My gas water heater was leaking and starting to get a bit old... so I needed a replacement. Boston Standard gave me an estimate after emailing them a few photos of my existing setup, and came out to replace it the next morning. Their estimate came in lower than another company I looked at by a fair amount. They also gave me a discount on a scratched water heater they had on hand that another customer rejected. The were prompt, professional, and got the job done quickly. I will absolutely hire them again for my plumbing needs.

The team at Boston Standard is great - very customer oriented. They always answer the phone, are polite and actually care about helping to resolve your problems, especially if you have a service plan! My repairman showed up on time and completed work within an hour to rebuilt the inside of my shower. He showed me the broken parts, had me test the shower when done and provided info on the warranty - 3 years! This is my 4th or 5th experience with smaller jobs and i have always been happy. With them you will have the peace of mind that your work will be done on time, with professionalism and a positive attitude by someone who knows what they are doing. If you are very budget conscious and want to spend as little as possible and like to take risks in whether someone may show up to get a deal, then i would not recommend Boston Standard, but if you want solid/reliable service and good work done then i would highly recommend.

From placing my initial phone call to signing the check I was extremely impressed with Joanie, who answered the call and JT and Jose, who replaced my old water heater. It took less than 24 hours to get my new water heater up and running from the moment I called them. Highly professional, efficient, and kind. They gave us early appointment the day after our burst/pipe flood. Arrived promptly (after calling to give us precise time of arrival. The team (Brandon and Bill) were impressive from start to finish, figuring the exact price in advance and staying until we were all satisfied that the system was functioning well again. Brandon and Bill were professional, knowledgeable, efficient, and unusually personable and friendly—explaining as they went along and patiently answering our many questions. Bottom line: excellent work, a reasonable price, and two very nice (as well as expert) young men. We have several future projects in mind for Boston Standard. Barbara Cowley and Joe Kerner .
Description of Work: Repair burst heating pipe; drain, refill, and purge water lines, install new thermostat, and made sure the whole system (two zones) was working properly.

Had 2 forced hot air systems checked/inspected. One system had a failed pump which the service tech replaced on the spot- also swapped out air filter since I had in hand. Technician was friendly and thorough with job.

TJ was friendly and professional and stayed until the issue was resolved. I would recommend using Boston Standard based on my experience with TJ.
Description of Work: My brand new HVAC unit would run but not produce cool air. After having three other HVAC experts out to troubleshoot I finally called Boston Standard. They identified the issue, fixed the problem and stayed until the unit was producing cold air. I wish I had called them sooner before wasting so much time and money on the other vendors who were unable to identify the issue (but still charged me lots of money).

Have used Boston Standard for two jobs. They have great customer service. 1) purchased their AC Tuneup special on Angie's list. Was able to get a tech to come out the following week. I have a tricky unit, it's up in the attic in a small crawl space with a lot of flexible ducts. Their tech climbed up there to service the unit and moved some of the ducts to increase air flow. They even cleared away some of the vines and leaves that had become trapped around the compressor outside. When they were finished the tech explained everything to me including the age of our system and related problems. When I mentioned we had some plumbing work as well, she took pics of the work and got us estimates. 2) Plumbing work: Hot water heater was leaking (faulty temp and pressure release valve) and called in some emergency work on a Sunday evening. The tech was there in an hour and promptly fixed the issue. I definitely recommend them. They do cost more than some other places, but having used them now I don't think I'd hire anyone else. High marks for their professionalism and customer service.

I called and was able to get an appointment two days later for my AC system that was not working. The office person was very nice and helpful. The technician was able to diagnose my issue after about an hour and ran out to get me the part so it would work the same night. The cost was a bit more than I had anticipated, but the service was very professional and I understand that the recharging of the system can be expensive. I will be using them again next week to replace my sink, so hopefully the experience is good again.

Service reps on the whole were very polite. That said, they replaced two parts that likely did not need replacing - a capacater and a pound of refrigerant. Paid close to $1000 for this. Problem still not solved. So, then they sent someone over a third time - only for them to tell me when they arrived that they could not address the problem unless the system was exhibiting it (shutting on and off) at the time of the visit. If they had informed me of this prior to the appointment, I could have turned the system on hours in advance to allow for this. I called to schedule another appointment. The person who answered the phone said that there was nothing they could do for me. I hung up. Called back and asked to speak with the owner. The business manager called me back and offered to help. After much conversation - and clarity that the problem had to be exhibiting when they visited - we set an appointment for the following day at 2-4pm. So, I stayed home from work AGAIN, and no one showed. They were under the impression that I was going to email them again to confirm that the problem still existed. Why in the world would I have to do that?? So, then they offered to send someone over after 4pm at higher, after hours rates. Really?? Thank goodness I was able to get in touch with another HVAC company that came over that same evening, correctly diagnosed the problem - without suggesting yet another part replacement - and fixed the problem. What they should have done in the first place, before the first visit, was to tell me that my system needed to be exhibiting the problem during their visit so that I could have been prepared, started the system in advance, and not wasted a significant amount of my time and money.

This is the second time I hired Boston Standard and both experiences were negative. The first time I needed help aligning the sing drains for a new bathroom vanity. They "needed" 2 guys to do this and it was costly, for no apparent reason. Most recently, I had the following items done, but each was done unprofessionally: 1. Install Whole House Water Filtration System- The unit they installed was UNDERSIZED for the house and my water pressure dropped considerably. 2. Install Outside Spigot - They connected the outside spigot line to the water line entering the house, WITHOUT a shut off. If it freezes, as sometimes happens in New England, I will have no water in the building. 3. Install Basement Sink - the plumbing was just lazy, coming from two difference places. The plumber insisted that the only way to install it was to cut the main drain stack to install the drain. I asked for an injection pump but he insisted the drain stack would not move. I market the pipe and the wall with pen to double check. It did move, shifting to the right. 4. Maintenance of a hot water and a steam heating systems - The hot water system looks fine, but they clearly broke something on the steam system and tried to repair it because now it has a new copper line that leaks and shoots steam out. I will never use them again. Shame on me for trying them as second time.

Finally a great company you can rely on to get the job done! I have used them for my multi-family home for years and have always been so happy to have this wonderful team of people to help me out. From Joanie in the office to all the great plumbers, Brandon, TJ, Kyle, Jorge to name a few they are all so professional, friendly and knowledgeable. They are easy to work with, they call you 1/2 hour prior to arrival, cover their boots when they are in your home and have a low monthly charge for their service plan, which is worth every penny. Brandon has been out the most and he is a wealth of knowledge. He had so many issues to figure out this go around and he found all the issues in a methodical way. He's straight up trustworthy too. One leak was from the tenants toilet and needed a new flange and was pulled and set, and an old cast iron pipe cut and replaced with new pvc drain line. Another leak was from an old laundry valve which left a lot of water in the basement who knew?! An old shower valve was causing the rattle and was replaced. Lastly the for the other toilet problem, he suggested I buy a toilet and he would install it saving me hundreds of dollars! He even gave me the brands that he liked for toilets. Brandon even checked my furnace, gave me some suggestions and gave me a quote on the water heaters that are close to replacement. It was like having a family member checking to make sure everything was okay in the house! Thank you to Boston Standard for all the hard work!
Description of Work: I had multiple issues! Four to be exact. A leak from somewhere in the basement, a tenants toilet leak, shower valve rattle and another problematic toilet.

I have been using these guys for several years now for plumbing, heating, and A/C. I just had another visit with them for annual maintenance/cleaning (FREE as part of my service plan). As always, the technician was friendly, eager to share her knowledge, super careful of our schedules and impact on the condo, appropriately communicative and best of all went above and beyond the call of duty by repairing without additional charge some wiring that had gone astray (costing her an extra half hour on site). Loved her! Boston Standard has not let me down yet -- pretty expensive but so worth it. Completely free of the contractor hassles people are always complaining about. And that goes for the office staff, too!

First visit was to diagnose the source of a leak that was causing water damage to a first floor ceiling. Boston Standard's plumbers did a pretty perfunctory inspection, declared that the leak was coming from the dishwasher on the second floor, and presented a bill of $320. They did this without looking at the dishwasher itself or figuring out where specifically the leak originated -- a supply line? a drain line? a broken connection? a cracked tub? The time and effort they put in did not justify the cost. The second visit was weeks later, after a new dishwasher had been installed and the leak restarted. This time the plumber was relatively efficient, figured out the problem, and fixed it on an emergency basis. The cost was in line with the amount of work he did (given that it was a Saturday morning). When I raised questions about the first bill, the owner wouldn't budge, but he was courteous and rational about it. I'm not sure I'd use them again, given the mediocre service and fairly high prices, but I've come across far worse.

Our fist visit to your home correctly diagnosed a bad dishwasher and the tech quoted you to install a new dishwasher in order to rectify the leaking. I am sorry that the other plumbing company who you choose to install the dishwasher made a bad connection at the water line and the new unit leaked after the installation. It is always a bummer to have to call a plumber out, but I am glad to hear that the technician was able to repair the new dishwasher connection to the water line over the weekend. I am sorry that you feel our service was mediocre, as we correctly diagnosed the issue, provided you with a quote to fix it and came out on the weekend to fix the issue caused by another plumbing company. Jose was out Monday to perform annual maintenance. His attention to detail was amazing. I never saw such a complete maintenance job. As you know he was out before consulting on our need for a 3rd return. we discussed it again and he recommended to add it to the 2nd floor rather the first as we originally thought. He gave us an estimate and was able to do it immediately. I was incredibly impressed at how he worked so careful and considerate. Again his attention to detail and craftsmanship would make most finish carpenters jealous. In the end we had a new return on the 2nd floor. When the system runs now it run 12 db quieter overall (he even was able to turn the fan from medium to high) and when I turn the thermostat from 65 to 70 it takes the ambient room temperature to 70 in 5 minutes versus 20 minutes with 2 returns. I know when A/C season starts we will see even more improvement. I've used Boston Standard for a few projects in my home now including a mini-split ductless system for my office space, a tankless water heater and a whole house humidifer. Their advice and installation on all of these was flawless! Definitely check this out

They cancelled less than 4 hours before appointment.
Description of Work: I called on 1/5/18 at 2:56 PM because I had tenant with heat that would only get to about 60 degrees without additional space heaters. We were in historical cold spell and it was difficult to get plumbers. I have good luck with Angie’s list. I knew I would pay more for Boston Standard. Me made appointment for 1/9/18 from 2-4 PM. BS called me 1/8/18 to confirm appointment. That day a plumber I had used in the past got back to me and said he could come out 1/9/18 AM. I felt I made commitment to BS so told other plumber I would keep my commitment to BS. BS called me on 1/9/18 at 10:16 AM and said they had emergency and would need to cancel. This was less than 4 hours before appointment. Both tenant and I had taken off work work off to be there. I was told they have about 20 employees by person I made appointment with so they should have juggled their schedule. I guess being willing to pay more for a service doesn’t make a difference with this company.

This gentleman, when we called to reschedule, yelled at our scheduler and threatened a bad Angie's List review because, in his words, "that's what you live by and need!". The weather the past week has been unprecedented and we have been working around the clock to try and provide as much heating service to existing and new customers as we can. Unfortunately, yesterday many of the technicians were running behind in their days trying to get heat up and repair burst pipes. You are correct, we did call 4 hours before the appointment to reschedule. We would have been able to get there at 8am today, however the gentleman who you wrote the review for did not give us a chance to even discuss that with him. I am sorry that you feel this deserves such a terrible review, our team has been amazing during this past cold snap and we would have done right by you had we been given the opportunity. Very well with Boston Standard; not well at all with Angie’s List. Seems I already had a service contract with Boston Standard when purchasing the Angie’s List coupon; now I can’t get ANY kind of response from ANYONE at Angie’s List to request a refund. Their “Support Center” routes me through a continuous loop of non-human cyberspace and disconnected phone numbers. HELP!!! And be forewarned!!!

Several projects with Boston Standard Plumbing – all done in ONE WEEK (Dec 11-18) First off, the names: Leo, Jon, Connor, Lilly, CJ, Brendan, and, at the office: Rachel, Micha, Josie (my apologies if I do not give each name correctly). Each and everyone of them embodies the superb qualities of Boston Standard Plumbing. In fact, the word “Standard” may sound like, well, an understatement. Unless one experiences their work from the initial stages all the way through the actual hands-on work, followed by help in all the relevant documentation and filing when it comes to financing and rebates, and, last not least, billing. My projects: replacement of old HVAC system with up to date new Trane system for heating (including humidifier) and cooling (AC); replacement of corroding water heater with a non-corroding one; swift replacement of water main valve during the work on water heater, getting city officials to respond swiftly to shut off and then on again the main on the street; installing permanent drainage of my dehumidifier in the storage space under the stoop, and installing a new pedestal sink in the guest restroom next to it. The location: lower level unit of a Boston South End brownstone built in 1900, renovated in 2005. Leo supervised the entire endeavor competently, always making sure I was completely updated on what was about to happen and how and why. Jon, Connor, and Lilly applied their skills to the HVAC and water heater replacements with professional precision and truly positive energy, always leaving their work site as clean as possible (the HVAC unit is located in the master bedroom). Jon was on top of things when he discovered that the main water valve failed to turn the water on again after installing the new water heater; CJ and Brendan came on the morning after the new HVAC and water heater were in place and working, to take care of the remaining tasks with equally high professional as well as creative skill and setting a superb standard in both. From the office, there was contact throughout and after the proceedings. Financing, rebate filing, processing of payment – each and all of these were handled with a professionalism that is utterly competent, reassuring, and hard to find anywhere else. Last and certainly not least: during each and every interaction, regardless with whom, I felt heard and understood and found myself in the best of hands. The word “standard” in Boston Standard Plumbing may sound like an understatement. It is: their standard in the relationship with the customer, in their professional skill and work ethic, and in the administrative process is of the highest standard. One last thing: as it is winter, Leo suggested to wait with activating the AC until spring (March). At that time, a team member will come by to do the hook-up and to make sure the AC works properly, and to check whether everything that has been done during the week in December is in order. Needless to say that I am simply very happy to have them come to my just before both Christmas and Easter!

Brandon and Sohan arrived at my house on time and were very thorough with their explanation. These guys were friendly and professional. I had a zone in my home that wasn't heating.They had the part I needed on hand and they were able to replace it on the spot. They had me up and running in no time!

Price was more than what I paid for with other companies through Angies List for, what I think was, the same service. Having said that, the Tech was great and was very warm, friendly and professional. So that was an upgrade over years past.

Jeff and Joe were very professional and explained the work they were doing the clearly. They fixed all of my plumbing issues. Their truck broke down but they called repeatedly with status updates for their arrival time. I appreciated it.
