o start this review I say where do I begin, We hired Mr. Everett Mitchell for an entire 2nd floor addition in March 2011. Mr. Mitchell was very engaging and seemed to have all the right answers to get us to sign a contract that was only geared towards him.. (PS have a lawyer check your contract..it will save you later if you hire Mr. Mitchell ) The work started right away and so did him collecting the payments. Then the problems started.. He miss calculated some major structural code issues ( like getting us a set of stairs up to the second floor) and wanted us to start changing the design because he could not do math..Thank goodness the code had actually changed with in the past few years ( which he was not aware of ) and we got stairs in..Not great stairs, but they are in. That was the downward spiral of the rest of the project. At this time he had the majority of our money, and only the finish work to complete. Which was absolutely shotty. Uneven floors, uneven baseboards, plumbing issues, Fans in bathrooms that are not the correct size and still cause mold build up, Plasters that smoked in the house, Cigarette butts all over the property from his subcontractors the list could just go on and on. Let me wrap this up..We had to hire a lawyer to get Mr Mitchell to come in and finish the project because he did not want to fix some major issues like the uneven hardwood floors that he wanted us to pay for. We had to hire a mediator to make sure that the remainder of the project was completed to some standard.. A NIGHTMARE!! and COSTLY.. So in Mr Mitchells contract is stated that he was responsible for warranty items for 1 year after occupancy was granted, and we have a list of issues that have transpired that Mr Mitchell needs to fix that he has not returned for. Cracked walls all thru out the second floor, Cracked floors, No heat in the back bedroom( we think he didn't insulate my sons bedroom) so now we are heading into 2nd winter with out heat. Again the list could go on and on. Plumbing issues..Blocked Dryer duct because he put the wrong vent on( again Not CODE) I know you are exhausted from hearing my rant. Well Guess what the Warranty is about to expire and after months and months of having back and forth e-mails with the mediator trying to get Mr. Mitchell to return he has not. All I can say is I hope you read this review and as rambling as it is, and confusing you get a quick overview as to how horrific a project with Everett Mitchell and Mitchell Design and Construction can be. Please do not let his first impression grab you as it did us. He would never give you our reference on paper to have you call us, or take pictures of our house before and after. Please Please.. I have waited until now to right this review waiting to see If Mr Mitchell would do the right thing with the warranty items, and he has not. Do not put your self thru the same aggravation that we have had to endure.. It was 2 + years of our lives that we will now have to spend many many more trying to fix.

The dormer was done well. But finishing the bathroom was a nightmare. Nevermind that the job cost twice as much as the original estimate. Ev explained he could not have known the problems that he would find when he opened up the plumbing. Thats fine. What really irked me is that just weeks after he finished three of the five plumbing fixtures he installed were loose and not working correctly. What really really irked me is that I have been trying to get him to come back and return to fix them and he is completely missing in action. NOrmally he contracts out plumbing to a plumber but he installed the fixtures himself and thats why they failed. The reason he did it himself is he said the plumber that started the job was busy...for over a month until he finally did it himself. The job took way longer than it needed to and he blamed me because I had my father do the tile work. But it was just a lousy excuse. And another thing that kills me is that he ordered a 700 dollar shower fixture becuase I had shown him a photo of one I like from home depot. The price was 350 and I just wanted a similar one. Didnt realize that he would get the exact one and that it didnt include the valve which was an extra 350. He didnt tell me until it was too late and it was installed in the wall! Some advice would have been helpful. And it doesnt work properly and he wont come back and fix it. Got his money and took off! NEVER NEVER NEVER AGAIN!
Description of Work: Built out a dormer and finished a bathroom on third floor.

When we started with Mitchell Design and Construction he was very interested in our business because his was slow. He got off to a fast start but that all changed as he began getting other work. I had just had a baby so we were very interested in finishing fast. Everett Mitchell, the owner, told us the job should take 10-12 weeks but it actually took almost 20 weeks. He started the work in February and we had to postpone my son's first birthday party for the last week in June to July because we were not sure Everett would be done. Towards the end of the job Everett would only send somebody over to do a few jobs and we might not see anybody for a week or more at a time. We told Everett from the beginning that we wanted to do the job inexpensively but not cheaply. We were willing to pay a little more for quality but we just were not interested in very cheap or very expensive products. We did not want granite counter tops but we did not want junky counter tops. Everett said he understood. However, all of the finish work is very cheap and within a year beginning to fall apart. The basic construction overall was good. I am not worried that the walls will be caving in or the foundation is going to have problems, but all of the finish work and all of his subcontractors were poor and the work was awful. For example, the kitchen floor which is linoleum was a disaster from the start, but Everett would never admit it. The floor squeaked and was uneven. Everett said it was uneven because the floor was part of the old house and there would be no problems with the linoleum on his new construction. However, when the linoleum was put in on the new floor Everett built it was also uneven but Everett offered no solutions to fix the problem. Also, Everett was not a trustworty contractor at all. If we asked him to add on little things he overcharged us on jobs by thousands of dollars. When we caught on to this we began to bring in our own subcontractors to finish some of the work and this enraged Everett. I think that the problem was that he had underbid our job and was trying to make up the money on little jobs we wanted to add on. Another example of his dishonesty is that I called the subcontractor who did the floor less than a year later and asked him to redo the linoleum. I told him that the linoleum was cracking, bubbling up, and coming up at the seams. He said that Everett never paid him for the linoleum because we were unhappy with the work. Everett never gave us any of that money back so that we could redo the floors ourselves. Another example of the finish work being horrible is that the kitchen cabinets are very nice (we paid a lot extra for them) but Everett through the cabinets in on his way to vacation and some of the doors open the wrong way. When I asked Everett about them he said that I was crazy. However, whenever I ask anyone to get something from the cabinets in question they try to open them from the way I believe they should be opened and are puzzled why they open the way they do. In the end Everett did not finish the promised work because we could just not get along and I did not want him in our house any longer. We had to spend several thousand of dollars on handymen and other contractors to finish the work we wanted done. This was a horrible experience and I would never recommend Mitchell Design and Construction to anybody.
Description of Work: Designed an addition to our house about 16ft. by 30ft. Also, built a farmer style porch with a handicapped ramp. The addition involved turning a living room into a kitchen and adding on a living room and a master bedroom with a master bathroom.
