They were prompt, timely, and fixed the problem that developed. They showed up on time, the cleanup was great, and their price was lower. However, we got one problem with something that was broken when they arrived and they said they would repair it and they forgot. So we ended up having to take it to the company to have it repaired.

I have had some crummy luck with contractors lately, but this time I truly lucked out. These people love their craft, respect their craft, and take pride in their craft, which shows in all their work. When Bob came out to my house to see what we need to do for MassSave insulation project, he quickly discovered my attic was unholy dump of multiple generation of insulation piled on top of each other (try 50 years worth of insulation) mixed in with carcasses of dead squirrels, trash from roofers, vermin excrement etc. He was adamant that needed to be removed before any sealing and insulation work is done. At first I wasn't sure about that, but boy am I glad I listened to him and had it cleaned out. Crew of several guys labored for a whole day taking that garbage out. They may have been singing there in the attic, but I know that was masking the curses they may have had going through their heads as they were taking out likely 100+ bags of garbage. When the clean-up was done, I discovered rat nest of wiring with some of it chewed up. So Bob basically save my house from catching fire. And that was just the start of the job. Couple months later (took a while to get MassSave to clear me on HVAC problems I had) crew came in to do insulation on my knee walls (which are finally usable now), re-do the attic, and do sealing around the house. Not sure how the heck they were able to do that, but I also asked them to redo my crawlspace, which they manage to squeeze into the two days they were at my house. Unbelievable! Amanda and Tiffany (two sisters who run the company) are as exceptional. Amanda was flying through the paperwork, getting all the details ironed out, dealing with bureaucrats. Tiffany came to make sure everything was running smooth at my house, which actually wasn't truly necessary, because the crew is very autonomous, they make the decisions what to do to hit the deadlines and finish the job properly. There is not cranky foreman watching them and it shows. Result: my boiler is running 50% less and house feels so much warmer. I can turn off the system in the middle of the day and 2nd floor only drops two degrees in the whole day. That used to happen in 1-2 hours. I have several other insulation projects planned and Dolphin crew will be ones doing them for sure.

I was very pleased with Dolphin's crew and the work that they did. They arrived on the day and time that was scheduled and completed all of the work in the planned estimate of 2 days. The crew was pleasant and personable and very conscientious about covering floors and furniture in the path to the working area as well as the working area itself. They did a great job of adequately covering all of these areas to prevent damage and to keep things clean. All tools and materials were collected and put away after the job was complete. I inspected the working area and found no problems. Although an official Mass Save inspection is pending, my informal inspection of the work performed by Dolphin's crew appears to be complete, satisfactory, and in accordance with the recommendations of Mass Save.
Description of Work: 1) Performed a combustion safety diagnostic test before the work was started and again when finished 2) Removed attic insulation 3) Sealed draft openings in attic and basement 4) Covered recessed lighting fixtures in attic with fire proof insulated covers 5) Installed insulation batting around fixtures and in selected areas of the attic and basement 6) Blew-in cellulose insulation to a depth of about 13" throughout the attic

My 10 year old house couldn't hold the heat and always felt cold. It was insulated with R30 fiberglass insulation. I have cathedral ceilings in most of the areas and the rafters were 2x12s. I wanted to stop the "stack effect", because the fiberglass insulation seemed to be ineffective. Dolphin removed all the fiberglass with only a few holes in the plaster. The holes were needed because framing prevented them from getting access to the insulation. Most of the access was through knee walls, closets, and by taking off the fascia board on the outside of the house. After removal they air sealed everywhere, then put up "InsulWeb" and strapping to hold reenforce the insulweb and the strapping will also allow for future wallboard or plywood. They then filled the spaces with cellulose insulation. Then they went back and dense packed every space giving an R48 in most spaces and an R60 at the top where the space allowed it. They patched up the plaster for these holes and the opening that used to contain a whole house fan (that will not longer be needed). They did a blower door measurement before the work and it was just under 3000 cfm. After the work, it was just over 1000 cfm. I got a 63% reduction, and that will translate into a warmer house that uses dramatically less fuel. I calculate that I will pay of the cost of the work in about 7 years while being warmer and burning less propane which is better for the environment. It was just done, so I don't have hard numbers on the savings yet. While the blower door numbers show that it will save money, I experienced the difference this weekend. The temperature got down to the 40;s at night and 60;s during the day, but the temperature in the house did not fluctuate one bit, staying at 64 degrees all weekend. We have not turned on the heat yet, and don't think we'll have to for a while. I have had an EcoBee Wifi Thermostat since February that records the temperature inside and out, as will as the duration the furnace runs. Dolphin can provide that thermostat. I will have real data soon, but the initial indications are very promising. As an engineer, I needed to do a lot of research to decide to do this, but both Dave Pos the Energy engineer and the installation staff all had much deeper knowledge than I could dig up. Not only do they know what they are doing, but they are nice people to have around as well. Energy costs are not go down, so I'm also protecting myself from future energy price spikes. I feel this home improvement that has the highest ROI of any that I can do because it is done once and saves money forever. I don't know why everyone doesn't do this.
Description of Work: Removed all my fiberglass insulation in my roof slops and knee walls and replaced it with dense packed Cellulose Insulation and did air sealing all around.

I have had a horrible experience with Dolphin. My husband and I have tried to get an estimate by them since 8/21/14. There were many times they did not return our messages for days or weeks which they chalked up to miscommunication. My husband and I are forgiving and believed the reviews that we saw on Angie?s List and wanted to use Dolphin. We finally got an appointment for an estimate after over a month of back and forth. I made special accommodations to be at home for the appointment time. They did not show and did not call. I am done with giving them chances. I can not speak to how well they perform their services, but their customer service is awful. Also, they have serious communication problems both within the company and with their customers.

[member name removed], We have had a dozen communications with you between phone calls with your husband and messages on Angie's List. We have an office staff solely for that purpose and you have talked to Amanda, Kristen, and David to name a few. Every time you have contacted us we have responded that day. Unfortunately there seems to be a cross communication between you and your husband. If you call our office at any time during the hours of 9-5pm you will be answered and taken care of. We have very strong customer service and communication skills and we take pride in the fact that even though we deal with so many homeowners daily most of them have very good things to say about the way we treat them and stay in touch with them. You wrote a negative review last week saying a similar thing and when you realized your husband had in fact already spoke with our engineer and made plans to meet you sent me a message apologizing and the review was taken down. I am sorry you are still unhappy.

Dolphin arrived on time and took care to cover all work areas with cloth and or plastic to catch debris. They performed the job in a timely manner and were able find a solution to an unexpected problem that arose. To make a long story short, Mass Save had recommended a vent be installed in an area that was not accessible. Dolphin was able to call Mass Save to change the work order to have the vent installed in a different, but approved, area. Despite all this, they finished on time and left the work areas cleaner than when they arrived.

I really wish these folks also did plumbing, HVAC, electric, etc. etc. Absolute vast majority of contractors I have dealt with in Northeast are atrocious, even if they have A rating. I am so happy I went with Dolphin. They will be doing all my re-insulation too. Three guys showed up in a clean truck. Smile on their faces, great attitude. For someone to come do a dirty job on a Saturday, that is a really great attitude. Quick survey of the attic and they suited up and went straight to work. Very courtous bunch too. They actually asked if it is OK they turned on music up there. Nobody ever asks that! My attic is low, it isn't even properly vented. Insulation was really dirty and old. Not a single complaint, not even a mention of it. When they were cleaning up, I even got a karaoke show up there. Not sure guys knew I could hear it, but besides doing really splendid job, they sing well too :-) I call them now the "Insulation Singers". BTW, Bob, one of the owners, equally cheerful dude. Did I mention they showed up exactly on the dot? How many contractors in our neck of the woods do that.

We were connected with Dolphin through MassSave and they paid, sorry I can't comment about their pricing. But their work and the crew was fantastic! They were great about scheduling and adjusted it to fit our schedule! I never felt like I was bothering them when i would call them up. When the 3 guys showed up they were on time, professional, and extremely knowledgeable. It was a refreshing change to have them greet me and explain the process to me in clear english before starting. The whole crew worked efficiently and was very polite. They left the house spotless putting down mats while working and then vacuuming up any dirt - even going as far as to make sure they go under our entrance way table! Great work and highly recommended!

Installers were professional, worked hard, and left the work area clean. I got the sense that they really packed the ceiling because they were at it for a few hours. Before committing to the project, Dave came to the house and after inspecting the attic and the roof, we had a very fruitful discussion about the pros and cons of the different possible insulation options. My house is a 4000 square foot twenty-year old colonial with questionable insulation. Like many houses, my attic gets very cold in the winter and very hot in the summer, and with second floor ductwork in this space, I was hoping to not only stop general home heat loss, but also operate the furnace and the air conditioner more efficiently. We discussed the common practice of air-sealing the floor of the attic, but we ultimately went with the hot roof option to bring the attic into the "envelope" and make it a conditioned space. He explained that the soffit and ridge vents would be sealed since such a conditioned space would need neither the heat nor the moisture dissipating properties of such vents. He explained that a a fire and mold resistant cellulose fiber would be dense-packed to a depth greater than the width of the roofing joists to offset the poor insulating properties of wooden structural members. In addition to insulating the underside of the roof, the ends of the main section of the house (gables) would also be insulated. Dave also mentioned that a few recessed lights in three bedrooms would need to be replaced with LED units to allow for more effective placement of the cellulose. Although the primary goal was not sealing the house, blower door tests would be performed before and after the work to measure any improvements. The crew of 4-5 people spent about six days prepping the attic space and packing the insulation. I felt very comfortable with the crew moving in and out of the house, and they were quite conscious about cleaning up. Since most traffic occurred via a ladder to the attic, they did not need to be regularly moving through the two floors of living space. The crew seemed to work diligently, and were friendly and willing to entertain my numerous questions. I am very satisfied with the project and will continue to monitor and evaluate and compare past and future energy usage trends. In addition to energy cost savings benefits, I feel that the threat of ice dams and the ensuing damage has been dramatically reduced.
Description of Work: My attic was insulated by blowing and compacting a thick layer of shredded cellulose under my roof to achieve an R-value of approximately 40.

I am in the Mass save program and one of the recommendations was to have the house insulated. I had a list of providers given to me by the Mass save auditor. The first company I called was close by and I figured I would give them a try. I called, told them what had to be done and they came out to give me an estimate. I met the man at my house and after telling him of the trouble spots in this possible project he walked thru to assess the project. After a short time of looking at the area needing the work and also a short time on his cell phone he gave me the run around of why they couldn't do it. I was extremely upset that this company had wasted my time. I called my Mass Save auditor and he said to go to another company because that the company just didn't want the job. I did and called Dolphin. From the moment the salesman came in to my home he was very positive and straight forward on what they will do. I felt great after the previous experience with the other insulation company. They showed up on the day of the project on time and with a plan on how to get the job done. I was very impressed that one of the owners was the leader of the project. She was extremely professional and showed passion for her company that I find admirable. She explained that her foreman had an accident and the crews were being spread thin with the loss of this foreman for a short time. She was there to supervise and pitched in to make sure I was happy with the project and service. I am very satisfied and have a great respect for her. I would recommend this company and let those that hire Dolphin see the hard work from the top to the bottom of the company. Those that do hire Dolphin will all be as impressed as I am. Great job Tiffany and crew! Thank for your hard work. Bill y

They were very knowledgeable and very professional. They came over that day to determine if we needed this. Prior to doing the work the came out, took a look around and noticed that some of the information that they had provided wasn't 100% accurate but they were still going to stick by the estimate. They went over the information before they came out, about how to prepare and that was helpful. The project manager was great. As they were going through and providing the insulation, which took about 4 days, they found some rot in the side of the sun room. He had started to insulate that area and as he was going up he noticed that there was a problem he stopped work in that particular area and let me know immediately. He took a lot of pictures of the area and he also took pictures of the area where he thought the whole thing had started. He took a lot of time on it which I really appreciated. They worked through the snow and some pretty cold weather. They were really nice and well mannered. They were in and out of the house a lot. There were a couple of instances where the insulation had actually blown into the house and when that happened they tried to clean up as thoroughly as possible. It wasn't immaculate but then again the house wasn't immaculate. They were very professional about it and he felt bad that it had happened. It wasn't really their fault or their fault, it is just where it is weakest and it is going to come through. That's a known factor that can happen. The staff was there the whole time and making sure everything was going smoothly and very, very easy to deal with. I am so surprised about how much less noise there was and how much warmer it was right after they finished. I am a 100% satisfied.

I selected Dolphin from a list of MassSave approved contractors in my area. Through this program I received more than $3,000 worth of insulation and vapor barrier sealing in my basement. Chris the owner of Dolphin, came to meet with me twice before any work or even a down payment was made. Chris took lots of time to explain how to approach my project. How insulation works, what the priorities are and where to best spend my small budget to get the biggest bang for my buck. I thought for sure that windows were going to be the best first step in making my circa 1904 home more energy efficient and warm. But no, and Chris explained everything and I am glad to say that I plan on using Dolphin again in 2013 to add to what we have already accomplished. With Chris's help I will most likely being doing work in 2014 as well. Until I am most comfortable in my home and my energy cost are at there lowest. Thanks Chris. DO: cover everything that you do not want to have to wash or dust. All though the team said this wasn't neccessary and they did cover some things, just do yourself a favor and be super prepared. I even took down all the curtains on the second floor. no matter how good the system is, blown in insulation is blown in insulation. It just gets everywhere, nature of the job at hand. The total project took 3 days to complete. Chris arrived day 1, with his team of 4 workers. We walked the full scope of the work to be done and Chris explained what would be done first, second, and so on. I did need to approve them cutting an access hole in one room where there was no access to the eave, but they covered it and put a layer of plaster over the cuts. ( Still need to sand, and see if i need to re-plaster. Small cost for the added value of the eave being insulated properly. Just be prepared) I also approved of multiple 3inch holes cut in another room in order to get the blown in insulation in between the rafters. OLD HOUSES :) ( Again, needed to be done. Still need to sand ....same as above) Clean up was fine, the team got all the big chunks and most of the dust, but with any indoor project like this, be prepared to clean up. Overall I am thrilled with the positive effect this work has had on my comfort level in my home. No more drafts, no more turning up the heat to try and keep the temperature regulated upstairs, no more having to wear a snow suit to bed. No more smell of dirt and mildew in my basement, the dampness has been curbed significantly. I am very much looking forward to the additional work planned for 2013. The Dolphin team was very professional, knew what they were talking about, and got there work done.
Description of Work: 1. The second floor of my cape style circa 1904 home was insulated throughout the eaves (4 of them), the attic area and the exterior dormer walls. Essentially imagine a blanket being slid over the top of my house. 2. Secondly, my peastone coved basement floor was covered with an 8Mil sheet of plastic to create a vapor barrier 3. The sil of the house was sealed with professional grade "great stuff" 4. The 3 exterior doors on the first floor where fitted with hard weather striping that was scrwewed to the casing and sweeps were installed at the bottom. 5. My living room bump out window was insulted underneith where it hung over the houses footprint.

Overall it went well, though we had to iterate with the sheetrock company, as in some areas, the insulation was installed too tightly and there was no way to get the sheetrock on. To be fair to Dolphin, the sheetrock company struggled with handling the cellulose insulation, as it's tighter then fiberglass. There were also a few communication gaps between Chris and the crews. However, the issues were minor, and Dolphin was very good at working through them, both with me and the sheetrock company. They were fully committed to making sure everything was right and I was happy with the work. And I am. The cellulose insulation was a good choice, it's well installed, and I'm happy to recommend Dolphin.
Description of Work: Dolphin installed cellulose insulation in our garage ceiling and walls, replacing the previous fiberglass bat insulation. The wallboard had been removed during a remodeling project, so the joists were exposed.
