They came out and measured my yard and I was supposed to get an estimate via email the next day and never came. I’ve called several times and left messages and emailed several times directly and through Angie’s list and never got any kind of response. Very unprofessional. Either they are out of business or they didn’t want to do the job but very unprofessional not to let me know either way

Excellent! My sales contact Jeff was terrific in helping me select the right product, style and colors for my budget. Can't say enough for the hard-working installation crew -they were punctual, courteous, worked all day long, open to making a few changes, helped stack my used bricks, cleaned up after themselves, and finished in two days. I love my new patio and have invited numerous friends over to enjoy it with me.

We contacted Crowley Concepts regarding synthetic grass suitable for an area used heavily by our two dogs. The area concerned leads directly to the back door and the amount of mud and grass our Irish Setters were able to bring into the house was competition level! This area also has the deck and grill area so keeping this area clean is a priority. Joe came for a site visit after having explained about the synthetic grass - we had previously met him at the Boston Home Show in early 2012. The area for the work also included an inspection hatch for the septic system and two irrigation sprinkler heads. Additionally we wanted a mowing edge added round the exterior of the fence, a paved area for the grill and a paved step into the rest of the garden. The team arrived as expected - Crowley's had advised of a delay due to the weather; the communication level was good. The team worked well and kept the area as clean and tidy as possible. We had to keep the dogs off the area whilst the work was done so during the day they went to doggy day care. The work took approximately three days. Albie came back with information I asked for on a suitable cleaner which is used by the owner of a dog day care which has the same synthetic grass; it is called Simple Green and it's non toxic and environmentally friendly. Very happy with the entire process. The number of people on the job was impressive as was the amount of machinery used! The area looks wonderful and we are very happy. A collection of pictures of the work as it progressed was sent after the work was done which was a nice touch.

The estimate and shrub selection process seemed to go smoothly. We didn't have a specific date that he could do the install. One day I got the call telling me he would be installing everything the next day. Great, I had the day off, so I could supervise. Unfortunately there was a problem or something, nothing got installed that day and needed a second day to complete the install. Unfortunately, I was not there to supervise the digging/installation. I had marked the property line, so they could plant the appropriate distance from property line. However, when I got home, the shubs well installed and bed (mound of dirt) was into the neighbors property. They had dug up the neighbor grass and left it dug up. Another tree was planted directly on the property line. I know that the standard rule is to dig 2.5 feet from the property line. Why didn't the lanscaper know this. I told them they had to move it because it is on the neighbor's property. They said that once those are planted, there is no moving them. Now I have to constantly trim so that they don't grow any more into the neighbors yard. The estimate was another nightmare. The initial estimate was $5000. The day the shrubs were delivered the estimate went up to $10,000. Upon completion, the cost jumped another $5000 for a total of $15,000. With the explanation that he needed a lot more guys to do the job than expected. I learned a lot from this bad experience:(1) always get a written estimate(2) always have contractor call if cost runs over the estimate due to unforseen problems. (3) always be home to supervise the work.

Response from Crowley's Concepts
Dear Angie’s List, I would like to respond to a review from a project that was completed on June 6, 2006 that was just recently posted and it’s now 2012, six years later. The day this customer states there was a problem and we could not come out to do the work, we were actually available and ready to go but she called and said she decided she wanted to go to the nursery. We are certainly always more than willing to accommodate our customers. Therefore, instead of my crew working that day, the customer and myself drove to the nursery in Sudbury, MA so she could hand pick and choose what she wanted to make sure everything was to her standards. In regards to the her marking the property line for the shrubs and trees to be placed on so she won’t have any concerns being on her neighbors property, her neighbor is a customer of ours also so we wanted to contact him just to make sure everything was fine and he said there was nothing to worry about that he was not concerned about anything. He did not mention anything about his grass being dug up and left that way. It could be possible that her large shrubs are on her neighbors property now due to the fact that after six years they are going to grow substantially and if are not properly taken care of by pruning, could result in this occurring. When this customer states that their shrubs had to be moved and my crew saying it can’t be done caught me off guard. If at any time a customer is not happy with the placement of their plants, shrubs, or trees, we are more than happy to move them if need be. My crew always relocates plants if instructed to do so by our customers and this is why I am confused with that statement. Thank you, Joe Crowley

The grass looks great. They found a clever way to handle the large tree root that was sticking out of the ground, making the area around it look very natural. I received one other quote from 360 Sports Systems. The cost was twice as much. They seemed to have marginally better grass product. Joe from Crowley's seemed like a good guy I could trust. Ted from 360 seemed a little used car salesmanish. I did need to ping Crowley's to get the turf installed. Joe said "mid June" when he came for the quote. When I had not heard from them in mid June, I called. The office got the installation scheduled for the next week, following up the same day I asked about it. As far as contractors go, that's pretty decent overall - one reminder call to get the job scheduled and they take care of it quickly. Great work. I'd use Crowley's again.
Description of Work: Joe and his team installed synthetic grass in my small yard in Brookline. The yard is small (less than 900 square ft total) with an odd layout for grass, between a curving walkway, flower beds and patio. And a huge tree root that sticks out of the ground that aesthetically should be surrounded by grass. Tough job, if you ask me.

They were absolutely fabulous. What impressed me was the timeliness of their work. They had a huge crew and got a lot of work done in two days. They were extremely efficient. The workers were very respectful. It was an amazing amount of work in just two days. That was all because they had such a large and efficient crew. I would definitely use them in the future.
Description of Work: I used Crowley's Concepts them in the last spring. They did the work in the end of June for landscaping and lawn and yard work. They placed cob of stones and in crushed stone in the front of our house and along the street that looks beautiful. They placed the lawn in the backyard. They moved some shrubbery.

I had Joe's team come out widen and install a new driveway with paving stones, level an area behind my deck and build a flagstone retaining wall, plus some clean up of my backyard which was beat up from other construction. This is our second big project completed at our residence by Crowley's and this (like the last one) exceeded expectations. By far the biggest job in this project was the driveway (roughly 20' by 27'). Joe had four trucks and a big crew (12-16 guys) out and got it done in two days. The team did an excellent job; they were very meticulous in every way from clean up to install. I found the team very accommodating when working with us as well. We had a few areas that required careful planning, e.g. how best to cut existing concrete right next to a brand new mahogany deck, where to place a small rock wall near our entrance, etc. In every way, the team took time to ensure it was done right. The best part was the property was left in perfect condition; we didn't have to do anything after they left. Bottom line, Crowley's does high quality work.

Ok, kind of a tough review because weather conditions had a lot to do with the challenges that Crowley faced. Loam laid, not graded to perfect spec (still suffer pooling) but executed on time. Hydroseeding completed, but heavy rains caused hydroseed washout to the pooling areas of the lawn. I know I wasn't the only customer to call about htis, and the responsiveness to this wasn't as I expected. I felt like I had to plead in order to get them to come back (which they did) to re-seed, but they did not hydroseed. Lawn looks pretty good today - they did respond to disease spots and sprayed when asked. They also called a few time to make sure I was following their watering protocol, and came (without wanring) to aerate the lawn, too. LIke I said - it was a tough year b/c of the weather...but the responsiveness could have been a little stronger. Price was high compare to competitive bids.

JOE: Great consultant to us in respect to geting the pricing to where we could agree and helping us choose the right materials for our project. Additioanlly, he was very clear with us about the extent of teh prep work, how his work was superior to other and what to look for in competitive bids. TEAM: Also great. They showed up on time, worked quickly, as quietly as possible, and were very professional in all regards. For hardscaping would use them again and recommend highly.

We bought a house that had been newly renovated, but the yard had been neglected for many years. Joe met with us after coming to the property for pictures and measurements, and helped us come up with a design to make the most of our somewhat small yard. We were completely clueless and he gave us some great ideas all while considering our needs (easy to maintain, curb appeal, and space for our dogs). I can't recommend him highly enough for working with us and not being pushy, and the final result definitely exceeded our expectations. We haven't stopped getting compliments from neighbors we didn't even know we had, and we will definitely use his services in the future for maintenance or upgrades down the line. He may not be the cheapest option, but the work is such high quality it is definitely worth it. We had great, professional service from Joe and every single person of the sometimes 8 person crew they had working to get the job done quickly (and done right).

I contracted with Crowley's Clippers in mid-May to perform the work described above while I was out of the country. When I returned home, the work hadn't been completed so I called Crowley's and was told that it had been raining most of the time I was away. Joe apologized for the delay and had a crew at my house in two days. Crowley's crew was spectacular and his crew worked tirelessly and hard to complete all the work in one day. His team was efficient and his crew chief checked with me all during the clean up process to make sure I was satisfied. I couldn't have asked for a better experience with a landscaping contractor. Joe Crowley even called me the day after to make sure I was completely satisfied. Now, that's what I call Service!
Description of Work: Yard clean up, raking leaves, weeding flower beds, trimming very tall hemlocks both in the yard and in front of the house, trimming yews along the driveway and adjacent to the front porch, trimming a holly bush in front of the house, removing branches and twigs in the yard, removing eight large limbs from a tall pine in the back of the house (snow and ice damage) and mowing and trimming the lawn in the yard and in front of the house.

Let me first say that I called 6 different landscapers to come to my house to give me estimates, out of those 6, only four came and walked around and took measurements, some even tried to tell me what I should do and didn't really want to hear what I had to say. So out of those 4 only one sent me an estimate, and that was Crowley Clippers. I called CC in April and explained to them what I wanted done. Which was a whole new back yard, new irrigation system, removal of some tree stumps, a lot of rocks, a huge pile of dirt, and clean up the existing garden beds. Joe came to the house the next day and I went over with him what I had planned. Everything that I suggested he said "no problem we can do it" he gave me his advice and told me what I should be aware of, given the fact that I was doing this lawn in the beginning of summer. We set a date, for May 20th and he showed up with his crew and had my yard down to the dirt in a matter of hours. Then they added new soil, new irragations system, cleaned everything....etc. The next day they came back and sprayed my new lawn in. I'm a very picky person and I know enough about gardening to not be taken advantage of, and I can say that I love my new lawn. I've called the company many times to ask them questions and I've always received an answer. I have even received phone calls making sure that I was happy with everything. I have recommended Crowleys Clippers to my neighbors, and I would to anyone else. Hands down. The only real bad thing was I should have had them do the front yard, so people could see what a great job they did.

They did the initial clean up and never returned to complete the contracted work. Each time I called they promised that it would be done the next week. This went on for several weeks. When I called (in June) and shared my frustration they sent the balance of my check back - with no call or contact. Very bad business attitude.
Description of Work: We continued to use this landscaper for two consecutive years because he did the original work after the house was built. This year we contracted for approximately $3000.00 for clean up and additional landscaping design work. We paid half up front on April 22.

I wanted to start local and called Crowley's for an estimate and received a call back the same day. The office staff are very courteous and friendly. Joe came to the house and gave a verbal estimate followed by a written estimate via mail. I appreciated the time he took to give me an education about lawn care and shrub pruning. I also learned Crowley's had been hired by the previous owners for the front walk and raised flower bed masonry. In his walk around the property, Joe noticed a couple of pavers out of place and put in a work order to have them fixed at no cost to us. Impressive customer service! When it came to the Spring cleaning, we had a Easter egg hunt for 20+ kids planned and when I called the office to see if we could schedule our clean-up beforehand, they were very accommodating despite a busy schedule. The crew that arrived worked seamlessly and were done within the estimated time Joe quoted. The yard looks amazing and we've already hired them again to clean up our private street's small traffic circle.

We had used Crowley's Clippers before and been pleased; this time we were not. We had gotten a written quote for a spring cleanup, weedblock plastic installation where needed, and addition of mulch where needed (the weedblock plastic was old and showed out from under the mulch, much of which was old and had gotten removed by weather, etc.). On June 11th I got someone on the phone and got a voice estimate, after leaving some unreturned phone calls. We received the written estimate 6 days later on June 17th. The quote was faxed back June 26th and after leaving several more voicemails to schedule a date for the work to ensure that the date would be when I was in town and was not entertaining, none of which were returned, I emailed them and got a return email on the same day, July 16th, saying the work would be done "sometime next week." I called several more times but never got a firm date and then the work was done without my knowledge while I was not there. The bush trimming was ok but some of the weeds just appeared to have been cut off instead of pulled out, and the mulch had not been spread down or the old black plastic sheeting replaced; in terms of the mulch the yard looked just as bare as before over the old plastic sheeting which you could see hadn't been replaced. When I called to complain about the mulch and sheeting I was told that the boss "didn't like to use" the weed blocking plastic and asked, "why would you quote me for a service you weren't going to do?" which was never satisfactorily answered. They had to go back a second time and install the mulch but never installed the weed blocking plastic, and did not tell us when they were going back a second time. They did not charge us for the second time to install the mulch and took the cost of the weed blocking plastic out of the quote but that was a waste of their time and ours. They said "we won't charge for the weedblock plastic," like it was a special service they were providing to us not to charge us for things that they didn't do. I also got a call from them asking about our bill after they went back and installed the mulch, when I had been waiting for them to tell me that the second part of the work was done (in order to make sure we would not be charged for the weedblocker and that the mulch had been spread down) before I paid the bill, but how was I to know when the mulch had been spread down, since they did not do the courtesy of informing us when the work was finished for the second time? Since they seemed to be fine with quoting us for work which they won't do, and don't answer their voicemail promptly, we are going to try a different lawncare specialist next time, which is unfortunate because previously they were relatively good at what they did and I think they are still very knowledgable about plants.

Mr. Crowley gave us a very detailed plan along with a computer diagram. He made suggestions about what planting would look good with the brick front and the over all style of the house. He was thorough and creative. The execution part also went well expect for a small delay in fixing a common convenient date for the job but it was nothing that put us off. We are perfectly happy with the work done and it made a huge difference to the overall look of the house. We did a comparison with another company and i thought their pricing was pretty competitive and we got a good value.

They were great to set up a quote with, and sent someone to the house to meet with us and look at the yard. They seemed professional and gave useful ideas on what to do or what not to do. They also sent a quote over for approval relatively quickly via email. There was a change to the quote (the homeowner decided they wanted to keep a tree for which a price for tree cutting had been quoted) that was never removed from the quote, but the change was confirmed via email by the company owner. Once the quote was approved, it was harder to get them on the phone to see when the date was for the actual yardwork. Several messages were left and not returned; one of them was returned and when they said the person who scheduled was at lunch and would call me back, it was not returned and I had to call the next day. However, they did show in the two-day window promised and did a good job of trimming and left a hanger on the door. Some of the weeds were not entirely pulled up by the roots and homeowner worries they may come back quickly. Some places where there was mulch on top of black plastic liner there is no more mulch. Overall the yard generally looks much nicer and neater and the bushes and trees are trimmed nicely.
Description of Work: Trimmed trees and bushes, weeded, did edging in yard area in suburban house.
