Please call the office directly at 508-376-5545 for any service related calls or appointments, as the service dept. does not have access to Angie's List.** We understand that no other single system in your home plays a larger role in your comfort or how much your utility bill will be than your heating system. That's why we specialize in comfortable, cost effective heating solutions, including furnaces, boilers, hybrid systems, geothermal systems and heat pumps. We also provide annual maintenance contracts and assess your heating system to evaluate its energy efficiency. We can help you maintain and repair the system you have, or replace it completely. As factory trained technicians, we can provide routine periodic inspections, licensed warranty and post warranty repairs, and immediate emergency response. Indoor air pollution can actually be worse for you that outdoor pollution. We can help supply and install air purifiers and humidifiers, and we're certified in duct system design, installation, and cleaning.
Overall the service experience was great. The repair guy was on time, professional, and with a sense of urgency wasted no time diagnosing the issue. He explained what was going on and what he was doing to troubleshoot the problem in plain english, which was much appreciated. The repair consisted of taping a hole in the pelham, which was leaking air causing the short cycling. The repair fixed the issue which was great. The repair guy did state if I had any further issues to call them back and they'd rivet a plate to secure the hole. It wasn't clear to me if this would be an additional charge or not. I discovered later the tape used was poor quality, and peeled easily. Therefore I have to reienforce the repair myself, which isn't a huge deal, but an extra step nonetheless.

Furnace out. Other company trying to rip us off condemning my furnace. Needed second opinion. Kermit and company fit me in at last minute because in area. Validated nothing wrong and got me running. going on vacation tomorrow. Major relief. One head up, KBSS repair folks don't sell. A dangerous incentive system if they do... keep and eye out for selling repairman!

Estimator came to house and was prompt, provided details of what work would need to be completed and how they would do it. He was professional and friendly. He provided a rough indiciation of the cost of the work and said he would provide a detailed quote the following week. I am still waiting for the detailed quote.

We've used K.B. Schultz for years and are usually very happy with their professionalism, service and capabilities. We call them regularly to winterize our HVAC yearly, and for any problems we have with our antiquated system. But... We called a couple years ago to find out what it would take to add central air to our second and third stories (we have it installed on the first floor, but not the entire house, for some reason). They came out and inspected our system (someone had already installed some parts years ago in the attic for the A/C, but hadn't been hooked up). While he was there, he got a call from one of the owners who was on vacation, and ended upon the phone for 30 minutes. Then, he left, saying that he'd get us a quote within a few days. Three weeks later, we called to find out where the quote was. We were told that it would be to us within a few days. Two weeks later, we called again. We were told that the quote would be there shortly. A week later (6 weeks after the initial inspection) we got a letter from them saying that everything would have to be replaced it and that it would be a lot of work. The tone of the letter was "We could help you, but..." We were really disappointed, because we've never had anything but GREAT service from KBS for over 15 years. We will continue to use them to service our furnace, and maybe even to replace it when it goes, but it seemed that there was no desire to do the new a/c installation, so, sadly, we're looking for another vendor for that.

EXCELLENT! Our system basically failed and KBS was very accomodating--the technicians came a week later (we had a planned vacation right after we called them). Brian Anderson provided us with options, let us know about the rebates available and a no interest loan through mass save, and even applied KBS' own coupon to the price without us asking. He answered many questions we had and sent in the rebate paperwork for us. He always seemed to be available! The work itself was done very professionally and efficiently and we have a free tune up to look forward to next year :). Thanks, everyone at KBS!!!!

The A/C quit on a house that was on the market and due for a showing in a few days. Called KBS and explained urgency, they said it should not be an issue to have it fixed in time. First visit technician diagnosed part (~$40) in compressor, got system up and running. Next day, day of showing, compressor stopped. Technician returned, decided motor had to be replaced, but did not have motor in stock. Knowing we wanted A/C running for showing, technician recommended similar, more expensive motor (~$400 vs ~$250) that would need a little 'modification' but should do the trick. Unfortunately, technician did not look like he would finish before showing, so was asked to come back later. Next day technician finished jury-rigging motor. A/C ran for a few hours, then quit as before. I called KBS to complain, technician blamed problem on being asked to leave in middle of work the prior visit. KBS explained that technician was inexperienced, sent out more experienced technician. He diagnosed the problem immediately as improperly wired part the the first technician replaced initially. Stated that the replacement motor was unnecessary, but should work as is. Provided very detailed explanation of wiring error. A/C was fixed and ran fine for rest of summer. KBS sent bill for all parts, but only charged for initial visit labor. I argued that the $400 motor was unnecessary expense, by second technician's own admission. KBS denied he ever stated that; after which he was unavailable to discuss further. I give KBS credit for agreeing to work on this system on short notice. I also give the first technician credit for trying to jury rig something instead of leaving me in the lurch. I also recognize they did not charge me for the obviously unnecessary visits the inexperienced technician made. My problem is that KBS is sent out a known inexperienced technician with no supervision, then expected me to pay for his mistakes.

Project required coordination with town inspection, electricians, construction and plumbers. All went pretty well although some extra calls needed to keep events on schedule. Generally a B++ performance, but given that this project is an addition to an almost 100 year old structure with fairly strict town codes, I am satisfied that we could have only done slightly better.

We called KBS because our upstairs heat was not working in the middle of January and blankets could only keep us "so warm". We were very pleased with the service call. Brian was very professional, explained what he was doing, and had what he needed to get our heater working again on the spot. It's an old furnace, but he did not spend all kinds of time trying to get us to upgrade. He just got us heat in the middle of January and let us know that it wasn't a permanent fix. The cost was very reasonable especially compared to a recent appliance service calls that charged $80 just to walk in the door and tell us there's nothing they can do. You always worry that you might get taken advantage of in an urgent situation (like no heat) because they have you over a barrell, but that was not the case with KBS at all. We were very impressed and plan on using them again. As a business owner myself, when I was originally looking for a service provider on Angie's List, the one thing that really impressed me was the service providers comments following up after the member reviews, both good and bad. No business is perfect, and once in a while something falls through the cracks (as in a recent review by someone else), but the president of the company took personal responsibility and tried to make it right. That's the best anyone can do, and really shows how important customer service is to a company. Our experience however, with KBS was excellent and I would highly recommend them! (I didn't intend to wait so long to write a review, but didn't realize until I just came back on AL that I never submitted one.)

Chip Schulz came out to give us an estimate to replace our broken furnace and also possibly our AC unit. He spent over an hour at our house and provided a lot of helpful information. I was really impressed with him and planned to hire his company if he came back with a reasonable estimate. He knew that our furnace was not working at all and that we wanted to replace it soon before the weather gets colder. We waited one week for the estimate and when we still hadn't heard back from him, my husband left him a voicemail and also sent an email asking if he could get us the estimate soon. He called back and left a message saying he was very busy but that he thought he could get it out to us that night. It has been 10 days since then and we have heard absolutely nothing from him. I just can't understand why he didn't get us the estimate when we even called back asking for it and after he had spent so much time at our house talking to me about the details of replacing our system. We were very disappointed in this experience and regret that we wasted so much time waiting for him to get us his proposal when we could have been moving forward with another company.

I do not blame you at all for being upset about this, I would be as well, as a customer, and definately am as the team at KBS on the whole works very hard to make our customers happy every day. If I personally, or Brian Anderson can make this right for you, please call me personally, and it will be turned around and in your hands the same day, I will make sure it is. If there was a phone number listed, I would be on the phone to you already in this regard. Agaian, my sincerest apologies for this. I began working with Brian at KBS back in the middle of February of this year. At that time I had him come out and look at my existing systems in order to generate a simple quote to replace my existing oil furnace with a new oil fired unit along with a matched central air conditioning system. Brian got me the initial proposals within a week or so, much quicker than other vendors I was working with at the time. Over the next couple of weeks I was able to determine that I could get Natural Gas installed in my house for free if I connected it to a new gas heating unit. Once again, Brian was responsive in updating the existing proposals, getting me pricing for a new gas-fired forced hot air furnace instead of the oil fired unit. Then, in late April I decided to modify the system to address another heating zone in my home, as well as Domestic Hot Water. In order to do this I asked Brian to convert the existing quotes to include a new natural gas boiler, hydro air system, and indirect domestic hot water tank. Brian was again responsive in getting the quotes updated. At this time, Brian also made direct contact with the folks at Mass Save to address some concerns I had regarding the project and how much of it could be covered under the HEAT loan program. He got me the answers I needed and put me in touch with the appropriate people on the MassSave side to get my loan in process. Once the loan was approved and the gas service was installed KBS worked around my busy travel schedule to get the project done. The A/C and hydro air handler were installed during May and then the remainder of the installation was put on hold until August when I would be back in the country. During the installation I asked that they handle the piping and hook ups to the new gas range I purchased for my kitchen. The installation crew took care of everything without any issues. The only issue I ran into was during the removal of my old oil tank. The sub-contractor KBS used to complete the work left portions of the oil feed line cemented in place in my basement and didn't clean up after themselves. Upon finding these issues I e-mailed Brian and he came out to my house the next day with one of their technicians and they took care of the issue, leaving the area cleaner than it was when the work started. From the beginning my interactions with KBS, and Brian specifically, were pleasant and professional. I was able to communicate with them via email, which I prefer, and still get the same level of service I'd expect if I called. They were able to answer my questions and even went the extra mile on several items such as the MassSave contacts I noted above. Brian also made sure the new internet-connected NEST thermostat I purchased for the system would be compatible, going so far as to call the company and go through the system configuration with them to make sure everything was going to work during the installation. Anytime you spend near $20k (over $20k if you figure the total cost before utility company rebates) on a project it's a little stressful. There are so many horror stories out there about contractors walking away from jobs, work being done halfway, etc. I'm extremely pleased to say none of that happened on this project. Overall the project went very well and I'd highly recommend KBS to anyone with an upcoming HVAC project.
Description of Work: I hired KBS to upgrade my HVAC and Domestic Hot Water systems as part of a conversion from oil to Natural Gas. The project included: - Removal of my existing oil tank and forced hot air furnace - Removal of my existing electric hot water heater - All inside plumbing for the new Natural Gas connection - Installation of a high efficiency Burnham Alpine gas boiler - Installation of a high efficiency Trane Hyperion hydro-air air handler - Installation of a Trane central air conditioning condenser - Installation of a HTP SuperStor Ultra indirect hot water tank - Minor modifications to my existing forced air duct system - Installation of a new Natural Gas range in my kitchen

Based on the reviews I saw on Angies List, I called this company to address a leaking air-conditioning unit. The person I spoke to was very helpful and set up an appointment time. On the day of the appointment, I got a call from the Tech saying that he was running late due to another appointment ahead of mine. I appreciate that he called me to let me know about this. This saved me from hanging around the house waiting for the tech to show up. I decided to choose another company that was closer to my home, but kudos to KBS for being professional and calling me about the schedule change.

From the initial appointment to evaluate the current system, through submission of the quote, and finally the installation, everything was handled professionally, on time, and as promised. I obtained several quotes for the replacement system, and although the quote from the Schulz company was higher than others, their quote was more completely detailed, and they were planning to use a vendor that I knew had a good record of performance. I didn't have any concerns that there might be some 'surprises' during the installation process. Brian Anderson, who coordinated the sale and installation, was very committed to the project and made himself available to answer all of my additional questions, and he was also around during the entire installation to insure that things went smoothly, which they did. Since the new system was installed while the weather was still relatively cool, I didn't have a need to turn on the A/C until Memorial Day weekend. I experienced a problem that weekend where the unit shut itself off, but a call and subsequent service visit showed that the problem was due to the original system's drainage design, that the Schulz company hadn't uncovered during their installation. The problem was promptly fixed, and the new system is working fine now. Since I was able to get someone out prompty and the issue was resolved quickly, I don't consider this to be a negative reflection on Kermit B. Schulz & Sons. Inc. Actually, everyone I have dealt with from their company has been great.

Brian Anderson was the guy who moderated the service and was always responsive and helpful with the installation guys coming when they said they would, punctual, professional and pleasant. We had oil tanks removed, and this required a separate licensed specialist to do this, and there was a little spillage, but Kermit Schulz did respond adequately as much as they could. All in all it wasa good experience, better than expected, given how one comes to expect poor performance from so many. We would definitely use these guys again.

The only down side to our experience was the salesman who handled all the paper work including the rebates. He was a really nice guy but was still "learning the ropes" of being in a new company with different systems and modes of operation. He made A fairly significant error on his estimate. He forgot to include the price of the split mini ductless heat pump and it was caught by the Mass Save energy people who were handling the heatloan paperwork. It was a non-trivial few thousands of dollars error. I will also say that he worked in less than ideal circumstances by generator power for over a week when their office lost power during Tropical Storm Irene. He always responded quickly to any questions and felt quite badly about his error. Aside from that, Brian was very helpful overall and he informed us better than any of the other companies we had in to do estimates about our options to solve some structural issues existing with our 100 year old home and the vagaries of revamping a poorly done system that was put in place of the coal system some 25 years ago.He came up with a creative solution and did a thorough job in his calculations. I will also say that he worked in less than ideal circumstances by generator power for over a week when their office lost power during Tropical Storm Irene. He always responded quickly to any questions. He did an excellent job at following up and trying to answer my questions. He was not quite as well informed about the changes of the rebates, as our installation happened during a time of shift in the administration of the rebates, so it was less streamlined on my end than I felt appropriate as a customer. But overall, I felt this company to be VERY GOOD to work with and responsive and I would say the few hiccups we had were due to human error and will be ironed out for future customers. Every contractor I have worked with in the past two years has made errors and by far, this company was the most responsive to try to resolve and communicate quickly. The installers were EXCELLENT in every respect. Nice crew, on time, clean, efficient, professional all the way.....if I could give them higher than an A rating I would ! The staff in the front office were also very pleasant. We love our new system and would recommend Schulz Company for its overall quality and suspect our few criticisms do not reflect a consistent pattern but were an exception rather than the norm for customers.

Our boiler was on the fritz. We had a guy come to clean it and he said that it would need to be repaired or replaced. As is practice I contacted three firms to give an estimate so we could decide who to pick. The first guy came, went back to his office, and within a day or so provided an estimate. There was no charge of course. The second that came was this Kermit Schultz company. I told them I wanted an estimate to repair or replace. The guy they sent left a bill for $69 which I didn't understand which referenced cleaning etc. The person at the office left me a message saying something to the effect that we may want to replace boiler even though its not that old (14 years) it needed to be replaced probably and that because we already had gas in the house might want to switch over. I called back - had to leave a message - and said yes I wanted an estimate how much to either fix or replace that is the reason I called in the first place and would be interested in gas and wasn't sure why the guy left a bill as we didn't need cleaning only wanted estimate. Then got another message saying the bill was for "diagnostic" (not mentioned in the paper that was left) and to call him to schedule at time when he could come out for an estimate then went on to say how old our boiler was. Then the very next day I get a typed invoice referencing diagnostic for $69. Needless to say did not call these fellows back. I will pay the bill just to be done with this. We ended up hiring the next company that came - a new boiler installed and switched from oil to gas and he came very professional - sent detailed estimate - obviously for no cost. And as I said we hired the third guy to do the job. So no I would not recommend this firm.

Response from Kermit B Schulz & Sons Inc
You should speak with Betty on this, as it seems to be a misunderstanding from what I can see in the system. The work order says "boiler leaking", wants estimate to repair, for which we send a service technician out on, and yeas, we do charge a diagnostic fee for that, which covers the time and gas etc. If the original call was for an estimate only, we would not have sent out a service technician, we would have had one of our two residential sales reps (Brian or Chip) call directly to set up a time to come over and look at the system and give you a quote as requested, and those are always free here as well. We have never charged anyone for an estimate since the day the doors opened in 1946, and we always give customers with a new system a free service agreement as well once the job has been completed, one of the many reasons we were awarded the Angie's List 2010 Super Service Award. I will be more than happy to issue a credit for you as apparently servicing the boiler was not what you were looking for as the work order states, and this will be taken care of today, your balance with us will be $0.00 as of 11.19.2011 I am very happy you got things taken care, a leaking boiler is never good heading into the heating season. Sincerely, Bob Schulz, President

Residential Project Manager Brian Anderson came to our house to give us the estimate. He was very helpful and listened carefully to our needs and our experience with our previous system. He was then very communicative during a long discussion with us about the design of the system, the choice of components, and the scheduling of the installation. The installation was delayed one week by bad weather and a power failure, but after that the installers showed up on schedule, worked hard, and completed the installation when they said they would. They coordinated well with us, for example about the need to shut off the main house water supply. Anderson was in touch with us before, during, and after the installation. The installation looks very good and the system works beautifully.
Description of Work: We had a Lennox complete heat system which provided domestic hot water and home heating via a hydronic air handler. This unit had essentially failed and was barely operable. Schulz company designed and installed a replacement system consisting of a Lochinvar Knight WHN155 155 Btu/hr boiler and Lochinvar squire indirect water heater.

The Schulz Company was great. The project manager and team were very responsive, professional and friendly. Everything ran smoothly and they were done in a day. They were on the higher end of the price spectrum but certainly in range of the other 4 vendors that quoted me.

Wonderful- they showed up quickly and when promised, diagnosed the problem as a bad capacitor, installed a new one, checked the refrigerant pressure, found it to be slightly low, and added a small amount to the system. It's been working perfectly ever since, and this has been a very hot summer.
Description of Work: They made an emergency repair call for my central air system during a heat wave.

It turned out great. They are quick, they came out pretty quickly, they did the job quickly, and they seemed to be priced fairly.
Description of Work: Our furnace stopped working so Kermit B Schulz & Sons checked it out. It turned out that there was a clog in one of the air intakes so they cleaned it out.
