Overall it went pretty well, although it took a little longer than what was originally quoted. When the linoleum was removed, they discovered some existing hardwood flooring on part of the floor that they decided to use. When I asked them if the nail holes from the previous linoleum installation on that section would show when the floor was finished, they assured me that they wouldn't. However, the nail holes show up quite a bit. I think I would have preferred if they used all new wood. All in all, we are happy with the floor. If it was an option, I probably would have given them a B+.

Well. The refinishing was awesome. I didn't love the threshold they installed, which was crooked and too narrow, but was very lucky and my uncle made me custom douglas fir thesholds instead! I would definitely hire them again for refinishing. They also patched a couple of boards that were damaged. Don't hesitate to hire them.

Jack and Michelle were very clear about the cost, explained what they were going to do and then did it in the exact time frame stated. The floors look beautiful which was quite a feat given what they looked like before the work was done. For the most part is was "dustless" but be warned, not perfectly so. The biggest headache is living with the furniture moved into various rooms while the work was done.
Description of Work: We refinished all of our floors and had a flooring added in one room.

We hired Connolly floors to patch/refinish the hardwood in our new house after pulling up a lot of carpeting left by the previous owners. My wife researched them on Angie's list and found that they were highly recommended. Initially they were very responsive and gave us a fairly competitive rate, cheaper than other quotes to do the refinishing. The cost of the patching was TBD, pending Jack's assessment of the damaged areas. At the time Jack (the owner) was also confident that they would be able use floorboards from the closets to do most of these repairs. Due to availability they weren't free to patch and refinish all of our floors until after our move. The exception to this was screening our bedroom floor and re-coating it a couple weeks prior to our move, which they were flexible enough to do. Jack showed up and my wife let him in so his crew could screen and coat the master bedroom. Jack also advised my wife, who was pregnant not to be around the floors while the polyurethane was outgassing. So I remained while they finished up and then gave them a spare key to the house so they could have access as soon as they were free to do the remaining work. The finishing of the main bedroom was a big logistical help and we were really appreciative that they were able to accommodate us. It's shortly after this point that our experience with Connolly Floor began to go downhill. During the intervening weeks, we hired a separate contractor to remove wallpaper, re-plaster and paint our walls in the entryway/stairwell, living room, dining room and 2nd bedroom. By the time Connolly floors began resurfacing the hardwood in those rooms, our new home was already noticeably improved. Jack's crew began to work resurfacing all the hardwood, including the stairs. They informed us and the painters that this would take approximately 3 days, during which time we would have intermittent access to the house while the polyurethane coats were drying. They also advised my wife that we would have to be out of the house the last day for the top coat, which at the time was a Saturday. Based on this information, our painters delayed work on our house for those days and my wife booked us a hotel room for Saturday night. During those intermediate days, as I was admiring the work that Connolly floors did, I began to notice that paint had been visibly scratched off all of the baseboards in the living room, dining room, bedroom as well as the stair risers. The baseboard damage was no doubt the result of the sander that was used on the floors. As I began to inspect other areas of the house I also found black marks and wall damage in numerous spots of our freshly painted stairwell, most likely caused by the handle of whatever tool was used to evenly apply the varnish. Perhaps the biggest eye sore was the longer than 3 inch stream of polyurethane that had dripped off the stairs along the painted base of the stairwell. This stain was very visible in the right lighting, especially because someone thought they could just abrade it off the surface but in doing so marred the paint so badly that it stuck out a like a sore thumb. Given all the work our painters had recently gone through, I was immediately disappointed that Jack's crew didn't to treat our home with the same degree of respect, I had come to expect from our painters. My wife left Connolly floors a number of emails to complain about the situation, but we didn't hear anything for a while. In the meantime we stayed in our hotel room while Jack's crew was scheduled to do the topcoat. Imagine our surprise the next day when it became evident that they never showed up. Eventually Jack's wife responded by email, explaining that they had been on vacation and had poor internet access. They also said they would fix everything and not to worry. In the meantime I left post-it notes on all the trouble areas, partly so Jack could see the damage but mainly so the painters would know what sections to touch up. Jack stopped by, while my wife and I were at work to assess the situation and to figure out the patching issue which still needed addressing. It appears that they tried to clean some of the spots themselves and removed a number of the post-it notes. Which I then had to replace because I wanted the painters to deal with it while they were still working for us. Later that week, Jack informed us that there may not be enough wood in the closets to finish the patching. I then mentioned to him that there was additional wood beneath the stairs that might be suitable. At this point in time it was a Wednesday. Our expectation as was communicated to us by Connolly floors was that they would finish the patching on Thursday and then the topcoat on Friday. My pregnant wife booked another hotel room for Friday, just in case, knowing that she could cancel it 24hrs in advance (hotels in the Boston area are expensive) if for some reason the patching wasn't completed and the topcoat was therefore delayed. The following day Jack left my wife a voicemail while she was working late, saying that he had finished the topcoat instead of patching. She asked if I could call him to figure out what was going on, since this was not what we were expecting. On the phone Jack explained that he wasn't able to finish the patching because the wood in the closets and under the stairs was a different thickness from the wood used in the dining and living rooms. He then basically assumed that we were in a hurry to get this work done and decided to go ahead and finish the last coat on the floors. On the phone, I tried desperately to contain my growing frustration as I confirmed with him that we would now need to get a hotel room for that night as my pregnant wife should not be around the fumes. This whole situation was further aggravated by the fact that neither of us had a change of clothes and wouldn't be able to access our bedroom which was upstairs until the topcoat dried the following day. That Friday when we were able to see the floors, they did indeed look nice, minus the sections that were never patched. Among the additional surprises left by Jack and his crew were additional missing paint on our newly painted front door interior, and the baseboard under the stairwell. The sample piece of floorboard under the stairs that Jack first removed for “patching” purposes was replaced with another piece that naturally was a different color, split and also uneven with the floor. I should point out that this damage to painted surfaces was after our painters fixed everything and we had repeatedly cautioned Connolly floors to be careful going forward. We were especially keen on this point, since the painters in some cases had to repaint entire sections around the stairwell because touch-ups didn't blend well with the older paint. I also noticed that Jack or one of his men also decided to leave some of the split and splintered wood in our recycling bin which was full and sitting at the curb for trash day. As I tried to remove over twenty pieces of split wood at night with a flashlight, I began to wonder, “Why would someone do this?” It was at this point that Connolly floors sent us an invoice for the work that had been done, they stated that they would need to contact their wood supplier before they would be able to finish the patching. We took this opportunity to see if they would indeed stand by their word and make things right, we pointed out the numerous pocket expenses that we had incurred since they started owing to negligence, lack of communication or poor judgment on their part. All in all this amounted to about $364 for repainting, a wasted hotel night, and the additional booking fee we had to pay for a hotel on short notice. Thankfully they agreed to deduct this amount and to send us a new invoice. Their revised invoice noted the difference as a “discount” and also dropped the line about finishing the patching work once their supplier got back to them. Once our check cleared, we found our spare key in our mailbox, obviously their way of communicating that they were done with us. In summary and all honesty, I think our hardwood floors are much improved in appearance. I will however, offer the following suggestion on how Connolly floors should improve their customer satisfaction. First, they would be better served if they were better at communication once a job begins. I believe Jack's wife handles most of the email and during this process I began to wonder how much of the information conveyed to them by email actually gets directly to him. As professionals in this area, they should take precautions when working in someone's house to prevent damage while carrying out their work. And frankly, they should treat their job as if they were working on their own home. For instance if you are going to pull up a piece of floorboard, it's not that hard to cover a baseboard with a towel to prevent your prybar from damaging it. And if there is no way for you to avoid damaging baseboards with your sander, clearly communicate this upfront with your customer. We could easily have requested our painters hold off on baseboards until the floor was done if they had bothered to say something. Also in this day and age, I take issue with people that are incapable of admitting any wrong doing on their part. At no point did Jack apologize, much less acknowledge that his men damaged our walls and baseboards. The fact that in their mind they addressed our out of pocket expenses as a discount, leads me to believe that they see themselves as the victim in this situation, dealing with overly picky home owners, when in fact they do themselves the disservice of not being honest with themselves that they have some room for improvement.

Starting from the email contact, it was very easy to work with them. They were prompt in emailing and very clear on their invoices, so there was no doubt on the work being completed. The workers showed up promptly, worked quickly and were polite. They gave us a timeline and stuck well to it, which I appreciated. The floors came out fabulous and we plan on hiring them again for two more rooms in our home. Highly recommended!

Connolly Floors provided great service all around. They quoted us a price about 40% less our other quote. They refinished hardwood floors in our master bedroom and they look great. They were very efficient and explained each day what they did. Most importantly, furniture delivery men put a couple of scratches in the floor about a week after we had them done. We emailed Connolly Floors to have them take a look for a property damage quote for the delivery company, and within 48 hours they were able to come out and fix the scratches free of cost. Would hire Connolly Floors again in a heartbeat!

I contacted them through Angie's list. They replied on the same day and came over for estimate within two days. The owner, Jack came on time for the estimate. He explained the work in detail and suggested us to use the water based polyurethane which has very little odor, so we can stay safely and will not bother our next door neighbor in our condo. They came to work in a week. The whole job took two days. They arrived on time, drapped the opening to the 2nd floor, so we could stay there without breathing dust. The floor looks beautiful. All the scratch marks are gone. they even finished the area near the refrigeratoer door where the builder never bother to paint. They are easy to communicate through e-mail. always reply right away. I am very happy with their work.

We hired Connolly Floors to stain and refinish hardwood floors in three rooms, a hallway, and stair treads. During our initial consultation, Jack Connolly told us that we had three different kinds of wood in the various rooms, but that we could stain them to match. Taking his advice, and stain suggestion based on our style preferences, Jack?s crew went to work. In four days, Connolly Floors performed work which subsequent floor people have called ?appalling.? What?s worse, there were major flaws and failures in every phase of the work: 1. Sanding: the floors were very rough, unevenly sanded, and had significant scratches and marks from their sanding equipment. 2. Staining: the floors were not stained all of the way to the walls (as though someone with a paint brush just stopped staining a few inches from the edge of each floor), and the floors were blotchy, with dark and light spots throughout. The stair treads were practically black, much darker than other surfaces. 3. Finishing: the finish had air bubbles throughout, leaving an even rougher surface that the sanders did! It took two visits after the work for Jack to acknowledge that his crew made mistakes, which he finally recognized was ?an eye sore.? Notably, he would not admit mistakes when speaking with my wife, only to the man of the house. Every other expert (and person with common sense) looks at the floors and wonders how anyone could do so bad a job. I have asked for my deposit back, which they refuse. I have threatened to take them to court, which they ignored. Do not use Connolly Floors.

Response from Connolly Floors
First off let me start by stating that when Mr. [Member Name Removed] first contacted us his email stated he was looking for someone to repair his floors and to sand and finish. Mr. [Member Name Removed] only hired us to sand, stain and finish his floors. The following is his original email to us. I am in the process of buying a home in Malden with some flooring issues, noted below. Are you able to come see the place and give me an estimate on the work? I am scheduling some other estimates for 11/14. -lump in living room hardwood floor; hardwood feels detached from subfloor -unusually creaky hardwood floor in places -gaps in hardwood floor between different rooms -price re-staining hardwood floor in three rooms and hallway vs. N-Hance treatment -replace tile kitchen floor (within next 12-18 months) The first few pictures Mr. [Member Name Removed] posted of scratches and marks on his floor were not caused by us..They were already on his floors. He did not hire us to do any patching on his floors. The following is the email he sent us on December 22, 2015 right after we sent him the Invoice: Thank you both! I stopped in yesterday evening and saw that it looks beautiful. I did notice though that you left what appears to be a buffer behind the house. Did you pick that up this morning? This is the email he sent us on December 27, 2015: Hi Michelle - Is it possible to have Jack come out this week and look at a few issues? Specifically, there are some edges that did not get stained in the hallway, some prints where I walked through (in my socks) on Monday evening, and the stair treads, which look quite a bit darker than the other surfaces. [Member Name Removed] Please note where he stated a few edges and how HE WALKED ON THE FLOORS AND LEFT FOOTPRINTS With regard to the blotches on his floor, we tried to tell him that Maple did not stain well and the pictures he took are very much enhanced. As he stated about it was A FEW EDGES. We offered to re-sand and dye stain the Bedroom and Hall for him because we want out customers to be happy but he refused. Also, keep in mind that we did over 800 sq. ft. of flooring and a flight of stairs for this man. After all the emails about first the floors are beautiful, then there were a few edges to all of a sudden on January 4th the floors were terrible and he isn't paying us and wants his deposit back, I hope that anyone reading his review will look at all the discrepancies. Not only will he not be getting his deposit from us but I sent him an Invoice for the Balance due us. I did in good faith take off the cost for the bedroom and hall (Maple floors) because there were some edges that were blotchy and even though we were going to redo these rooms for him I still was trying to work this out with Mr. [Member Name Removed]. I hope that anyone reading this review will further read the many, many reviews we have with an "A" rating and understand that this review from Mr. [Member Name Removed] does not reflect what happened accurately. Thank you for the time you took to read our response to this matter. Jack & Michelle Connolly Connolly Floors

Excellent experience. We scheduled the job before closing on the purchase of a new home. We had to move furniture in by a certain date because we were selling our other house, so It was critical to get the job done on time. The job started on time and they worked the weekend to ensure it was finished in time. The floors look beautiful, and they did a great job of containing and cleaning the dust from sanding. Also repaired a few damaged areas of the floors. The final price came in below the original estimate. Quality job, done on time, below estimated price. That's about all you can ask for. I would definitely recommend.

One of the reasons we chose Jack and Michelle of Connolly, beyond their solid ratings on Angie's List, was because they were very prompt and helpful on email and phone whenever we had questions. We were on a tight schedule between closing on our house and moving in, and couldn't risk any delays. The price was fair and the work they did was great. We are definitely happy with how things turned out and would recommend them.

Jack was on time to take measurements for the quote. It took him about a week to email a final quote and the price was pretty reasonable. The bare floors were delivered to the apartment a couple days before Jack started his work by a separate company. Jack does not do demo of old floors - so I had to have someone remove my old tile floors. The floor underneath was pretty warped and slanted but Jack was able to level everything out very nicely. The whole process took about 5 business days and the floors came out great. Jack and his wife were very prompt in responding to any questions I had making the renovations I was doing go that much more smoothly. I won't hesitate to give them a call next time I do renovations!
