It appears that (Remove member name), in NY, attempted to contact us after we had moved to Boston. I am sorry we were unable to assist him.

He and his crew took off all the brick and re-cemented the chimney and then put on a brick veneer. After two years, the bricks began to fall off the chimney, which posed a great danger to my family and our neighbors.. He returned and replaced them. Two years later, they began falling down at an alarming rate. I contacted him again and he promised to return and correct the problem. "We stand by our work" was a quote from his email. He never returned the rest of my calls and emails and I had to have someone repair the mess he had left me with, which cost about $5000. I have since learned that he has left the area and moved to somewhere around Boston. Beware, he is not at all a reputable or honorable business man.
Description of Work: I hired Mr. Hamilton to replace front steps on my home. In the process of doing so, he noticed that there was a problem with my chimney. He offered to repair the chimney and made me feel as if it was in danger of collapsing. I had just lost my husband and was caring for two small children, so I foolishly trusted Mr. Hamilton and had him complete the work.

This is an unfortunate project, but one in which the circumstances require clarification. I wish such personal, disparaging comments were made but I guess this website serves as a vehicle for such attacks. [member name removed] chimney was disintegrating. It was constructed of common, porous salvaged brick. In the late 60's and early 70's the NYS capitol complex in Albany was built. Hundreds of 18th and 19th century buildings were razed in the process. Bricks were salvage and sold to builders throughout the capital region in the years following. We have worked for dozens of homeowners whose homes, built in that period, have brick chimneys and veneers that are spalling and coming apart. [member name removed] home and chimney were also victim to this sub-standard brick. She did not want to rebuild the chimney (a $25,000+ prospect) but wanted to do something to address the issue. I suggested patching the stack and then applying an Owens-Corning thin brick veneer system to the entire stack for $3,000. If you don't know anything about masonry/construction, I submit to you that that was a token amount for a band aid approach. There was no warranty other than the standard one year required by NYS law. The end result looked great but, a few years later, some chunks of the chimney fell off. The veneer band aid had failed. I returned and made additional repairs at no cost in an effort to maintain positive customer relations. A few years later, [member name removed] reported that, again, pieces had fallen off. Again, I said that I would make the repairs, but was unsure when. At a later date, I drove by and the entire chimney had been demolished and a brand new one built in its place. Frankly, I was irritated that I was not offered the opportunity to submit a bid for the work. As a contractor I have learned that you cannot make everyone happy, but we sure try to. We've probably served 4,000+ clients over the past ten years. I think our success rate is pretty darn good. And I can provide you with a slew of references that say so. Just check out my LinkedIn profile; there are several there.

After waiting a week for the quote, I emailed him for the estimate and got no response. I then called a week later and spoke with a person in the office who said I would receive a quote by email shortly. I never received another word. The experience set me back at least two weeks on my project. This outfit was found to unreliable.
Description of Work: After inspecting the extensive work I needed, the owner told me I would receive a quote withing three days.

I met with [member name removed] and looked at the project she wanted a quote for. At the conclusion of our meeting, I told her that we were probably not interested but that, if we were, she would receive a quote soon. [member name removed] indicates that she "spoke with a person in the office who said I would receive a quote by email shortly." We do not have an office. We have an answering service that forwards messages to me. That do not advise callers of the status of their estimate or anything else ever. Because we are in high demand for the historic preservation work we do, we are not able to take on every job I see. Some people take it very personally when we pass on their project.

They were fitting my relatively small repair job into a busy schedule of bigger jobs, so it took several contacts over a period of about a month to actually get the job set up. That was the only negative part of the experience. They were able to come 2 days earlier than the date we had actually set, and completely the work quickly. While they were here they did a full inspection of the roof and replaced a bunch of slates in other parts of the roof that had slipped or broken. These guys know their slate!
Description of Work: Slate roof repair. Repaired leaky flashing around plumbing vent, and replaced several loose or failed slates.

Although expensive, we hired Olde Mohawk to replace our roof because of our housing inspector's recommendation. Ward Hamilton's crew seemed to do a good job on the roof, but after they left and our check was cashed, water came into our house--for the first time since we've owned it--at the first rain fall. It took close to 2 weeks--and a second rain--before we were able to diagnose the problem (materials that got caught in our roof drain when Olde Mohawk was doing the work). The water that came into the house damaged drywall ceilings in two bathrooms and ruined a light fixture. Since the drain clog was removed, Olde Mohawk representatives have not answered our calls or responded to our emails. And only after we took them to the Better Business Bureau did they offer $200 in reimbursement--far less than we've already spent. Finally, several contractors who've examined our roof drain since the work was completed have informed us that the pvc pipe Olde Mohawk inserted in the drain (in an attempt to address the problem before we knew the cause) appears to be improper.
Description of Work: Olde Mohawk replaced the old roof on a 19th century townhouse with a new rubber roof.

The drain in question had been faulty for years, as evidenced by the significant wood rot in the vicinity of the opening on the roof, my specific reference to the area in question in our proposal, and the extensive, subsequent repairs made by my firm. Further, she identified areas of plaster/sheetrock damage inside the home that were a result of the faulty drain prior to commencement of work. During the first rainfall after work was completed, they contacted 'Olde Mohawk' about water intrusion in their home. At that time, most of the company's staff was in Providence, Rhode Island, on another project. In less than four hours, Sixto Martinez was on site and working to rectify the problem. She stated to Martinez that there was an area approximately 16" by 16" that had experienced water damage. Mr. Martinez was able to determine that the cause of the problem was a clogged or "slow moving" internal drain. From Providence, Olde Mohawk foreman Carl Rivera was able to hire another company to clear the obstruction. She refused this individual access to the basement, limiting his ability to address the problem. The responding plumber/ sub-contracted by this other company was unable to clear to the obstruction and stated to complainants that (1) it was not possible to clear the drain, and (2) the PVC drain pipe installed by "Olde Mohawk" was not appropriate. Mr. Rivera, distressed by the other company's failure and false statement regarding the PVC, dispatched a THIRD individual to 81 South Lake to investigate and work toward resolution of the problem. It was discovered that a variety of work, adjustments and alterations had been made to the drain pipe over many years. Although it could not be readily discerned that "Olde Mohawk" work was faulty or the cause of the problem, the decision was made to continue to pay for and actively work toward a resolution of the problem. The next day, the members hired a plumber to clear the obstruction, which he did, successfully. They then called Mr. Rivera and "ambushed" him with the bill. Mr. Rivera did not "grudgingly" pay the bill-he was confused and unclear of what was going on. At my direction, he acquiesced and paid the bill. Their plan had worked. The next day, they acknowledged that the roof did not leak, and that the drain was functioning in a satisfactory manner. At a later date, they informed me that they were concerned that the pipe was PVC (as the incompetent (other company's plumber) had misinformed them it should not be) and about the damaged interior sheetrock. The issue with the PVC is simple: It is within the boundaries dictated by code and acceptable for internal drain use. We will not change it. The sheetrock damage is negligible given the existence of prior damage and possibility that her refusal to grant a responding contractor full access to investigate and address the issues caused further damage. It is our position that "Olde Mohawk" made every effort to resolve the situation in an expeditious manner and at no small expense. We do not deny the possibility that our work exacerbated and worsened an already poor drain situation. But we are not at peace with the customers' resistance to our initial, timely response and later guerilla tactics to serve their own ends. We will consider splitting the cost of sheetrock repairs with the customer up to a maximum $200 out of our pocket. There will be no response to any counter-offer. Acceptance of this offer will require a full retraction of the complaint at hand and a written statement that no further action will follow. If not accepted, complainant can file an insurance claim which-be assured-we will fight vigorously. Ward Hamilton-Owner

They were really nice. We have had a lot of heavy rain in that area and there is no leak. I asked them to fix the rubber roof and I never heard back from them.

It took several attempts to get in touch with the owner, Ward Hamilton. He was very nice. He said he was too busy to do the work but offered to send one of his crew members that does work on the weekends. They showed up the following weekend and did the work. My only complaint is that they left a lot of slate shards on the roof that covers a first story porch.
Description of Work: I have a 70 year old slate roof that needed some slates replaced after several winters of neglect. The company sent a crew of 4 or 5 people on a Saturday morning. They worked most of the day and replaced about 35 slates. The foreman seemed very knowledgeable. There have been several major rainstorms since the work was done and I have had no leaks. (Before the work, I had several leaks)
