In 2002 my then 25-yr old well developed problems; Scannell came and outlined my options, which included having a new well drilled, but after inspecting my well they replaced my old jet-pump in the basement for about $750 and told me I'd probably be good for another 10 years with that well. Fast forward 10 years almost to the exact week, and my old well finally failed. I called Scannell again and they came right over and inspected it, told me that this time they would not advise putting any more money into the old well, and outlined my options. I took a few hours to call around about the expense and logistics of hooking up to town water, weighed my options and decided to have the new well done. Scannell told me I could have a new well in a day or two, while town water is much more involved to get installed and I was about to leave on a long business trip. We were getting by using a garden hose from the next-door neighbor's faucet but it was January; luckily the weather was relatively warm for those few days but we needed a solution immediately. Scannell came out the day after my initial call and drilled the main shaft. They had some trouble with their drilling truck so were a few hours late, but once there they got to work and allowed me to watch the entire process. They know the area and have a good feel for how deep to go to look for good water, how to avoid iron contamination, and how to get the well down deep enough to ensure water year-round. They hit water at 33 feet, and kept drilling until 45 for good measure, backing off when they started to see signs of rust on the pebbles coming up the auger. They pushed a liner pipe down into the shaft and flushed out the well, and told me they'd be back the next day to finish. It rained heavily that day so they called to tell me they'd do the final installation the following day. At the appointed time they showed up with a backhoe, dug around the new well and found the pipes for the old one and transferred them to the new well. By noon I had fresh water, much better quality than before from nearly the same spot in my yard, and the new submersible pump is silent and puts out much more pressure than my old jet pump. Nice to be able to run water at night without waking the whole house with that noisy old pump - we don't miss it at all. We're very happy with our new well water - it tastes great and has no chemicals added. The Scannell folks know their business - the current owner used to work for the original guy and bought the company when he retired, and after ~20 years in the business he is now apprenticing his son into the trade. They're good people, look you in the eye when they talk to you and do what they say they will do and charge what they said it'll cost. And they have a very good sense for finding good water on the Cape and know their way around well hardware.
Description of Work: Inspected failed well (all water in the house had drained back down into the well during the night) and told me it was a failed check valve at the bottom of the well Advised me of my options: put ~$800-$1000 into my 35-yr old well with no guarantees it would last very long due to all the other old hardware down there Drill a new well for ~$3,000 Hook up to town water I liked my old well water and don't like town water, and my research showed that hooking up to town water would take too long, appears it is not something you do in an emeregency. I would also need a long and expensive ditch dug, which would ruin my front yard. In my opinion Scannell's estimate of town water hookup cost was slightly elevated but in the ball park for my circumstances and very comparable to getting a new well drilled. I decided to have the new well put in.
