it went very well. There were a couple of weather related delays (there was a brutal heat wave in the middle of the project), but that's understandable for any outdoor project. Part of what was so nice is that he had given us such a complete breakdown at the beginning that we chose to do most of the hedge removal ourselves, because we knew what the cost savings for our labor would be. The job completed in close to the original time estimates and on target for the pricing. The final result is a very attractive retaining wall 3' high around 2 edges of the property, with a secondary wall set back to allow a dedicated planting space that we've used to good advantage this year to grow lots of produce.
Description of Work: Ansu did a full retaining wall/raised bed project on two sides of the property where there had only been a low sloping lawn and hedges. it was a major revamp, in the heat of the summer, and he and his crew did an excellent job. Even before the actual work, he was very responsive about drawing up a number of different plans with different lumber-size and bed height options, with a full cost breakdown for each option.

We found Ansu through Craigslist. Landscaping project--sod front lawn, put in a tree. Day of appointment for estimate, he canceled, but then came out a few days later. He seemed very meticulous, and a nice young guy. Produced a very thorough, thoughtful and professional estimate for us. We arranged for him to stop by our house with the contract once we?d settled on a plan. I couldn?t make it that night because I was kept late at work, and asked him to leave it behind with my wife so I could look at it later. This is where things got a little weird?he seemed to become suspicious about this. He said he didn?t want to leave the contract, because he had already signed it, and worried that we would make a change to it that would then bind him to do something he didn?t want to do. I didn?t think this made a lot of sense. I suggested he cross out his signature and leave it with us, if he was concerned, and that?s what he did. I later accepted the terms by e-mail. Since I missed the meeting, I offered to send the contract by e-mail and the down payment on the job by Paypal. He agreed, and I sent him the deposit right away. I then forgot to send him the signed contract on a particular date. To Ansu, this was some sort of ultimatum apparently, and Friday morning when he was to buy materials to begin the job on the following Monday (a date he?d already put back once), he instead up and returned our deposit electronically and canceled the job with a ?sorry we could not do business? even thought we were in fact doing business?sort of a screw you. Given the amount we?d communicated, the fact the deposit had changed hands, we were already agreed, had a start date, this was kind of stunning?the notion that he would do this without calling up and saying this is what I think I?m going to do first is just bizarre. Anyway, I sent him the signed contract the moment I got his e-mail, a few hours later, and practically begged him to reconsider?I was in the midst of this crazy whirlwind at my own job I explained?since we?d invested a month in setting it up, and I liked him and we had very much wanted the job done early this month. He seemed suspicious and hostile in e-mail (wouldn?t answer my call), saying I?d made his company wait too long for the ?signature? it required (although he already had the deposit and substantial e-mails evidencing our agreement), the four hours or so we were past his deadline (which I really hadn?t been conscious of) put an intolerable strain on his business, that sort of thing, as if Zijan Landscaping were Haliburton, and we were not in fact people on a first name basis, one of whom wanted to shell out $ to the other! Seemed rigid and supersititous about the contract issue, and had no problem leaving us in the lurch the day before he was to begin work.
Description of Work: Provided a very thorough, competent and thoughtful estimate for several different projects. No services performed, however, because contractor abruptly canceled the job the business day before work was to begin. Was to pay $833 to sod front yard; put in a rain barrell for $115; $133 to plant a tree (plus cost of tree); $109 to remove a tree.

Response from The Productive Earth
On 4/25/10 I received a landscaping inquiry from this client. Our meeting was set for 4/28, 6:15pm. On 4/27, I pulled a muscle, and realized I would not be able to make it. I emailed the client, and worked out an alternative. On 5/3/10, I met with this client to see his two properties. I gathered notes and measurements, and emailed him an estimate on 5/7/10. On 5/9/10, the client agrees the estimate, & we discussed a time to meet to sign a contract. At this point I tentatively put him on our schedule to start 5/28. In trying to find a time to meet to sign the contract, we agreed on 5/20 at 6pm. I arrived at his home and was greeted by his wife on Thursday, 5/20. She informed the her husband wasn't home, and asked if I could leave the contract. I said it was against our policy to do so, however I am available at anytime through the weekend, and next week to come back to do the signing. I also informed her that the reason we don't leave the contract is due to problems we have had in the past with clients crossing parts of the contract. I spoke to the client via phone while there, I informed of our policy. The client said he was a lawyer and was sure there was no reason that I couldn't leave the contract. I informed the client that our contract terms were available for review on our website, however he still insisted that I leave the contract. After some discussion I agreed to leave the contract, and said that I would need the contract before starting the job. While the client did offer to have his wife give me a deposit check at this point, I refused, saying I would wait until after he has had a chance to review the contract before taking a deposit. I also informed him that I would keep him on the schedule, and also take a soil sample and send that out--assuming that we would get a contract in hand over the weekend. The client agreed, and said he would touch base over the weekend. On 5/25, the client informed me the contract was ok, and offered to scan and send it to me. I agreed, and said that we would need to push back the start of his project to 6/7, as I was awaiting the soil test result. On 5/26, I received a Paypal deposit from the client, with a message attached saying, "contract to follow." On 6/2, I emailed the client saying we had not received the contract, and would need that by 6/4, at 9am, in order to order materials for the following Monday, which is his start date. On 6/4 at 9:30am I had not received his contract, and I sent the client an email saying we had taken him off the schedule, and I refunded his money. I said that we had time to get a contract from him, and were not able to work under these delays. While I can be flexible with some of our policies, there are some that are required to make this business run proper and fair. I do wish we could have worked something out, but not being able to accomplish a simple step, such as getting written and signed consent, I feel is a conflict that we could not work around.
