I started by talking to Chris at Dolphin first. Then filled out the paperwork to got throught the MassSave energy program. MassSave came and assessed my needs and recommended all the work mentioned above. They told me what it would cost +/- a little. I think I wrote a check for $90 on the spot, and I expected it to cost around $300 when done. Dolpin insulation contacted me after they were informed by MassSave (I think it was a few weeks). They scheduled it a couple of weeks out from there. The did the work mentioned above. They were polite, knowledgeable and fast. They cleaned up well so I didn't even know they were there. After it was done, I paid the balance (I think $200) and thought I was done. MassSave actually sent me a small check back becasue it cost less than expected. I think the total cost was over $3000 and I paid less then $300. We noticed a real difference in warmth last winter. The floors felt warmer, and the overall house felt warmer. Our family room used to always feel cold (even has a skylight), but now it was as warm as the rest of the house. Our heating bills were lower, so we actually felt we could afford to turn up the heat another degree or two. It has been the #1 thing that makes our house feel warm. When we did the windows, we did not feel as increase in warmth -- they just work better. I think the blown cellulose insulation over the fiberglass filled in all the gaps that you get with fiberglass. I recommend that you get blown insulation before you replace your windows if your goal is to save energy and stay warmer.

On the day prearranged to begin the work, the Dolphin team arrived in a large truck that was hauling an even larger trailer. They got right to work, starting in the attic and working down to the second and first floors. I cannot overstate how impressed I was by the diligence, good humor, expertise, and care that were consistently demonstrated by Eric, Seth, Tom, and Max from start to the end of the project. Each day, they painstakingly unpacked mammoth hoses, myriad tools, drills, tubes, bundles of insulation materials, drop cloths, sheets of plastic used to contain the fluffy cellulose material that they were blowing into the walls, and multiple ladders. And at the end of every day, everything they took out was methodically returned to the truck and trailer. Insulation installation is a much bigger deal that I had imagined. It involves skill and muscle as well as a lot of just plain hard physical labor, heaving and lifting stuff and going up and down ladders and being pummeled all over with sawdust, cellulose puffs (light cottony bits that blow easily around and stick to sweaty faces and arms). But in addition, the crew had to deal with very hot, humid weather conditions, thunder storms, sudden downpours of rain, and very challenging parking spaces for their large vehicle. And the job was further complicated by several interruptions resulting from an irate neighbor who did not understand the nature of the work and demanded that various officials halt all work until they could demonstrate that the insulation installation was not a danger to health or the environment. When confronted with unexpected problems and complications, the Dolphin crew never lost their cool, but rather, worked through them until they were resolved, and they were invariably pleasant about it. The installation took longer than had been expected due to various interruptions beyond the control of the Dolphin team. They received terrific support from their colleagues back at their office. When a wire was inadvertently cut as they were drilling, the "home office" immediately arranged for an electrician to come and fix it. And they carefully measured and tested both before and after the job the extent to which air was coming into the house from outside. Having my house wrapped in a cozy protective cotton cloak is already making a perceptible difference. The house is definitely keeping cool with less air conditioning. And I'm amazed by how street and sidewalk sounds have been reduced. This insulation is a good thing! One final note: every day that they were here, one or other of the crew went through every space they had come in contact with during that day and swept and vacuumed debris and whatever else was on the ground outside or floors and steps inside. You would never know that they'd been here. AND, on Saturday when rain was predicted, someone came to the house from the Dolphin office to install protective seals that would keep the inside of the walls dry. This is a company that is hard-working, committed to improving the environment, respectful of each other and of their clients, very skilled in what they do, and they do it all with a smile. I don't think anyone could go wrong having Dolphin Insulation improve the energy efficiency of their home.

as noted above, they were able to start work within a month they arrived when they said they would, did the work to order, and cleaned up their staff were pleasant, and no fuss. all in all, a fine experience.
