I used Ranco in the past and they were fine. This time, when I called to have my air conditioners checked, they said they needed my credit card info to hold the appointment. They charged my card full price for work before they even came to do the work. I called and canceled and asked for a credit to my charge card.

I would use them again if I couldn't find anybody comparable. I thought the price was very high. I had bought the same items from another company and they were selling me things and it was much less. I thought it was more expensive than it needed to be. I remember at the time I thought it was expensive but I didn't fight it because my tenant needed it. They showed up when they said they would.

We liked Ranco. We were a customer of their's for years. They did all the service on our oil furnace for years. It's a forced air unit. We got competitive bids and they did the service for us. I was very satisfied. They were good people. They took care of us for many years. It was a long relationship and it's because we liked the work they did. They gave an estimate. They did the work. I had a couple of issues I had to have them fix. I was very pleased. I even recommended them to the new owner.

The technician: - Did not bring refrigerant - Replaced air filters with ones that I had purchased despite the fact that I had just replaced them - Literally walked around and looked at HVAC system. Did not actually tune up anything. - Asked me to turn up the thermostat so the heat would turn on. He told me the room was getting warmer just in case I couldn't tell. - Asked me to turn down the thermostat so the AC would turn on. He told me the room was getting colder. Again just in case I couldn't recognize the temperature change. - Spent 2 minutes hosing down the condensers outside This is the entirety of the service they provided and then tried to charge nearly $400 for it. Multiple Emails questioning the service were not responded. Because no service was provided, I have been disputing the bill ever since. Just received another bill this weekend prompting this review.
Description of Work: Asked them to recharge refrigerant in the AC units and check a bad heat exchanger. Both were identified by two home inspectors and another HVAC company to require repair. After contacting RANCO was told by Matt that recharging the refrigerant would be a part of a tune up service. They would check the heat exchanger on site. Since one of the AC units was running poorly, I agreed to the service.

[Member Name Removed], We appreciate your feedback. I apologize for the experience you have had with Ranco. When you originally contacted us, you mentioned you had a defective heat exchanger and inefficient AC. We sent our technician out to collect detailed information on the furnace to ensure that the correct part would be ordered and also to tune-up the AC systems. Our technician was not able to complete each item our AC tune-up checklist. However, he did clean the outdoor condenser coils, checked thermostat operation, checked Freon levels via the sight glass, cleared out condensate drains, and checked compressor operation. As a result you were not charged for 1 hour labor instead of the full tune-up fees for the two ACs. The technician who came out was not incompetent to perform a tune-up, but he is not a troubleshooter. When he encounters a faulty component on a tune-up (like your heat exchanger) he notes it and the office follows up to schedule a time to have the component repaired or replaced by someone on our install team. He is also not there to install new components like thermostats or a new heat exchanger. We aim to be clear in our communication, not misleading. You were quoted our tune up rates in advance via e-mail and expressed no concern at the associated costs, nor did you ask what was or was not included. When you communicated your dissatisfaction that each item on the tune-up checklist was not covered, we reduced the charges to reflect the work that was completed. We clearly did not meet your expectations. We have instituted a policy of requiring a sign off on tune-up checklists with associated costs prior to the tune-up as a result of your experience. I am also sorry for the delays in communication attempting to resolve your concerns. That was a result of my oversight. Matt

On the date of service, I called the office and reconfirmed the appointment, making sure the office secretary knew how to reach me. I called again two hours into the appointment to inquire when the serviceman was coming, and could not get an answer, but left my phone number with the secretary, asking her or the serviceman to call when they found out. No call. At the end of the four-hour window, I called again, and asked the operator to page the serviceman, again leaving my phone number. I did this once again at six hours, still no response and no serviceman. The next morning, when I called the office secretary to complain about the no-show, and to re-schedule, she told me I had not given her a current phone number (which is untrue as I left it four times the previous day and it shows on caller ID) and therefore I was at fault. Then she couldn't reschedule for another week and argued with me again saying I had not notified them of my current phone number, and they only had old, discontinued phone numbers for me. I have fired this firm and will not recommend them again.
Description of Work: This provider installed my central AC 9 years ago and I've had them maintain and service it in the years since without problems. This year, when the unit stopped cooling, I called to make a service appointment, and they could not make a serviceman available for a week, and then in a four-hour window. On the date of the appointment, the serviceman did not show. Dealing with the office made matters worse. I fired them.

She then mistakenly copied your old phone number on file onto the service form - leading to lots of confusion. We were short a tech yesterday, so our owner Ray was actually running service calls and had hoped to catch you in the morning and not the afternoon. When we could not reach you at the old number the dispatcher told Ray not to go even in the afternoon, for some unknown reason. The bottom line is, we dropped the ball and you suffered for it. I will put a note in our system to contact you next spring for a free AC tune-up as an attempt to apologize for the experience you had this year. Very professional, very prompt - work was done when scheduled and done right. We had one emergency while we were on vacation (frozen pipe that flooded basement), which was discovered by our housesitter. Ranco responded immediately and stopped the leak. Also, both our HVAC and tankless water heater installations were eligible for energy efficiency program rebates. Val at Ranco took are of all of the paperwork for these rebates - I didn't have to do a thing and the checks just arrived in the mail. Thanks, Val!

I was unable to be present for the installation but they showed up exactly as arranged, proceeded with the installation, then followed up with a phone call to confirm that everything was completed. There was no debris or other evidence that they had been there other than the new water heater installed!

They called the morning of the appointment to confirm. I was in the shower. Because I didn't pick up the phone when they called, they decided I had "forgotten" the appointment and they cancelled it. I did not know this, however, and waited for them. Finally I called Ranco and was told my appointment was cancelled because of my "failure" to answer the phone when they phoned me. What??? However, someone could come later in the morning, say 11:30 a.m. I waited for this someone, let's call him Person A, and he called to say he was running late on the job but someone else (his boss?), let's call him Person B, could come at 1 p.m. OK. Day blown already, I would wait til then. Then person A called to say that he himself could actually come more like 12 noon, how would that be? Great, I said. So I waited til then. No show. No call. So I called Person A and he said Person B was actually coming, not him. But Person B was going to come at say 2:30 or so, because his other job was running long. I could not believe how they were jerking me around. "Couldn't you have called me to say you weren't coming at noon like you said you were going to do? You are not respecting my time," I said. He apparently has never heard of using the words, "I am sorry" when speaking to a customer. Instead, he blew his top, yelled at me that I could just find another company to do the work. Great advice! We did just that. BTW we loved Amanda's/Ranco when they were just our oil provider...but thanks to this experience, we are no longer their customers. We now heat with gas. When we convert our 2nd furnace to gas, we will be using another company, one that treats its customers with simple courtesy and respect.
Description of Work: We were looking for an estimate on oil to gas furnace changeover, plus duct work, for 2 furnaces in our 2 family house. I set up a morning appointment and stayed home from work for it. They assured me they had expertise in gas conversions, heat pumps, ductless dual mini splits, you name it, they could do it. We were pretty excited about getting quotes for all these options. Due to prior good experiences with Amanda's/Ranco vis a vis oil delivery, we trusted them. Turns out you should just buy oil from them, that's it.

The work was done in 3-4 days and guys were very professional. A few weeks after installation I noticed they tapped into the water feed for the sill c*** after the shut off valve. They came out that weekend to put in a new valve and even installed an anti-freeze sill c*** for just the cost of parts. We also found a couple wet spots later on and again they promptly came out to fix it at no cost.
Description of Work: Ranco remove the 60 year old oil boiler, oil tank, gas hot water heater and some low pipes. They installed a high efficiency gas boiler, new hot water tank fed from boiler, and replaced low hanging pipes with new copper.

Description of Work: Oil to gas conversion. Even though they said they've done hundreds, they didn't seem to know the process which meant we were left without heat/hot water for days!Nation Grid could not come out the very same day they installed something, we had to schedule it and it took days! Also ranco didn't communicate well about the chimney cleaning that was necessary, so that set us back, too. I only said I would use them again because I don't know who else I'd use. Unfortunate experience because our experience with Amanda's Oil has been very good.

From start to finish, Ranco was fantastic to work with. Initially they came to give me a quote and their recommendations stood out among many contractors I had interviewed. They helped us walk through applying for the MassSave Heat Loan program and assisted us in resolving a few issues that arose. Communication was good throughout the planning process. The actual work took about two and a half weeks. The crew was excellent to work with - courteous, professional, and clean. The work itself was done to a very high standard. They went the extra mile by doing things like tucking duct work into the basement ceiling to keep it out of the way and placing air registers where the radiators had previously stood so that we didn't have to patch much flooring. And perhaps most importantly, the system they installed works well. To cap it all off, Ranco even filled out my warranty and rebate applications for me at the conclusion of the work. I can't say enough to recommend this company.
Description of Work: Replaced heating system in both units of two family home. Removed ancient steam boilers and radiators, installed new forced air heating system in first floor unit and forced air heating and air conditioning in second floor unit.

Initial contact with the company was made on the 26th and after describing my less than satisfactory experience with another company in town, talking with the staff at Amanda's (Ranco Enterprises) was a breath of fresh air. The terms were clearly explained and when I asked about a service to meet my specific needs as a landlord, options were offered that could meet both the immediate and long term needs for the property and offer the lowest possible price at the same time. I was promised a first delivery on the 27th or 28th and found that the tank had been filled on the 27th. It's still early in the relationship with this company, but so far things look quite promising. The willingness to work with me as someone who does not actually reside at the service address went a long way to raising my comfort level, and so far they have done exactly as they stated.

Ray came out to my house to quote the work central air work and seemed knowledgeable at the time. He said he would get a quote to me within the week. After two weeks I called to check on the quote and was told someone would get back to me soon. I called again two weeks later and was told the same thing. It has now been two months since they came to my house and still no quote. In summary, don't waste your time having Ranco come out for central air replacement as apparently they could care less about your business.

Ranco's quote fill near the middle of our estimates, but theirs was the most detailed and identified some issues that other estimators missed (and could have been costly). Their manager/sales rep was courteous and answered all our questions. The team that did the job (2 guys) were clean in their workspace and relatively non-intrusive. They were pretty quick and when issues came up, they resolved them quickly. In addition, they were proactive and knowledgeable in identifying potential improvements on the fly and in the end, the system is much less intrusive than we originally expected. Our original plan was to do a system that had normal ducts, but once the team opened the walls, they found that a pair of beams blocked access for a full duct system. As we were prepared to give up, they identified a work-around (with a mini-duct system) which raised the price - unfortunately - but allowed us to get AC - fortunately. The biggest challenges in working with Ranco, is that their manager wasn't very communicative. Other than the first morning when he was here for 10 minutes, we only saw him once more - when we determined that we couldn't use a standard duct system. We left several voice-mails with him and never got a direct response (generally it came through the on-site team or an office associate). Also, their estimate for time was a little low. The original estimate was 5 days and the full job took 8 days. We should have expected this due to the age of our building, but since most of the estimates were comparable, we didn't question it. Following the end of the job, we had one small operating problem which Ranco addressed quickly (even sending out the electrician to do a relatively simple fix).
Description of Work: Ranco installed AC in our 1860's brownstone (2 ton AC with mini-ducts). The job also included adding pipes and e- to the roof (there is one unit between us and the roof). Note that Ranco was one of six different installers that we considered.

The work was great. The guy was very good at explaining what was going on and how much it would cost. They also called me when they were 10 minutes away, which I appreciated. They arrived on time.
