Thank you for taking the time to post! We at G.F Sprague always look to do the right job the right way at the right price to provide the highest value to our customers. Your feedback is greatly appreciated and helps us to better serve our customers.
We met extensively with the person who sold us the project. He went over in detail all aspects of the project. We already knew from several years of experience, that the project was far from straightforward, and it was definitely worth our while to hear the pros and cons of various solutions, and then to help make the decision on what to do. The crew showed up exactly when expected, and took about as long as they had estimated to finish the project. Throughout the entire job, the project manager (Bob Scribner) was always easy to get hold of and easy to communicate with, as ongoing decisions had to get made (usually on relatively minor points). Conrad was a member of the Sprague crew who also worked closely with us and advised us about the copper work -- and we felt he was a superb craftsman. During the winter, we experienced some obscure problem with one of the downspouts, due to some severe ice dams. Sprague was over in literally one hour to make adjustments, which was critical because the ice was melting and we were extremely concerned about leaks inside and damage that day. We also called Bob in the spring to have him come and inspect all of the work as part of the warranty. On that day, when we needed some adjustments, he had Paul come out to help with some final changes and to make sure everything was OK (which it was). The problems with leaking, which had been with us for years, seem to have finally been fixed. We really appreciated working with Bob, especially his responsiveness and patience with questions.
Description of Work: We had Sprague replace some problematic wooden gutters with copper gutters on a large portion of our roof, as well as replacing the shingles on that section. We also had Sprague do significant repairs on a couple of flat portions of the roof covered in rubber membrane. There had been leaks in the house. We added two additional aluminum downspouts on the front and side of the house and had them repair an area of wood fascia that had broken off, that was attached to the gutters.

This was a big project but it worked out well. The winter weather created some delays since they can't roof when it's really icy.
Description of Work: We had a complete roof system: shingles, valleys, gutters, the works. Our roof had not been touched in more than 20 years. Although it was not the cheapest, the folks at GF Sprague did a fabulous job. They were very professional, courteous, easy to work with. The workers were dependable and careful about the neighborhood. All the nails were picked up, too. The other professionals Sprague recommended were topnotch: Jeff Smith the mason for chimney re-pointing and Jeff McLinden for general contracting. Bob Driscoll was easy to deal with: easy to get on the phone and took care of anything right away. They did a great job and I would recommend them.

Thanks for the great post and positive feedback. We are glad to know that our company and its professionals delivered you the top quality service and craftsmanship you deserve and we expect. It was great working with you again!
EXCELLENT!!! When I first met with Dan I did not understand why we had to meet us again. I wondered and questioned why couldn't he just put the estimate in the mail. After giving it more thought I met him and I'm glad I did. I actually new what I bought and why. When the project was completed 2 weeks later the Project Manager, Bob, walked me threw the project and showed me the pieces and parts of my project. I am very happy and pleased with G F Sprague's performance.

Thank you for your gracious comments. We are glad that you found value in sitting down and actually learning about what it was you were buying. Not surprisingly, by taking the appropriate time on the front end you were able to make a more educated decision which resulted in the project going smoothly and most importantly you being happy with the outcome! Let us know if there is any other way we can be of assistance. Thanks again we appreciate your business.

We hired Sprague to fix our wooden gutters. One year later they were still leaking and we asked them to come back and fix their work. They never responded even though the work was supposedly guaranteed.

Thank you for your posting on Angie’s List. However, your comments are missing quite a few relevant details regarding your project. Initially we offered new built in gutters to solve your problems. Ultimately you decided the scope was too large and we whittled it down to a repair of the existing 9 gutters. In our proposal you were made aware that attempting to repair the gutters may not work due to existing conditions. We fixed 21 corners 2 of which leaked yielding an extremely high repair success rate of 91%. In our experience, most customers have been extremely happy to have a substantially diminished scope yield anywhere near 91%. We understand the need to solve any issue by implementing the minimum scope at the lowest cost yielding the greatest success. Our goal is always to properly diagnose the issues and provide the best solution.

I had a mysterious leak in my roof and water was coming into my house. I called a roofer I had used regularly over the past. They came and patched a valley. The leak was still there. Then they wouldn't return my calls. I mentioned this to a colleague who recommended GF Sprague. He told me it might be expensive, but that they did exceptional work. I called Sprague and someone came to my house within a couple of days. The representative took pictures of my roof, and pointed out all the problems. Someone came a few days later to repair the leak. It was very hard to locate and he spent a whole day finding it, repairing it, and testing it. This was to accommodate me because I was leaving town the next day. I've never had a roofer deal with the problems so thoroughly and scientifically. Instead of a cheap patch job, Sprague removed the previously botched work and replaced everything, including rotted wood which I could see in my attic but no other roofer wanted to deal with it. There were some weather delays (it was winter) but every time an appointment had to be postponed, they notified me in advance. The workers were efficient, knowledgeable, and helped explain everything that needed to be done. It was a lot of money, but worth every penny. I have never been so satisfied with roofing work, and I certainly would use Sprague again the next time I had a roofing problem. I see companies on Angie's list that have "A" ratings that I have used before and would give a "D" to. Sprague deserves my "A."

What bothered me about this sales guy was that he kept on referring to all these pictures and reports that had been taken of my house from the previous effort but only after some serious prodding did he disclose that the roof was never worked on by them just the garage. During the walk around the house, he insisted that the whole roof needed to be redone, and he showed me that the price that they quoted the previous owner was $30k! Mind you my house is 1100 square feet. He also proceeded to tell me that my rubber roof on the first floor was in bad condition but he never even got a close look at it. But what really made matters strange was that he would not sit down and provide me with the complete estimate of what he thought needed to be done without my wife present. (My neighbor is a contractor and he said that that is their MO.) So I essentially threw him out of my house. When I got a second opinion, this guy quoted me a price of $4k for the roof and some additional gutter work. He said the roof in the front of my house had already been repaired a few years ago and was in fine condition as was the rubber roof. This sales guy from Sprague redefined sleezy salesman! I do not like false advertisement either and the fact it took two phone calls and two visits before I understood that the roof was never part of the 'warranty' is a waste of everyone's time.
Description of Work: These guys are a scam! They sent me a flier suggesting my roof was still under warranty to entice me to call them. Since I only owned the house since 2006, I was unaware what was done to the roof and when but since the shingles on the back side of the roof are disintegrating, I figured I'd better call. I initially spoke to the owner who seemed nice enough but then out comes the sales guy. After two visits, it finally was apparent to me that Sprague never worked on my roof (he repaired my garage roof) and therefore it was not covered under their "warranty".

Thank you for your response. We are glad to hear that you received our warranty card. The warranty we provide on our work does not end when a home changes owners. It does not matter to us what work we did or who now owns the house we will always offer to inspect our work to make sure it is performing as promised. False advertisement would be sending a warranty card to a home that we never worked on which is not the case here. The fact that the salesman pointed out what was done by us and what was not done by the previous owner should have pretty clearly defined what was covered under the warranty. For example, buying new tires on your car would not constitute warranty of the entire car. Reviewing the proposal with all parties that have a vested interest in the project, in this case you and your wife, allows everyone to air out their questions and as you had said not waste anyone’s time. Price is the bottom line and by not providing the scope which brought you to that bottom line it is impossible accurately to compare the two. For example, if you were pricing out two cars one for 10K and the other for 5K and they both appear to be the same you would always pick the 5K. However, upon further inspection of the car’s scope you realize the one for 5K has no engine and the one for 10K does. Which one would you pick now? Roofing is a blind item and cannot be driven like a car and that is why it is so imperative that ALL parties understand the scope of what is being purchased. Anything less is not in the customer’s best interest and that we simply will not do.
