Every part of this transaction was a very high standard of service and execution, including the project planning, the estimate and contracting process. The job itself was done efficiently with a professional, pleasant, experienced and supervised work team. We are very pleased with the result.
Description of Work: Masonworks removed fence, removed old rotting retaining timbers, excavated for new retaining wall foundation, set new wall foundation and built new field stone wall on top of foundation, removed old asphalt parking area, repaved parking area adjacent to new wall, replaced fence.

MasonWorks was very responsive and got back to me soon after I put in an inquiry. Bruno arranged to meet me early in the morning and came right on time at 6:30am. He listened carefully to the projects we were looking to complete and shared some helpful perspective and ideas. He showed me several examples of their stone retaining wall work which is very nice. The quote came quickly after our meeting and was in-line with my expectations. We had a few additional questions after the quote and Bruno was always very responsive, friendly, and professional. In the end, we decided to hire another group to do the job because we had a very strong positive personal reference, but MasonWorks was a very close second. We are not doing the entire job at this point (just the rock wall), so I will definitely be calling on Bruno again when we look to do that patio and other work around our house. I was very happy with what I saw. I also wanted to say that MasonWorks did a project 2 houses away from me with stacked stone and the end product is very nice. They matched an existing rock wall very closely and did high quality work with appropriate drainage backfill, etc. The price was very competitive for the rock wall that I had quoted (I got several quotes in the stratosphere) and I trust MasonWorks to give a fair price for the nice work they do.
Description of Work: Install a mortared fieldstone retaining wall containing ~525 face feet including excavation, footings, and drainage, remove 3 large trees, Install a ~950sqft patio, demolish and replace small rear staircase.

We enjoyed working with Masonworks Landscaping very much! I wish that we had more masonry projects to give them! Right from the beginning, Jeff was incredibly responsive and made time for all of our questions. Once the permits were obtained, they started the job promptly and worked incredibly hard to finish our project in a very timely fashion. (Faster than expected.) They took the time to complete a final walkthrough with us and quickly responded to any questions or concerns. The walkways, stairs, and patio are absolutely beautiful, and we love them. Lastly, they helped us with some landscaping issues unrelated to their projects (moving the soil from patio excavation to other areas of the property). I would definitely recommend them to anyone!
Description of Work: removed front walkway and replaced with stone pavers, along with granite/field stone step up from the sidewalk applied fieldstone facade to front (cement) stairs laid down pavers for second, smaller walkway demolished/removed old wood deck in backyard and replaced with patio (including building new stairs from house to patio)

I couldn't be happier. Their price was unbeatable, their crew was incredibly skilled, professional, and downright nice. The quality of the work was top notch, and the driveway looks great. They even got it done faster than expected. (2 days instead of 3.) One standout moment was when one of the masons offered to carry my 4 year old son over the driveway (which couldn't be walked on at that point) so he could get to preschool. My wife said, and I quote, "these guys are by far the best workers that have done anything to our place, ever". Thanks guys!

The initial quoting process went well. I liked the fact that there were details on the quote about how the work would be done. Since I decided to go with the blocks instead of stone for the retaining wall after getting several quotes, and MasonWorks Landscapes did not do blocks/segmented wall (I found out later after the quoting), I went with another company to build the retaining wall. After the retaining wall was done, I reached out to the MasonWorks Landscapes about the remaining of the project (repointing the front porch concrete wall, rebuilding the walkway and front steps). Since I would like to reduce the length of the walkway by several feet, the owner (Jeff Souza) of MasonWorks Landscapes wanted to see the job again before he was willing to adjust the quote. We made an appointment to meet at 8:15am of 10/08/2015. I waited at home in the morning of 10/08/2015. It was already 8:30AM, but I had not heard door bell rang or received any phone call about possible late arrival. So I called Jeff' at 8:32am. No one answered the phone so I left a voice message to ask Jeff to call me back. I did not get any call back either. It was already 8:51am and I had to go to work. Before heading out for work, I emailed Jeff asking why he did not show up or return my phone call. This is the exact reply I got from him "I we will not do your job. You can have the same guy that built your wall do your walkway". So it appears that Jeff did come to my house and walked away without bothering to notify me after he saw the retaining wall. I think that was very unprofessional. Even though he probably had every right not to do the work, he should not let me wait since we had an appointment. This is the first contractor I have encountered so far who walked away only because he did not get the whole project. I guess he probably had no concern of turning down customers since he had high rating on Angie's List. Here I would like to ask MasonWorks Landscapes to put their hidden rule upfront in the quote to all their potential customers,i.e. you will not take the job if you do not get the whole project. And you do not do block/segmented retaining wall. This way, you will not waste your potential customers' time and your time too. I hope future customers be careful when dealing with this company to make sure they can do all what you want to do.

The client was shopping for unreasonsble prices and had no concern with the final quality. I gave him a price for a bundle work. He built most of the work with cheap labor and wanted me to sons minor walkway. I told him I wasn't interested on the left over. I believe we have the right to choose weather we want or not to do a job for someone. I'm really not interested on the kind of bargain the customer was forcing for.

After 100+ inches of snow in one month (Feb 2015), these guys did a great job keeping the sidewalks and steps clear. Snowbanks were 10' high but the sidewalks, decks and stairs were still safe for our tenants and pedestrians at the 3 properties in South Boston where they cleared snow. That was not an easy task and they did a great job.

Jeff Souza was a pleasure to work with in agreeing up front on project details and throughout project execution. The workmanship was excellent. The masons were pleasant, hard working, and very careful working in rather tight quarters. I am pleased with the results which came out just as I wanted and at the agreed price.
Description of Work: The work involved two separate tasks, replacing brick front steps and replacing cement block exterior basement stairs. The existing blue stone treads from the front steps were re-purposed as treads for the rear stairs. Granite was used for the front steps.

The whole project, despite its size and duration, went extremely well, and exactly the way we had hoped for. Two years ago we hired Jeff Souza and his MasonWorks team for a project to remove part of the driveway in the back of the house and build a patio next to the deck. We were very happy with the outcome of that project. This past winter did a lot of damage to the house, and we needed advice that we could trust. We called Jeff to come by and give us an assessment on the scope and costs of repair. Jeff came on time and explained the work we had in mind. He even came for a second time when my wife had her questions. Once we reviewed his proposal and signed the contract, his foreman contacted us to schedule the actual work. The work crew came on time and they were very polite to us. The project was divided into two parts with first part in August/September and second part in October/November. During the first part we were on vacation, and when we returned home, we were pleasantly surprised that the work site was tidy and clean. For the second part, Foreman Bruno and his crew had to deal with some difficult situations, but they behaved very professionally and informed me the issues immediately. My apologies to the workers who got yelled at by a rude third party. Once again, I appreciate Jeff Souza, Forman Bruno and Foreman Junior and their work crew for their excellent work ethics and professionalism.
Description of Work: After the work crew removed the old structures, they built a new front yard retaining wall, new front steps and walkway, installed new front porch columns and paved a new driveway.

This is not a review of a single incident, but of about three years of having been serviced by these guys. They do a pretty good job. They are very good on the details: get the walk in front cleared, do the steps and use salt where necessary, etc. The only issue I have is that when we have a bunch of storms in a row (as we had this past winter), sometimes the snow piles protrude into the driving space of my driveway and make maneuvering difficult. This is not hard to understand given the layout of my drive: there are fences and walls all around and it really is a difficult drive to clear. That said, they are responsive when I point out issues. Most important in the snow removal business is that they actually show up and do it on time. I am a college professor and sometimes I HAVE to get to work. And I often worry that, when I get home, the drive will have a lot of snow on it and I won't be able to get back into my garage. These folks have never let me down on this front. They do show up on time to get me out. At least once I was in contact with Bruno, and he proposed coming later in the day than was good for me, but once I told him I really needed to get out, he found another crew to get me going.
Description of Work: Remove snow from my (rather restricted) driveway. The price number above is about what they get for a moderate snowfall. It can get quite a bit more expensive for a real storm.

Jeff met with us to go over the specifications of putting in a 12x12 cement slab. We'd never hired a snow removal service before, and frankly expected problems. But Masonworks was terrific. In spite of the terrible, awful, unrelenting snowfall they were able to deal with every storm efficiently and promptly. They cam twice to cart snow away by truck and at least once to rake from the roof. I'd recommend them to anyone and am looking forward to using them for the coming winter (2015-2016) though I hope we have less snow.

MasonWorks was a pleasure to work with and did an excellent job. There was not a lot of space to stage work or put debris and residents needed to move through the area while the work was going on. They did a great job with these constraints and there were no complaints from the neighbors or otherwise. Best of all, the new steps came out great. I would highly recommend MasonWorks.

Bruno and his team removed our rotten wood deck, the old concrete floor and steps and installed a paver patio (The RoundTable Collection in Onyx). His team did a great job of matching the existing fieldstone foundation by laying fieldstone steps topped with granite. We could not be happier with our new patio. Steps repaired this Spring. I had to delay the replacement of the retaining wall and Jeff and his team were agreeable to allow me to do that. Typically they take 4-6 weeks to schedule you in, so I got in touch in August for the work to happen in the fall. They had an opening and came out and rebuilt the retaining wall the next day. Bruno met me at the house in the morning. I let him know the chain link fence next to the retaining wall was being removed and replaced later this fall. He said they would need to remove it to do the wall. So they removed the fence. Unfortunately, they put the removed fence down on my neighbor's side, so the neighbors weren't too pleased. But Bruno and team removed the next day and completed the retaining wall. They were nice to dispose of the fence as well for a minimal fee. Quality work. I would recommend. NOTE: The removal of the wall made a lot of dust! Close your windows if you are having this done.

I was impressed with the professional initial interview and the the estimate form provided (broke down the jobs and showed the price in detail). They would build the front steps, not use prefabricated steps. I hired them and the job started on time. Workers were pleasant and professional. When they were almost finished with the front steps, I noticed that the height of the top step into the house was higher than the others. This distressed me because that was the problem with the old staircase. The top step into the house was so high it caused people to trip. I made this clear during the initial interview. When I mentioned the problem to them, they denied that it was wrong and they continued working on the steps I called the building inspector, who concurred with me. Masonworks corrected the mistake. The completed job looks beautiful.

Jeff Souza was very responsive to our request for an estimate in the fall of 2014. The original project was to replace the sidewalk, per the requirements of our insurer, but he noted the stairs were not code and he noted that, were we ever to replace them, it would be more efficient to do together with the sidewalk. We decided to do both, but with wintry weather on the way, we decided to postpone the project to the early spring after wintry weather, which, considering the awfulness of the winter of 2015, turned out to be wise. In early April, after the snow had finally melted, we reconnected with the company to get a firmer estimate based on more details. We did ask for an alternative estimate if we used a different material for the treads of the stairs, and it seems in retrospect that the brief delay involved with that caused the timing of our project to drift more than we had then expected. There were also odd lapses in time involving using the local post office for handling paperwork that seemed like they could have been eliminated using another way. Also, while we requested references for ironsmiths for new railings, we ultimately never received any. We ended up using Angies List to contract with a very good ironsmith. The bottom line is that this firm does top-quality work, but property owners perhaps should be less casual in their communications than we were. Ultimately, the work crew arrived the Friday after Memorial Day, and completed the work the next day. They were impressive, and I could not praise them more highly. The quality and care with which they did their work was among the highest I've ever seen with masons. The pitching of the paving on a surface that graded in two different ways was finely done. There were places in the paving work where they could have filled with polymeric sand, but they cut the small (perhaps 1/4-3/8" sides) wedges of pavers in the curved areas in quite fine handwork that is impressive once completed. The paving has performed beautifully this summer. We've had ants try to dig into the polymeric sand at the edge under hedges a couple of times, about a month apart, but light application of pesticide each time has prevented that from becoming a problem. Bottom line, this firm does great work.
Description of Work: He demolished and replaced century-old concrete entry (half flight) stairs that were in reasonable condition and a crumbling concrete sidewalk leading up to it (105sf). Sidewalk was replaced with pavers and the staircase was replaced by brick and bluestone.

Review of MasonWorks The entire process was great ? Shortly after soliciting a quote for a patio, Junior was able to come out to my property to measure, plan, and explain the process. Contracts were drafted up which covered all of the information we had agreed on, along with costs and payment plan. On the day of the installation, Bruno, Silvio and the crew arrived promptly to go over design, confirm material, and go over the plan for the work. The very same day the crew began AND finished the job! We originally wanted a half moon design, but changed out mind when Silvio showed us the standard rectangular design. We loved what we saw and went with the rectangular design. The patio came out great, solid, modern, and clean ? the crew was incredibly neat and respectful to our property. Highly recommend these guys.

They showed up as promised for the estimate and began the job and finished it on the dates I requested. They arranged for the permit and removed all the debris. We are very pleased with the results. Junior and Bruno were both a pleasure to deal with. They are an exceptionally professional outfit. However, once the work was done, they stopped responding to my emailed requests for them to return to clean the lime off the brickwork and advise me on what type of de-icing salt to use. Also, one of the steps was not pitched right and now collects water.

It was better than we expected. Jeff was very prompt and punctual. He came to see work and give a quote and came another time to answer our questions before signing for the project. He gave us quote for brick replacement which was quite expensive, he offered to use granite as wall as an alternative. First we were not quite how final result will look like, but it turned quite nice. He answered our questions promptly by email. His work crew were very friendly and worked very efficiently. Work finished within week including demolition of old crumbling brick structure. Even our hard to please neighbor (whom we share other side of the house) was quite happy with the result. Called on Tuesday and they didn't call me back until Thursday. Refused to get me a price on a basic exterior stone veneer job unless I went to the job site with him. Would not recommend - he was extremely rude on the phone and wasted my time. If he was too lazy or inexperienced to go to the property to see what I needed done, imagine what kind of experience you could have if you actually hired this person. You would probably have to babysit him while he is working to make sure the job gets done right.

Response from MasonWorks LLC
I find this report nothing short of a surreal joke. The client called me on Tuesday evening. I called him back on Wednesday and didn't get an answer. Called back again on Thursday and spoke with him. I told him I was calling to schedule a meeting. He promptly told me he didn't have the time to meet with me and that I should go look at the work. Really? And who is going to show me the work? It is like calling your doctor and tell him/her that you are sick and want medicine. The doctor then tell you to schedule a visit and you promptly tell him that you don't have the time for it. How will the doctor then know what you have? I cannot price a job that I don't know what it is. If the client has no time to show me the work I cannot look at it on my own. I am not looking for a future problem and I can guarantee you that once you go on your own to look at a job there will be a problem on the end of it. If the client was serious about it he would find the time. I offered to go any time in the morning, as early as he wanted and he refused. Never mind how rude he was on the phone.
