Jim was great. Came out three times to review the project and let us know what he thought and could be done. Had many masons say the job could not be done, but Jim did it and it came out awesome. Already asked him to install spark arrestors on my chimneys. Highly recommend.

Jim called back within a day of me requesting an estimate and came by a couple of days later and followed up with a written estimate by email. He knew immediately what had caused my front steps to fail. He started the work in a week or so. I was please that he offered me some choices and what would cost more or less. He was able to use most of the existing brick and stone. He updated me each day on how the project was going. Jim was great to work with and did a fabulous job. I would recommend Celtic Masonry without reservation.

All aspects of the job went as well as it possibly could. The carpenter patched the roof so one couldn’t even tell a chimney had ever been there. The large metal chimney was removed without incident. The gas fireplace insert needed to be cut out so as to preserve the brick encasing the fireplace and the wood mantel. Jim then expertly installed the electric fireplace, doing a beautiful job both solidly securing the new fireplace and making sure the presentation of the fireplace was perfect! It was a pleasure to see someone take meticulous care throughout the entire job, which included thoroughly cleaning up afterwards.
Description of Work: Jim and his team removed a gas fireplace insert and installed an electric fireplace. They also removed a large exterior metal chimney used to vent the gas fireplace, and patched the roof once the metal chimney came out.

My backyard had a failing timber wall that the previous owner had propped up with posts, and had allowed it to lean into rapidly deteriorating shed. Jim's crew came in, removed the shed and timber wall, and also removed an intact but inadequate stone wall extending from the backyard to the street, a total distance of around 40 feet. He replaced that entire length with a beautiful split-faced masonry wall and poured a new concrete walkway to improve access to the backyard. Jim is the ultimate professional. He takes great pride in his work, loves to talk masonry and answer questions about the project, and is very transparent about pricing. The walkway was an add-on to the original project scope due to some unexpected circumstances uncovered during excavation, but he explained this at length and took photos so I could see why the additional work was required. I would not hesitate to hire him again or recommend his services.

Jim was fast and responsive while other contractors were not returning my calls. He was able to assess the situation and recommend a plan of action to fix water leaking into the house from an old improperly installed concrete walkway. While the project had a lot of unexpected twists and turns, Jim was great through the whole process, keeping me informed of what they found, and how they could go about fixing the problem. The work was done quickly and was top notch quality. We are very pleased with the results and best of all, no water is now coming into the house!

Celtic Masonry was my 2nd hire off of Angie's List so I had high hopes based on my 1st experience. I'm happy to say I wasn't let down! Jim was great and easy to work with. His initial response to my pro quote request was within a few hours and we scheduled a time to meet within a few days. After initial visit, Jim came back a few times to discuss the project with me as I was still trying to figure out what I wanted. Once I decided on a project/design, he sent me a formal quote (very reasonable and competitively priced - I had 2 other quotes to compare to) within 48hrs and I agreed to move forward. Jim told me I was slotted in for mid-June...by end of 1st week of June, Jim reached out to let me know he'd be starting the work the following Monday. As promised, they arrived bright and early! The work was also completed on time. Work came out beautiful (and I’m picky!)!! Jim was great to work with, anytime I reached out to him I’d have a response within 24hrs. I’m already getting ideas about my back steps and I wouldn’t call anyone else! Thank you Jim for such great work!

Last Spring 2017, Celtic Masonry replaced the bluestone on 2 existing sets of stairs on the front of my home with granite. Right away within weeks, we noticed that there seemed to be water collecting underneath the granite which caused it to always look wet. When we contacted Jim Bresnahan at Celtic Masonry. He eventually came back and decided that the only solution was to drill holes under the lip of the top stoop. He came back and did that, but it never resolved the problem. In the fall, 2018, after we had gone back and forth with him about the same issue, he said "If it heaves in the Spring, I'll come back and fix it." Well, now it is Spring and the mortar between the slabs of granite is starting to crumble. I called him and he said he would call me Friday, 4/25/18 about coming to take a look at it today, 4/26/18. He hadn't called so I called him. He immediately got defensive and started yelling and swearing at me and eventually hung up. He basically told me that he is "done" with this job, told me to F off and go F myself and to whatever I want because he is all done. Once again, he hung up. I was hoping to settle this with Jim, but he is not being cooperative. At this point, I feel like he should provide at least a partial refund because I am going to have to pay someone else to repair a job that I just paid Jim $3500 for. I also don’t have a copy of his insurance so I am unable to submit a claim. Shame on me.

Response from Celtic Masonry
After being contracted by [Member Name Removed] and her partner , I was laying the border granite , replacing the blue stone. The original blue stone had the joints line up with the steps. According to bonding rules, the vertical joints are to broken ( half bond) so I laid the stone that the border joint would fall in the middle of the steps. The next day [Member Name Removed] told me that I was wrong. I explained the bonding and she insisted that I change it. I said ok and removed the granite and laid out the stone with a larger piece spanning the steps and cuts on the end with [Member Name Removed] and she approved the new layout. I then purchased new granite cut and set the stones. The next day, [Member Name Removed]'s partner condescendingly told me that the stone was wrong ,even though , [Member Name Removed] had approved the new layout the day before. she told me she would reimburse me the cost of one stone( which she never did.) I then ripped out the old stone and set new ones. Upon completion, both complimented me on the quality of the work. About a month later, [Member Name Removed] called and told me that the stone looked "wet." I took a look and told her that granite is a dense stone and that the dislocation was probably due to the new roof that had be recently installed and that the discoloration would fade. As a precaution, I drilled more weep holes. [Member Name Removed] contacted me about the joints, I told her that I would call on Friday and take a look over the weekend. The Wednesday prior, I was in the area and went to the job. I didn't see any discoloration or any problems with joints, I took pictures , see attached. I worked late on Friday evening and received a terse message from [Member Name Removed] that I was supposed to call her, The next morning about 7 am , [Member Name Removed] called. I told her that I went by on Wednesday , she then started to yell at me. I take a lot of pride in my work and do my best that the customer is happy with the end result. However, I will not be verbally abused by anyone. I regret my choice of words in my response but not the sentiment. Celtic masonry's and my personal motto is "by the work, one knows the workman." I take a lot of pride in my work and my relationships with my clients. I have worked hard to gain a reputation as a quality craftsman as evidenced by the vast majority of positive reviews. I take exception to those who bear false witness and vindictively make a point of sullying my reputation and livelihood for their personal sport. I believe it says more about [Member Name Removed] and than it does me. With all due sincerity, James C. Bresnahan

It went extremely well. Jim was wonderful to work with, he was professional, respectful, neat and just a pleasure to deal with. This was a hard spring for contractors with all the rain and Jim did an awesome job of keeping us informed as to when he would be available to start the job. Once here he went above an beyond doing an exceptional job on our chimney. We need some work done on our front steps and Celtic Masonry will be the one doing it for us. Would not hesitate to give him an outstanding recommendation.

Wow... Working with Jim Bresnahan and his team was a true pleasure. I had a detailed quote very quickly and he kept me updated regularly on his schedule. (No easy feat with the wet spring we had.) I chose to replace the failing concrete with granite. The layout that Jim designed is beautiful and the work is perfect. As with any old house, you never know what you're going to find until the demolition is done. For me, it was extra carpentry that was needed before the porch columns could be replaced. Jim brought a carpenter with him and we've worked out a plan to address those items. I couldn't be happier with the job. Thank You Jim!
