Maffei Landscape Contractors

Description of Work: First contractor assigned to my project was let go and I kept sending emails with no reply. Finally called the company and was told he was gone and i would be assigned a new landscape designer. Couldn't make an appt with the new designer until the could be fit in with the owners schedule. Started emailing back and forth about getting the design done and work started. Dates promised for the design to be completed and sne to me passed. No response from emails, again had to call only to find out the designer had a medical emergency and was in the hospital. The owner was unaware that I did not have my design plan yet, made promise to get it to me ASAP. Owner ended up firing the landscape designer (who was very good) because "he didn't provide good service to me". The Owner Rob Maffei was unaware of what work the designer was doing prior to him going out on medical leave and took no responsibility for his own lack of follow thru on ensuring there was coverage in his designers absence. I was able to get my deposit back, but wasted a number of months working with this company only to havr to start at square one again.

Description of Work: We engaged Maffei Landscaping to redesign our gardens. They pulled out all of our plantings with the exception of our larger trees and reinstalled the plantings in a more aesthetically pleasing way. Our gardens had become crowded with the original builder installations. Many plants had proliferated and taken over some areas of the gardens. I was reasonably satisfied with their work, although I would have preferred a more thoughtful plan, featuring the more showy plantings. Maffei installed some new plantings and all but one small planting survived nicely through the winter. I contacted Maffei and ask for a replacement for the small planting that was not dead, but not thriving. Maffei's representative came to our home, arriving promptly, and inspected the planting. The Maffei representative said that Maffei does not guarantee or warranty new plantings through the winter. Also he said, because this plant was not dead, they would cut out the branches that appeared to be dead and the plant would probably be all right in a few years. He said their policy is that they do not warranty plants through the winter because they would go broke if they did. He said no one does that because the nurseries do not offer them a warranty. Because the representative we had worked told us the plants were warrantied, Maffei, after much discussion and phone call to my husband at work, finally agreed to replace the damaged plant. He said we could expect to hear from him by the end of the week when he could have someone replace the plant. He came out on a Monday and Maffei Landscapers are in our neighborhood on a daily basis, but he would not be able to replace the plant for 7 to 10 days. My experience with other landscapers has been quite different. On two occasions, I have experienced winter damage to new plantings and in both cases, the landscaper offered to replace the plants. Maffei also sliced our electrical line going to our lamp post and offered only $100 toward the $700 it cost to have the line repaired. They did come in and dig up the sod and replace it before and after the work, but when they replaced the sod, it was done poorly and we had to repair it after their work. We also engaged Maffei to shut down and turn on our irrigation system and they charged $59.00 to replace one coupling. After some discussion, they agreed to remove the charge. It took their employee fewer than 5 minutes to replace a $1,00 coupling. When we received our bill for the landscaping work, Maffei had failed to adjust the bill for the $100 reimbusement cost for damaging our electrical lines and it was necessary to make another phone call. Upon each conversation with Maffei, they said they would have to discuss the matter with the person who had been on site to do the work and get back to us. We will not be engaging Maffei Landscaping to do more work for us. They seem to have difficulty communicating among themselves to provide accurate billing. They do not warranty their installation through the winter. They overcharge for irrigation adjustments. They damaged our electrical lines
