Jack and his crew arrived on the scheduled day and got down to business. He and his men sanded and finshed the floors. It took a couple of visits to apply each of the coats and to let them dry, but it was well worth it. He did a wonderful job -- I couldn't be happier. My father was just as delighted. I would recommend him to anyone that is looking to get their floors done. Once Jack gives you the estimate, that's it. There are no additional hidden costs after the fact like some other businesses stick in. His prices are very fair and his work is excellent. I would definitely use his company again in the future and I suggest you do too!! You won't be disappointed. Thank you Jack!!!
Description of Work: I spent much time researching Angie's List for someone to refinish my kitchen/dining room floor. I noticed Jack's company immediately because of all of the excellent reviews. I did notice one unfavorable in-depth review, but decided to check the company out regardless. I contacted the company via e-mail on a Wednesday and received an immediate response and set up an appointment for that Saturday at 9:00A. Jack was right on time, friendly and informative. He explained what work would be done and how much time it would take and answered my quesitons. I found him quite trustworthy. As a mater of fact, my father house is right next to mine, I had so much confidence in the work Jack was going to do for me, that I asked him for an estimate for his floors as well. Michelle, Jack's wife, got right back to me with a favorable estimate and we set a date for Jack to do both of the houses at the same time.

Connolly floors was a great learning experience. They came right on time and gave us a good price for the flooring to be refinished and some patch work. They were tentative and responsive and flexible as well as they were willing to accommodate us into their schedule depending on the contractors schedule to install cabinetry. In the end we did not go with Connolly floors as we decided to do them ourselves as we had some extra time, but in the future after doing the work I would certainly reach out to them and appreciate what they do.

Jack and crew were very professional and flexible with my crazy work schedule. The floor looks better than i thought possible given the age and traffic over the years. I would be happy to supply anyone with before and after pictures. I highly recommend Jack Connolly if you need to have your floors refinished.

Jack came to our house and gave us an estimate within days of his visit. He took the time to answer all of our questions. We were moving to a new house and had a short time frame from closing to when we wanted to move in. Jack accommodated our time line and fit us in between other jobs. The work went just as he described and the projected was completed on time. Throughout the process Jack and Michelle kept us up to date on the progress through phone calls and e-mail. They were a pleasure to work with and the floors turned out beautiful!

Jack Conolly showed up with his crew exactly on time. Floor was sanded (no dust) and finished with gloss poly first coat on Thursday. Floor was buffed and finished with second coat Friday. Floor was buffed and finished with third coat Saturday. Jack and crew were knowledgible and friendly. I am happy with the job, in fact, I plan to hire them to sand and finish another bedroom and a flight of stairs this winter.

I called Jack initially to ask about him coming out for an estimate. He asked me to give him the square footage via email, not wanting to make the hour trek out to my house. I have heard of this happening before, so I sent him all the numbers as requested. He was quick in his response with an emailed estimate which was the lowest of all three I had collected. About a week later, I emailed again to let him know we had decided to go with his company and to hopefully set up a time for him to come out. I emailed twice and called twice but it wasn't until about two weeks later that he was actually able to set a date. He never responded to the emails and each time I called he said he would call back later when he was in front of his calendar. Thinking I was just catching him at bad times, I dealt with it and was happy to finally have three days nailed down with him. Another floor guy, who had come out to the house for an estimate, had mentioned doing the floors in stages so we could move our furniture within the house instead of clearing everything out. I mentioned it to Jack and he said that since it would take two rounds of three days for each stage, he would have to charge an extra $100 and he wasn't sure when he could fit us in for the second round. So, since it had been a battle to get the first three days scheduled, we decided to rent a Uhaul truck to park in the driveway and stay with a relative for the week. Between the time we confirmed the dates and when he was supposed to come (about two weeks) I emailed with some questions about whether I should go with a water based or oil based finish but got no response. He did mention it in passing the first day he came out, which tells me he did receive my email but didn't care to give me any answers before he was ready to start the work. The first day, he showed up on time with two other guys. They walked through the house and did mention that because we had some floors that were painted and a lot of old nails that needed to be set, that it would take one more day than originally planned. We let him know that would be fine since we were out of the house for the week, but asked that he let us know how things were going. I handed over my set of keys (old skeleton keys that have been used for the last 100 years) and we trusted him to get the job done. At the end of the first night, things looked promising. My husband stopped by the house and found most of the sanding done which was a relief since Jack never called to update us. At the end of the second night, my husband stopped by again, not much else had changed from day 1 except little bit of edging here and there; all the major floors that had yet to be sanded were still unsanded. We were willing to excuse the lack of work since that day was extremely hot but still no phone call from Jack. By the end of the third night, the only change was that some equipment had been moved and a test strip had been sanded on the remaining floors. At that point, both my husband and I stopped by and in the process our neighbors told us that Jack was showing up after 10am and leaving before 3pm every day. That night my husband called Jack. That is when Jack finally told us that this had turned out to be a harder job than he thought. The thickly painted floors upstairs (only two rooms) were more of an issue than he thought and required specialized sand paper. Jack also informed us (after us asking if there was anything else) that two of the rooms did have lead paint that he couldn't work on. He kept telling my husband that there was no way he could have known. My husband had to point out that this was now 8pm on day three and we had to call him to find out that there was even a problem, so while Jack knew about the issues there was no excuse for not informing us. All he could say was that this was the hardest job he's had in the last eight years, which is very hard for me to believe if he does indeed do work on older houses regularly. Our house is 112 years old, but in extremely good condition and except for the lead paint (which I completely understand avoiding) there is nothing that challenging. We did have two other estimates done and both of them talked about how straight forward this job would be. My husband ended the call by asking Jack to please call and give an update the next day as to how much longer it would take for him to finish the job and Jack agreed. 8pm on day four and my husband had to call Jack again to find out when he would be finished. Jack finally told us that he was able to get the first of three polyurethane coats down that day and that he would come extremely early day five to the get the second down so it could dry before he put the third on that evening. This push to finish more quickly was after my husband had to explain two or three times that we have been living out of my aunt's basement and a Uhaul truck in our driveway and that we needed to know when things would be done since we had to depend on others for our plan to work. By Friday night, I'm not sure how many coats were actually put down but it was enough to make the floors look better than they were. All in all the foyer, dining room, front staircase treads and upstairs hallway, master bedroom and one of the two guest bedrooms were actually done. The floors came out nicely as they are historical yellow pine but I almost feel it was more because of luck since Jack never talked to me about staining or what color I actually wanted my floors. The staircase was the only thing done haphazardly; they did broad sanding strokes on each tread and did not do the edging between the balusters. So now not only did he not stain the staircase to match the banister but even the treads have edges that are completely different colors. Lastly, the second guest bedroom (which we wanted done so it can become the nursery for our little one on the way) was left untouched not because the paint on the floor was lead, which it is not, but because the first guest bedroom with similar painted floors was too hard and Jack didn't want to deal with the second one. I will say they did clean up after themselves very well. Overall, I was highly disappointed with working with Jack Connolly. My husband and I appreciate working with old houses is never easy, but Jack was horrible at communicating any needs or issues that came up during the job; we literally had to call him to find out that we couldn't move back into our house until three days later than planned (and that was with an extra two days originally planned for a buffer i.e. five days after what it should have been according to his estimate). I am still confused as to how Jack not being able to work on 490 sq ft worth of rooms still resulted in him taking and entire week to finish and whether or not he even did any work for two of those days, but we ended up paying him in full just to be done with him. He did adjust the amount of sq footage on the invoice to reflect the work actually done, however he increased the price per sq ft because he "was not told about the painted floors and had to make multiple trips to Milford to finish the job that was started." Multiple trips resulting in him not actually doing any work while in our house is not something I wanted to pay for, however I never want to deal with him again. And to add insult to injury, he snapped in half one of my skeleton keys in the lock (because he was using the back door key in the front door lock) leaving the door disabled and unlocked for the entire time he was working. Again, he did not tell us this until the third day even though it happened day one..... Do Not Use This Company!!!

Response from Connolly Floors
First, let me start by stating that I clearly did respond to Member's Emails, and because she waited to book with us I told her that we were extremely busy but would do our best to fit her in, which we did..However, when she wanted to do the job in two parts we had no place to put her after the dates that we gave her because we were booked up. We agreed to drive the hour to Milford to help her out so we thought because she said she wanted to use our company. Not once in any of her emails did she mention that the floors were painted or we would have been prepared with the heavy paper needed to sand them or we would have told her that the floors needed to be tested for lead because we are not licensed to do them. When I got there and realized that the floors were thickly painted I called my wife to find me a floor company in the area so that I could go get the materials needed to do this job, so this took up part of the day and we had to test the paint on the floors which also took time. The floors were so tough to work on it took longer than expected and I did speak to her husband about this. Getting there at 10 and leaving at 3 was due to the travel time that we incurred by doing this job for her. I also went our there at 4AM to coat the job so I could go out again later that day to put the other coat on to help this customer because the job took much longer than expected. The increase in the amount per sq. ft. was not because she lived in Milford it was because we were not made aware that the floors were thickly painted and that the job was going to take as long as it did and we traveled quite a distance every day till it was finished and tried to give her the best job possible with what we had to work with. Also, I do not know what she is talking about with the color because we did not stain these floors so if the stairs are not the same color that has nothing to do with anything that we did, it could be because there was so much paint on them she didn't know what was underneath until we finished. I feel that we provided the service to the best of our ability and she was charged more than a fair price for this. As far as the key, it was just an accident. When she handed us the key I just assumed it was to the front door since I was not told anything different and the key did in fact snap in the door. It was just an accident...nothing more.

Jack did a fabulous job. I initially scheduled a refinish of our 100+ year old pine hardwood floors for about $1300. When Jack arrived, he told us that due to the age and condition of the floor, he would not recommend a full refinish, just a buff and one coat application and if we do a full refinish, we would have more problems.I sincerely appreciated his honesty and judgement, as many others would simply have done the work because it meant more in their pockets. Thank you!

I do apoligize but I do not recall an email from this customer...I make a point to treat all customers with the utmost respect...I have been extremely busy and if I missed returning a call to give this customer a quote all I can do is say this is not how I conduct business as anyone can see with the ratings I have received from Angie's List customers that I have serviced. I will truly work on this not happening to anyone else in the future and to the member, I am truly sorry for any inconvience this may have caused.

I contacted Jack Connolly through Angie's list. He was responsive, punctual and came to look at the job a few days after my call. His price was the best among the three bids I received. He even included a 10% discount because I came through Angie's list. Once I accepted his bid, we set a date within 3 weeks of the proposal. He arrived on the scheduled date and did a fantastic job. I couldn't have been any happier. The floors came out great and he even was flexible as I was deliberating over what type of gloss to use (high vs. semi).

Connolly was one of three highly rated floor refinishing companies I found on Angie's List. I called each one to arrange for quotes. Of the three companies I called: - One contractor arrived on time, despite some heavy road construction in my area - Another arrived 45 minutes late, with no explanation or apology (and no construction, as it was evening) - Connolly was a no-show; still haven't heard anything back I have not selected a provider yet, but it certainly won't be Connolly.

I picked Jack after getting 4 quotes. A few key criteria made me choose him over other highly rated hardwood floor companies on Angies: --He does the work himself (along with additional men, depending on size of the job). Often, the owner of the company comes to do the quote, but then sends in someone else to do the work. I like to know that the owner of the company will be in my house doing the work. I think that many benefits can follow from this, including accountability and quality. --He clearly knows his trade very well. He was able to tell me about the wood used in my floors, why certain areas were slightly discolored in band-like patterns (evidently due to laminate being put on top a long time ago), the cause of a very dark splotch (evidently battery acid from an old-fashioned radio), etc. One can tell that he has been doing this a long time, and that he knows and cares about his work. --He actually puts down three layers of polyurethane. Everybody will tell you that they do, but if you question them, you will find out that some actually use a lacquer sealer (not polyurethane) for the first of the three layers. They do this because the lacquer dries very quickly, and they are able to put a coat of poly on top of it on the same day. However, this can result in poor adhesion between the lacquer and the poly, which will result in peeling. --He had a fantastic price given how highly rated he is. --He is an incredibly nice guy. And now that the work is done, I can add a few more reasons that I will use him again when we finish the rest of our floors: --He and his team were punctual, arriving exactly when he said they would, and finishing when he said they would. --They left the house perfectly clean, without any dust. --When I told Jack that a few areas (in corners, and on the edge of the stairs) were a bit rough, he came over immediately and fixed them. --Finally, and most importantly, the floors look spectacular.
Description of Work: They sanded and refinished 3 rooms and a hallway (approximately 500 sq ft) and a set of stairs.

I got Connolly's info off of Angie's List. I contacted Jack on the phone and was able to schedule a free estimate appointment right away. The next day Jack came in, looked at the place and gave me a very reasonable price. He also offered to sand and polish the worn out parts of our kitchen floor in the same price! On the day of installation, they came right on time and although they estimated a day for the job, his guys finished up the work in about 6 hours. Jack came in himself to check on his guys and if they needed anything. They did a neat job. It was very nice working with Jack. If I have any flooring needs in the future, I would definitely go to Connolly again.

We found Connolly Floors on Angies List and were able to get right through to Jack Connolly on the phone. He met us at the house that we were going to buy, and he gave us an estimate. We found him to be thorough and professional and genuinely engaging. He agreed to come in and re-do the floors after we closed on the house, while the house was empty. And he agreed to do this on a weekend. At the last minute (ugh, don't use our bank) the sale was delayed by three days, and Jack adjusted quickly -- rescheduling his crew. The floors look wonderful. Our new downstairs neighbors came by for dinner last night, and they lauded the floors -- so we told them about Connolly Floors. And now we're telling you. Great service and quality.
Description of Work: Jack Connolly and his crew sanded and refinished approximately 1,500 square feet of hardwood floors -- and additional 26 stairs. Five areas in the floors were patched, and one of the stairs was replaced with new wood.

We've used Connolly Floors twice now and both times we received exceptional service. Jack and his crew pulled up carpeting in our circa 1896 home (a total of 3 rooms, plus one hallway), and refinished oak floors underneath. The floors look FANTASTIC, the service was excellent, the price was very reasonable, and Jack was a pleasure to work with. Can't say enough good things. We'll definitely use them again.

Handled the soft wood with no gauging. Had no problem when I asked for a topcoat of semi-gloss (instead of the high-gloss, wet-looking finish most refinishers seem to prefer). Other refinishers I talked to weren't interested in a job this small. Pleasant and punctual.

Jack was very helpful when we called to discuss the work, though we were not closing on the house for a couple of weeks. He called us around the closing to check in, and told us his team would be at the house Sunday morning. My husband waited for over an hour and called Jack; they had to reschedule for Monday. We had seen this was the biggest challenge, so were not surprised. When they did arrive on Monday, they removed and disposed of the carpets in several rooms, revealing nice hardwood floors. Jack's team sanded them down and refinished the floors and two staircases in time for us to move in (though there was a little pause in the work for a couple of days that had us worried with rain in the forcast). The floors look and feel AMAZING, there is little dust to clean up, and we are very pleased with his work. I would use Connoly floors again.

I have a house that was built in 1928 and I've never had my floors done before. After reading some reviews on Angieslist I had a few companies come by for estimates. The range varied drastically and after speaking with the owner, Jack, I chose Connelley Floors. Jack, has a lot of experience and he delivered everything he promised and more. The floors came out absolutely PERFECT. I couldn't be more happy (this is coming from someone who has a degree in Interior and Architecture Design). Every step of the process- sanding, staining and poly was excuted perfectly and without any hitches. His crew is great and did a great job. And... Jack's price was more than fair. From my experience, you can't go wrong hiring this company, I'm lucky to have found them.

They worked quickly and efficiently and were very nice/easy to deal with. They also charged less than competitors, which I appreciated since I was on a very limited budget. I was very surprised to see that the risers weren't done -- I assumed they would be included, but they were never mentioned and I didn't think to ask. So those are in their original condition, showing scratches and now have a different finish from the treads and flooring. Also, I was never asked about what kind of finish I would like and, admittedly, didn't ask so ended up with an oil-based product that produced severe fumes for at least a week and that provided a really shiny finish (which I don't really like). I have to take some of the blame since I didn't ask about these issues, but I also wish the company had talked about my options beforehand.
Description of Work: The back stairway in my two-family house had purple shag rug and the landings had old vinyl tiles. Connolly removed both and refinished the floors and stairs.
