I am so disappointed with this Contractor. On 8-07-19 we signed a Contract for the asphalt paving of a parking in Gardner. The person who was giving me the quote had a very short fuse. He had written it using standard language that I felt did not adequately describe the scope of the work. I had a mound of dirt with some vegetation alongside a metal fence and I wanted that mound removed. I showed it to him and asked him to add some wording to the effect that the paving needs to be all the way to the fence. He became very agitated that I was asking to add a word into the contract but he did add “up to the fence” after he screamed at me. Also I asked him to put down specific foot measurements of the parking and driveway and a statement that the area under the trash container and in front of the back door is included as they are part of the parking. He said “Don’t worry, I have put here a driveway and parking lot and we will do it all” and he did not put sq. feet or any specific measurements. I trusted them and that was my mistake. These people cannot be trusted. The job was scheduled for 10-1-19. The crew came and the owner (different from the person who gave the Quote) was there too. I have them the Plot Plant of the parking and driveway and showed them the mound with bushes that needed to be removed in order to pave to the fence and to my amazement the owner ordered the crew to drop everything and leave, he told me I was asking for too much to be paved and that he is not doing it. What shook me is that he refused to listen to me telling him that paving the parking to the fence is in the signed Quote/Contract. I was amazed that he simply refused to talk about it or even to listen to me and refused to fulfill his contract. If he didn’t like the size of the parking in the Plot we could have talked about it and I would have been flexible but he refused to even listen. I own 11 rental buildings, 45 apartments and I have worked with countless contractors over the past 21 years. My evaluation of this Contractor is that both the Estimator and the Owner have very short fuses, act like Divas (maybe because there aren’t enough pavers and so their services are in high demand), do not spend the time to write detailed quotes which opens up potential for misunderstanding and arguments of this sort and sign Contracts which they don’t keep.

Response from Miller's Asphalt Paving
When we priced this job we originally priced it for more but he asked if we could match another pavers price so we agreed. We were scheduling out 2 months when he decided to give the job but because he needed the job done sooner we rearranged our schedule to accommodate him. When the secretary asked for a deposit of 10% like we do all our customers he replied “ the estimator said he didn’t need to give a deposit” so I said well if that’s what he said that’s fine. Come to find out our estimator said nothing of that in fact the owner said for him to give a deposit. so then when we arrived to the job that day he was making the crew do things that was not included and asking them to pave in the neighbors yard. So the owner came over to see what was going on. So they started to discuss what was going to be done the customer was making it way bigger and the owner said that’s more money the customer replied “ we will talk about that later” that’s usually a bad sign where not going to get paid. He threatened to sue us on the job site. Another sign. The owner did not have a good feeling about working for this customer. Especially when we did not get a deposit. We did not feel comfortable working for this customer so the crew left. Later he called the owner And asked him when he’s coming back? The owner said you have to give me a deposit first I don’t feel comfortable to work without one and he said no.

Initially, the price was right and the job "looked" great, But it turns out that when Mr. Miller tells you 3", he really means 1/2". Chipmunks chewed through the asphalt after 2 years. That's when I noticed I only received 1/2" rather than the 3" that I paid for. It was pealing up like a carpet. It took some convincing, but he eventually agreed to do the job over right, which meant digging it all up and starting over. Well, he lied to me again. All he did was put another layer over the first one. I asked the gentleman doing the work what he was told to do, he said just resurface. I told what I was expecting, and he called the boss. After a quick chat, he hand the phone to me and Mr. Miller laid right into me without giving me a chance to talk, saying it wasn't under warranty and he as doing the job and why was I arguing with him (I wasn't) I then said, "Fine, as long as you're OK with me posting that when you say 3" you really mean 1/2"...." He then yelled, "You can write whatever the F*#k you want on line, I don't care!! I'll pull my crew out of there right now!!" That's when I hung up on him. The crew did the half-baked job they were told to do and I'm writing the review he asked for. I'm sure I'll have to hire someone else to redo it in another 2-3 years. BTW - the crew was very nice and professional, so I hated giving such a low rating there. But their boss is a huckster.

I was very happy with the services provided. Stan came to scope out the job and provided us a very reasonable estimate before he left. I also got an estimate from another company (who scoped out the work via Google Maps and then it seemed they used our neighbor's driveway dimensions!), and Stan's estimate was about $3000 less. I quickly sent in a 10% deposit and we were able to get the paving scheduled about 3 weeks from then. They came promptly on the scheduled day, and completed the work with high quality that day. Very pleased!

Estimator came promptly and was pleasant. Wrote up estimate on the spot. Had the lowest estimate of three bidders. Almost $800 cheaper than next best estimate. However, I chose middle of three estimates. Maybe I shouldn't have since I am not quite satisfied with the contractor I did hire -- he did not angle the drive at quite enough pitch to drain properly. The one I chose included in the price about $400 for a cop to direct traffic. On my street someone was clearly needed to direct traffic. It was only after the job that it occurred to me that maybe Millers knows the town well enough that they could get away with having one of their employees direct traffic instead of hiring a cop. I don't know. Millers priced the job at $3800.

Their estimate was fair (we had received another one from a different company and they beat it by $2200 without knowing about the previous estimate). We scheduled the work. They came within the timeline given, got right to work, asked me to show them exactly what was to be done to make sure they had the information correct and completed the whole job in less time than quoted. The driveway looks awesome and they stuck to the estimate price. We would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: They dug up and re-paved our driveway (about 450 square feet). They also added a small walkway that connects to the front of the house and rounded the curb leading into our driveway that our car would run into.
The service was great, friendly, quick and the results are great. For the shed pad they dug up the area, leveled it and then put down a good 8inches (estimating) of stone. Will definitely contact them again come spring to seal the entire driveway.

Very good experience. I had a total of 3 estimates (the 4th from "the other guys" never showed up). Mr. Miller came right out after I called them. His estimate was by far the best, so I called the office to set up the job. The young lady in the office was very professional and complete. She told me just what to expect-The crew would leave the office at 6:30AM and arrive by 7:30. It should take 4-6 hours, and we need to stay off the driveway for 4 days. I was surprised by the short amount of time required for the job and said so. She verified the time and said "they have big equipment". At 7:15 of the scheduled day I looked outside and saw the foreman standing in the driveway sizing up the job. They went right to work and were complete by 11AM. Very professional crew. They did indeed have a lot of "big equipment" and the job seemed to go very smoothly. Although the contract called for a 2" layer topped off with a 1.5" layer, the supervisor of the job asked if it was OK to do a heavy single layer with a different material. I was a little concerned about how smooth the final driveway would be but said OK, The driveway came out great. It actually appears to be thicker than 3.5" (I'd estimate at least 4"). We are very pleased with the job done my Miller Asphalt.
Description of Work: Completely stripped the asphalt from our 80', 1950 sq ft driveway and turnaround. Added a layer of crushed stone, compacted the stone and topped it off with at least 3.5 inches of asphalt.

I found this company on Angie's List. They came within a day of my call to give me an estimate. It was easy to make the booking. I had to reschedule due to a conflict and they were very accommodating. The driveway was done when they said it would be and looks really nice. I would use them again in the future to seal coat again and potentially repave. A very good company to work with.

Stan was prompt to come out and give a quote. He was the only quote that we got as I thought the price was very fair. The cost included grade, gravel, and asphalt. The driveway looks great and he was able to work me in two weeks after the initial quote. The entire process only took 12 hours. We recently had a downpour and the rain didn't pool at all on the driveway like it did on the dirt driveway. I highly recommend Miller's paving.

VERY disappointed by this whole experience!! The quote was done by Stan's brother several weeks ago, and seemed reasonable. The work was to include all necessary permitting as well as preparing and paving a spot next to our existing driveway. However, there were many discrepancies after he left. First of all, we measured the area and it was actually at least 125 square feet less than what he had quoted. They were going to charge more to excavate roots, if needed, (which was reasonable) but they couldn't tell me if it was needed or not, after we got a stump ground. So, I scheduled for Stan himself to come out and check what excavation would be needed, check the measurements again, and confirm or change the quote so that it was accurate. I also wanted info on gravel or other lower cost options in case the excavation went over our budget. He scheduled to come the day before the work was to be done. Then, at the very last minute, he canceled that second visit. He said that instead of coming to talk to me, he would adjust the quote so that the difference in measurements was compensated by them doing whatever excavation was needed, not charging extra for it. OK, sounds reasonable, and the math was close to right. He came this morning to check in with me, and take a look before his guys would come this afternoon. We looked around and thought we were good to go. Before he left I just wanted to confirm that any necessary permits were included. First he said he thought his brother had gotten the permits, then he said that he didn't think permits were needed. Since I had called the town I said I thought maybe they were, and that Lydia (his wife who does scheduling) said all permits would be included, then he balked and said he would need to go to city hall. He called me back and said that we would indeed need to get permits and maybe ask for a variance, which entails a planning board meeting, etc, and that they would NOT do that, WE had to do that. So, we could either go ahead, excavate and do a gravel driveway today, and cover it with asphalt next year, for an extra $400. Or, we could wait till the process of permitting was done and do the whole thing in spring. We decided to do the gravel now, and I asked how to deal with it in winter. I was concerned about shoveling snow, getting mud and potholes, etc. So, he said he would come and show me a recycled asphalt product as another, slightly more expensive option than gravel, and see if we wanted to use that. He told me that whether gravel or recycled asphalt, it did not need a permit, and that it would be 6 to 8 inches deep, and was the basis of an asphalt paving anyway, so that could easily get done later. He himself never came back, but he sent his other guys to do the job, about an hour later. I walked the site with the foreman, confirming the measurements, and then asked to confirm how deep they would put the gravel. The foreman said three inches. I said, wait - Stan said 6-8. The foreman said that Stan had told him 3 inches. He called Stan and I spoke to him. When I asked about the discrepancy in depth, he simply said "We won't do the job, just tell them to roll out, we're done." The foreman then later denied that he had said that Stan had told him to do 3 inches. Now, I know I do ask a lot of questions. I want to be well informed, and know that a job that we are spending money for is well done, and know that I understand the process. But I really am not unpleasant or rude. Hanging up on me WAS rude and unprofessional. I was really HOPING to work with this company, as they had many good reviews here, and they are a local, family owned company. However, the number of discrepancies and inconsistencies, from the brother's quote and measurements, to whether or not the permit process and cost was included or even required, from gravel 8 inches deep to only 3 inches deep, from telling me that Stan does every job himself to him not even planning to be present at all, from 50x12' to 40x10', to just hanging up on me when I truly wanted to understand those discrepancies, it's just all unprofessional, and extremely disappointing. I'm not sure if it's shady-ness or just lack of communication between themselves, but it certainly was unprofessional and unfortunately, our experience was ultimately very disturbing, and a waste of several weeks.
Description of Work: Was going to add to our existing driveway by paving next to it. Then, was going to do gravel, or recycled asphalt. Ended up doing nothing.

It was a pleasure dealing with this company. After contacting them, Stan showed up the next day to provide a quote which ended up being the most competitive of all I received. They were able to schedule the work within my desired time frame and showed up on time that day with a full team. They removed the old driveway, laid a course of crushed stone, applied two coats of asphalt and left a very professional looking job. And the amazing part is that they were done and out of here within about 5 hours!

After receiving multiple quotes Stan Miller's price was competitive not the lowest but we liked him better and they are based in a nearby town. I have expectations that most contractors don't meet even though my standards are low. They only took 7 hours to replace a large driveway and worked hard all day. Stan was not there in the late morning when he goes out to quote new jobs but otherwise was there in the morning and afternoon to finish the rolling and final inspection. They have clean shiny trucks and that shows they take care of their equipment. Paving is all about ensuring that water has a place to flow and they did a drainage test. After I asked the foreman to raise up a low corner even more and he resisted but eventually Stan said no problem. They are not necessarily the cleanest but clean enough. two things that Stan did that are very commendable. The crew did not mark the sprinklers and ended up cutting into a head and a hidden line. I was concerned how I would fix it but Stan said no problem, he had a friend in the sprinkler/landscaping business and he had the head replaced and the line fixed within a couple of hours. Also the driveway looks great. Overall I would highly recommend Miller's Paving.

Excellent service provided. They were very kind to come to home twice to give estimates beforehand when I changed my mind on the scope of the project. As far as the actual paving went; They showed up at exactly the time they specified and were careful to check that they understood exactly what I needed done. Could tell they care about getting the little details correct. Have a friend who does paving work for local cities and when he looked at the finished driveway he couldn't believe how thick the asphalt came out.

Work was done professional and I driveway looks great after 3 weeks or so,,,
Description of Work: Mr. Miller came by on scheduled time to give me the estimate. |Compare to other quotes (some even going back 2 years) his quote was lowest. |He told me it will be 3-4 weeks before work can be scheduled. |I called the office and lady informed me that they can come middle of following week where they have another project in the town. |They showed up 10:30 (had told me it would be noon or afternoon) and started the work. |They had all the necessary equipment (trucks, bobcat, backhoe, rollers etc.) They even brought in the machine that lays down the asphalt like on highways.. |They dug up entire drive way and hauled it off in a truck. |They put down new stone base and rolled it down. |Then they put down the asphalt and used the roller multiple times. |I have 60x21 feet drive way. |I had asked them to correct one side (not perpendicular) which they did. |I asked them to fix the front door steps (as they did walk-way as well) by pushing it back to house and adding support. |All of this done professionally and quality looks good now, time will tell. |Everything was cleaned up and they even put CAUTION tape as driveway had to be blocked off for 3 days. |I am happy with the timing, quote and workmanship. |If the work stays as good for next 5+ years I will be happy.
