Bruno (one of the 2 owners) and his 3 workers arrived when he said they would. When the existing steps were removed, they discovered a large hole and rotted wood in the foundation where the back of the steps would come flush with the front of the porch of the house. They cleaned it out and put in a number of concrete blocks and sealed them. Bruno charged a fair price for the additional unexpected work. He stayed until he felt he could leave the men on their own and returned toward the end of the next day. The 3 men were good workers, genial, and did the work in 2 extremely hot and humid days. The results are solid and beautiful. I would highly recommend them.

After having several failed attempts at contacting masons, I came across MasonWorks on Angie's List. I went to their site and read some reviews and felt it was worth sending an email. I received a response by email by the next day. We jumped right in to the description of what I was looking to have done. Jeff came out to the house to look at everything (on his schedule and without requiring someone around the house) and then prepared a quote. The quote was very detailed and included 3D drawings explaining what work would be performed. Not having had any masonry work done before, I had a lot of questions. He answered all of them and made sure I understood what was going on. He was very up front about the costs and what would be done compared to what he observed when he surveyed the existing porch. Once we agreed on everything, he prepared a contract and we signed it and work began. Given the type of project this was, my city requires a building permit and inspection before starting the new base. MasonWorks took care of all of this. I never had to contact the city or go to city hall or anything like that. Jeff did explain that since every city is different with regards to permit process and fees, he would not know the exact amount until it was filed. He gave me a rough estimate, which was pretty close to the actual. The permit process cost was the only cost added on top of what was signed in the contract. Demo and rebuild took a week. I was extremely impressed with the speed of everything and the end result. Once the porch was finished, MasonWorks ordered new columns and came about a week or so later to install them. That took an afternoon. All in all, I am very happy with the results and the entire process. Jeff is a very honest contractor and stands behind his work. His work crews are very professional and do great work. They also clean up every day! If you are in metro Boston and have a brick project, check out MasonWorks. Their work is solid.

The service was great, easy to schedule, Bruno showed up on time to provide the quote, and Junior came by after the work was complete to make sure it was done properly. The only knock I have is that the work was delayed a couple of weeks because they originally showed up with the wrong-sized door and had to order a new one, but otherwise, MasonWorks was great.

This was my best experience with a contractor. I have a tough schedule, and Jeff Souza found a time that worked for me to come out and provide an estimate for the patio. His crew was actually able to start earlier than planned and they stayed all day until the work was finished. We had some questioned about the way the patio was leveled to allow water to runoff, and his foreman came back in person to explain the measurements. We love this patio and use it almost every night. I would DEFINITELY use MasonWorks again and would recommend them to a friend.

They worked hard and finished the job pretty quickly - 3 weeks I believe - for a lot of work! They had to demolish a lot before beginning to build! The workers were courteous and skilled. The work seemed almost of an industrial grade - looks beautiful and built to last! The owner Jeff and project manager Bruno were accommodating - I changed the size of the back patio a bit in the midst of the job - and the brickwork on the patio and front walkway is beautiful - herringbone pattern. The driveway walls look beautiful - New England Round/Semi-Round Fieldstone - real skill in putting the "mosaic" together. The workers had to pull out a large Ewe bush that had been there for about 80 years in order to widen the driveway - they accomplished it in the blink of an eye! We went with the composite material for the front stairs and it looks fantastic. Part of the reason I hired Masonworks is because they do carpentry through their own company - New England Construction Group - so I didn't have to hire two contractors. The two carpenters were skilled and courteous as well. I highly recommend Masonworks and would use them again.
Description of Work: Masonworks was hired because we needed new a asphalt driveway, completely new stone retaining walls on the driveway, new dry-well in driveway, repair to old damage to garage floor, a new front walk-way, new front stairs, and a walkway and patio installed in the back yard.

I had high hopes for MasonWorks, because of their many reviews on Angie's List. MasonWorks has good reviews, Bruno was responsive to my request for a quote, and his price wasn't cheap but I think "you get what you pay for." While Bruno was good about coming to give an estimate, we had problems once the service started. The request was to completely clear the driveway and front sidewalk, and to apply de-icer on the sidewalk. After visiting our property, and it's limited places to put snow, Bruno suggested we go with snow-shoveling versus plowing; I took his suggestion because it was less likely to damage our fence, better suited to our property layout, but it was more expensive. Again, "you get what you pay for." Of course, there is the caveat that the Winter 2014/2015 was horrendous, but some of the problems were independent of the massive amount of snow we received. 1) On their first visit, the guys never showed up until I called and texted 3 times. This storm was, at most, 6", and they showed up in the afternoon after the snow stopped early in the morning. By the time MasonWorks came, my neighbor and I had dug out 50% of the property. Not a huge deal. 2) The first massive storm was 28" in February. The guys came quickly after the storm has subsided, which was much appreciated. However, they tried to dig a path from the street to the car in the back of the driveway. It was obvious that a car couldn't fit through the path. Our neighbors told them this wasn't acceptable, and they then cleared the entire driveway. They were here for 3 hours, and I even tipped the guys after they were done, because they did a good job. The bill for the job was massive, but I thought they'd done a good job. 3) Another massive storm hit, and I got 2 separate emails from my neighbors saying they saw the guys shoveling snow from our sidewalk onto their cars that were parked on the curb, and into the areas around the car that my neighbors had dug out. That's not cool. I sent a note to Jeff via email, and got a quick and terse response saying that his team didn't re-bury the cars. 4) Another storm hit - I got a 3rd email from my neighbors saying that they had again seen the team shoveling snow from the sidewalk into the space they had dug out around their car. My neighbors aren't fussy people, and this was our third note, so I knew something was up. I sent another note to Jeff, and got another terse response saying that it wasn't true, and then offering to remove the snow for a very high price. I understand that there was a LOT of snow, and few obvious places to put it, but we were paying a LOT to MasonWorks, and expected them to pile it high, ask for additional ideas on where to put snow, etc. But, no luck, just jerky responses. 5) Lastly, I got an invoice for the first storm (where they were late to show, and we did 50% of the property.) The invoice was for the full amount, so I challenged it and said I'd pay for half, since we'd shoveled half the property. I got no response, sent a follow up with a check for 50% of the invoice, and then never any response. On the whole - not a terrible experience. When a check I sent got lost in the mail, Jeff let me know it never showed and was patient in waiting for it to be delivered - I eventually sent another check. However, considering the elevated price, I would expect more-professional communications and better attention to detail. Burying neighbors' cars isn't cool, then denying it when I asked (nicely) wasn't cool.

I wish we could come to par with the expectancies of the client. Unfortunately it wasn't possible at all. We had to be on their door steps as soon as they wanted and this is completely unreasonable. I hope they will find another company that can deliver waht they expect which I find completely impossilbe. No where on our contracts it says we will be there whenever the client wants. With the winter we had we all had to be patient and wait. Not the case here. With no place to put the snow and with the client not wanting to pay to remove and dispose of the snow we got the blame... Fortunately this is one case in hundreds of positive responses we had

The job went very smoothly. At first, I was skittish on the price (although, having received other quotes, it was in the ballpark). The crew worked nonstop and were courteous and professional. This is backbreaking work. The stone wall looks amazing. We have had other contractors here to do other exterior work on our home and they have commented on the wall and have even asked for Jeff Souza's card. The paving job was exactly as we wanted. The work was completed in one week, as promised by Masonworks. We would highly recommend Masonworks.

Masonworks completed a project that included a new circular driveway with pavers and asphalt, paver walkway, patio and trash barrel pad, and stone retaining wall. They did an exceptional job in a very short timeframe, approximately 1 week from start to finish which I found amazingly fast. The project was accurately scoped and estimated plus the crew was responsive and open to onsite final design input for the layout since the circular driveway was a new layout from the previous driveway. I would highly recommend Masonworks for any stone work, masonry, paver, and/or asphalt work you are planning. They are a true pleasure to work with.

Masonworks did a fantastic job on our front steps and walkway! They installed new granite steps and a blue stone walkway. From the first contact through the end of the job, each and every person we dealt with was professional and friendly. We thought the job would take at least a week and it only took 3 days. The workers were there promptly in the morning and worked until dark. They even started work at 6:30AM on a Saturday to finish the job! We couldn't be more pleased with the outcome and would absolutely recommend Masonworks!

Fabulous and super nice and reliable crew! As we all know, this was quite the winter and we were so fortunate to have Jeff, Bruno and their crew on the job. They were reliable and thorough, and whenever we saw them, they seemed to have managed to keep their spirits positive and cheerful despite the inordinate amount of snow that kept coming! They kept in communication and it was such a relief to know that we could rely on them to manage the job. They did an outstanding job in a challenging area; we live in a dense urban neighborhood without a lot of space to put snow (no large yards or green spaces). They somehow figured out how to pile snow and carve out enough space to enable us to get in/out of the garage and the walkways were ice-free and spacious. Regarding the cost: while I would not say that this was an inexpensive service, the reason I provided a top grade is because I felt that they earned their money and it was worth it for us to pay to ensure reliability and high quality work. Although as it turns out, we were home for most of the storms this year, but sometimes we are away when storms arrive and we would want to know that we could rely on someone to take care of things in that case. I would absolutely be able to count on them. This was our first winter using this service but we would use them again because of the reliability, quality, and also because we liked the guys on the crew as well! Overall, top notch and a big thanks for a great job!

Masonworks has been professional, prompt and has the best prices of any quotes we have received in the past. The workers are diligent and respectful when they are on site. Bruno Camara and Jeff Souza have been our main contacts and have always been courteous and prompt at responding to requests either via email or phone if needed. We recently had them move some snow from our driveway into our yard so that it would free up more parking spaces for our cars and they did an excellent job. We have been very satisfied with their services and are happy that we have secured a contract with them going forward because the demand has been very high this year due to the record amounts of snowfall. It's not easy to find a company like Masonworks who is so responsive and professional at such a good price. If you want to get on their snow removal list, I suggest you contact them early in the season to get on their schedule!!
Description of Work: We have a flat rate snow removal contract with Masonworks for this current 2014-2015 winter season and will continue to receive their excellent services for the next 2 seasons. We live in a 4 unit condo complex and have had other snow removal companies in the past.

I got three estimates. MasonWorks was the middle estimate, but Jeff Souza was very customer service oriented and I appreciated the confidence he had in his company/workers. Unfortunately, that estimate was the last time I saw Jeff. Bruno was the project manager, and 3-4 workers did the job. They worked hard, and they were mindful of my desire for the patio to slope slightly away from the house -- for water runoff purposes. One problem arose when, instead of using fresh loom as agreed upon to improve the grading of the backyard, the workers used the old dirt they dug up in building/expanding the patio. That dirt was filled with rocks and weeds. When I complained to Bruno, they dug some of it out but not nearly enough. They did add fresh loom. A day or so later, when I went to check on the finished job, I was poking around and realized that they never removed the entire old concrete pathway as agreed to. Instead, the workers just covered half of it with the old dirt/new loom. I was pretty unhappy, since the purpose of removing the concrete was to improve water management (and because they were supposed to remove it all). Again, I had to call Bruno to complain. In the end, they further dug up the old dirt, demolished and removed the old pathway, and added more fresh loom. The quality of the work on the patio was very good, and the new steps (with limestone tops) was also solid. It just seems the workers took a few shortcuts. A project manager should have popped by at least once a day to check on things to ensure that the job was being done as agreed upon. If they fix that moving forward, I would use them again.
Description of Work: Removed old concrete patio, small concrete pathway and three-step cement stairway that led down into basement. Rebuilt patio using pavers and jumbo cobblestones, rebuild stairway, and feathered in loom to improve grading of backyard.

It is the first time I hear any complaints from this client. The job was done and I never heard anything back from him. If anything went wrong, which I doubt since I did not hear about it, I should have been contacted and made aware of it and things would have been amended, if done wrong, right away.

We'd been planning this project for about 2 years. We'd contacted Masonworks back in 2012 to get a quote, as well as other mason and landscaping providers. What impressed me about Masonworks was that they really understood how to plan the project, and how we wanted to use the space. All-in-all, we interviewed 4 different providers and the pricing was relatively similar across all, but Jeff Souza really took the extra time to work with us and figure out the best use of our yard and where to place the patio. Finally in the fall of 2014, we were ready to start. Jeff stayed in contact during the 2 years since our initial meeting, and once we decided to move forward, he only had to update the estimate to reflect current materials pricing and the addition of a retaining wall before we got started. Jeff's crew showed up the day before Thanksgiving to begin excavating the yard by hand. It took 3 days total to finish the patio, from the initial excavation to the patio being finished. During that process, we were home and available for any questions from the crew, and we could also watch them at work. We were continually impressed by how hard the team worked, barely taking breaks and really keeping the project moving. We had an overall plan that the crew was working from, and they were constantly referencing to make sure what they were executing was according to the plan. At critical points during the process, they would stop and ask us to review a certain height for the wall, or the shape of the edging stones to ensure it was what we wanted. They were very accommodating to minor changes made, and were always saying "it's your house, you should be happy." Sebastian, who led the project, is a true artist. He's meticulous with his work, and it's evident watching him work that he takes a lot of pride in what he does, and wants it to be perfect. The finished product is exactly what I wanted, it looks fantastic and we can't wait until spring when we can use it! One of the other benefits to using Masonworks is how they left our property once the project was finished. During the project, the yard was a real mess, with piles of dirt and grass, stones and crushed gravel being carted in, tools everywhere. As the project drew to a close, the crew made sure our yard was as clean as it could be--even staying after nightfall to sweep the dust and dirt off the driveway where the stone material had been stored. I highly recommend Masonworks and am planning to use them again for future projects.

I had these stairs replaced a few years ago, but the job did not last. Jeff came by and immediately noticed the cracks in the sides of the foundation steps. He said the permanent solution was to put sonotubes in the ground and then build a new foundation and steps. All the work was done in a timely and professional manner, and for the quoted price, though permitting fee were extra, as was noted in the contract. Jeff and/or his employees were responsive to my phone calls and questions.

In late September, I called six snow removal vendors for quotes for the upcoming winter. Bruno Camaro, from Masonworks, was the first to call back, check out the property, and provide quotes. I signed a contract and emailed it back in October. In early December, my tenant calls and complains that snow was not removed after a Thanksgiving storm. I followed up with Masonworks about this. Jeff Souza responds, noting that there was minimal snow accumulation and that it was not in my best interest for them to remove less than an inch of snow, which I appreciated, as I currently live in a different state. He also communicates that there is no contract on record. I resend the agreement I previously signed (that Jeff was CC'ed on), but Jeff insists on a hard copy and says he cannot guarantee snow removal availability. This is an unwelcome surprise to me, as we have a binding contract signed in October. Snow removal service is a necessity because my tenant has young children and is disabled (and therefore unable to remove snow himself). This was communicated as a specific concern upon signing the contract. The need for snow removal became painfully clear when my tenant fell down the stairs on a half inch of snow. What would have happened if we had more snow and Masonworks still didn't have their affairs in order? They would not have removed the snow -- even though we have a signed, binding contract -- and my disabled tenant would have been left in a very bad situation with young children. There is a clear gap between communication and execution at Masonworks that could have had a dangerous outcome. I'm glad I followed up with Masonworks before more significant snowfall to find out that they would not be removing snow from my property, completely in disregard for our binding contract. In light of this oversight, I have re-evaluated my relationship with Masonworks. I will be going to another vendor for my snow removal needs.

Response from MasonWorks LLC
There is no miscommunication at Masonworks. The client did not opt for the automatic list which is when we go out at any event. It was the client's choice to have us come 3" and above. In any case we never had enough snow fall to stop by and clean. She chose to terminate the binding agreement which we could enforce but since problems is the least of what I want I also chose to leave it alone. Good luck to the client on having someone who will be at her door steps to clean 1/2" of snow whenever it falls. It simply doesn't work like she expects.

They just stopped responding to email.
Description of Work: We were looking for a quote for snow removal. He emailed back and mentioned they only do entire seasons, not part of them, did not get back to me on cost for entire season.

Response from MasonWorks LLC
I responded to the emails sent and explained that we do not provide on call services which was what the client was looking for. Was asked to have a quote as an emergency and couldn't do it since it was a day prior to a potential snow storm. The client did not plan ahead and anticipated that I had the obligation to come up on the same day to provide a quote. All I can say is that I responded to the emails sent. Also, the lack of planing on anyone's part will never constitute an emergency on my part. We will respond to anyone within reasonable time. Best is to plan ahead

I did some research before picking MasonWorks to repair my stone wall with limestone caps because I know masonry work is pretty expensive. I chose MasonWorks for a number of reasons, including: a fair and competitive price, professional attitude, detailed description of the work that came with the quote, and an approach that was about addressing my needs not trying to push extra work that I didn't necessarily want. I was promised that the work would begin in 3 weeks, and they showed up on the promised date and finished the work in one day. Oftentimes you have to chase contractors down to show up or complete the work, but not MasonWorks; they did everything that they promised. In fact, I was only going to do half of my side wall to save on costs, but after seeing only half done I decided to get the rest of it completed. They were able to get the extra stone and complete the work the same day. Walls look good, and I no longer have to worry about them breaking up over the winter due to the extreme cold! I would hire MasonWorks again.
Description of Work: Put limestone caps on my front and side walls.

Jeff was extremely responsive and professional from the start, and this carried through the entire project's execution. He assessed the work and not only offered a very competitive price, but he was quite clear about the timeline and that he would oversee it. It took a while for his schedule to open up for this - I advise you to book any work like this well in advance -- we had this done during a very busy time of year. However, once we were contacted that the project would start, it began on time and the crew was great - very professional and obviously hard-working. They finished on time, it took no more than 3 or 4 days, with outstanding results. The yard was left neat and clean. I'd certainly consider hiring MasonWorks again, I really appreciated their skill and professionalism, it was a job well done.
