Since they never gave me an estimate, no job was done obviously.
Description of Work: Just as the previous person commented, I had an estimate for my landscaping project. The person who showed up to conduct estimate was very professional and friendly, however the company never gave me the actual estimate. I called and left a numerous messages but they never got back to me.

I had Thayer come for an estimate on a landscaping and patio job. I expressed interest in getting this work done soon by a local company. The person was prompt and friendly and came on a rainy and dismal day without complaint to look at our yard. He said he would get an estimate for me. After 17 days with no estimate, I called back and left a message and now it is 24 days later and I still do not have an estimate and my call was ignored. I saw another review similar to this and wish I had listened, as I feel I wasted my time with A company that apparently didn't want our business, very disappointing,

We are consistently pleased and extermely satisfied with Thayer Nursery. They are a wonderful nursery, provide top quality services and product and on top of that they take a personal interest in their customers. Overall, a great organization.
Description of Work: Purchased a cord and 1/2 of kiln dried firewood from thayer nursery. This is the 3rd year that we have purchased fire wood from Thayer Nursery and have been very pleased every year. The cost is more than fire wood that is not kiln dried but we are able to store the wood in our basement (bcause it has been kiln dried and tehre a no bugs in it) and it appears to burn hotter and longer as a result of being kild dried.

Thayer had great reviews here on Angie's List so I selected them along with a few others to obtain estimates on delivering a half cord of firewood to my home. They were by far the friendliest and most helpful of all the companies that I called. Furthermore, when I called them back a week later to actually place the order, the price was EXACTLY the same (including delivery) as I was quoted originally. (Should work that way, but it doesn't always). They were able to schedule delivery for the very next day even though I live about 45 minutes away from the nursery. Upon arrival, Peter was very personable and friendly and was excited about the product. Definitely an honest half cord...if anything, they over delivered...a ton of wood! Threw it in the wood stove that day and it burns great. Dry...clean....fabulous experience!

For the consultation, Josh asked what our goals were and I told him low maintenance and to get rid of the fence we had. He immediately suggested sod, as it would cost little more than grass seeds based on the small area, and he suggested changing the already existing definition of the yard with cobbles. I agreed with him and he returned with an estimate several days later. We also received an estimate from Greencastle Gardens that was about $200 less than the Thayer estimate (the $1500 above includes a 5% discount for paying in advance) but we were eager to get the work done and the Greencastle estimate came in later than we had anticipated. Josh had given me his cell phone but he wasn't very responsive regarding the process going forward after we had prepaid to have the work done, or scheduling for the work to be done. My husband and I had to call him several times and leave messages at the Thayer Nursery main number before getting a response. We finally got a confirmed date and Jimmy came (right on time) with two others to complete the job a couple weeks later (they had offered to do it sooner but we were going to be out of town and someone needed to be there to water the sod). It was more work than I had anticipated and took most of the day. Initially we were not going to have the large bushes in the front removed but Jimmy suggested that we do so given their age and condition. He did so without an extra charge. Jimmy was responsive each time I went out to check on the work and answered all of my questions. At the end he gave us detailed instructions on how to care for the sod short term and long term and told us that we were welcome to call the nursery with additional questions. He told us that they often did work in the neighborhood and that he would drive by the check on the sod when he was around. They did a great job and I can't even begin to describe the improvement to our front yard. It is something that I am confident we, as non-gardeners, will be able to maintain and we are still receiving compliments from our neighbors.
Description of Work: Thayer nursey came out to provide a consultation on landscaping that we needed done in our small front yard and the work itself. The work included fence removal, removal of weeds and grass for sod to be laid down, removal of 2 large bushes, and a separation between the sod and mulch with cobbles.

The price they quoted us was $10,000. I have heard about their reputations in the area and the ratings on the list, but unfortunately they were pretty expensive. They seemed to be a professional company and I liked what he was proposing, but it was just more than I wanted to pay for that work.

The quality of the composted manure and food scraps was excellent. It was clean, with no glass or plastic scraps, and it was of a uniform consistency with no rocks or twigs or other debris. We will order again from them next year. Delivery was prompt and timely. The person who took our order over the phone was knowledgeable and helpful. The price is a little higher than we are used to but it was well worth it.

This winter, I called around to get prices on firewood as I've done in the past. As usual, after recovering from the shock of hearing prices for kiln-dried wood, I called and requested half a cord to be delivered and dumped in my driveway. They came a few days later, and although they tried to accommodate my request for a particular time they were a couple of hours later than they said. Still, they put the wood exactly where I asked. I've bought from Thayer for a number of years, and I've always had great wood from them. It burns cleanly, they come when they say they will, and you get the full amount (no short cords from these guys). Their logs are nicely sized, and burn about how they should. I've bought wood from lots of folks over the years, including from Massey (stay away!) and the Firewood Guy (my second choice). I like Thayer's wood better than the FIrewood Guy's because the latter's looks more perfect but has such large logs that they don't burn as well, and is ultimately more expensive. If you want your wood stacked, Thayer doesn't do it officially but you can pay PJ (JP? I can't remember) to do it for a negotiated amount. I think it would have been another $95 to stack the half cord I bought this winter. In the past, I've had them stack it and they are very efficient and stack it correctly, where you ask. In retrospect, I probably should have spent the extra hundred and had them do it again, as it took me forever to carry it and stack it on my porch - but I was feeling miserly and had already spent a lot! Definitely, buy wood from Thayer. you won't be sorry. Get enough to last into next season, if you can; if you have a garage or dry place to keep it, it only gets better over time.

We would highly recommend them. They did a beautiful job of clearing the area before they planted. They are not the cheapest, but they are worth every cent that they charge. They are a little on the expensive side. We got other estimates. We would absolutely use them in the future.

They were great. I feel like the wood could be a little bit better. We payed extra to have it kiln dried, it didn't seem like it was dramatically better than the wood I have gotten in the past. Perfect. They showed up when they said they would. They promised their wood was great and it is. We're realizing this especially right now because we have burned through all the wood we got from Thayer. We just went to the grocery store for some wood bundles for these last few cold nights. What a disappointment! The stuff from Thayer burned easily and was clean. We stored it all winter in our basement without any noticeable increase in creepy-crawlies. This average grocery store bundle was wet and smelly. Tonight's fire could barely get going because of the wet and rotted wood. I'm sticking with Thayer for all my wood needs.

The back yard of my property looks gorgeous. They did a quality job I must say. Now if I could get looming trees out of that area so I know it won't be destroyed, I will be happy. They really made a beautiful area out of this area and I am pleased with them. I can tell you that.

While a bit on the higher side in terms of some of the other quotes I received I decided to use Thayer Nursery because of prior experience with them and references out here on Angie's List. Josh was very knowledgeable and professional. It took a couple weeks to actually get the estimate and then once I signed the contract to do the work it took about another month for them to come out and do the work. A little longer than I would have liked on both accounts but I suspect it is the nature of the business in the spring. The crew that came out to do the work was very professional and did a great job. The area looks amazing and I think it is at a stage where my fiance and I cannot maintain the current condition. Before we just didn't know where to start or have the time to do what needed to be done.
Description of Work: I purchased my house in October of last year. The prior owners had not lived there for over a year and the landscaping (hedges, gardens, trees, etc) had not been touched in a longggg time. I got several estimates for general clean-up of the property. The owner, Josh, came out one afternoon and we walked around the house talking about what I wanted done. Josh also provided his thoughts and ideas on what could be done. Several activities including 1) pruning back (growing out over sidewalk and cutting about 4 feet off the top) a very large hedge that ran along the front of the house and down the side street, 2) pruning several small trees around the house, 3) cleaning up, weeding and staking out several quite overgrown flower gardens, 4) removing a stack of rotted fire wood; 5) pruning back several Forsynthia bushes; and 6) putting down mulch around the property/gardens. The biggest part of the job was clearly the hedge along the front & side of the house.

I called the nursery and there was someone available to answer the phone (rather than leave a message and wait to see if my call was returned). He called me within 2 days, and made the delivery 2 days later at the time scheduled.

I was very pleased with service. PJ spent three hours carrying the wood into the basement and stacking it. He also cleaned up very well afterwards. I think the price is fair $490 for the wood and delivery; and $110 for the stacking. The wood burns very clean and since it was going in the basement I definitely wanted to be sure it was insect free.

People on the phone were very helpful and knowledgeable. Wood was delivered earlier in the day than scheduled and was put where I requested it.
Description of Work: Ordered one cord of kiln fired/dried firewood from Thayer Nursery. Price is a little higher than traditionally seasoned firewood but my research indicated that kiln fired firewood burns hotter, cleaner, longer and can be stored internally because all the moisture and bugs are removed through the kiln firing. Planned to order 1/2 cord but full cord was minimal increase in price.

Response from THAYER NURSERY
KILN-DRIED FIREWOOD IS MORE EXPENSIVE BECAUSE IT IS A SUPERIOR PRODUCT VERSES SEASONED WOOD. KILN-DRIED MEANS THE WOOD HAS BEEN BAKED IN AN OVEN AT TEMPERATURES OVER 200 DEGREES FOR THREE DAYS THUS ENSURING THE MOISTURE CONTENT IS REDUCED TO BELOW 25%. THE MOISTURE CONTENT CONTROLS THE AMOUNT OF SMOKE THAT A LOG PRODUCES. KILN-DRIED FIREWOOD IS EASIER TO LIGHT, IT IS A CLEANER BURN WITH LESS CREOSOTE BUILD-UP IN THE CHIMNEY SO IT IS A SAFER BURN. IN ADDITION, COOKING THE WOOD KILLS ALL THE BUGS AND MOLD SO THAT YOU CAN STORE IT SAFELY IN YOUR HOUSE OR GARAGE. SEASONED WOOD MEANS THE WOOD IS JUST CUT & SPLIT AND LEFT TO AGE NATURALLY FOR OVER A YEAR. MOST SEASONED WOOD SUPPLIERS DON’T HAVE THE SPACE TO STORE LARGE QUANTITIES OR CAN NOT AFFORD TO STORE THE SPLIT WOOD FOR THAT LENGTH OF TIME. SO MOST "SEASONED WOOD" HAS ONLY BEEN AGED FOR THE CURRENT SPRING AND SUMMER, NOT A YEAR. THIS MEANS THERE IS A VERY HIGH MOISTURE CONTENT. THUS IT WILL BE HARDER TO START, IT WILL SMOKE, HISS AND POP A LOT. BECAUSE WE DO NOT CARRY SEASONED WOOD, A NEGATIVE REVIEW IS NOT JUSTIFIED.

WE HAD AN APPOINTMENT SCHEDULED FOR MONDAY THE 24TH. THE HOMEOWNER CALLED & LEFT A MESSAGE ON FRIDAY THE 21ST, SAYING SHE WAS NOT GOING TO BE THERE BUT WOULD BE AVAILABLE TO SPEAK TO US VIA HER CELL PHONE. WE CALLED HER ON SUNDAY THE 23RD AND LEFT A MESSAGE TO CONFIRM A NEW DAY AND TIME. APPARENTLY THERE WAS A MISUNDERSTANDING BECAUSE THE HOMEOWNER DID NOT GET OR MISUNDERSTOOD THE MESSAGE. SHE CALLED ON MONDAY & SAID SHE HAD BEEN WAITING BY HER CELL PHONE ALL DAY AND NO ONE HAD CALLED HER FROM HER PROPERTY. SHE BELIEVED WE BLEW OFF HER APPOINTMENT. OUR POLICY IS NOT TO GO ONTO ANY PROPERTY WITHOUT SOMEONE BEING THERE. I BELIEVE IT WAS JUST A MISCOMMUNICATION.
