We met the contractor in the spring for him to survey the job and provide an estimate. He was highly recommended by others in our neighborhood. He provided an estimate but was unable to predict precisely when he would be able to do the job; he indicated a wait of about 4 months. We decided to wait for him because he had been highly recommended. Over the next few months, our area received a lot of rain, which delayed the project further but it was not especially urgent for us, so we waited. Eventually, the contractor started the job in late August. His crew was dilgent and professional. They were well equipped with the appropriate machinery and equipment and completed the job to a very high standard in slightly over 2 weeks. We are delighted with the results, which have transformed the appearance of our house. Overall, the job represents extremely good value.
Description of Work: Replacement of very decrepit and weed infested brick paths around house, cosmetic finishing of entry way steps, construction of convenience road around back of garage.

Dan of Littleton Earthworks just wrapped up Phase 2 of a huge landscaping project at my home. After 25 years of living here, everything was overgrown, worn out and basically in need of a major overhaul. I dreamed of a refreshing, energizing and clean outdoor palette of beauty that would capture each of our four seasons’ dimensions. Dream is now reality. This phase included tree removal & pruning, stone wall rebuild, patio and walkway installation, irrigation system, over 15,000 sq feet of sod grass, way too many new plantings for me to count, and landscape lighting. To say the final outcome is gorgeous and beyond my expectations is an understatement. Everything was beautifully designed and executed, and WITHIN BUDGET! What sets Dan apart is his attention to the tiniest of details. He doesn’t just create a beautiful outdoor living space, he attends to all the unseen details that ensure this new space will function properly and perfectly while we sit back and enjoy the gorgeous new views. His enthusiasm as he executes the plan is so refreshing. And, he takes ownership of all the people needed to get the job done; with my own demanding job, that was a huge win for me. Lastly, the extremely detailed cost estimate Dan provides for each project, and then the actual final invoice is something I have never been provided from any other service provider. Each line item is tracked to arrive at the final cost, showing exactly where the project was under- on- or over-estimate. There is one phase remaining in my major yard overhaul. I look forward to working with Dan in 2019 to complete the 360-renovation. Without exception or the slightest of reservation, I highly recommend Dan of Littleton Earthworks. Thank you, Littleton Earthworks!

The look of the finished result was even better than I had hoped. While not the lowest cost estimate we received, I believe you get what you pay for in this instance. It began with plenty of positive references on Angie's List, a prompt response from the owner Dan, and continued with a very detailed printed estimate, follow-through on the scheduled start date that worked with our specific timing considerations, daily updates, and an end product that improved on the previous design and the overall look of the space. Although I know nothing about landscaping, Dan gave me the impression that he was committed to doing the job right, for long term quality and function. I cannot recommend this company highly enough.

They came out March 2017. I would probably not use this provider again. They were very professional and seemed like they would do a high quality job. Actually, they were my top choice to hire, but the price was outrageously high.
Description of Work: I got an estimate from them but I did not have them do the work. The quote was for replacing our front steps and installing some bushes in our front yard.

My yard was nothing but scrub trees, roots, rocks, a badly placed stone wall and old tree stumps - a haven for woodchucks and almost too difficult to mow - coupled with poor drainage and a badly deteriorated front step. The work that Dan, his crew and subcontractors accomplished in just a couple weeks is unbelievable. While always professional, hard working, and "no nonsense" while on the job, they were also always very pleasant and easy to talk to. Dan was personally on site to direct and/or participate in every aspect of the project. They removed several dangerous trees and tree stumps, a truck load of boulders, excavated the woodchuck burrow, replaced the badly deteriorated front step with beautiful bluestone, and regraded and filled the front and side yard areas to resolved serious drainage issues to preserve the home before installing the new lawn and plantings. The end result is a true transformation. Dan is an artist when it comes to landscape design, from selection and placement of each plant set off by gorgeous stones, an outer farmer's wall to define the front line, beautiful new trees, and a flower garden that is a balm to my soul. He was sensitive to relocate and use existing plants that had special meaning to me. He is responsive to my questions, has guided me in proper lawn and garden care and returns to check on how the lawn and plants are doing. No one can control the weather, but Dan is there for the long term to make sure the end result is beautiful. His pricing is detailed, transparent and fair. He explains every item carefully both before the contract is signed and after the work is completed. The only slight negative is that because he is so good and in demand, one may have to wait awhile for work to begin - but the wait is worth it. I definitely plan on using him again.

Dan and his crew did an excellent job on the project. Three small to mid-sized contractors had previously failed due to the size and complexity of our project, so we quit messing around and went with Littleton Earthworks since their reviews seemed to indicate that they could handle any job. He has a sizable and experienced crew plus all of the required heavy machinery to get things done. Despite some curveballs presented by our site, the job was finished quickly (under two weeks). Dan's estimates are detailed and thorough and he's very clear with the costs of any add-ons. Dan even provided suggestions at no charge of what plants and shrubs to use (we installed those ourselves). Overall, I highly recommend Dan and Littleton Earthworks. I will use definitely use them again.

The installation began on a Monday morning at 8am (as promised). The front yard was completely overrun with invasive species. After clearing the front yard, they began setting five granite steps to go from the street level down to the, as yet built, walkway. When they needed to bring in materials and heavy equipment they protected the lawn with sheets of plywood. On day two they again arrived on time and completed the steps and began to lay the paver walk. When resetting a granite step that was at the porch end, they discovered that it was held in place as part of the porch support. This meant that they couldn't raise it (as planned) to meet current building codes (it needed to be 7"; it was 9"). The owner, Dan, came up with a rather elegant solution. He had a 2" slab cut just larger than the existing step. He cemented this to the existing step thus raising the step to the appropriate height! This caused the third day of installation (originally, he had said two). On the third day they completed the dress work and reseeded the lawn. I am very happy with the final outcome. It was worth the money spent! I would call them again in the future and have already provided their info to my neighbor and another friend in town. Excellent job!

Every phase of working on our landscape project with Littleton Earthworks was excellent. Dan always arrived on time and promptly replied to our questions. He took our rough ideas and translated them to a practical project while gently steering us away from thoughts that didn?t work. When it came time to do the project, his crew was hard working, friendly, and courteous. We are very pleased with the outcome and highly recommend Littleton Earthworks.

Prior to any work being started, Dan(owner of Earthworks) asked me to let the neighbors know and to get permission for their vehicles to access their driveway as it butts my land and Sections of my fence had to be removed. The trucks came in after the neighbors left and were gone prior to their return. It was a 3 man crew. All were very professional with me as well as with each other. There was no foul language or loud music. Through the course of their work, I heard Dan thank his men, which was very refreshing. We went over the invoice and every detail of what was done was discussed. If there was an overage it was noted. (Due to changes or requests which differed from the original and had been authorized by me) Also an underage (?) yes - as his machinery was already on the property, he did not charge for a full day for the added trench work. After filling in the trench he re-seeded. In the future, I will call them again. If anyone is planning to use their services, plan a season in advance, as they appear to be in much demand.
Description of Work: Complete renovation of side yard. Installed a French drain, leveled area grading as necessary, then added a covering of pea stone. A 9' round patio was built with pavers to match the existing walkway. Along the perimeter of this area, flowering shrubs were planted. (I had specified the shrubs some of which were not readily available). This was done after dismantling a stone fire pit (saving all the stones for me) and hauling out tons of earth/brush and debris. A railing is to be installed by a sub-contractor which is included in the above price. At the last minute, I added on an excavation for an electrical conduit for a lamppost. All of this was accomplished in 3 1/2 days as had been estimated.

I described the problem to Daniel - water entering garage from retaining wall adjacent to one side of garage. He suggested that rainfall from half the roof, which exited from two downspouts near the retaining wall, was adding to the water exiting through the wall by the garage. The solution was a deep drywell and a set of connectors to the downspouts which used septic system filters for leaf cleanout. This works perfectly. Job was done in one day and includes fill and grading. I'm very pleased with the results and plan to hire Littleton Earthworks again.

Basically it all went well. They rescheduled for a day later than they originally said, after another customer needed something done for a party. Dan did offer to take a small amount off the estimate for the inconvenience. They worked efficiently and make very short work of some large rocks and stumps. They were very careful of the potential electrical lines for the well pump. Since this area is fenced off to protect our dog from stray critters, Dan did a good job of finding and installing the correct materials for the job. The lot is not level, and a few fence sections dip at an angle, but I think there wasn't much that could be done short of regrading the entire yard. I feel very safe letting the pooch out back now, and the fence is very stable and looks fine.

I needed some repairs to my brick walkway which was both bulging and sinking d/t nearby root invasion. I also had a collapsed brick landing area (small patio) outldie a porch slider that had completely collapsed, I thought b/c of animals burrowing. I called several highly rated providers who did hardscaping and Dan Sturtz was the first to return my call, which I think was the very same day or close to it. He scheduled a visit very quickly and I was so impressed by his style and approach, I inquired about some landscaping (mostly moving existing plantings) that I needed done. He added those items to the list. It took a bit of time (2 weeks) to get the written estimate which was not a big problem except that I was going out of town for two weeks and wanted to be around when the work was done. It was scheduled the day before I was to leave but, as luck would have it, the weather did not cooperate and the work couldn't be done that day. Nevertheless, Dan came by (accomodating my shedule for that day) and we did a detailed walkthrough of what was to moved where and everything was marked. The work was done while I was away. and met with my complete satisfaction. Of note, Dan is scrupulous about protecting your property when working with heavy equipment. Part of his estimate covers the materials he uses to keep lawns and driveways free of damage or debris. This is very impressive and much appreciated.
Description of Work: Repair section of brick walkway. Rebuilt small brick landing that had completely eroded d/t water erosion. Replace downspout to minimize firther water damage. Moved 9 med/large plants from front yard into new areas to alleviate crowding.

In a word, Excellent! If you are considering installation of pavers, walls, hard-scaping and landscaping then you should give Littleton Earthworks a call. Dan and his crew were professional, thoughtful, and courteous from start to finish. Our project took about 2 weeks to complete. I believe Dan came to our house at least 3 or 4 times to discuss the design Dan is easy to work with, listens well and is responsive. We traded many emails and calls throughout the project cycle. We solved quite a few problems along the way and is a major transformation. Nothing but compliments so far! :-) We are very pleased with the outcome and we plan to have more work done next spring. Best of all, the estimates and the actual/s were very close. In some cases the final figures were under and as with any project we had cost over from additions and changes. Very fair price, very detailed and focused on high quality with accurate pricing.

They were excellent. They did good work. They are friendly and giving advice. He is telling me when to stick my fruit trees and just giving me free advice, which he didn't have to do, but he was doing that. I would definitely recommend him. I would use him probably every two to three years.

They trimmed my lilac and they trimmed pretty much all my perennials and then they brought in tree trimming service and they trimmed all of my trees. From the start of the process to the completed product, everything went really smoothly. Dan Sturtz, the owner of the company, got back to me within a few days of my contacting him. He called on a Saturday and wanted to come the next Wednesday morning. This was really inconvenient for me because I was really busy at work and needed to be at work in the morning. Instead, he was nice enough to come by my house on the Saturday he called me. I was really grateful for that. I found Dan to be very professional and completely knowledgeable about the work that needed to be done. I was impressed by how he walked and talked through the whole process of what it would take to complete the job so we had a really good idea of what was going to be done. He said I would get the quote in about a week. I got the quote within a week. I was really impressed with how detailed the quote was. Every detail was included. There were no open-ended questions. Once we decided to go with Littleton Earthworks, we contacted Dan and within a couple of weeks we got a call telling us that he wanted to start working the following week. A few days before work started, he stopped by with the contract and went over the details with us. The work started on a Tuesday afternoon and was completed by Friday. The crew did an outstanding job and were very professional. Everything, including the lawn, was left in tip top condition. The stairs and walkway are absolutely beautiful. I would definitely use Littleton Earthworks again. I highly recommend them.

We were very pleased by our overall experience with Littleton Earthworks. We contacted Dan about removing the overgrowth and installing a functional garden. Dan took time to understand our goal, and then described what he thought would need to be done in great detail. We have been enjoying the result all summer, and look forward to many more happy years with our garden. Other reviewers have mentioned many of the same positive experiences that we had. Instead of repeating them, I'll add in a few "intangibles" that impressed us. 1. As I mentioned, Dan described the project in great detail, and drew us up a carefully itemized estimate. This helped us know what we were getting into, what parts of the project we had to understand, what the tradeoffs were, and what questions we had to ask. 2. When I asked Dan if he carried insurance and workmens' compensation for his workers, he responded promptly and even said that he appreciated being asked this question. 3. The crew took good care of their tools and machinery and were obviously very skilled at operating their equipment even in tricky conditions. 4. I was impressed to see how much detail went into setting the walls, and how carefully the mason laid the base of the wall. 5. We found everyone on the crew to be friendly and responsive. 6. The estimate included a few "touch up" jobs around the work area, some of which we had asked for, and other ideas that Dan suggested to improve our yard. These were a small part of the overall project, but made a big difference and were very convenient to have finished all at one time.
Description of Work: 1. Removed a large mass of overgrown junipers on a slope behind our house 2. Built two long walls to create two garden beds on the slope 3. Filled the beds with loam and fertilizer 4. Replaced sections of lawn torn up during the work with new loam and seed 5. Fixed up a lot of smaller problems in the yard, such as removing yew bush stumps
