He never showed to the apointment and I had to get a refund on my deal from Angie's List. It may have just been a misunderstanding.

He stated that he has no obligation to honor the big deal and he was not even wanting to accept the payment of $69 towards work that I was requesting. I will not use this company for any future work.
Description of Work: He didn't do any work. I purchased the big deal for $69 for 2 hours of handyman service. I could not get a hold of them for several months. Apparently I had been emailing the wrong contact person and later I was told that they had left the company. This was the first point of contact so I figured I would continue to try and contact them to schedule via email. As a last resort I emailed the company today and spoke with the owner.

The closer was extremely cheap, and now needs to be replaced. I wish that Dan had asked me if I was willing to pay a little extra for better materials-- I would have gladly agreed. The handyman did quality work, but the materials were of low quality.
Description of Work: Some back stairs were replaced. Back door was fitted with pneumatic closer. This closer has since ripped off its screws and fallen off. The quality of the work was fine, and performed in a timely fashion. My biggest complaint is the quality of the materials. The lumber was of the lowest grade and full of knots, which are hard to paint.

The first handyman De Angeli Home Improvement sent over, Luis, was new to the company and not interested in working for them or me. Once Dan was made aware of this he and Leila, his office manager, made sure that one of their trusted handymen, Noel , arrived the next week. Noel was punctual, professional, efficient and provided excellent service. While the first handyman was a problem Dan and Leila did everything in their power to make things right. I couldn't have asked for more.
Description of Work: Removed shadow boxes from one location on wall to another. Patched and repainted walls. Secured the wooden front between the dishwasher and stove in the kitchen. Moved furniture, bar cabinet, for one location in the living room to another. Fixed the fan in the bathroom ceiling.

The original work I contracted for through the Big Deal was making a safer railing system for my scary cellar staircase. The work was top quality and the result was better than I could have expected. Dan and Luis did a great job. Next I had them replace my uneven, steep, and poorly built front steps. Again, very good, intelligent work. That job also turned out beautifully. The one sore point was painting - I assumed Dan would do it, but he said most homeowners did it themselves and it would cost extra. I said fine, and we scheduled it. Weeks and week went by - he kept giving me a date then not showing up. I began to wish he had simply said no, he didn't paint. Finally it was done and it looks great.
Description of Work: Rebuilt railing on cellar staircase. Rebuilt front steps. I can't remember exactly what I paid, but it was a fair price.

I called Dan on 3/11/13. regarding work that needed to be done that I wanted to hire him for. Fronm almost the moment that we spoke he wasn't really friendly or helpful. After explaning the job which is small butg including replacing two windows, he said that the job was too small and that he would not be interested in doiung it. According to his bio he does big and small jobs and this was too small? That is something that did not seem right about this especially since I was lead to believe that the size should not matter.

I have talked to Dan a few times on the phone. I got the impression that he knew what he was doing. I mentioned I could use some help adjusting an interior door in my apartment. He said he could do that but it would probably take at least a half day. We agreed that I would call him some other time when I needed him. I know I only spent $69. for this "Big Deal" but after I left a message that I would like him to clean out my gutter on the second floor no one has contacted me. So at this point I cannot say that I would or would not do business with him again. Please do not think that I am saying Dan is not reliable. I realize this is a small item and I am sure he is very busy. Respectfully, Ed Smith..............781-321-3557.

The work that was done by Dan's crew in the end was just fine - the process of arranging the work is the reason for the overall "C". I contacted Dan via email, and he asked me for my address so he could come by the house in order to give an estimate. I sent the address to him, but then I didn't hear back from him for almost two weeks. I had to send another email to prompt him to reply with an estimate. The process of arranging the work was a game of phone tag and rescheduling due to availability of his guys and weather issues. At one point, Dan even asked my wife to send him a reminder email about the date he promised (over the phone) to send someone. I guess I feel like if you want the job, you shouldn't be asking your client to send you a reminder.
Description of Work: We hired Dan to re-attach two downspouts (on our two story house) that had been detached because of the high winds from hurricane Sandy.

The most important take away is to be clear about the scope of the work and have some sense of the labor time and materials needed. This will give you a gauge of the expected timeframe and your out of pocket costs. The job involved replacing existing pull down attic stairs. I supplied the stairs and trim and they did the rest with little intrusion and good quality work. The job lasted a bit longer than expected (about an hour) but the overall experience was without incident and just what you would hope for when you hire someone.

See above! It went "swimmingly" - I'm moving to Cleveland and wish I could engage Dan there as well!
Description of Work: Dan D'Angeli and his crew are superb! Their "word is their bond." They do what they say they are going to do, when they say they are going to do it and the quality initiative is obvious in the planning, considering and tackling solutions. I would recommend Dan and his colleagues to anyone for any project large or small. Conscientious, professional and beyond accommodating. I am impressed - and that is not a frequent event for me! Here's what they did: Removed a monstrous mantle mirror, repaired the wall following removal, repainted to a perfect match and disposed of the item. Put screens and all sliding doors and windows "back on track." Installed 2 new bathroom faucet sets - more complicated than anticipated and less expensive than any plumber! Repaired and repainted "doggie" bites from moldings Left the property neater and tidier than they found it. Work began 5 days before the promised start date, and finished 7 days prior to start date. I am beyond pleased! Debi B. Jamaica Plain

The project went well. The only hitch was a pair of pipes in the part of the wall that was to be removed, which caused some delay. My mother-in-law is in love with her new closet and brings guests into her bedroom just to show it off. Noel showed up on time every day and worked straight through. Even on the day when the pipe was moved he came to work a few hours in the afternoon.
Description of Work: There was a very awkward closet in the downstairs bedroom. my mother-in-law knew what was wrong (door was too small, could not reach all the space available), but not what she wanted. Dan and Noel walked her through options and decided on making a wider main door and installing cabinets in the previously unused overhead space. Noel performed the work with Dan overseeing.

An employer can't always know what their employees are up to but the folks at the di Angeli company went out of their to make sure that my second experience was a positive one. I appreciate that they made the effort to send someone else quickly and ensured that I wasn't inconvenienced. It is easy when things go as planned but the real test is how things are handled when there is a problem. The folks at the di Angeli company made sure that this customer was satisfied. I would recommend them highly and plan to use their services again in 2013.
Description of Work: On November 8, 2012, Luis, an employee of Dan de Angeli Home Improvement arrived at my home. He looked at the various jobs I wanted done and then informed me that the work would take more than one visit. After retrieving his tools from his truck he then secured the board between the dishwasher and stove and touched up the paint on the molding above the kitchen cabinets. He also helped me to move a cabinet from one part of my living room to the other. He then spent the rest of the time, approximately one hour, trying to convince me to hire him privately. It was a very awkward situation as I didn't think this was standard operating procedure for the de Angeli company which has Angie's List's highest rating. I emailed Leila, at the company's office, to make another appointment to have the rest of the items I wanted done tackled. I mentioned that their employee Luis had spent quite a lot of time trying to get me to hire him privately. Leila and Dan both apologized and told me that he no longer worked for the company. On November 15, 2012 the sent Noel. Noel managed to get almost all the tasks completed within the allotted 2 hour period. He was friendly and courteous and didn't try to get me to hire him outside of the company. I was very pleased with his work and attitude.

The below was written by my husband: This work was done by Luis, who was fantastic. He was easy to get along with and the quality of the work he did is very high. Dan, on the other hand, was tough to deal with. There were several other projects we needed done, but it was like pulling teeth to get information or estimates out of him. I don't know if we just didn't get along. At the end of the project, the final price was really high. The hours worked were right on, but the labor cost was high, because $100/hr is a lot for handyman services. But I was also really surprised by the cost of materials, over $550. Obviously they are all about the markup. Dan the head guy is clearly going from job to job setting things up and making the spread between what he charges and what he pays Luis, which is probably a lot less. But their invoice also says that they mark up materials 30% *and* charge you for the time (at $100/hr) they spend at hardware stores etc buying them. That really felt excessive to me. But even so, $550 for landscape timbers and a bag of cement was a lot. When I asked for an itemization, they quickly said it was a mistake and the price went down; they had overcharged us more than $200. That's a mighty profitable mistake. Even after the overcharge was fixed, this project came in at over $2500. My landscape timbers look good, but I think I probably could have had custom masonry done at that price. We had a bunch of other projects we had hoped to get these guys to do. But while I was very happy with Luis's work, paying that kind of premium for the privilege of interacting with a guy (Dan) who is hard to deal with -- and then getting overcharged on top of it -- wasn't worth it.
Description of Work: We hired this company to do some exterior cleanup of our house. We had them remove some debris, replace some rotten, termite-infested landscape timbers with new pressure-treated timbers, and do cement repair on a bulkhead door.

One of the nicest things about using this company is that they were very flexible with my schedule and even were able to come to my house at 8am on a Sunday morning to do the work. The quality of the work was very good, though admittedly it felt like it took a little longer than it should have (even though it was all covered under the Angie's List "Big Deal" that I purchased). Plus, the price was right. All in all, I would use them again for similar work that comes up in the future.

Dan was very responsive to our specific needs and design requests. He also discussed the possibilites and explained them clearly. the man who did the actual work was friendly and reliable plus very skilled. The first step was to send Dan pictures of the existing front door where we wanted the handrail installed. I did my own research so that I had basic knowledge and some idea of options. In reviewing them with /dan he considered the historic nature of our house and the varied materials which already were around the entrance. We agreed on a simple but sturdy rail .The worker was very friendly and worked independently. He did professional work and completed the job in a reasonable period of time.Overall I was very impressed with the job.
Description of Work: Dan came up with a hand rail design to fit the steps leading up to our front door. He needed to work with and around granite, brick tiles and rail ties in order to make the best use of the space . We discussed design options and he was able to guide me in picking the most cost effective and pleasing design. He was reliable and most pleasant .

The handyman came and did the work we requested. It turned out that we didn't have full 2 hours of work for him to do, so we didn't get the full value as we had hoped. One work item we wanted done could not be performed b/c it was on a gutter too high for the handyman to reach. It was above the height for which they were insured. We didn't know there was such a height limitation, so it was a lesson learned for us.
Description of Work: This was a Big Deal - my price may be off, since I purchased it a while ago. They hung up some IKEA shelves on the walls that we had assembled ahead of time, and performed some minor work throughout the house.

never showed up; couldn't reach company; couldn't reach workman. See info described above.
Description of Work: Workman never showed up to set up the treadmill. The admin, Leila, for this small company is unorganized. When workman didn't show up I tried the cell phone number she gave to me for him--was incorrect. I tried the main number of the company and left voice message at 2pm but nobody returned my call. Was told that another workman was supposed to have showed up since original guy not available; was fired last week. They story goes on and on. I will admit, that the owner, Dan, called me to apologize and immediately offered to refund me. Mistakes happen, appointments are forgotten, but their admin, I felt simply gave me excuses. They need to follow-up on their phone calls from clients, they need to confirm that work was completed-not a no show!
