+ 6 moreOverall they did a great job. The workers showed up on time every morning and were extremely pleasant. They seemed to really enjoy what they do and took a lot of pride in their work. They tried to accomplish the work as quickly as possible and were efficient in cleaning up at the end of each day. Any issues that arose were resolved in a timely manner and they were definitely concerned about us being happy with the final product. The custom made cabinets look beautiful and are constructed very well. All the drawers are soft-close and work perfectly. We enjoyed being able to work with a designer. Louis had some really great ideas that we wouldn't have thought of. We were really happy with how he tied everything together. The painters did an amazing job and were able to get our old trim and an old window to look brand new. The only major complaint I have is that their communication could be better. There were often times when people would show up on a Saturday expecting us to know they were coming, and we were not expecting anyone. The guy finishing our floor showed up with the wrong finish because he was not told what finish we wanted when it was decided months prior. We would often ask about things that seemed to be not getting completed and it seemed like the workers would not know anything about it when we would check in again. Once we were able to speak directly with our project manager things were quickly resolved. It would have been great to have his info right from the beginning so we could check in with him. They were, however, very concerned with making us happy in the end. I was even told that they were not done until I was completely satisfied and felt they were finished. Anything we would ask if possible to do, they would say it wasn't a problem and would figure out a way. We definitely felt they loved their jobs and they were here to make us happy. It was such a relief after hearing so many contractors say everything was a lot of work and would act disinterested. I would definitely recommend them and consider using them again in the future. They really do strive for great customer service.
Description of Work: We did a full gut job on our kitchen. We had two walls taken down, vaulted the living/dinning room ceiling and had all new flat ceilings installed with recessed lighting. Eight new windows were added to our living room (4 double hung with 4 stationary above) as well as two new windows in our kitchen. Old window and back door locations were closed up. We got hardwood floors installed in the kitchen where tile used to be and they were blended in to match the existing floors. The kitchen got all Mattos constructed custom made cabinets along with a custom island, tile back splash and granite counter tops. The hallway and living room/dining room were all painted as well.

+ -1 moreCalled to have him come out and give an estimate on our house as we needed to have some siding replaced. I was very pleased as he answered right away, and seemed to be interested in doing the work. He said he could come by the next day to give an estimate, and that I should email him my information so that he would have the address, etc. Happy with the setup I immediately sent him the email. He never called or showed the next day. The day after the missed estimate I called him to check in. He had no memory of having spoken with me, and we confirmed that the email address I had used was correct as he never received the email. It was correct, and he "didn't receive anything." Well, as we've all had that happen I didn't think much about it. He then took down my info and asked if I was going to be home in the next half hour to an hour as he'd come by right now. I again, was very pleased and let him know I'd be available, and he confirmed my home phone number so he could call if anything changed. 2 Hours have passed and he still has not showed up or called. I called and left him a message telling him not to bother. I'd rather work with somebody who is professional enough to take people's time seriously.

+ 0 moreThis is the second large project that Jel and team have done for us. The first was a kitchen remodel (last year). This time around we had them do our bathroom remodel. This included gutting the existing bathroom, expanding it a bit, and moving some walls and the doorway. Once again, Jel and team did an excellent job. The quality of the work was outstanding and we love the end result. The project came in on budget and on time (as did the kitchen project). In addition, working with Jel is very easy. He aims to please, so if you want something changed, or have any concerns, he will work to fix it immediately.

+ 7 moreMattos far exceeded expectations for design, construction, and professional communication. Gel and Louis are an excellent owner/designer team. They provided immediate responses to questions and construction change requests. Many times in the work I requested "green" design features that required a delay to order some hard to find product and Mattos was extremely flexible and genuinely interested in the options such as LED recessed lighting and a water recirculating pump. The design advice regarding bathroom layout and material styles was phenomenal creating a space that went far beyond what my wife and I could have envisioned for the space. I am impressed with their attention to detail as all the work that was performed was at an exacting standard of craftsmanship. Mattos has a full service team and can even custom build furniture - they custom built the mirror cabinet and my one design mistake was ordering a vanity base from a different company. When we requested an expedited completion date to accommodate visiting guests Mattos sent a large work team and completed the project in four days - before the bathroom was needed. I hugely recommend Mattos Construction Company and will hire them again for any work that needs to be completed on my home.
Description of Work: Mattos Construction Company performed a gut demolition and remodel of one bathroom, completely replaced the ventilation system in a second, and remodeled an unfinished closet. Mattos designer Louis provide design guidance at every step of the process. Owner Gel was available at any time to answer work order changes, answer general or specific questions, and provide additional project management oversight. For the full bathroom renovation - Mattos dealt with the permitting, completely removed all existing fixtures and materials from old bathroom, changed out the plumbing so bathtub, toilet and sink locations could be optimized; the team changed the window location and type to maximize privacy, repainted and re-shingled exterior, reframed interior, redid electrical work, applied spray foam insulation, installed radiant electric floor, installed drywall, tiled floors and wall, installed ventilation duct and roof work, installed sink and vanity, installed new finished carpentry for door/baseboard/window, painted, and constructed a custom made mirror with interior cabinet space. For ventilation in second bathroom - Mattos removed existing flexible duct, existing fan/heater and controls, and installed new rigid duct, installed a duct "silencer" on the run, repaired walls and ceiling, and installed new energy efficient controls. For hall closet - Mattos stripped existing wall covering, sprayed foam insulation on sloped ceiling, installed drywall, installed bamboo flooring, and finished space with paint and baseboard.

+ 13 moreJel Mattos is truly an exceptional professional with an excemplary work ethic. My favorite words of his are "no problem" and "whatever you want". In other words, he is upbeat and positive and wants the whole experience from estimate to finish to be free of stress and hassle. Jel's crew are the most accommodating and polite workmen I have ever met. They obviously love their job and their boss. In addition, they are incredibly talented craftsmen. I have to mention "The Woodpecker" as he is so aptly named. He is Jel's cabinet maker. All I had to do was to hand over a picture of a cabinet and a fireplace mantel that I liked, and he replicated it. Actually, not only did he replicate it, he improved upon it! Of course, I have to mention his painters. These guys are the most amazing painters I have ever seen. We have has lots of painters (our home is 150 years old and has 15 rooms so you can imagine the upkeep with paint we have had to do) and never have I seen prep work like this!! By the time these guys were done, there was not a crack, dent, spot, or spill or splatter to be seen anywhere! Did I mention that I gave them the wrong wall color? They had finished the job and I came home a little surprised that the room (20 x 16 x9ft) was not what I thought I gave them. They just laughed and did it over. "No problem" as they and Jel said. My fault and yet they insisted that they wanted to do it over (no charge, yet it was MY FAULT!!!) My next favorite moment was when it was 4 degrees in Feb and they came to work in a framed but unheated room that was 24 degrees. "No problem" they said. I honestly can say that I miss these guys! They were the nicest, happiest most incredible tradesmen I have ever met. Mattos Company is coming back next year to replace a massive wrap around porch on this old house in the spring. Can't wait to see how it turns out!!

Description of Work: Complete kitchen and bathroom remodel. They finished the job in a very short time so we wouldn't have to pay for a hotel for very long. We got custom cabinets made and they turned out really beautiful. We are very happy with the kitchen and bathroom work that was done. For the most part, they were able to stay within the original budget. We would definitely use them again for future work and would highly recommend them.

Description of Work: We attempted to get an estimate for a minor remodel of our bathroom (switch from shower only to tub/shower combo, retiling floor and walls, no structural change) from this company. It was clear to us that they did not want to perform any work that would cost less than $12,000. We were barely able to talk about what we were looking for, and without any details of the scope of the work, he stated that it would cost at least 12k. I'm offended by his unwillingness to at least listen to what potential customers have to say, and if they are just not going to do any work under that amount (from the tone on the phone and how little we got to "discuss," that is exactly what I think the internal policy must be), I think they should say so on their website or on the Angies' list page. Not everyone is willing to or able to spend that much money, especially when there is no need.

+ 7 moreThe experience was exceptional. Before beginning work I received estimates from four contractors (all through Angies List, of course). Mattos was the best not only in terms of the price (his estimate was tied for the lowest, however Jel offered a $2,000 granite allowance so it was actually $2,00 cheaper) but also in terms of service. Jel showed up promptly for the appointment and turned the estimate around faster than any of the other contractors bidding on the job. Once the contract was signed it took two weeks before the work began. Work was delayed a day or two due to delays with the permit and Jel's crew being sick the initial day, however once it began it ran exactly to course. The job took exactly as long as Jel said it would and his people did more than I asked for (specifically recessed two extra lights at no charge, took away an old refrigerator at no additional cost, and added painting at the last minute (for a fee) even though it wasn't in the original contract). Mattos heavily uses subs however all of them were great. Only some of the workers were conversational in English, however Jel had a point person who was always available in case something couldn't be communicated.

+ 5 moreGreat! Jel and his men were working at times when other contractors would not--nights, weekends, holidays. Our renovation started in the fall of 2008 and lasted through the holidays and into the spring--throughout the process, the men at Mattos Company were conscientious of our needs and willing to talk through options. Though the work was completed sometime in March of 2009, from time to time, little issues have come up--nothing major, minor fine-tuning adjustments--Jel has responded quickly and has sent someone over, at my convenience, to address the concerns. At the end of the day, he wants us to be happy...and we are! We are already planning our next job with Mattos Co.
Description of Work: Completer renovation of a two family home including installation of wood, laminate, and tile floors, painting throughout, and two bathrooms--one with a custom shower.

+ 8 moreJel Mattos is the construction manager. He communicated clearly and immediately throughout the process. When the problems came up, we discussed them thoroughly, and, with Jel's help but not coercion, I made decisions about what to do. The best thing was that Jel had capable workpeople to deal with everything, including redesign, carpentry (including relocating and rebuilding floors and walls), cabinet-making, plumbing, electrical work, HVAC, insulation and exterior siding, cementing the cellar and installing a sump pump. The workers worked steadily without wasting time, and they cleaned up every day. At the end of the job everything was completed down to the smallest detail, and the place was left completely clean and free of debris. This was a difficult job with a lot of surprises. It could have been a nightmare. Because of Jel's attention to the job and responsiveness, and the capability and hard work of the workers, it got done in a timely manner and with the quality of work that I wanted, and, therefore, did not make me at all nervous or frustrated. The price was definitely fair for the work that was done. I will be happy to work with Mattos Construction again in the future.
Description of Work: My single family house was to have the kitchen and bathrooom remodeled. The house turned out to have many serious problems once the walls were opened up. The job turned into overall remodeling and actual rebuilding of floors and walls, including complete change in the layout.

+ -1 moreWe can't say enough good things about our experiences with Mattos Construction. The crew was punctual and professional, and we are thrilled with the finished rooms. We especially appreciated our project manager's suggestions for the design of the kitchen. He made some recommendations that we hadn't considered (such as vaulting the kitchen ceiling and installing under-cabinet lighting). We incorporated those suggestions and are so glad that we did! With such an old house, problems are bound to creep up during a remodel -- in our case, the condition of the floor joists was much worse than we expected. Mattos Construction adeptly handled the issue, and yet managed to keep the costs quite close to our original estimate. We've since asked them back to make other minor repairs to the house, and to paint the exterior. We highly recommend Mattos Construction; we had a great experience with them, and wouldn't hesitate to use them again in the future.
Description of Work: We remodeled the kitchen, dining room and laundry room of our 150-year-old house. The remodel involved demolishing the kitchen down to the studs and floor/ceiling joists, and then moving the location of the door to the basement, changing the placement of our kitchen and laundry appliances, vaulting the ceiling, bringing in a new electrical subpanel, and reinforcing the floors in the kitchen and dining room. Mattos Construction also painted the kitchen and installed new cabinets, countertops and hardwood floors.

The crew was here from early morning until late evening even on Saturdays if we let them. They were superb. I could not have found better or detail oriented people than them. They performed miracles and they cleaned up after themselves. They were pricey but the work was worth the price.
Description of Work: I used them to turn a dysfunctional garage into a mudroom and a storage room. They removed the garage door and framed the wall. They raised the floor and out in bricks to match the rest of the house. They put in doors and windows. They gutted few bathrooms and helped me with the designs. + -1 moreThe project overall went very smoothly. We had 3 different contractors come in to provide estimates, and Mattos' estimate beat the others. I had a good feeling about Jel Mattos from the start, as he is very personable, responsive, and respectful. He responds quickly over email or phone, which I fully appreciate. When his team started the work, they all were polite, respectful of us and our house, hardworking, and friendly. Jel would call regularly with status and to discuss any open questions or issues. Most importantly, the work was done on-time, on budget, and with very high quality. I would absolutely recommend them, and plan to use them for our future projects (and there will be plenty!)
Description of Work: This work involved a complete kitchen remodel. Although the walls and ceiling were not fully gutted (as one way for us to save on cost), we ripped out everything else and put in new floor tile, cabinets, granite, backsplash, and appliances.

+ -1 moreI obtained detailed quotes from 4 contractors. Mattos did not offer the lowest pricing (his price was second to lowest) but he inspired the most confidence. Other contractors did not want to do the work with city permits, or did not seem to know how to deal with removal of the load-bearing wall. The work was done exactly as specified and Mattos has a highly skilled team of electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and craftsmen. We passed every stage of inspection easily. Mattos' workers were all professionals and seemed to know exactly what they were doing. I monitored the work closely and was pleased by their attention to detail and use of quality materials. Any mistakes or things not to my liking were fixed right away, without additional cost. Mattos is very customer-service oriented, returning calls right away to resolve requests, complaints, or confusion asap. Mattos also did some extra work, not specified on the contract, for free, for which I was very grateful. The outcome is beautiful and the quality is better than I had imagined. My one complaint is that the project was a bit disorganized and did not progress as quickly as I had hoped. I think that Mattos took on another project shortly after starting mine, and this took away some of his labor from my project. It would have been helpful to have better project management. At times, I felt like the project manager, emailing Jel detailed to-do lists each day. I would absolutely recommend Jel to my friends and intend to hire him again for future projects.

I needed a complete bathroom remodel and wanted to upgrade my kitchen with new appliances and countertops adding to the existing cabinets and not changing the design layout. The worst thing about the kitchen as it was before was the pantry--old cabinets, peeling paint, and hideous counters. Jel Mattos came on time to our first appointment, took a look around at both the kitchen and bathroom and listened to what I had to say. I was working with a limited budget, and he understood that. At a loss about how to remodel a bathroom and without any real vision for the space, I was happy to have Jel suggest a designer he had used in a recent renovation. Shortly after, he sent me the estimate, we discussed it and his company got to work right away with the demolition. I was clear that I couldn't have both the bathroom and kitchen torn up at the same time and he scheduled the work so that there was always water and useable space for me. The estimated time was about two months for the work. His workers showed up every day and were very courteous about working in the designated space. I was on sabbatical leave at the time and working at home so I really appreciated their courtesy. I didn't have to be here because a lockbox was placed on my front door which made their coming and going easy and pain free for me. During the entire renovation everyone was friendly and thoughtful. At the end of each work day whoever was here--plumber, electrician, carpenter, painter--cleaned up the work space and the hallway so the house remained as clean as possible during the entire renovation. In the past I have never experienced workers doing any clean-up and several years ago I was told by a contractor to hire a cleaning company, so I was amazed at this amenity. The work moved along and was completed in six weeks. It is exactly what I asked for and I am very pleased. Just one note: since I didn't have a really clear vision of everything I wanted, I did make some changes from time to time and Jel and his brother were great about making the changes without hesitation. They were easy to work with and I would definitely hire them again for the next project. The work is careful and each person seemed to take his time to do the best work possible. It was a very positive experience from beginning to end.

+ 3 moreJel Mattos and Leo, the project manager, went over all the plans with us and suggested excellent and cost saving ideas. They are very professional and responsive, and took total responsibility for both successes and problems that inevitably arise in a job like this. I am retired and was able to be around for most of the work, which interests me anyway. An outstanding feature of Mattos company is the excellent quality of craftsmanship in framing, plastering, tiling, wiring and plumbing. The tile person Jel uses is nothing short of phenomenal. He is an artist. The foremen and workmen are excellent, polite, responsive and caring. Each night they completely cleaned up, regularly hauled away demolition material, and suggested improvements or small changes that I really appreciated. Jel always called me back promptly when contacted and came over to the site for any questions or small problems. This company operates with honesty and integrity, and is obviously proud of their work. I plan to hire them for an eventual kitchen renovation. Outstanding experience.
Description of Work: Jel Mattos installed a completely new bathroom on the first floor and gut renovated another upstairs. We own a two family in Somerville and wanted to use part of an existing bedroom for a new downstairs guest bath. The upstairs bath was old with an iron tub with clawed feet, etc. and it badly needed renovation. It had a partly raised floor that needed to be all one level. Jel (Mattos) the company owner provided a designer who sketched out a plan for the guest bath, and it suggested a hallway change with a column near a stairwell that we really liked, so we willingly enlarged the job from the original concept. The design really made the plan exciting and completely tied in with the existing features. We never would have seen the potential without the designer's ideas. The guest bath involved gutting two walls, leaving a third wall as is and creating a fourth. The plan involved a toilet, a custom granite sink, and a shower. In the hall, he put in a column and a closet that nicely tied into the existing stairwell. We had this bath tiled on the floor and forty inches up on each wall with 12' stone tile from a company in Malden that Jel recommended and had excellent prices and services. The shower is completely tiled with a beautiful custom glass door. A new exhaust fan/light and heating vent was installed. Jel built a custom sink vanity with maple doors and two wall cabinets of maple as well. The bath looks wonderful, and appears more luxurious than we had imagined. There was obviously new plumbing and wiring as well, by excellent subcontractors. The upstairs renovation we made more modest to stay within our budget of $50K tops. It involved gutting three walls and leaving one as is, reframing walls and installing a new tub/shower, vanity, and using existing toilet. We went to a home supply store and chose their higher end bath cabinetry and that worked very well. We bought and had Jel install a linen cabinet and above toilet cabinet from HD as well. This bath has the same tile as the guest but does not come up on the wall except around the bathtub. This bath also had all new wiring and plumbing and fixtures. This bath looks wonderful as well, and we retained the character of the original bath by choosing appropriate appointments. The price for the downstairs bath was about 25K and the upstairs about 18K. We absolutely got our $ worth.
