The first problem became apparent when paint kept peeling off the exterior siding on a 9?x12? cantilevered box bay off our 2nd floor master bedroom. We had the area repainted several times, and the paint kept peeling. We contacted Jeff Whitmore, and he sent out an employee-Brian Glass. He replaced the lower trim board, added a piece of flashing, and said the problem was fixed. He claimed water became trapped behind the board, but that the flashing would prevent this from happening again. At the time, I thought this was an inadequate repair, because there were several areas above the trim board which were also peeling. Areas on the box bay continued to peel, so I contacted another contractor. He informed me that all the wood was rotten, and interior plywood had been used on the box bay. Although we should have complained to Jeff again, we were so frustrated with his previous response that we paid to have the entire section resided. Another problem became apparent in 2008 when we had some work done on our heating system. Since the addition had been completed, the heat in the master bedroom did not work adequately on really cold days. On the days when the outside temperature was in the teens or lower, the inside temperature would only get up to 62 degrees. A plumbing/heating person working at our home determined that the incorrect size tubing had been installed in the base board system for the entire addition. Apparently, the tubing was too small to supply enough hot water to the baseboard in the master bedroom. The only way to repair this problem would be to open up the walls in our home and replace the tubing. This is a costly repair. The next problem we discovered (April 2010) was a leaking roof which damaged ceilings in four different rooms. The entire roof had been replaced by Whitmore Bros. Const. in 2001. We contacted Jeff Whitmore about the roof and heating problems he said he only offers a one year warranty on his work. Two roofers have looked at our roof and have both stated that the leaking is occurring at the base of the chimney because the lead flashing was never properly installed. Water is seeping into our home because, the lead flashing is laying over the top of the roof singles and is not properly secured to the chimney. These problems were not a result of normal wear and tear, but rather poor workmanship. Although not immediately visible, these problems began when the work was performed. The wrong type of siding was used on the outside of our home, the wrong size tubing was used in our heating system, and the lead flashing was not properly installed on our roof. We have already spent thousand of dollars to repair the siding, and now we face additional expense to repair Whitmore Brothers other mistakes. Who knows how many other errors have yet to be discovered. Since Jeff Whitmore does not stand behind his work, we want other homeowners to know how Whitmore Brothers does business.
Description of Work: We hired Whitmore Bros. Const. (DRS) to build an addition ( master bedroom, master bathroom, laundry room, mudroom, garage)to our home. The project was expected to take 4 months to complete, but actually took about a year to finish. There were problems from the start. There was no project or site manager overseeing the project. The owner could rarely be reached when questions or problems came up. Calls and messages to the office during business hours were frequently unanswered. Days and weeks would go by when no workers showed up. This was particularly distressing because the initial stages of the project spanned the cold fall and winter months. The back of our home, was not adequately closed off from the winter weather during November and December. Workers only placed sheets of plastic on the opening where the main part of our home joined to the addition. I came home one night in December to find that the plastic had fallen down, 15 degree air was flooding into my house, and heating system was running constantly, trying to raise the inside temperature. Although we were very dissatisfied with the process and pace of work, we felt we had no recourse. In 2001, contractors had so much business that they had 1-2 year waiting lists. Therefore, switching to another contractor was not feasible. We just hoped and prayed that the project would be finished before summer. Once the work was finally completed, we hoped that we could enjoy our addition. Unfortunately, we have encountered various problems over the years resulting from poor workmanship
