A young man came and he couldn’t do the work I needed. I asked if they could do some other work instead He didn’t have the authority to do anything besides what was listed in the deal so I just ended up not having any work done.

Jeff arrived on time and was friendly and professional. He walked me through a number of components of the system, and added helpful labels so we know where things are. He changed a filter, and suggested better options if we decide to upgrade in the future, but did not push anything on us. He was happy to take a look at a toilet that was leaking (just needed to be tightened up!) and the garbage disposal. We'll definitely go with Boston Standard again, for both regular maintenance and anything else that comes up.
Description of Work: The HVAC system was inspected, air conditioner regular service performed, and other plumbing fixures were inspected as well.

Marc ( I think this was his name) arrived exactly on time. He was polite and very curteous. Not at all pushy and very professional. He first did a little advertising for the company's annual plan and then did the toilet tune up. The toilet had been leaking for 6 month and he fixed the problem by replacing the valve. However the handle for the flush was very corroded and broke while Marc was working on the toilet tank. He gave me a price for replacing the handle. I told him I will first try to fix it myself, so he showed me how to do it correctly. After that I showed him couple thing around the house and got pricing. I can see why the company gets high ratings. They show up on time, are very professional, friendly and do a good job. But their prices are quiet high (if it is was not for the 5-point tune up special the toilet would still be leaking!). I think this is a general issue with plumbing work. I am not sure why plumbers charge so much for labor.

Marilou took my call this morning. She was very pleasant and professional. She gave me options for times a technician could come out today. She let me know Tom would be coming and told me a little something about him. Tom came at exactly 10am as was scheduled. He was also very pleasant and professional. He even put covers over his shoes so as not to track in anything from the outside. Tom went over my options and did not try to up-sell me on anything. He even went out and got parts that he didn't have, came back very quickly and finished the job by noon. I am very impressed and very pleased with Boston Standard. I highly recommend them and will most definitely do business with them in the future!

The projet went very well. Boston Standard made an appointment to look at the project, came on time. and provided the estimate promptly. There price was very reasonable, considerably less than other firms we had estimates from. They were able to provide references and when we selected them to do the project they cam back a couple of times to nail down the details. The project was completed successfully - they kept track of all the moving parts (there were many!) and got it done. The project was done in the spring and they proactively scheduled a visit in the fall before the heating season began to verify that everything was as it should be.. We have had them back a couple of times since then to answer questions. Everyone that we have dealt with has been very professional and friendly from Mary Lou in the office to all of the technical folks that come do do the work. They are always punctual and communicate well - calling to let you know when they are on their way (within the 2 hours window that they schedule). This reliability alone is so great.
Description of Work: We had Boston Standard replace our boiler and hot water heater in a 4 unit building. it was a complicated project because the items were on the top floor of the building on Beacon Hill where there is no parking and little room to maneuver. In addition, the utility closet itself was in a narrow space adding to the difficulty.

Prompt, professional, excellent at explaining everything, and very pleasant to deal with.
Description of Work: They were very profession and great to deal with. I decided to go with Boston Standard Plumbing because of the deal they ran for a water heater flush and walkthrough. When I spoke with Mary Lou to set up the appointment she was very friendly. There was a glitch the first time around. Somehow, Mary Lou did not actually schedule me for the time slot we had agreed on. When I called back, she was apologetic and kept assuring me that her mistake did not reflect the company's usual approach. We rescheduled, and this time Mary Lou was great about calling to let me know that the job ahead of mine had gone long. She gave me an estimated time of completion and said someone would be in touch once the job was done. Mark arrived when he said he would, was very professional, and was patient with my questions. I'm a relatively new homeowner, and my understanding of heating and plumbing is pretty much nonexistent. He catalogued the things that were good about the sink, toilet, shower, etc. and recommended two things for me to keep an eye on--a fill valve in the toilet and a coil cleaning for my HVAC. He was very low-key and did not try to pressure me into getting any of this work done. He flushed the water heater and cleaned up afterwards. All in all, Boston Standard Plumbing was very good. I would definitely go back to them.

We had a leak in one of the master pipes in our triple decker. Boston Standard came out, did a thorough check gave an estimate and scheduled a return for the next day. They arrived early, found a way to fix the problem for less than estimate. Once the issue was fixed they gave detailed instructions on how to avoid the issue in the future.

Mark arrived at the scheduled time and examined the existing thermostat. After a short period of time he provided an estimate for the work that was needed and asked if I would like to proceed with the work. After I agreed, the thermostat was installed and Mark made sure that it started the furnace when necessary. The work was done quickly and efficiently. I will use this company again.

Overall, I have to say it appeared that Tom really didn't care about me as a customer. I told him who I was when I called on Saturday, told him all the issues and that I needed it replaced, and before we hung up after scheduling the install, he said "what was your name again?" He didn't have any info about what was quoted, and acted like he didn't even remember having the conversation w/me when he was at my house. The company's lack of responsiveness and lack of regard for my time and situation has convinced me to find another plumber to do the work. I really don't know how they managed to become a top service rated company on Angies List. I'm very disappointed!
Description of Work: I hired Boston Standard Plumbing to come and do a Water Heater flush and inspection of all the plumbing in my house, as part of an Angie's List promotion they were running. I had noticed that the hot water was starting to run with a slight yellow tint, and that's why I contracted for this service. The service person Tom, showed up at the agreed upon time, Dec. 30, and proceeded to do the inspection. He "flushed" my water heater, and looked at my shower valve, as I have had to turn the water heater all the way up, in order to get a warm shower in the bathroom upstairs. Tom explained that because the water heater had the heat all the way up for several years, it burned it out faster than usual. I accepted this, as it was 7 years old. He indicated that my shower valve must be rebuilt to get the mix of hot/cold correct, so that the new water heater would not have to be all the way up. He asked how the washing machine was working, and I indicated I've been getting yellow spots on clothes for years. He asked how the dishwasher was working, and said he was surprised that it wasn' having problems, considering the hot water heater. He provided a quote to do all ($2800 for the shower valve rebuild, and vented water heater), and left after flushing the water heater. After he left, the hot water ran even more yellow than ever, and in less than 2 weeks the dishwasher broke. I was no longer able to do laundry, wash dishes or shower. I called Boston Standard back on Jan. 10, and expressed the urgency to proceed with the work as estimated ASAP, and inquired about a quote for a tankless system, which I learned was available on their website, not from Tom. On Saturday, Jan. 14, and called back again. Tom answered the phone, and I expressed my frustration that he could not even give me a courtesy of a return call when I called 4 days earlier. He said "sorry - that's my fault". I asked him if he sabotaged my dishwasher when he flushed the water heater?! I asked him about a tankless system, and he said it would be $4K-$5K to install it, and that a change to the gas line might be required, etc. I said forget it-- I wasn't going to pay that amount of money, and I just need to get the hot water heater replaced now! He said they could do it Monday.

Dear Member, I can understand your frustration with Tom and Boston Standard, and you can imagine that I'd like to have had your business and a good review vs a bad Angie's List score and no business! In Tom's defense, which isn't a full excuse, he is expecting his first baby any day now and I know his mind has been elsewhere. We have gone back and forth between whether or not we should use an answering service or keep the guys on the phones, and in situations like this, it leans towards an answering service. I apologize for the inconvenience to you and would like you to know that we do all try hard, and usually do a stellar job. I think Tom's lack of attention is not the norm, and I'd happily credit the $79 that you paid towards any future work, if you were to give us the chance.. I'm beginning a new kitchen remodeling project. As part of it, I need to move some plumbing around - moving a washing machine hookup, replacing a radiator, and doing some repair work. In all, it's a not-insignificant project. So last week, I called Boston Standard to have them come out and give me an estimate. They told me about the $30 service call fee; I found it a bit odd that they would charge just for estimates, but decided to go ahead and have them come out anyway. Given that it was the holidays, they couldn't make an appointment until today, Wed 12/28. I found that perfectly reasonable, so we made an appointment from 8-10am this morning. Well, this morning rolls around, and I'm ready to go. I've planned to go in to work late, and I'm waiting at home. And waiting, and waiting, and waiting. Before you know it, it's 10am, and I can wait no longer. No one from Boston Standard ever showed up, nor did anyone call me to indicate that they were running late or couldn't make it. So I left, because I have a job, and (unlike Boston Standard apparently) I can't just not show up. This was deeply unprofessional on the part of Boston Standard, not to mention inconsiderate. You can be sure that I will never call them again.
Description of Work: No services were performed. They never even showed up!

I called Boston Standard the morning I found water leaking from somewhere in my kitchen into the apartment/kitchen below. By 3:30 in the afternoon, Jeff from Boston Standard was at my door, ready to assess the problem and fix it. My phone call was answered right away by a real (and very nice) person who understood the issue and worked to find me an available time slot that afternoon. Jeff came right on time, spent time assessing the issue, found the leak that I had been unable to find, and fixed it. The cost was higher than I expected but worth the result in this case. There is a $29 assessment fee for coming out to the house to take a look. This was explained to me on the phone before he came out, however, and Jeff very clearly laid out the costs of the job at hand and my options. I also purchased a Service Contract for $150.00 after which the $29 fee was waived and 10% taken off the bill. There was also a $25 discount coupon for Angie's list. I was happy with the prompt, efficient, and effective service and will hire them again in the future.

They were available on fairly short notice and communicated well about arrival time. The telephone staff was very friendly and the service tech was professional. But they are super-expensive and the prices seem to be arbitrarily set. I asked on the phone for a ball-park estimate for routine AC maintenance and was quoted "around $200." The total charged (including non-refundable $30 trip charge) was twice that. And there's no pricing sheet or apparent reason for the pricing. The service tech just makes it up on the spot based on his estimation of the difficulty of the work. That's nice in that it allows for some predictability (you can decide not to hire him and be out only $30), but it defeats the purpose when you're going to predictably pay too much. (And I'm pretty sure the $30 charge is designed to motivate you to let them do the work, even though you know it's overpriced.) Having worked with a few different companies since then, I'd say the work should have cost no more than $300 at the high end.

I noticed a leaking drain in my cellar that was connected to the first floor bathroom. I reviewed Angie's List for plumbing and found good reports for Boston Standard . I called them to set up an appointment/estimate for that repair, replacement of two outside faucets with new ball valves, removal and replacement of two bathroom faucets(supplied) and a stack pipe replacement that was broken. I called and they told me it would take 3 days to look at it. That was fine with me because I have 2 bathrooms and it was just a drain, and the other work was just stuff that I let slide. I shut that toilet down. Tom from the company came at the date and time scheduled. He looked at the toilet and pipes and gave me an estimate to pull and reset the toilet. and do the other work. I gave him the OK to do the work. It came out perfect. I then asked him to do rebuild a shower valve that was leaking because of the great work that he and his partner already finished. I am really happy with the work they did and would use them for all my work. They also repaired a toilet and gave me a new shower head.
Description of Work: 1) Reset toilet due to leaking problem. 2) Remove and install 2 frost free hose faucets with new ball shutoffs. 3) Remove and install 2 lavatory faucets (supplied). 4 Rebuild 1 shower valve. 5) Repair 1 PVC Stack that was broken from a fallen tree.

I am so pleased with Boston Standard! Brad showed up right at noon for his 12-2 estimated arrival time. He was professional, courteous and was able to determine the cause of our problem in no time. Within 1/2 hour, our disposal had been replaced. He removed our old one, used a blanket to control any mess and double checked everything before he left. He even took 20 extra minutes to help me fish my husband's razor out of our bathtub drain! Without a doubt, I have found my new plumbing company. And I will recommend them to anyone!
Description of Work: We were having problems with leaking under our kitchen sink any time the disposal or dishwasher was in use. It was determined that our disposal was corroded and needed to be replaced. The disposal was replaced within 1/2 hour. Our bathtub drain was also running slow due to a razor that had been accidentally dropped down the drain. The razor was fished out and the tub now drains normally.

When I received the call with the est I expressed my displeasure with the price and that I was not made aware of the flat rate ahead of time. I paid the service charge and I asked them to leave my home.
Description of Work: I was not made aware of the flat rate that Boston Standard Plumbing and Heating charges when I called to schedule and appointment. The $29.95 was the service charge that was discussed before that appointment . At the time of the appointment the estimate to change 2 customer provided faucets was $325.85 each , replace toliet emergency shut off, and pull and rest toilet came to a grand total of $1284. 85.

I was able to reach someone immediately. The earliest someone could come to do the work was five days from the call. There is a $29 charge for the visit regardless if any work is done and the estimate given to me over the phone was $200. I told them that I would keep looking for another plumber who can come sooner and I would cancel if I found someone else to do the job. The gentleman told me that he will not schedule the job and if I didn't find someone else to give him a call back, which was totally reasonable. I did find someone else that only charged $100 for the job and arrived the day after I called.

This was my first time using Angie's list and after reading many reports decided on Boston Standard. I am a female, senior citizen who needed to have work done on an inherited house more than 40 miles away from my home. Mary Lou was my first contact and thus my first impression of this company came from her. She listened to all my needs and then very clearly explained how everything would be handled. I found the technician to be punctual, professional, polite and willing to listen. I inquired about a service contract since the one I had with the Gas company was due to expire and the renewal ( due to a buy out) would no longer be managed by them. Everything was put in writing showing me exactly how much each job would cost with and without the contract. ( I decided that for my circumstances a contract would give me the peace of mind I desired). The technician explained that, due to the time needed to measure and drill through the two kitchen cabinets and install the water line for the new refrigerator, he would only be able to attend to the remove and installation of the stoves that day. He took the time to remove all the wrappings from inside the new range before he put it in place, even though we were unable to plug it in due to the old electrical receptacles. He made sure that the black scuff marks on the floor, created from moving the stoves, were removed. The Second technician was also punctual, professional and polite. I had him re-pipe the basement sink in addition to the installation of the new water line. They have suggested that I replace the old, 30 gallon, water heater tank with a new, 40 gallon tank ($1,438.31 with the contract) as a preemptive move since my intention is to rent the house. It was also suggested that I have the old heating system cleaned. Both these suggestions certainly do have merit. Overall, I found this to be a company that knows the importance and true value of "Customer Service" and does quality work.
Description of Work: Removed old gas stove and installed a new gas range with a flexable line. Install ice maker line for refrigerator. Re-pipe drain pipe for basement sink.
