Mattos Co

Jel was very friendly when I first contacted him to come out to give me an estimate on a total kitchen remodel. We set up an appointment for the next day. Unfortunately, he didn't show. He only called several hours later to tell me he had gotten busy and lost his phone... I was meeting with another contractor at the time. Sorry, you seem like a nice guy, but a project this big and expensive that starts out with a no show no call (hours after the missed meeting is far too late) is no way I want to start a business relationship.

The in-house designer for Mattos can to my house and discussed my vision for the kitchen and budget. He took pictures and a full set of measurements. A few months later he sent a full set of plans based on my requirements.

I called Mattos Co. on April 11 and had to leave a message. The message said I had a fire at my 3-family home and there is extensive damage. Please call me a.s.a.p. No one returned my call. I have since hired another general contractor.

They started in Mid-November, and even with the holidays and the weather, we were enjoying our new space 10 weeks later. Jel's employees and subcontractors are all really nice guys, they are family men who were super respectful of my kids and our family. They use quality materials and are really responsive. An example of their super service is when a fuse blew in our furnace while they were working on it but we didn't discover that we didn't have heat until 5:00 on Friday night! They had a guy here 30 minutes later who was able to fix the problem and get our heat working again. This is one of many times I picked up the phone and got their attention right away. I am used to dealing with e-mail, having to write every little detail down, with these guys they would rather you just call or text what you need, but they hear you and I rarely had to ask them twice about something. I would work with them again in a heart beat, but we just did all the work we were planning to do! I highly recommend Mattos.

Mattos visited the house, listened to our vision for a new kitchen, and designed 3 different plans, including dimensions, specific cabinet and appliance choices and a rough quote for the renovation. It was very helpful in helping us to understand our options and the cost.

I paid for a special deal to have a plan or layout of my kitchen for future remodel. The person who came was nice and courteous and measure my kitchen. Then he said I would hear from them in about 2-4 weeks. I didn't hear a thing, i reached out and they said the overloaded with all the people who bought the deal for $75. So I was patient and waited. 6 months passed by and nothing. Then, I reached again and got finally a layout of my kitchen as a remodel solution. When I received the plan, it was something done very quickly and nothing in that kitchen was changed. No design, nothing different that the same information I had and I put together myself.

In the end, the project was carried out efficiently with good workmanship and professional supervision. I am extremely pleased with the final result which is not to say that there were some difficulties along the way. After three estimates were obtained from other companies, we chose Mattos, in large part on the basis of highly positive reviews on Angie's List. We did not take part in the "Big Deal" offer which appears to be the subject of a number of subsequent negative reviews on Mattos. Jel assigned Louis, one of his designers, to draw up the initial plans but after repeated efforts to email him, there were several promises but no design for nearly a month. We contacted Jel to indicate that we would halt the project unless we received an immediate response. Jel assigned another designer, Ana, to take on the task. She was knowledgeable, pleasant, and a joy to work with throughout the process. (We understand, from a recent review, that Louis is no longer with the company). Jel himself is a highly hands-on contractor, always there to answer questions and respond to issues. Perhaps even more important, he is a good listener, eager to please the client but always ready with another option if the client "appears" to be unrealistic. The demolition began on July 6, and the job was completed on September 4, 2012, with the last three weeks spent trying to get missing window openers and hinges for cabinets. The kitchen was usable in mid-August. The work went quite smoothly throughout. We made a decision to eliminate some cabinet doors in favor of open shelving which required additional granite work and delayed the project by about a week; the cost for the change order was reasonable. Greater communication between management and workers could improve performance. Subsequent to completion of the project, the heating unit failed to work and we called on Jel to fix the problem. He responded quickly as he had done throughout the remodeling whenever a question arose. We also called on Mattos to repair a roof, unrelated to the remodeling. We enthusiastically recommend Mattos Construction company.

The work started in June and was pretty much complete by the end of October. That's a quick turnaround. We interviewed several contractors. None could complete the job in that time frame; their estimates ran from $1.2M to $490,000. The quality of the work was excellent. They built us a high end home and those who see it are always impressed by the quality of the finishes. I was around the site constantly during construction and I could see that no corners were being cut, that the work was done responsibly. It is a well built home. We are especially pleased with the framing and the cabinet work. One of the great qualities of Mattos Co. was that we never felt that we were billed unfairly or being surprised with additional charges. I know that it's all to common to have a relationship with a contractor in which the budget seems to be a moving target. Jel, the owner of Mattos Co., is an honorable person, a quality we very much appreciate. Another thing we liked was that as a group, the workers were civilized people who were pleasant to be around. They took pride in their work. They hustled. The neighbors noticed this professionalism as well. We would hire them again gladly. Mattos did great by us. We were fortunate to find them.

A gentleman came on the arranged date, took measurements and photos, and told us that his company would send the plans in a few days. Sure enough, 4 days later we received some plans in the mail.

Jel emailed my husband to confirm that he would be here Friday at 11:30am to take a look at our bathroom and provide an estimate for a complete remodel/renovation. He did not show up and did not answer his phone when we tried calling him. He ended up calling back two hours later to apologize and explained that his brother was supposed to come to the appointment. My husband made an effort to be home in the middle of the day (which is not easy with his work schedule) so it was a big disappointment and inconvenience to have no one show up. We will not be rescheduling the appointment.

We purchased a Big Deal for kitchen design and measurement. Mattos had an unexpectedly large response to the offer and it took quite a while after the initial visit for the design to be completed. The design is very nice but much more extensive than we want to take on at this point.

person very punctual as of this date, I am still waiting for my drawings overwhelmed with requests so at least if I get a set of drawings, I'll be happy.

A technician was sent to the house who drew the kitchen layout and we got back a computer-aided designed plan by email followed by a follow-up phone from the design consultant herself.

I liked the guy and his designs very much. However, he never followed up with me after submitting the designs. Ultimately, I had to go with another company to complete the job.

I paid for a kitchen design when Mattos offered it through an Angie's List Big Deal. My initial impression was good: the designer came by and we talked about what I had in mind. He had good ideas and really seemed to know what he was doing. Unfortunately -- possibly because they were overwhelmed with responses to the Big Deal -- months went by with no foliow-up. I wasn't in a hurry, so I waited several months before calling. After several calls, they did send me a diagram. However, it showed only a few of the things we'd talked about, and it didn't include any measurements (one of the things I particularly wanted). I responded with a reminder about what we'd talked about, but didn't hear anything after several attempts. Finally, I called and asked for my money back. Very disappointing...

The demo was done in one day and immediately the next day the plumber came, the electrician, and then the insulation and walls went up. In about a week and one half the bathroom was beginning to take shape. In three weeks it was finished except for the glass door which was ordered but not installed. Still, I was able to move into the apartment and use the bathroom. My major difficulty was choosing the floor tile, and I didn't know until the day the floor was going down what I would choose. I decided that "less is more" so I went with carrara marble tiles and mosaics to match in the shower. The project manager, Fernando, was usually responsive when I had a question or needed help with suppliers of fixtures and tile. When I asked him to remove debris or clean up the hallway (which tenants also share), he took care of it the same day. All of the people who worked on the project were extremely polite and friendly. Now, every morning when I take a shower, I feel that I am treating myself to a luxurious spa experience. I think they did a beautiful job on the room. The challenge was that the room is really, really small, but it is designed so that I have enough room for everything.

I felt there wasn't a lot of value in their suggestions. I wasn't totally satisfied with their results.

Just wasted my money. I never believed big deal any more. What you pay what you get!

We had the designer work with us through the early project phases, making recommendations on layout and later color selections for cabinets, granite counter tops and back splash. He also steered us in the right direction for suppliers of tile, plumbing fixtures and lighting. Once the project was underway, the only hiccups we had were due to communication breakdowns. I suspect that is a common element to all renovations. In the end, the work was beautifully done, it was completed ahead of schedule and at the promised price. Every time we made a request for a slight change (type of cabinet closing, for example), it was done without question. All of the workers were very polite and friendly, and they all seem to enjoy their work. Most importantly, they each take great pride in their work product. We were SO pleased, we've extended the remodeling to include our 2-1/2 baths. I give them an A++, and have already recommended them to neighbors and friends.

We purchased the Angie's list big deal for a 75 dollar kitchen design. We are planning completely gut and renovate our current kitchen. The kitchen designer was a nice guy and clearly talented - but incredibly difficult to get in touch with. We reached out to the company in November and it took until April to get a design. We were originally told it would take 3-4 weeks, so it came as a surprise when it took forever. They were clearly busy with a number of projects, but it still took longer than I would have expected. The design was good - but not what we were looking for. If they had been easier to work with I would have continued to work with them to improve the original design, but it just wasn't worth the hassle. This is the last Angie's List deal I will purchase. We've purchased 4 over the last year or so and I was only happy with one of the companies (Rare Moving Company - they were awesome). Every other company was frustrating to work with - I was always made to feel like we were a side job not worthy of being treated like a paying client. I won't purchase another one until Angie's List makes improvements to the program.

They sent someone out in April after I called many times before in October. The person that came and did the measurement, but I did not hear back from him till about a few weeks ago. The service overall was poor. The time it took them to respond was not good.

The quote from Mattos at first seems a little high, but we decided to select them out of several quotes. The workers were on time, courteous, and professional. They didn't cut any corners on the preparation work, which is the bulk of a painting job. They removed 40 year old wallpaper from 84 year old walls and wood trim, and did a wonderful job making them look new and updated. I work from home, and the workers were courteous and tried to impact my work as little as possible. The workers also cleaned up after themselves everyday before leaving. When the painting job were completed, they did a great job putting things back - door knobs, fixtures, stairway railing. Considering the amount and quality of care of their work on this project, I would now say that their quote was a good deal. We are so satisfied, we plan on using Mattos for other work as well.

It was hard to get ahold of him and he cancelled twice at the last minute. He would say he'd get back to me and never did. He was nice when I did talk to him.

They were timely, extremely courteous and responsive. They were very flexible and accommodating with the schedules. They did excellent work and provided an unsurpassed value to the entire project. The whole project went smoothly and it was a pleasure to work with them. I would highly recommend them.

I did not realize initially that Jel was a general contractor, who typically does multi thousand dollar jobs.Despite the much smaller nature of the work I needed done, Jel immediately accepted to do it.When every other woodworking shop I contacted gave me a price tag of $1000+ and 2-3 weeks lead times, Jel proposed a very competitive price and a 3-day delivery!When his driver showed up with the cabinet and shelves, I noticed there was a problem with the shelves: I called Jel, and he had his shop redo them, and delivered them the next day.The cabinet looks fantastic.In short, excellent quality, best price, very responsive and professional company, will definitely use them again!
