Masonworks was prompt in giving an estimate; they explained the options available clearly and well, enabling a quick decision. The crew was unfailingly polite and neat. The work was done more quickly than I would have believed possible and I couldn't be more pleased.
Description of Work: I needed outdoor steps replaced. They were irregular in size and shape, and I wanted them to match an existing rock wall, with blue stone steps.

The review and estimate were quick and professional. The contract was fully descriptive and included write up of all state consumer protections. Minor changes to the contract were turned around in a few days. Their crews are very busy, so I waited in the queue for three weeks. When I became worried, the office quickly returned my calls with info of how long remained. When the team arrived, they worked straight through the day. They broke up the old concrete, prepped the crushed rock bed, laid a wire mesh, and mixed, poured and smoothed the new concrete. When the initial curing was well along, they had evaluated the ramp and decided on a concrete one. Here, the crew was so busy that I had some difficulty getting a response on the ramp. But the response, when it came, was a same day laying of the ramp.
Description of Work: Replace concrete floor in a one car garage with front short ramp to an asphalt driveway.

Overall, I am very pleased. The project had two distinct portions. The first was masonry work to rip up portions of the floor, pour footings, and build four block walls and several pads for supports. The second was carpentry work to sister the joists. I thought both crews were skilled, professional, and efficient. They all did a great job of cleaning up and of respecting my neighbors and the property throughout the project. The initial bid appointment was handled by Jeff. Bruno then ran the masonry portion of the project, and Jeff ran the carpentry portion. Both were consistently professional and responsive when I called them. Jeff in particular took extra time on multiple occasions to make sure I understood things. Overall, I believe the work was done well. But there was a curveball towards the end that is worth a little time. I had been asking all along how some temporary screw jacks were going to be removed (their elimination was part of the reason for doing the project). Finally, at the end, it became clear that there would be a problem removing them. I believe that Masonworks felt the engineer's drawings didn't consider existing conditions properly; I believe the engineer felt that Masonworks hadn't built what he drew and should have called him to discuss challenges. I don't have the technical expertise to evaluate that one well and figure out how things got scrambled; I just know that I'd asked Bruno about it on the first day and workers from each crew thereafter. So I was disappointed that we had an issue late in the process. That said, once we identified the problem, I thought that Jeff was extremely professional and effective at dealing with it. He met with the engineer, kept the focus on finding solutions, and explained to me clearly what he would do. I have been in situations like this before, and his management of this situation was far better than I have seen from most contractors. At the end of the day, we agreed to a change order, and he completed the work. I think Jeff priced the change order extremely fairly (three new lally columns and footings, a bunch of additional reinforcement of sistering that had been notched or divided, and a new steel beam), and more importantly kept his focus on getting the job done well. At the end of the day, I figure the crews did have to come out again, and they all have to eat, so I didn't get stuck on paying a little more. Though I am disappointed that we wound up with a bit of a mess at the end of the job, I do believe that Jeff's handling of it is greatly to his credit. You don't always get to see how people handle problems. And based on my experience, I believe you can trust Jeff to handle them well and fairly. That goes a long way in my book. I do think the there is room for improvement on the communication side of the job. There was a lag of multiple weeks between my acceptance of the bid and the start of work; I had no idea what timelines were during this period. There was also a multiple week gap between the masonry and carpentry portions; again, I had no idea what was going on. Each time, I learned that we might be getting going when I noticed that someone had been in my house and called to figure out why. The team was very responsive when I called to figure out what was going on -- I simply found it odd that nobody was calling me to communicate proactively. And the same sort of situation basically led to the snarl at the end -- I was asking, but not hard enough, about the temporary supports. I would simply recommend to future clients that they be a little less comfortable with silence than I was -- I feel that if I had pushed harder for communication, my own frustrations would have been minimized. At the end of the day, I feel we got excellent work for a fair price. Old homes always have some challenge pop up, and I'm not surprised we ran into something here. If they're not worn out by my property, I plan to call Masonworks down the road for a second wave of work, and I would recommend them highly to others.
Description of Work: $30K basement repair to a 1900s era home with plenty of challenges. We hired an engineer who drew up a plan for four large walls to shore up the corners of the basement and for sistering of the joists. We had several companies bid the project; Masonworks was not the cheapest, but we felt the most confident in them. I am pleased with the work they did and would recommend them.

The job was a bit challenging on the carpentry part. Contractors work with plans and all plans must have notes which wasn't true for the carpentry part in this project . I should have looked at it more intensely which I didn't. My fault. That said I had to work to mitigate the problem which I'm glad the owners understands well. I always try to be fair and to do the work as best as possible. I'm very glad the client is happy. I apologize for the weeks it took between the masonry and carpentry. We got really busy and the carpentry had to wait longer than I anticipated. It was our pleasure to have been able to help you on this project. Thanks a lot
Amazing experience. Likely the best contractor experience I have ever had. They came out and looked at the wall and I had a written estimate that afternoon. The price was extremely good, much less than we had anticipated. When they were then able to schedule the work, they stuck to a very aggressive timeline and had completely rebuilt the wall in 6 days, much faster than anticipated. The work was excellent and the wall looked much better than we thought it would. Our neighbor immediately hired them to build a wall on his property before they were able to move their equipment.
Description of Work: We needed a 100 foot wall on the back of our property replaced. It was not an easy wall as it was retaining our entire back yard and also had a 90 degree bend to it that was in an area that was not easily accessible. The plan was to rebuild the wall using our old stones over a crushed stone footing and install a drainage system, something the previous wall was lacking and the reason for the wall failure.

The provider impressed me and my Architect from the get go and was accommodating to the needs of the design and made some helpful suggestions. They were very responsive and I received their estimate the same day as the the onsite visit! The estimate was in the same range as other estimates and they honored the Angie's list discount. The work was scheduled about 3 weeks out. When it commenced the crew were on-site promptly and worked solidly for approximately 10 days and were very polite, careful and considerate. As worked progressed, they coordinated with me and my Architect really well to ensure the project was consistent with the initial designs. In interpreting the initial designs, they clearly knew what they were doing and were very efficient. They obtained certain stone steps that were really beautiful and offset the organized pattern of the patio really well. In short, I am really happy with the overall outcome - I would not hesitate to recommend this team for your next project!
Description of Work: I needed to demolish a small wood deck and existing patio in my backyard and replace it with a larger raised patio. The patio needed to accommodate a pergola that will be added later. Additionally, a 50 ft path needed to be installed with some light preparation of beds for planting in the spring.

During the initial consult, Jeff was pleasant and offered many ideas of how we could accomplish our goals in the yard in a cost effective way. There was a bit of a long delay between this meeting and the actual work (through no fault of MasonWorks), but once I reached out to let them know we were ready... they contacted me and were able to arrive a day earlier than expected to begin the work. Bruno was the on site supervisor and he came early that first day to go over the proposal and be sure he had all the details down. Once the guys were out there... the work was complete in just over a week. It would have been even faster if they didn't need to coordinate with a very slow fence installer that we'd hired separately. The quality of the install was great and all the on site guys were courteous and professional. We are very pleased with the end result.
Description of Work: We asked MasonWorks to install a multi level patio with concrete pavers and a granite block border around our front planting beds.

Excellent Area 7x13 Used blue stone
Description of Work: Walkway front entrance of our house.
Jeff Souza and his crew from Mason Works were excellent. They were professional and did the job exactly as we had hoped. Mason Works installed a beautiful bluestone walk and stoop with brick risers. The stones were perfect, and they were able to find an extra long piece of bluestone to run the width of the stoop. We couldn't be happier with both the process and the end result and have already referred them to friends for future work.
Description of Work: We needed a new driveway, front walk and front stoop. The walk and stoop were bluestone with brick risers. The driveway was asphalt with a single row of belgian blocks lining the edge of the driveway.
The work looks _outstanding_. Neighbors stop by all the time to thank me for beautifying the street. Work is done mostly by subcontractors, but the subs are really nice people to work with. In addition to the usual change orders, a few things were not mentioned (or included) in the estimate that should have been (e.g., disconnecting and reconnecting the air conditioner, Somerville curb cut fee). These extra expenses that could have been predicted in advance were <5% of the total cost. A really nice team of workers and a great project. I highly recommend them and would definitely hire them again.
Description of Work: Complete re-landscaping of small city yard (formerly a chainlink surrounded crumbling concrete retaining wall, with an asphalt-paved yard inside). They were able to start the project about a month after I purchased the house, which was nice (in other words, Jeff was willing to schedule the project before I closed on the purchase).

We are very happy with the project. I work in the trades and know how hard it is to find the skill and knowledge to get the job done. The stone was Boston Colonial. The stone comes in big slabs that need to be broken down to smaller pieces to create the look. This is a skill, done with a special masonry hammer to get the pieces the right size to end with a beautiful wall we got! The tradesmen worked about 3 full days. The men always on time and very respectful of the neighborhood. The area was cleaned up after job was done. Beautiful wall! Yes would hirer again... in fact already have for walk way in front of our house! Excellent job!!

Very happy with the job!!! I work in the trades and understand how difficult it is to find people that have the skill and knowledge to do a job like this. The type of stone was Boston Colonial. This stone comes in big slabs and is broken down to small stones by the mason with a special masonry hammer, so it fits and lines up correctly. Very time consuming and a skill really of an artist! the masons worked about 3 days always moving and cleaned up yard nicely. Excellent job on the wall! Would we hirer back, yes!! Junior showed up at the time we arranged, was very knowledgeable and understood exactly what I was looking form. I received a quote by email the next day. I made some changes to the design and Junior was very accommodating and great about getting me an updated quote. Once the quote was signed off on I was scheduled for about 3 weeks later. Bruno called the day before and confirmed the time and address. The team showed up on time and explained the scope of work. It took them two days to complete the work and it came out amazing. It looks amazing!! All of the workers were 100% committed to this job. They always arrived a bit before 8am and stayed late (till 6 or 7pm).. I never once looked out and saw anything, but them working. They were incredibly efficient and the job went pretty quickly. We started with getting an estimate and I found them to be the most proactive in getting our business... by far. The pavers and space look beautiful and even though we have a 2 year warranty I don't expect any issues. They said I could call 5-10 years down the line if we need a replacement. They even left some just in case so we'll never have to guess on the color/style. They did a final walkthrough today and told me free of charge they'll be doing an acid wash on the stone wall just to clean it up even more. I thought it looked fine for outside stones, but what do I know. They were very professional, courteous and gracious so I would definitely recommend them and use them again in the future.
Description of Work: They completely re did our patio area surrounding the pool. They demolished our existing patio of poured concrete and removed plants/flowers/trees so that we could have more patio space. I was happy that they replanted what they could in a different spot. In order to prevent runoff, they also created a stone wall at the end of our property that meets up with a row of bushes and is now adjacent to the patio.

MasonWorks did a great job with the overall project. The initial engagement went very well. Jeff wanted to make sure things are done correctly and engaged a civil engineer to spec out the stabilization needs for the workshop area. I called him back almost a year after the civil engineer did his survey and he was still open to do the project. Even though it took longer than expected to start the project, he was communicative through out the process as he was trying to squeeze me in as soon as possible. After the project started, his crews were very professional and communicative through out the project. I like the way the garage floor and drain turned out! You will get a quality job with Masonworks. Price is likely on par with others I've consulted - not too high / too low.

Our pool deck (originally installed by another firm) had to be completely taken up and reinstalled properly. We asked that the original stone (which we loved) be reused; thereby making the job much more difficult. Jeff's crew did an amazing job! It is now 1.5 years after they completed the job and it looks fantastic. Last month they also reinstalled the stone patio that surrounds our pool house. Once again their work proved to be excellent. Both jobs were completed by incredibly hard working and respectful crews. As someone who has paid very good money for very mediocre masonry work in the past, I am very grateful to have found Masonworks on Angie's List! Thanks Jeff! Thanks Bruno!

Very well. First, Masonworks was by far the most responsive vendor we approached. Jeff did a great job helping us pick out stone and figure out details of the design. They got to the work quickly, and had it all done in an efficient and high quality manner. The front wall Jeff suggested turned out very well. Bruno oversaw everything and was quite responsive to our needs. One thing that I really appreciate: after they got their check and they were "done" I raised some minor issues for them to address, they came back promptly and addressed them. That shows they care about quality to customer satisfaction, not just getting the job done. I would (and likely will) work with them again and I recommend them.
