I contacted Mr. Gibson with a question per extending and capping a chimney. He explained at this point in his career he prefers to do smaller repair tasks, not something as involved as an extension. He was very prompt in returning my call and I appreciated his responsiveness and professionalism despite the fact that he was not interested in this particular job. I would definitely call him back again for something less involved.

I found Bob's info through angieslist. I called several contractors for my old fireplace and chimney, all of the previous proposals were out of my budget. Bob came and gave a very reasonable price and feasible solution. He re-pointed the 6 rows of the chimney and added a new cap. He has been working in this field for many years, he is experienced, responsible and professional. I was very pleased with the result. Two winters have been passed, the chimney works very well for our family.

He responded immediately, in our case he came out the same day, cleaned up after himself and really seemed to know what he was doing as he has been in the business a long time.
Description of Work: Bob added two rows of bricks to face of our fireplace essentially lowering the opening of the fireplace and allowing for a better draw and eliminating the smoke that was blowing back into the house.

Bob came and repointed the taller of my two chimneys. He discovered the 2nd chimney was in good shape and only needed a rain cap. He was able to place a standard cap on the taller chimney and he agreed to order one as it was not a standard size. I am waiting on that to be delivered and installed. Bob is retired and so seems only willing to do smaller jobs that suite him. However, I cannot recommend him highly enough.
Description of Work: I asked Bob to price repointing two of my brick chimneys and place rain caps. He gave an excellent price and I asked him to do the work.

As background, my family has been in the construction business for 50+ years and I have been around half a dozen masons for the last 30. I could tell that Bob was old school and knew what he was talking about. I have a fireplace in my house that smokes when first started. Mr. Gibson identified a number of issues pretty quickly. He quoted me an approximate price and we agreed that he could start the job in a couple of weeks. He is polite and professional but doesn't stand around-he gets right into the work. He did not make any design decisions for us, so it is important to have a good idea of what you want ahead of time. Maybe he would assist in this if asked, but we knew what we wanted. Basically he demoed the brick facade, raised the firebox 6"(to aid in draft)installed a new flue, and rebuilt the facade using 4-6 inch Pennsylvania fieldstone's. He lowered the lentil and closed the fireplace opening somewhat to improve draft. Last, he installed a new one piece stone hearth. I installed a new natural wood mantle-it came out great.
Description of Work: Bob Gibson demoed the brick facade on my fireplace, raised the height of the firebox 6 inches, installed a new flue, rebuilt the facade with Pennsylvania field stone, and installed a solid stone hearth. He also took the demo materials away.

We had originally planned to repair/replace our old stoop with simple poured concrete, and Bob Gibson was well rated for concrete work, so we asked him to give us an estimate. What he proposed instead was a much nicer solution as you can see in the pictures: repairing the brick base and laying cut blue stone for the top. His proposal definitely caught us off guard, being much more money than we had originally planned to spend, but I think the stunning result is worth it. Mr. Gibson was prompt, professional, courteous, thorough and conscientious. Although I think he isn't the cheapest, I would definitely recommend him if you want quality work.
Description of Work: Replace our old concrete/brick/flagstone front stoop which was falling apart with a new brick/blue stone stoop. See before and after pics below. The work took place over three days: he removed the old stoop Wednesday and laid the brick work and let it cure overnight; laid the stone on Thursday, and came Friday to touch things up and finish the job. His original estimate was $1350, but the final price was $100 lower than that.

Fine, prompt and courteous. I don't know how cost would compare to others but I think it was definitely fair for the amount of work done. Bob is semi-retired and indicated he wouldn't want to take on work involving heights or scaffolding, but he climbed 20' ladder to work on top of the chimney with no problem. He also had used brick to match mine for the hearth repair. Obviously he is very experienced.

Very badly - we waited with a leaking roof for many weeks, without anyone showing up. While this may have been a small value repair, the leaking into our home was (needless to say) important to us and needed to be stopped. We're lucky that the winter was mild through the end of December, since we would otherwise have been stuck with this leak all winter if snow made it hard for someone else to come and do the work.
Description of Work: Mr. Gibson agreed to repair the flashing on our chimney, after we called him out to look at a leak around the chimney base. He said he'd be back to do it within the next couple of weeks. It was a wet couple of weeks, and we waited awhile longer for him, but he didn't show. When we called back about the work, he stopped by again, seemed to be having a little trouble remembering the job, but said he'd be back to do it as soon as possible given the weather - after a couple more weeks, we had someone else do the work. Really frustrating.

Overall we think Bob did a good job. We had other masons give us estimates and he was the cheapest. He told us that since we have a damper, we didn't need a stainless steel cage cap to cover the chimney opening as was recommended by the chimney sweep company for over $500. My only complaint would be that he didn't give us a specific day or time so we were awaken by him pounding on our chimney at 8 am!!
Description of Work: After tearing down loose and crumbling bricks, Bob rebuilt the top of the chimney, and installed new chimney flashing. He made sure our damper was working correctly before he left. He also sealed cracks on the front steps with cement.

He said he couldn't do the work all in one day. So I said how about Sunday October 22nd and he said he couldn't work. He insisted on doing the work again on Saturday when I wasn't there and I told him that he wasn't listening and that I wasn't going to be there and I wanted to be there when the work was done. He said I should find someone else to do the job and you better believe that I am. Avoid dealing with this guy. The facts are as follows: I can't recommend if he has good pricing because it isn't clear he was even here to do an estimate or see what needed repair. He didn't provide an estimate for both chimneys as noted and requested. He allegedly came over and walked on my roof without my knowledge or even on an agreed to time (if that is the case) or he lied about the estimate. He scheduled an appointment on his own time to do the work and didn't care about me, my family or my schedule. Pretty arrogant considering I am hiring him to do a job. Avoid this guy.
Description of Work: Called him and came over to give an estimate on repair work for two chimneys in December 05. He performed estimate & some minor work. We couldn't afford the rest, so we waited until October 06. He lost estimate and we scheduled another appointment for him to give estimate Monday Oct 16th. He never showed. Instead he called me Friday October 16th, 6pm at home and said he was coming over the next day (SATURDAY) to do the work at 8:15am. I asked him what about the estimate, he was supposed to come over and provide first? He blurted out $550 for one chimney. I said the estimate was for two chimneys and how did he come up with that if he never came over. He said he came over Tuesday the 17th which was a lie. My family was home all day. He laughed and said he was up on our roof. If true, the fact that he was over my house without my knowledge is very unsettling. I also had plans Saturday Oct 21st 8am to 11pm and told him, if he wanted to do it, then it would have to be after 11am.

My experience with Mr. Gibson was pleasant and efficient in every way. He appears to be a very experienced and competent mason. I can't judge the reasonableness of his pricing, as I did not comparison shop; however, I don't believe his work represented a bargain.

Bob was great - I highly recommend him for any chimney repairs. I first learned of Bob through Angie's List. He was pretty easy to get a hold of for scheduling an appointment, was very polite and informative and got the job done much sooner than I expected. Overall, it was a pleasant experience.
Description of Work: Replaced top section of 2 cracked clay flue liners, repaired 3 layers of loose bricks on top of my chimney, poured a concrete slab at top of chimney, placed fitted bluestone on top of unused flue ($550 + $150 in materials). BOB SHOWED UP WITHIN A COUPLE OF DAYS FROM MY CALL TO INSPECT THE CHIMNEYS. HE WAS COURTEOUS AND VERY PROFESSIONAL, BUT ALSO YOU COULD TELL HE WAS A STRAIGHT SHOOTER. HE GAVE A ROUGH ESTIMATE OF APPROXIMATELY $700 PER CHIMNEY. HE THEN SAID HE WOULD BE BACK IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS. A COUPLE OF WEEKS WENT BY AND I WAS THINKING OF CALLING BOB WHEN MY WIFE CALLED ME AT WORK ONE DAY AND SAID THAT BOB HAD SHOWN UP. HE BEGAN WORK THAT DAY. BOB DID THE WORK OVER TWO DAYS AND THE RESULT WAS SPECTACULAR. BOTH CHIMNEY TOPS LOOK TO BE IN GREAT SHAPE AND HAVE THE SAME APPEARANCE AS THE REST OF THE CHIMNEY. WHEN I WENT TO PAY HE SAID THE COST WAS $1200 WHICH WAS $200 BELOW THE ORIGINAL ROUGH ESTIMATE. BOB WAS A GREAT PERSON TO WORK WITH. HE IS HONEST, FAIR, THOROUGH AND DOES GREAT WORK. THEY DON'T MAKE MANY LIKE HIM ANYMORE.
Description of Work: BOTH CHIMNEYS HAD LOOSE AND FALLING BRICK ON THE TOP AND SHOULDER. IN ADDITION, A PREVIOUS ''FREELANCE'' MASON HAD BUTCHERED ONE OF THE CHIMNEYS TRYING TO SECURE IT. IT LOOKED LIKE A BAD ART PROJECT. I ASKED BOB TO TEAR DOWN WHAT THE PREVIOUS GUY HAD DONE, AND TO REBUILD BOTH CHIMNEYS FROM SEVERAL BRICKS DOWN TO THE TOP.
