Description of Work: Boston Standard did an excellent job in helping six top-floor condo owners replace rooftop HVAC at a 17-year-old building in Boston. All six condos own HVAC units on the roof, rather than in the individual condo units. We knew that our “package” HVAC units were beyond expected life; we also knew that it would be expensive (at least $9,000) for an individual condo to replace its HVAC by itself – due to crane costs, other charges and lack of discounts. So, despite the risk of waiting, the owners banded together. We figured out what we needed, interviewed and collected bids from 5 suppliers. We narrowed the list to 2 contractors and worked with them individually to be sure we were comparing apples and apples. In the end, as a group, we found better pricing (approx. $45 thousand to start), plus service benefits and volume discounts. For us, we really benefited from getting organized, understanding what we needed, asking lots of questions and being clear about our expectations. The effort was worth it. Throughout the process, Boston Standard worked with us to understand options on equipment, installation, and maintenance – and, as the process moved along, they updated their offer to accommodate a few changes. Boston Standard was able to give us a bid for all six units as a package and then split out the costs for individual owners, including financing. After we accepted their bid, they removed our old HVAC units, delivered and installed all six new HVAC units in one day, approximately 3 weeks after ordering. The installation process went very smoothly – one minor issue was fixed immediately and very satisfactorily. We will be using them for service as well.

Description of Work: We had both a furnace and central air system replaced and had three companies come out to review and quote. Boston Standard was by far the best in every way! They spent two hours assessing our needs - really helping us understand what we were buying. Their quote was not the cheapest but it was very reasonable and for what they ultimately delivered, very fair. The jobs were not easy - old house and small spaces - but they did a great job and even did a follow up call to make sure we were happy. They were a pleasure to work with and I would highly recommend them!

I am sorry that you are left feeling as though our services deserve an F rating, but also confused since you saw two of our technicians grabbing dinner at a restaurant the night after your work was completed and sent them a round of beers as a thanks for a job well done. While it did take a couple of appointments to get your sink centered on the stand, we did return and make the repair as you requested. When the sink was first installed our technician had you review it and you approved the work, only to realize later that the emblem on the interior of the sink did not line up to the faucet. When you called and asked us to come back and realign the sink we did, at no charge because we also felt that it should have lined up perfectly the first time and, like you, did not notice at first glance that it did not. Our goal is to complete every job perfectly the first time and I apologize that this was not the case with the alignment of your sink during the installation. Best wishes, Laura Wood

Description of Work: Best Sales process for the vendors I contacted. Leo was very personable and professional. Their office staff were excellent as well, we just were not totally satisfied with the installers and the condition in which they left our home. | |After drawing the company's attention to the issues left behind by the installers, we received an apologetic call and an offer to have a cleaning crew sent out, but then we had already sanitized the filth left behind... in our bathroom and swept portions of the work area. I would probably give them a B+, my wife would probably say C+, so we will call it a B.

Description of Work: Boston Standard does not provide the 24 hour service they advertise nor are they "The company you count on", because they do not stand behind their work. A shower handle which they had installed for us a year and a half earlier came off the shower valve one night in March, and we couldn't turn the water off. We called them immediately, since they had installed the handle and because they advertise 24 hour service. We were told the night technician would come that evening, but in a subsequent phone call we were told there was no technician on call that night. The answering service said someone would come the next morning. The water ran in the shower all night. When we called at 7 a.m. we were told the schedule was full for two days, and they advised us to find another plumber, which we did. I spoke with the owner of Boston Standard later and asked him why they hadn't helped us, since this was an emergency resulting from a shower handle which they had installed for us. He told me they had no responsibility for the shower parts, because we had supplied the shower trim kit rather than purchasing it from them. Two points: 1) The shower handle did not break, it came off the shower valve in the wall, because the Boston Standard technician had clearly not installed it adequately. 2) We supplied the shower trim kit because I had been advised in writing by a Boston Standard technician to purchase it myself: "Recommend customer supplied fixture." I was not told they had no responsibility for it if not purchased through them. Even more disturbing, the owner told me there are notes in our 'account' with them to the effect that we are 'undesirable' clients, because we had complained to them before. I complained when they installed the shower trim kit and billed us $220, because I had been quoted in writing: "Install CS ['customer supplied'].shower trim $75-125". I threatened to write a negative review for Angie's List at that time, so they gave me a partial refund. I did not write a negative review then, but I am compelled to write one now: Boston Standard does not provide 24 hour service as advertised, and they obviously make no effort to provide service to customers who have previously voiced legitimate objections about their work and want to provide Angie's List with honest reviews.

Description of Work: We had used Boston Standard before and contacted them to check out a severely clogged toilet. After they solved the problem, we discussed the option of replacing the toilet. It's an old toilet in a house built in the 1930s, so they warned me that when they replace it, they could find further issues. |The technicians were very helpful in explaining the problem, giving me options, and allowing me time to consider. I purchased the service plan, which has already saved us a lot of money (and induced me to go ahead with replacing the toilet). They gave me the name of their plumbing supplier, who sold us a very good and very inexpensive toilet. The installation was very reasonable. |When they installed the new toilet, they explained that we need more work on the pipe underneath, which is old and corroded, and in a space that is not insulated. |We are now assessing whether to go ahead with roughly $2000 worth of additional work on the pipes (6-8 hours). They have been very good at giving us information, and did not pressure us at all.

Description of Work: They installed a high velocity HVAC system in a two story Victorian condo. Do to scheduling conflicts they started a month late. While all of the people at Boston Standard we worked with were very professional and courteous, there were enough little things to prevent them getting an A. The subcontractors they used for removing our old radiators-J&S Landscape and Removals-cracked one of our walls, scraped several stairs, shattered one of our waste water pipes in the basement, and cut through our downstairs neighbors' radiator pipes while trying to remove ours. | |I had to have BP come back several times for final touches-missing vent covers; poorly taped fittings; low refrigerant in the A/C. They did not charge for any of this work, and even offered to re-space the vents in one room to be more to our liking at no cost. | |One of the great things BP is now doing is a final check-in with customers after the system has been running a few weeks. They listened to all our concerns, answered all our questions, and mostly followed up with all our requests. That went a long way to us both being satisfied with their work and making sure the little problems that arise after use are taken care of at no charge. | |Throughout, they always treated us with respect and took as much time as we needed to make sure we understood what they were doing, and they understood what we wanted.

He is very professional, right down to the booties he wears over his boots so that he doesn't track in dirt. Also, put down a rug runner on the floor so as not to damage it. I swear it was cleaner when he left than it was when he arrived. Now this old, run down bathroom with bad pipes is wonderfully new again! This is truly a professional, honest company you can depend on. Since then, have recommended him to several friends and colleagues.
Description of Work: new toilet and sink installed in a very old bathroom. Joe worked with me on getting the right toilet and sink for this particular bathroom.
