It's hard to realistically imagine that my expectations could have been surpassed as much as they were. Wagner was very accessible and initiated contact when the project was at critical stages and key decisions needed to be made. He was reliable and kept me appraised of where the project stood and what would be accomplished when. I was so happy with the way the basement project went that I decided to hire him for a few other smaller home improvement projects we had been considering. There are a few notable things about Wagner. He is an efficient, first-rate carpenter. Though he is young, his carpentry work betrays years of seasoning. He has a good eye for design - one of the things that sold us on using him was the portfolio of work he showed us through pictures taken on his digital camera. The cabinetry work he had done was excellent and really makes this new living area stand out. He is also a good project planner - the work involved significant plumbing, electrical work, masonry and painting. He handled the project planning in such a way so that there was very little idle time and had a very good handle on what was going on and when the project would be ready for the next stage. Our house is nearly one hundred years old and the original builders probably never envisioned that the basement would be turned into a comfortable living area. Wagner was good at dealing with the difficulties that come with taking an older space and making the adjustments required to create a natural looking space. When something didn't work out, he was not averse to changing it. The receiver wouldn't fit in the cabinet space that had been designed for it. He managed to change some of the woodworking so that it would fit. The dormer ended up having too large of a vertical footprint, blocking my wife s view of the backyard. He took a day to modify the dormer to give it more slope. One other thing I should mention. I was very concerned about waterproofing for this project. I was concerned enough to go ahead and interview a few masons with waterproofing expertise with the intent of having a French drain and dehumidification system installed. After hiring Wagner, I asked him if he would not mind working with a mason I had selected. Justifiably, he was a little hesitant as he wanted to be able to manage the project as he was accustomed to. He gave me the go ahead and worked well with the mason and adjusted the project to accommodate the recommendations from the mason. Pricing was fixed per project. I don't know if this is true of all his projects. One of his references told us that he gave them estimates and ended up sticking to them. We ended up negotiating a price for the additional work.

Wagner quickly returned my call and came around to survey the job the next day. A quote was quickly emailed to us soon after. Wagner & co handled what was a messy job extremely well. The dust was kept to a minimum. He and his crew carefully cleaned up the house every day; they made living through a large demolition as easy as possible. They were always courteous and friendly. For the pocket doors, Wagner directed us to a local lumber yard where we could pick our door. The other door was already within the house - he restored, extended and fit it to the slightly larger opening. He has transparent pricing on materials - preferring to be paid for his skills and not have to gouge or skimp on material costs. Wagner took into account the period features of our house, suggesting materials that would be sympathetic but also modern and economical without compromising on the final appearance. Overall, it went well and we are very satisfied.
