Jon and Steve were a pleasure to work with and have in our house for the entire course of the project - which took about a week. They asked questions as they worked if there was anything uncertain, they were polite, clean, and responsive. We were submitting the work for our insurance claim, and Jon made sure to itemize every detail and help us to submit the invoice. Jon planned the project out pretty meticulously and worked in stages every day. The house was so clean at the end of each day that the area he was working in was always cleaner than the rest of our house! The work looks beautiful! The painting is perfect and exact and we have gotten many many compliments. I will certainly be calling Solid Root again in the future.

Jon's work is impeccable! Friends and neighbors have even commented on how great the projects he has done look. He is very prompt, takes pride in his work (and it shows), conscientious of how I want the end product to look. Pays attention to details. Cleans up after the project Is done. He even came back to replace a piece of stair post that weathered and cracked. You don't find many carpenters who will come back to repair something.I highly recommend Jon for your projects.
Description of Work: Jon has built kitchen cabinets, demo'd and rebuilt a custom deck with intricate detailed rails for our condo, and recently demo'd and rebuilt the front entry stairs with mahogany treads at our new house. I will have him come back and build us built-in cabinets for your TV room next.

This is the second project that i have asked Jon to work on. In both cases, the work was exceptional. For this project I needed two wide double doors to close off a storage area under my porch. Jon designed, built, and installed the doors and they more than exceed my expectation. The design and execution fit seamlessly with the existing carpentry on the exterior of the house and most people are surprised to realize that they are new. I highly recommend Jon and Solid Root for your carpentry needs.

Jon designed, built, painted and installed a full wall of built-in custom book shelves, from floor to ceiling, to match the existing shelves. The existing woodwork was not easy to match, with much decorative trim and a complicated joint between old and new, but Jon seamlessly integrated the new bookshelves. The workmanship is excellent and working with Jon was a pleasure. He completed the work on schedule, quickly, and expertly, and he cleaned the site up very well upon completion. I would highly recommend Solid Root for all woodwork!

Jon and Al, installed the framework for a pocket door between our kitchen to dining room. They also opened up the wall between the dining room and sunroom and installed a fabulous glass pane door. They had to move some electrical, and pullout some cabinets to accommodate the new doorways and replaster. All in all it took a week and they did a great job. I've used them several times in the past and they have always had the highest quality of professionalism, work and always come up with innovative solutions when unexpected issues arise.

Don't know what we would have done without Mr. Santillo's help! Our daughter was moving from one apartment to another so it seemed like a good opportunity to have some wooden shelves and cabinets refinished (an extensive modular unit with many pieces). Mr. Santillo took the pieces away (thus sparing us having to move them) and delivered them to her new apartment when promised. His work was very high quality and he was extremely personable and dependable.
Description of Work: Mr. Santillo refinished a number of wooden shelves and cabinets that had water rings and other stains. He had to dis-assemble and re-assemble these pieces in various configurations (desk, book shelves, etc).

I called John because during rain storms water would pour out of the roof gutter and the water splashing would get under the door sweep causing the wood floor to bow up. John came out, saw what was happening and recommended a storm door. We had wanted one anyway and the more protection the entry had from the outside environment the better. I purchased the door and sweep from a nearby supplier, John picked them up. He climbed a ladder up to the 3rd floor gutter, added some caulking behind it and a few pieces of sheet metal on the edge to keep water from flowing over. He then installed the storm door, adjusted the door sill and painted the exterior door trim. When it came time to install the new door sweep he found out that the supplier had given him the wrong one. He said the next time he was available he would go back and get the right one and install it. About a week later he came and installed the sweep. John was friendly and easy to talk to. I thought he was very responsive; understand that he doesn't have a secretary so you have to be willing to leave a message if he doesn't answer and wait a few hours or occasionally a day to get a response. That wasn't a problem for me, he was more responsive than most companies that have dedicated staff answering the phone. All together it was about 6 or 7 hours of work, he did a great job and his pricing is great. He even took the time to write a letter for me (on request) regarding the work he performed and the condition of parts of the house. I highly recommend his services.

On 3/22, Jon agreed to meet me to review the job which involved extensive rough and finish carpentry. We met on 3/29. It took almost 2 hours of my time to show him all of the work involved. He told me that this was an interesting project. He also told me that he would have to do some "figuring" over the weekend and that I would hear from him on Monday, 4/2. As of 4/15, I have never heard from him. While I think he is rude and irresponsible, I have no knowledge of his skill. I would suggest that you ask him what qualifications an employer must have, and make certain you have those qualifications, before you seek to have him accept you as a client or even keep his word to you. I am gut renovating a house and deal with nearly 20 subcontractors. Every one of them follows through and does superb work. I suggest you pass on this one and find someone more mature who doesn't waste your time.
Description of Work: No services were performed. Jon spent 2 hours looking at the job and that was the last I ever heard from him.

Response from Solid Root Renovations LLC
This is a true cut and paste; you can't make this stuff up Dear Jon, I most sincerely apologize to you for not immediately thanking you for the honor to be granted such an extensive interview by you. I understand that you are most likely a carpenter whose standards exceed those of Jesus, himself, and I also understand that a carpenter of your caliber should not be expected to bother writing a note to an interviewee telling him he didn’t meet the high standards you have for those for whom you offer your immensely gifted skills. I only hold a BA, and two post graduate degrees from Ivy schools, but I would assume you prefer only to work with those who hold MD degrees in addition. Perhaps in the future, when you interview someone not worthy of your extraordinary work, you could shorten your interview so people like me don’t have to waste an hour of their time showing you the work to be done in good faith. Imagine the review I will be giving you on Angie’s list. I will try to warn people that unless they think they can overwhelmingly impress you, they shouldn't bother to contact you and waste your valuable time. I hope this will help filter the undesirables, like me, from wasting your time. Best regards, [Member name removed]

He was prompt with his estimate response, showed up on time and completed the work in one day. While I was not home, my wife was and my school-age children were in and out with school and activities. Jon was conscientious and worked around our family's comings and goings. He was left alone in our home for a few periods during the day. He cleaned up after his work which required lots of sawing and left our house at least as clean as he found it. We are very happy with Jon's work and my wife was happy with the way he managed the work in our home.
Description of Work: Jon came in an did some finish carpentry for us. We had an interior doorway and interior window opening resulting from an addition built by the previous owner of our house. These two openings had no molding/trim around them and didn't match the rest of our 1906 house (wide block moldings). The openings weren't exactly square or consistent in dimension but Jon's work looks fantastic. He had to work around several problem areas where the new molding had to integrate with existing base molding.

Jon was very quick at reply to my email. We had some difficulties with scheduling but Jon eventually made it to the house. He spent 2 hours discussing the projects and taking measurements. I received the estimate a week later, eliminated one of the closet remodeling project got a new estimate and agreed on the work. Jon came back to verify all the measurements and to show me samples for the lock. Once Jon was ready he emailed me to set up a time. He came on a Saturday and worked for about 5 to 6 hours to do the work. He had already pre-cut and pre painted the shelves but brought his saw for finishing details . He did an excellent job. He really pays attention to small details and the quality of his work. He clearly cares about doing high quality work, and esthetics and I really appreciate that. He also cut one of the old shelves down so I could use for another part of the closet. He cleaned after himself and removed all trash. He is very professional, and well mannered. I highly recommend him.

We were expecting a carpenter but got much more. John is very skilled carpenter-wise, but also is able and willing to take on other roles. We were having coordination difficulties with plumbers/plasterers/captentry/tile work, and he stepped in and coordinated all that work wonderfully. A very capable fellow, and we hope he'll be back in the Spring for a couple of other projects.

Jon did an outstanding job and was a pleasure to deal with. He arrived on time for the estimate and arrived as promised during the job. He was pleasant, personable, and flexible in accommodating our schedules and our ideas for the closet. His workmanship is very high quality and he made the closet to look as if it was original to the room. He was also tidy and cleaned - including our wooden stairs for water drops! - before departing each day. We are very, very happy with the result. He was a bit more expensive than our other quotes; HOWEVER, I think that the quality of the job is reflected in the cost and I think we received value for the expense. I would hire Jon in an instant again.
Description of Work: Jon built a wall-to-wall closet and shelves in our bedroom. The closet has 3-doors with 3 partitions inside the closet to allow for multiple levels of clothes bars. Jon also built shelves to make use of an odd cut-out and allow us to display pictures, knick-knacks, etc. The house is circa 1930, so it was important to us to have the doors and all the exterior trim mirror the existing doors and woodwork. The shelves are adjustable, so that we can change their use as desired. Because of the age of the house, our floors and walls are not perfectly level or perfectly square, respectively. Jon adjusted the closet, the doors, and the shelves for these quirks.

as noted above, it went great. Jon gets a strong thumbs up from me (and my wife)! No question we'll use him again when we need a carpenter.
Description of Work: we needed a cabinet maker to build 2 custom radiator covers. The radiators are each in a corner, alongside some decorative molding, so the covers had to be fitted with some intricate cuts. Jon was great. There was nothing about dealing with him or his workmanship to complain about. He built them in his shop precisely the way we agreed to. I feel like we got a great deal on the price when it took him an additional 2+ hours to install them!

We had contacted Mr Santillo because of his EXCELLENT reports on Angies list as well as his being a very local company. He quicky returned my phone call, and came over a few days later. He was very nice, talkative and had brought some brochures on the work we wanted done. He took some measurements and told us he would email a proposal to us. I asked him if he would mind including a couple of references, people we could talk to that had this type of work done on their house, and his response was...look over my reports on Angies list. I did I explained, but wanted to speak to actual people. We waited 11 days without hearing anything, so I sent the following email and recieved the response below. We will not be using him, nor can I recomend him to others. MY EMAIL: "Hi...we are deeply disappointed that we have not recieved a quote from you. We were glad to see you were a local company, and had strong ties to the community. If you were not interested in the job, we deserved an email. Thank you, Karen and Chris Riek" His response 3 days later: "Please excuse the tardiness of this message. I had an estimate ready to be sent out to you, but I will not send it due to the tone of your email. Regards"

Jon came out promptly to examine the door and suggested we not replace it, but instead fix the frame and weatherstrip the door. We scheduled the work to be done a few weeks later. He was extremely communicative via e-mail and phone, came exactly on schedule at 9 in the morning, and was unfailingly polite to my wife and child who were at home during these repairs. The door not only looks great now but is also substantially less drafty, which will save us serious money on our future heating bills. Jon promptly sent an invoice charging exactly what he had estimated, plus $35 for a new lintel he installed (he even apologized for that minor additional charge!). We plan to use him now for a larger job of building custom closets in one hallway. He's a very pleasant and professional person to deal with.

We have used Jon in the past and called him again for some additional work. Jon does good work at a fair price. He's responsive, both to emails and phone calls. He usually can schedule the work to be completed within a few weeks. He did a nice job removing old, fixed shelving in two linen closets and patched the walls well, which were then finished/painted by others. He later returned on short notice to install an adjustable, plastic coated wire shelving system. The closets came out great. He also completed some fire-stopping of open gaps in our furnace room using a hardening fire-retardant foam; he even used some spare fiberglass he had to fill a large gap. Jon provided all materials needed for the job, and did a nice job with clean up. We will continue to call on Jon for carpentry and general repair work as needed.

I learned of Jon from another well-thought-of woodworker. Jon is an all-around top quality guy. Great ethics, great personal skills, great woodworking and general contracting skills. Jon is my go-to guy when anything goes wrong, or needs work, at my place. If Jon says he doesn't feel comfortable doing a particular type of job, he says so, and is willing to help me find someone else to help (for example, he told me he didn't feel comfortable doing roofing). If he says he can do a job, he is able to schedule a time in the future to do the job and I can trust him to be there when that time comes, and finish the job in the allotted time. Plus, I feel safe leaving him & his co-workers around with my wife and 8 year old daughter.

I created a rough design using Google's free Sketchup software. Jon edited the design and designed all the details. He provided many samples to choose from for the crown molding and mantle design. He provided several photos as examples. The total price was very reasonable and he was able to match his design and the "bells and whistles" to the budget. He oversaw and assisted the plumber in running the new gas line for the fireplace. He had to cut into the finished ceiling in the basement to run the gas line and restore the ceiling to its original condition. You'd never know anything was done to it. He took the measurements and built everything in his cabinet-making shop off site and then installed everything in a matter of a few days. The workmanship and attention to detail is amazing. He cleaned up the work area in our house every day, was always professional and he clearly takes great pride in his work. I couldn't be happier.
Description of Work: Custom built cabinets, bookshelves, mantle, tilework to enclose a new gas fireplace. I purchased the fireplace and had it installed. Jon designed the built-in to enclose the fireplace. All solid oak with stain that perfectly matches the rest of the house. Jon also hired the plumber and electrician to run the gas line and wire the new fireplace and all the lighting and controls for the built-in
