Very happy with Dan and his crew. Very aware and attuned to our needs through the process - asking what we wanted in our yard, what our family needs and desires were, how we saw those needs changing in the future. During the process, the Littleton Earthworks crew was always respectful of us and the property - leaving it clean in the evening, covering things up (equipment, etc) when they left, and keeping us up to date as to when things would be done. Very happy with the price paid (not the cheapest), will be hiring them again as we develop more areas in the yard.
Description of Work: Littleton Earthworks provided a broad range of service: 1. Design - providing a vision to the future once all work is complete 2. Significant fill and loam brought in (900+ cubic yards) to level back yard 3. Installed a large paver brick patio and walkway including granit steps 4. Installed 100+ feet of steel fencing 5. Installed 12,000 sq ft +/- of new lawn 6. Removed 7 x 100ft + white pines 7. Reset existing sprinkler system to match new lawn contours 8. Modified deck with new steps and access to back yard to match new design

Dan and his crew were professional, extremely skilled and performed the work exactly as promised. Dan was very good at keeping us notified of when they would show up when weather and other jobs made scheduling tricky. They carted in 3 trucks full of fill and dirt, driving across a large area of lawn without damaging the lawn or the sprinkler heads. Dan spent a lot of time walking around our yard with us, showing us what trees and shrubs needed some care, and showing us how to properly prune a shrub. We are very pleased with their work and plan to work with them again in the spring on landscape design of another area of our yard.
Description of Work: 1) Filled a sink hole (roughly 10' in diameter and 3' deep) with fill and loam and planted a shrub there, then covered the area with bark mulch. 2) Removed logs from a tree which had been taken down last year. 3) Removed 3 trees which had suffered storm damage and pulled the stumps on 2 of the 3. 4) Pruned a large tree which had many dead limbs. 5) Pruned 2 shrubs which had suffered storm damage.

This was our second time hiring Littleton Earthworks. They put in a new patio for us last fall, and we were so happy with that experience that we did not hesitate to hire them again for some major backyard work this spring. There was *alot* of work to be done, and we needed to have it completed in time for my son's 3rd birthday party. Not only did Dan and his crew gladly take on the challenge, but as the project went along my wife and I kept adding more things to the list, and Dan was happy to accommodate all of our additional requests. In spite of all the additional work, the job was still done in time for us to entertain 40+ people in our backyard for our son's birthday party. And we received a lot of complements from our guests about the work that was done. I should also note that while they were installing the privacy fence, one of our neighbors came over and started complaining to Dan about the fence location and asking if we had a permit. She was not very pleasant, but Dan handled the situation very professionally, calmly explaining to her that they were following a plot plan obtained from the town, and that there was no requirement for a permit for this fence. Later that evening I went over to the neighbor's house to discuss her concerns, and she said she misunderstood and was "over it". She also commented on how professional Dan was when she talked to him. That says a lot. We were once again extremely pleased with Littleton Earthworks. My wife is very picky about the quality of the work that contractors do, and she's had many complaints about other contractors we've hired in the past, but for the second straight time, but that was not the case with Littleton Earthworks. This is the first time we've hired someone and had everything go smoothly from start to finish... TWICE!! We still have more work to do in our yard, and once we have it in our budget to do that work, Littleton Earthworks will be getting the call.
Description of Work: * removed arborvitaes on side of yard and replaced with privacy fencing * installed Ameristar fencing on opposite side of yard * moved shed * installed cobblestone edging and did plantings around outside of pool fence * plantings around the pool

We contacted Littleton Earthworks to replace an old walkway with new paver bricks. He came to do an estimate for us, and was prompt with his reply. He called us to schedule the start date and worked diligently to complete the walkway in one day. We are very satisfied with his responsiveness and work. Don’t hesitate to hire Dan Sturtz, he’s a professional contractor. We’re so glad we met him and have already lined up another hardscaping and landscaping project for him and his crew in our yard.
Description of Work: We just started overhauling our entire inground pool area. We completed a 70-foot retaining wall in the fall with Triad Associates, and hired Littleton Earthworks to overhaul our paver walkway that leads to the stairs, and then to the pool. We plan to start the pool and patio in 2 weeks. Dan, and his crew, first protected our lawn by placing plywood planks on the entire area where his equipment would be moving on so that we didn't have any damage to our lawn. This was very nice as Triad damaged our lawn significantly when doing the wall (though Triad did do a great job on the wall). Dan then replaced old concrete blocks with beautiful pavers, considering drainage, and the entire pool project. He even went the extra mile and removed a couple of old plants for us, since his excavator was already on site. I was impressed with Dan’s prompt replies and thorough printed estimates. He pays close attention to detail and does an excellent job at communicating with his clients. His employees work hard and diligently. We have already hired them for a second job.

I contacted Dan because our two Golden Retriever puppies were tearing off branches from the huge shrubs (which I found out were toxic for dogs) in our backyard and digging out rocks from the eroding hillside. He responded and came out to give us an estimate very promptly. Our budget was pretty tight, and I very much appreciated his advice as to how best to manage the area so it would both be safe for the puppies and look nice. His crew came out two weeks later and did the whole job in one day. A few days later I asked for an adjustment to one area, and Dan came out himself to do the work the next day. He and his crew were so easy to work with and very patient with my questions and requests. And I was really pleased not only with the final result but also with the cost, which I thought was very reasonable and fair. I will definitely be calling them again for future work.
Description of Work: Ripped out overgrown azaleas and rhododendrons in the backyard, installed lawn, mulched, moved a large stone bench, added loam to eroding hillside, and transplanted creeping myrtle to cover the hill.

Dan Sturtz is extremely responsive and professional. He put together an extensive bid proposal that was very detailed. He stayed in communication about the start date. He and his crew were punctual and worked very hard, and he was on site every day. They were meticulous and truly cared about customer satisfaction and the quality of their work. They were as excited as I was to see the property transformation. The excavation, hardscape and installation of beds all went well. The driveway is really attractive; the walk and stone wall are beautiful. The carpentry work was fast, efficient and wonderful. Dan personally selected the three trees at the nursery to my specifications. July was a hot month and the new seed was put down by hand (as opposed to hydro-seeding as specified in the proposal.) In spite of his best efforts to set up my above ground sprinklers with timers, it did not grow and needed to be reseeded in September. As the winter approached it looked much better but may need some additional seeding in the spring. I have put shrubs and flowers in some of the new beds and love how everything looks. I would have given him As across the board. I just wish he had informed me in his bid proposal that he does not hydro-seed.
Description of Work: I asked Littleton Earthworks to transform an unattractive bare yard and a confusing driveway layout into a beautiful template that I could plant on my own. I am an avid gardener and had no garden beds or trees. They excavated the paved areas and put down a stone driveway, a small stone retaining wall and a lovely bluestone walk. They created garden beds in the front and back yards for me to plant and planted three moderate sized speciman trees. They seeded new lawn areas, put in a dry well and drain from the back entrance, overseeded areas of the back lawn designated for grass and wildflowers. The L.E. crew also cleaned up many eyesores such as foundation scars, concrete back steps, etc. Dan's brother's business, Start to Finish Contractors, built newly configured front steps and enclosed a high deck with lattice work, including lattice doors.

We couldn't be happier with Littleton Earthworks. From our first meeting with Dan, when he came to our house to discuss the job, it was clear that he runs a very professional organization. We were also impressed with his organizational skills and his ability to communicate clearly the details of the job. His crew is very professional, hard working, and courteous. This job was a challenging one for a number of reasons, but they met each challenge head-on and we are very happy with the end result. As is typical with larger jobs like this one, there were a few issues which came up along the way (for example, while excavating behind our garage, they discovered a rotted sill plate on the back wall of the garage). Dan clearly communicated these issues as they came up, explained the implications as far as cost, time, etc., and allowed us to make the decisions as far as how to proceed. The additional work that was involved as a result of these issues was completed in a timely manner so as to minimize the overall impact on the schedule. We are very happy with the result of the hard work that Dan and his crew performed. We are already enjoying the new patio, and are very hopeful that the drainage work will eliminate some of the moisture issues we were having in our sun room. We won't hesitate to contact them for future landscaping jobs.
Description of Work: Installed exterior drainage system around perimeter of sun room and behind garage (including French drains, dry well, and gutter) Installed patio behind sun room, and additional pavers in the pool area.

Response from Littleton Earthworks LLC
We looked through the company phone message book back to April to see if this message was received. We do not see this call having come in, and if we had, we would have called back to let Member know that Littleton Earthworks is a Landscape Construction Company and not a Landscape Maintenance company, and would have been happy to refer her to a maintenance company in the area, as we do with all such calls. We do not do lawn mowing or lawn maintenance of any sort. If an email was sent through our website, it was never forwarded to the corporate email, and I am certainly going to look into that immediately and apologize for any inconvenience that may have caused. I assure you that we do our best to respond to every contact made to us, even if it is not a job that is appropriate for our company. We are a small local company, and feel strongly about supporting our fellow local businesses by referring clients to them when appropriate, rather than ignore or turn them away.

Wanted to work with Dan from Littleton Earthworks for a landscaping and yardwork project. Dan returned the phone call and was courteous on the phone and in person when he came over to take a look at what was to be done. Based on some time spent and quick chat about what I was looking to get done and the budget for the assignment we shook hands with the agreement that I would get an estimate with some ideas on what could be done within a week's time. Didnt hear back. Called again just to check in and see if he had thought about it but didnt get a response back. Looked them up in Angie's list and found great reviews. Seemed like a very nice individual in person but disappointed at not getting a response even if it was something along the lines of not doable.

Excellent response from an Angie's list Landscaping provider. I noted that this vendor was only 2 miles from my residence and highly regarded. I left him an email on Sunday and he responded within hours, saying he would be by Monday to take a look. He did so and after inspection returned with his mini back-hoe and deftly removed the boulder, and placed it where I asked. An easy project for him, to be sure, but he was friendly, knew what to do and how to do it, and accomplished the task fully professionally, and amazingly quickly, literally fewer than 24 hours after my initial inquiry. Based on his timeliness and friendly attitude, I've subsequently asked him to quote on some additional projects. Highest recommendation!

It was a straight-forward job, but I immediately felt comfortable with Littleton Earthworks. Dan quoted and managed the job. He made some good suggestions when he came to look at the sight that improved upon what I was thinking. All the quotes were very similar, so it really came down to the people doing the job. He was easy to communicate with through email as I waited in the queue for the job to start. Once the job started we were amazed at how quickly they got it done, how professionally they worked (including cleaning up thoroughly each day), and how well the job turned out. One year later, we still love the work.

It went smoothly from start to finish. Dan and his team were very professional, cleaned up after themselves daily, and Dan provided regular updates as the job progressed. His price was very competitive. The crew ran into a problem where they needed to dig down much further than they planned due to very rocky soil, and they had to bring in an extra 15 tons of sand, but there's no chance of frost heaving the sidewalk as a result of the work they did. We're very happy with their work and would hire them again, and we highly recommend them.

Littleton Earthworks came promptly to see the area and discuss our ideas and provide their own input. I found dealing with them to be quite easy, and I was completely comfortable with the prospect of hiring them. Although lower estimates were obtained from other landscaping companies, we decided to accept their bid because we felt that their professional, friendly manner, and their experience and knowledge would help see this project proceed in a straightforward manner. After accepting the bid, we were provided with a detailed contract that clearly listed the work, the supply and labor costs, and the timetable. We provided a deposit, and the work was started within 10 days. The projects proceeded as scheduled, and the communications were easy and helpful. We had been concerned that the work would tear up the lawn, but we were pleased that our concerns were well addressed. The digging provided some issues with the existing underground irrigation system, but these were also well handled. Ultimately, the total bill exceeded the estimate by approximately 10%, but we found this to be acceptable based on the inclusion of some additional services.
Description of Work: Littleton Earthworks was contacted to provide and spread mulch over a significant area around the house. They were also asked to provide an estimate to excavate a 30' x 40' area in the backyard and build a play area that would eventually contain a big playset provided by Cedarworks.
