It took some time to schedule this job. We had an earlier estimate in March from another contractor, which was quite excessive. Also that contractor was not going to be available for some time. We initially contacted John in July to determine availability, and then followed up in September. He made time to come out in late September to evaluate the job needed, and then we set some tentative dates for his return. The job was completed in about 3 hours. John and his associate Matt were very neat, and made every effort to minimize the dust involved. The job did require that part of the popcorn ceiling be scraped and smoothed. We will have Matt return to complete the rest of the ceiling and painting for a modest additional cost.
Description of Work: Removed a patch of ceiling from bedroom that had been damaged by water due to the ice dams. He discovered a small area of insulation that was affected by mold, and replaced the insulation to that area and the surrounding area. The area was resealed and plastered. It was not necessary to replace the whole ceiling.

John was a very nice man - he seemed extremely busy with the winter and we originally called in August and he came by to see the job, explain what he would do and give a quote, and while he wasn't free until September, but it was worth the wait. He was able to leave his materials very early on a Friday morning to accommodate our schedule, and came on Monday to do the job, which he finished in about 6 hours. He taped up the room so no dust would get onto the landing, and asked if he should leave the room taped up for us, which was great since we painted later that week and didn't have to do it again ourselves. The plastering looks great - there are a few surface imperfections but that is to be expected and we could paint over. When I asked what grade sandpaper we should use to sand down the compound, he just gave us a sanding block, which was very considerate of him. Would definitely hire again.

He did a great job and he was neat as a pin. He came to the door, took off his shoes when he walked in and I figured, here is a neat person. He did a fabulous job. He was neat as could be. I had gotten an estimate from someone else and his price was reasonable. I have told others if they need a plasterer to contact him.

We took out some doorways and moved some lights and had multiple areas on our ceiling that needed a needed repair. We made an attempt to fix them but it was such a mess to deal with and didn't look very good. So instead we hired John again and are so happy we did! We used him in the past for an addition we needed done and he did a great job. Again this time the work looks great. He is very responsive, great to work with, always calls you back to confirm a day/time and is always on time and so pleasant. I would recommend him to everyone (and I have!).

John is friendly and professional. My house had water damage caused by ice dam. Some insulation and drywall were removed to dry out the damaged area. John came to my help. John answered my calls in a timely manner and gave me an estimate shortly after. Later he did an excellent job to put the insulation and drywall back. He also plastered all the holes. His price is reasonable. I will strongly recommend him.

This was the second job that we've had John do at our home, and we were just as happy with the results as with the first job. First John and Tim prepped the work area nicely to try and minimize the amount of dust/plaster that would end up in the finished area of our basement. And the work that was done in the storage room came out great. What were once lumpy bumpy walls that also had large holes in multiple areas became a nicely smoothed out surface that could easily be painted. The same went for the ceiling. The storage room also had some duct work and pipes in it, being a basement room, but John did a great job working around those and making everything look very neat and clean. The job was done as promised and on schedule. In addition, on the 2nd floor of our home, there was a hole left in the wall where there was once a whole-house fan switch. We spoke to John about it, thinking maybe he could get to it at another time, but he immediately took care of it for us and that came out great too (he once again matched the textured pattern of our existing wall). We were very pleased with the work that John did. We thought he charged us a very reasonable price for the amount of work that was done. He was responsive and made sure we were happy with the work he'd done once again. We would be happy to recommend him to anyone looking for a good plasterer.

I called John and we set up a time for him to look at the job. He came over and quoted us a price and said he could do the work the next week due to a cancellation. We really liked him right away and felt that his price was fair so we scheduled the work for the following Monday morning even though it was Thanksgiving week. We received a call from him on Friday afternoon letting us know that the job he was working on was running late and asked if he could come by a little later than scheduled on Monday and then finish a little later on Wednesday. That was agreeable to us. He called again on Monday morning to let us know he was on his way which was very considerate. He and his helper, TIm, arrived and quickly got to work and did an outstanding job. They were both very nice and easy to get along with, too. They worked hard and were very neat and careful not to track plaster through the house. We couldn't be more pleased. The room looks better than we imagined! They do very good work. Also during the course of the job, John left tools to help us strip the wallpaper in the room after they had left for the day so that the next day he could plaster any spots on the wall that were necessary. Even after John was finished, he let us use some of his tools so that we could sand and paint the room. How often does that happen? We were able to use his tools and return them to him at the end of the weekend. We have a very old house with lots of improvements to make and we intend to call on John Crichton when we are ready to work on our next project. We would recommend him highly to anyone who needs a plasterer that is very talented, professional, and a really nice guy. Thanks, John and Tim!
Description of Work: John repaired a living room wall and ceiling that was inside a closet that we removed. He also converted our popcorn ceiling into a regular smooth ceiling and repaired other smaller plastering areas damaged due to our roof leaking.

We had bad ice dams on our room in the winter of 2010/2011, and water soaked through our bedroom ceiling. We waited a few years to fix the interior due to needing a new roof, making sure that new roof didn't also leak during a bad winter, etc. John did a great job repairing the ceiling, it looks fantastic. Very responsive via phone and price was reasonable. Highly recommend.

John promptly returned my call and showed up on time to provide an estimate. After getting a few other estimates, I decided to hire John as he seemed the most knowledgeable. John predicted that fixing the plaster would take 3-4 days, and he finished in 3 days. The quality of work is excellent. It's like having a brand new room in my home, as the walls look so good. Both John and his employees were friendly and punctual, and for doing such a messy job, kept the mess completely contained in the room where the work was going on. I would definitely hire Crichton Plastering again, they did a great job.
Description of Work: I hired John Crichton Plastering to repair old and cracked plaster in my home. In the room needing work, the existing plaster had several layers of paint along with several large cracks, and in some places had started falling off the wall altogether. The ceiling needed new sheetrock, and there was also a newly built closet that needed plaster as well. An older closet in the room also required plaster.

We had a great experience working with John right from the moment we got in touch with him. He was communicative and responsive even when trying to figure out a time to come out and do the estimate of the work (note: at the time he provided the estimate, the wall insulation had not been installed yet, so he was giving us an estimate on the work based on what we believed the extent of the job to be). He promptly returned phone calls and if he said he'd call on a particular date to follow up, he always followed through. Our living room and dining room both have very uniquely textured walls, and John was only one of a couple of folks who would even consider trying to match the texture for the patches. He gave us a great price for the work and, knowing that we were needing to get the work done quickly, was able to fit us into his schedule. He came by on Tues., (16th), prepped the job by putting down paper to protect the floors and plastic to cover the windows, and then came back on the 17th to do the plastering. John and Tim did a great job with the plastering and with matching the patched parts of the wall to the existing texture of the wall, and for the walls that were smooth, those plastered patches looked great as well. They arrived early, finished the job on time, cleaned everything up, and even took care of a couple of cracks and patches on our walls that hadn't been part of the initial scope of work. And even though there were probably more holes made by the wall insulation company that we initially anticipated, John still stuck to the original price estimate. They did a great job and we will look forward to hiring him again for some additional work that we will need done in our basement and garage.
Description of Work: John plastered holes in all of our exterior walls that had been left when wall insulation was installed. He also fixed walls that had a textured plaster.

John returns calls and follows through as promised. I'd give him an A+ if I could, on that alone! If he says he'll call in three days, he does. If he says he'll show up at 7:30 in the morning, you can set your clock to it. He also does good work, cleans up, and explains things well. He did my repair work for $50 less than he originally quoted and did it in less time than estimated. What's not to like?

John was extremely professional. He called me back right away and was very good about communicating when and what he could do and how much it would cost. He showed great attention to detail and thought carefully about how to preserve the character of the cottage in the repairs. I'm very pleased with the work, and even more pleased that he was able to do it for less than he originally thought it would cost. I highly recommend him to anyone needing help with this kind of repair work.

John was very responsive. He was able to get out quickly for the estimate, and even started cutting into the wall to diagnose the problem. We agreed on price and he was able to schedule the work appointment on site during the estimate. He was unable to make the original time, but called well in advance and worked with me to select a new date/time. John was very professional in his approach to taping off the work area to minimize dust/debris. He corrected both the wall and the ceiling and finished them to match the rest of the surrounding areas. Because carpentry was required after the plastering, John even offered to come back after the finishing if there were any slight corrections that were required once the molding was completed. Great job and would absolutely call him again in the future for any plastering work I need done.

John was fantastic from the get-go. He replied promptly to our inquiry, came out to give an estimate on the day requested, and didn't mess around with trying to decide if the job was too small for him to do, as another plasterer had done with us. The day he was scheduled to come and do the job with his assistant, Tim (also excellent), he was prompt (well, ten minute late due to traffic, and he was very apologetic for that) and got to work right away. Our rooms were prepped completely, the plaster work was done without delay, and the clean-up was thorough. Looking at it today, you can no longer see where the water damage was, and our walls look great where the cracks were filled. John stands behind his work, and we'd hire him again in a minute, as well as recommend him to our friends.

I have never dealt with plaster so this was a new experience for me. John gave me an estimate for the work and we arranged the day for him to perform the job. He estimated that the job would take two days. John arrived the first morning and installed the blueboard and taped the seams. The work area was covered with plastic tarps. The area was cleaned up at the end of the day. On the second day the plaster was applied to the blueboard. The area was cleaned up at the end of the day and the job was completed. As I write this review, the plaster is still curing. The ceiling is smooth and level. If there are any changes to my review, I will update it as necessary. I plan to paint the room in the near future. There will be some preparation work to do before the painting can be done. I would use John again for any other plastering work. I was satisfied with the outcome of the job.
Description of Work: John plastered two ceilings in my home. The existing plaster was "horse hair plaster" and would not be able to be simply coated with a skim coat of plaster. (The previous owner of the house had some cosmetic patches made to some cracks, but the material peeled.) John installed new blue board and plastered the the two ceilings.

First, John is an extremely nice man. The scope of the job was originally much greater, but I wanted to see his work before committing to the larger job. He told me that he based his price on $600 for an eight hour day and then gave me a price of $1,000 for the limited work. I supplied the materials. He worked 5 hours the first day and completed the job in 5 hours on the second day - 10 hours altogether and charged $1,000, instead of $750, based on $600/8 hour day. But that wasn't the problem with this plasterer. Because he did not know what he was doing, most of the job had to be ripped out and redone before tiling. He installed Durock with blueboard screws, all of which had to be removed and replaced, left huge and uneven gaps between the pieces of Durock, and didn't glue down the Durock floors. He also told me that a small missing piece of sub floor could be fixed by using two layers of Durock: that part of the floor was not solid and tile would have cracked as soon as weight was put on it. Save your money and have the work done correctly in the first place.
Description of Work: Installed some blue board and Durarock and applied a small amount of plaster.

Response from John Crichton Plastering
I appreciate that he said I was a nice man, but I don't feel this review is entirely fair. I quoted 600/day for labor to blue board, cement board and plaster the walls and ceiling in two bathrooms. I ended up doing all of that PLUS the floors (which he clearly was not happy with) AND patched cracks and holes around the house where it was needed. I worked two days and supplied the plaster and some other materials to do the job and though I worked 2 days, I only charged him 1000.00. As a plasterer, I don't often do floors, but took them on to help him out. That was clearly a mistake. I hope those reading this will take into consideration all of my other reviews. I have won the Super Service Award every year since 2002 and I pride myself on good work. Thank you for reading my response.

We had a very large hole in our ceiling which we had to make in order to fix a leak from our shower in the room above. Once our shower was fixed, we needed someone to come in and fix the hole that we had made! We were worried about finding someone for such a small job. The size of the hole was approximately 4 ft by 5ft. I called John up and he came over exactly when he said he would, he looked at our problem and said he'd be happy to fix it! He came to fix it, hung plastic all around the space to minimize any dust and did a fantastic job with our ceiling! Our ceiling plaster wasn't smooth and he was wonderful about matching the look of the patched plaster to the existing ceiling, not a simple task!
