I called B
Description of Work: None.Boston Standard on Monday, 1/29/2013, because we had dirty water backing up in the toilet and bathtub. I was told that if I wanted someone to come that day there would be an additional $180 emergency fee. Because the problem had only occurred once and then drained, I didn't feel it was an emergency so I made an appointment for Tues. On Tuesday, Boston Standard called and told me that they couldn't send anyone that day and rescheduled me for Wednesday. On Wednesday Boston Standard called and told me that it sounded like a main drain problem and they don't do that kind of work. They told me that they use Boston Drain

I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience we've caused you. Your call coincided with the hiring of a new office employee who didn't know which questions to ask to properly screen your call and make sure it was something we could handle. The issue you've faced is entirely our fault and I would love the opportunity to help you in the future if possible. Please call me at any time. Description of Work: I had a consult ahead of time and it was deicided that I needed to replace two kitchen faucets and that the leak in the living room was probably a drip inside pipes and that it could be looked at by cutting a hole in the closet and going through that way. They came back a few weeks later. The men were very nice and professional. The faucets, which I had purchased, were installed. A leak in the upstairs bathroom was investigated. Unfortunately, the leak was not visible through the closet and the living room ceiling had to be opened. The leak was still not evident. It was quite a mess but was not the fault of the workers from the company. They were very polite and professional but it was frustrating because I was left with a mess and the problem was not solved. The workers seemed fairly confident that they would fine the leak by their investigation but it did not happen. They said that perhaps it was a problem with the tile or grout. I had to spend quite a bit on money to repair the living room ceiling. Overall a bit frustrating

Hello Member, Thank you for taking the time to review us on Angie's List - I appreciate your feedback greatly and I share all reviews at our company meetings in an effort to keep customer satisfaction high. I am glad that there are parts of our work that satisfied you and wish that we hadn't left you with a hole in the ceiling with no results! I spoke to our plumber, Mark, and he explained to me how your ceiling was the old type and consisted of horsehair plaster and the steel mesh material - I know them to be very tough to take down. Mark tried for a while to force a leak but could not duplicate it and suspects that it is possible that you have/had an exterior leak. While our hope is to open ceilings and actually find things wrong, it is not always the case. I do hope that the cleanup that Mark performed was adequate as well as his explanation of everything. If I could be of assistance in any way in the future, please don't hesitate to call or email at any time. Regards, Joseph Wood Boston Standard Co. 617-797-1316 c jwood@bostonstandardplumbing.com

Description of Work: The serviceman was professional and knowledgable. I was prepared to have several nagging problems with leaking drains and other non-urgent but needed repairs done. I got sticker shock with the estimates which were over $2000. The scope of the solutions offered seemed far greater than I believed needed to be done. On the written estimate one particular fix was described as "Install frost free hose bibb with shutoff" for $370. In the end, after I declined this expensive fix, the repairman said that I could opt to have the same leaky spigot replaced for $50. Which I did. I started to wonder "if their original estimate for one particular problem is $370, but an effective fix can be done for $50, then what about the other estimates on the problem list? At this point I lost confidence in the company and have decided not to work with them anymore.

Response from Boston Standard Company
Hello customer, Thank you for your time on the phone today. As I've discussed, I believe your review to be unfair for the following reason - our Plumber, Jeff, provided you a large "laundry list" of repairs that were needed based on you having pointed them out to us. Included on that list was installing a modern "frost free" hose bibb which meets code. Because Jeff saw that your total cost was exceeding $2000, he did a small favor and made a repair which I wouldn't have even advised him to do - he installed a draw off that does not meet code for which he charged you $50. It appears that you've construed this as implying that the other $370 repair was unwarranted - which is not the case. You also did not rate our professionalism or punctuality for which we most always excel, but instead rated only based on cost, which is an inaccurate reflection of our business. I would kindly ask you to reconsider your rating because it is not an accurate depiction of Boston Standard Company. Sincerely, Joseph Wood Boston Standard Co. 617-288-2911 w 617-797-1316 c

Description of Work: He put the shower handle back on, installed two new shower heads and tightened the kitchen faucets. The work was completed in less than an hour. I was told that if I hired them the service fee would be waived. However when I elected not to sign on with a service plan I was assessed the fee. I felt that it was overpriced for the services provided.

Dear Member, Thank you for the review, and while we wish the score was higher, we appreciate your point of view. We work to keep our pricing fair and upfront and understand that having your system repaired is often more than customers expect, but I hope you were happy with our service otherwise. If we can be of assistance in the future, please don't hesitate to email or call at your convenience. Sincerely, Joseph Wood Boston Standard Co.

Description of Work: Service call from coupon. Flushed one water heater, Identified 13-year-old about-to-fail water heater, arranged for and accomplished exchange. Analyzed other small leaks, etc., made recommendations for future. Brad seemed to understand the concept of older plumbing... Very satisfied.

I work
Description of Work: This is the first time that I used Boston Standard. We had a leaky bathroom sink and a few small, but not urgent, plumbing problems (e.g. leaky faucet and clogged drain). They were very responsive to my call. Someone was here within a few hours from when I called, which was much appreciated since we had an active leak being caught in a bucket. The two men that came out were very professional in reviewing the situation and proposing how to deal with it. It all sounded good until I was handed a quote. I was told that, for a total of $760, I could have a bathroom drain replaced ($300), a leaky faucet repaired ($209) and a drain unclogged ($246). I may be out of touch with what it costs to get plumbing done these days, but this struck my husband and me as work that could be done in a couple of hours. I decided to just have them repair the urgent problem (for $300), which took one hour. We are saving the rest for someone else that does not charge as much. I did appreciate being able to use the $25 Angie's List coupon which cut down the additional $29 service charge for coming out.

Description of Work: The quoted price to replace two faucets, each less than $100, exorbitant! $460 to do a job that would probably take less than 1 hour to do is ridiculous!

Dear Member, I am sorry that you were unhappy with the price that we provided. We try to walk a line where we offer a high level of service and quality while also keeping our price fair to us and the customer- I'm sure we don't always succeed, but we do try. Customer referrals are the lifeblood of my business - nearly 70% of our business is repeat & referral - our pricing book has been set up with this in mind. Our pricing is determined, in advance, by entering our yearly costs and the average amount of time that jobs like yours would take, and we haven't raised the price since 2009. Sometimes, as you say, we do finish jobs quickly and the cost works in our favor- sometimes we miss something and spend 3 times the amount of time we would normally expect to- and with our pricing setup, the cost is always the same to the customer. Some customers would prefer to pay a company "by the hour", and in some cases, they would pay a "by the hour" shop less if the job only takes and hour- but if the job runs over, they would wind up paying a premium. When I started the company, I decided to price jobs "flat rate", like you were quoted, to eliminate the need to charge customers different prices for the same job based on skill level or "Murphy's Law". I appreciate your feedback and would be happy to discuss this further if you would like- my mobile phone number and email are listed below. Thank you, and have a Happy New Year, Joseph Wood Boston Standard 617-797-1316 c

Description of Work: I called for an estimate to have dishwasher installed. after a couple of emails i did receive an apology for the delay, however, i could not get an estimate, which I don't understand. There would be a service charge, then they could tell me cost to install. I don't get it as I said even a guesstimate, after all, it seems ridiculous to pay a service charge, then another charge upon installation??? as I said who wants to go through the trouble of setting up an appt. not like the cost for installation, send person away ( after service charge)??? nonsense.

Thank you for taking the time to review our company- both good and bad, we appreciate all reviews. It appears that we were not very responsive or timely in responding to your call, and I apologize for that. As far as the service charge goes, we try to be keep the service charge low, but we do have to charge- we send a fully-stocked truck with 2 plumbers in it, and we pay them for a full workday, so there is no way to do it for free. Most companies that offer "free" estimates are only adding it in the back end of the job. Our dispatchers are also not qualified to give quotes- they are not plumbers. I would be happy to help in the future and you can call me, the owner, directly if ever needed. Sincerely, Joseph Wood Boston Standard 617-797-1316 c
