They basically came and took one tree down. They did some insecticide work, trimmed and tromped our trees on the city property. They were very professional, and they were very prompt. They came in and they did the job and left. There was an issue of permitting, but they were able to get around. I wouldn’t say their pricing was high, but certainly higher than average. They probably could have done the job cheaper but you know they had extremely experienced trained arborists working for them. They were one of the major’s in the area. The pricing was high, but was not unreasonable. We have used them in the past, and we will use them in the future.

I had hired Arborway many years ago to remove a tree from my yard, so I called them to inquire about a quote to trim my neighbor's trees back from my house. When I called, I was told that if I wanted to schedule an appointment for a quote, it would take several weeks due to the fact that they were still busy after Hurricane Irene. The woman I spoke with recommended that we simply have one of their arborists stop by the house when he was able to and then he would call me to discuss the work, probably within a week, so that's the option I took. Coincidentally, I ran into the arborist as I was on my way out of the house one day. We chatted briefly about the job, and soon afterwards, I received an estimate in the mail. The quote was within 5% of another quote I got for the same job, so it seemed reasonable, but I didn't like the fact that I wouldn't have met the arborist if I hadn't accidentally run into him when he was at the house. I like to be able to meet with the people who are going to do the work, or at least meet someone who represents the company so I can get a feel for their expertise and professionalism. As it turns out, our neighbor hired their own tree trimmer to cut the trees back, so I didn't have to hire anyone for the job. But I wouldn't have hired Arborway due to the way they arranged for the estimate. Although it may have been the most efficient way to provide an estimate, it didn't seem to me like the most professional way.
Description of Work: Provided a quote for $870 to prune several (about 5) of my neighbors trees that were growing over my roof.

Response from Arborway Tree Care Inc
The first part of this customer’s report seem to be trending in our favor. She understands that we’re backed up with emergency work from Hurricane Irene, and appreciates the fact that we will nevertheless attempt to provide her an estimate for her non-emergency work in a timely manner. She states that we offered the non-appointment option to speed up the process and, she says: “that’s the option I took.” It’s clear from her narrative that Arborway Tree Care did not take the option of a scheduled appointment off the table. The choice was hers. She also states that she was pleased with the reasonable price she was quoted. So far so good. But then, four months after this series of what appear to be perfectly reasonable and businesslike interactions, she posts a bad report on Angie’s list where her sole complaint is that she doesn’t like the very option which she herself selected!

They did a very neat job. They cut down the tree as promised and took all the debris away. You couldn't see that any work had been done. They left the stump at the level that they promised. When I was a bit taken aback by the price, they did offer a ten percent off if I was willing to wait until they were ready to do it when they could find an opening and I took advantage of that. It was $2600.00 for the big tree and for the rest of price it was primarily trimming back and pruning. I think it was $4000.00 altogether, but I am not sure. They are reliable and neat. They do show up on the day they promise. I am waiting for them on an as available a price to get to come back and remove the stump.
Description of Work: I used Arborway Tree Care in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts for tree removal. They took down a very large tree plus a lot of other little trees about four months ago.

Professional and knowledgeable throughout the process, in person and on the phone. All estimates were provided by email, my preferred method. Actual work was completed very quickly and workers left my property cleaner then when they arrived. Provided great information about the dying tree and offered suggestions for a potential replacement. Staff was friendly and communicated the process clearly.

It took a extra time and money to finish the job satisfactorily. It seems they could have advised us better.
Description of Work: Though they took down the willow tree, we were disappointed that they did not include removing the roots in their estimate and they did not remove the wood chips. Therefore we ended up paying another $1000 to clean up after them. If you hire them, you better be able to spell out every particular because they do only what they are told.

Response from Arborway Tree Care Inc
This complaint contains many misrepresentations. First of all, the person filing the complaint had no interaction with our company whatsoever. All our dealings were with a different condo member, who negotiated and signed the contract, worked directly with our office on the scheduling of the work, was satisfied with the quality of the work, and paid the bill in full and on time with no complaints about the job. Furthermore, she lists a number of complaints about the contract which seem to indicate that she never actually read the contract. Contrary to her statement, we had a written contract, signed by their condo representative, for grinding the stump of the willow tree (which she refers to as “removing the roots”). As to not removing the wood chips from the stump grinding: their signed contract states in no uncertain terms that the pile of wood shavings remaining from the stump grinding “can be used as mulch, or disposed of in the same way you dispose of your leaves and other yard waste.” She complains that “If you hire them, you better be able to spell out every particular because they only do what they are told.” How is this a bad thing? Isn’t this the whole purpose of signing a written contract? So the contractor spells out every particular and only does (and bills you for) what he is told? She complains that it “took extra time and money to finish the job satisfactorily.” False. Whatever they spent that additional $1,000 on, it was not finishing the work they hired Arborway Tree Care to do. It was additional work that was not part of our contract. (And if they paid somebody $1,000 to rake up and remove a pile of wood shavings, that’s the company who should be getting complaints on Angie’s List!) She rates us a C for price. How is that possible? They signed a contract to do specific work for a price that they considered appropriate (and in line with the competing bids they obtained) at the time of signing the contract and at the time they paid their bill. How did the price suddenly become unreasonable 6 months later? She gives us C ratings for Responsiveness and Punctuality. The condo had to remove a fence before the stump could be ground. They informed us on Monday May 16 that they would be removing the fence in two days and they would like us to grind the stump on Friday, May 20. We ground the stump on Friday, May 20, as scheduled. How is that anything less than an A rating for Responsiveness and Punctuality? She rates us a C for Professionalism. Everything stated above indicates that Arborway Tree Care was completely professional throughout this entire process.

They didn't have to do much, because I researched things pretty well on my own,and I planted several good trees already. But, the guy who came, I believe his name was Steve, was very helpful in identifying the trees and shrubs around my house. He also identified some things that looked like weeds, but they were not...they were going to turn into trees if I didn't get rid of them. He identified a landscaper I could use to achieve my goals in the yard. He didn't charge me a dime, and he wouldn't accept a tip. Very nice, knowledgeable guy. When I need to prune the trees hanging over my yard, I will call them...good people.

I had a very large tree fall during a storm and land mostly in my neighbor's yard. Arborway Tree was very prompt and very helpful in removal of the tree and branches from my neighbor's yard. There was some confusion about utility wires etc. and method of removal. I called Arborway Tree at least twice just for advice and Steve was way prompt in coming by each time to assess the situation and give me advice. Once I gave them to go ahead to proceed they were prompt in getting what I wanted done. My neighbor's property was cleaned up to his great satisfaction and I must say to mine. I will not hesitate to use Arborway Tree Company again.

They are very good. Most of the time they come out when I am not here to give me an estimate and to do the work, then I pay him once I come home and am satisfied. They will make an appointment with me if I want to discuss the health of a tree or what needs to be done with a tree. They are much cheaper than other companies in the area.

I first contacted Arborway Tree Service late last year to have them look at the large Oak tree in my side yard. I wanted to know if the tree was in good condition (I had just moved into the house the year before) or if it would eventually have to be removed. This would have been a large undertaking since the tree is about 40 feet tall, and covers a good part of the yard. They came out and told me that I had a beautiful, healthy Red Oak tree. They did a root fertilization on the tree for the winter. I contacted them again this past summer about pruning the tree. It had a lot of dead wood and had grown over the telephone wires and the roof. I hired them to do the pruning. They came out a couple of weeks ago. They went right to work. They pruned quite a bit of the tree, going up into the tree, walking on branches to reach the areas to be cut, and mulched it all in a wood chipper. I am very happy with the way the tree was pruned and with the way the men just went to work and completed the job. I would definitely use them again. I really like the tree and hope to keep it around for a long time

The workers were great. They did the work well, talked to me about what I needed, reported on the health of my trees, and talked me out of some work that they said wasn't necessary. This was the worst service experience I've had in a very long time. Arborway had told me they had a 6-week back log of work so we scheduled the work to be done on 8/24/10 (when I spoke with them in early July). The date for the service came and went and the work was not done. When I called to ask what happened, I was initially told that they had been "rained out" and would need to reschedule. Two days later, I had not heard anything so I called back. This time, I was told that they would not be able to do the work because of the "restrictions" that one of my neighbors had put in his permission letter. This neighbor had indicated that he did not want the pruning to go further than his property line which seemed like a reasonable request and which Arborway had known about from mid-July when we contracted for the work (they had his letter back then). I asked to speak with the owner of the company to register my complaint and was told that was not possible either with no further explanation. I was told that the estimator would give me a call the next day, but I'm still waiting for that call and probably will continue to wait for a long time! As I said, this was the WORST service experience I've had in a very long time.

Response from Arborway Tree Care Inc
This client was enraged that Arborway Tree Care refused to cut back his neighbor’s trees without signed permission of the owner of the trees. He was belligerent and verbally abusive to Arborway Tree Care ‘s employees on the telephone, and he has posted false reports with the Better Business Bureau and Angie’s List. He falsely states that Arborway Tree Care completed a job for him for $150 on September 1. In fact ATC has never done any work for this client. This may be an attempt to increase the damage of the F rating, since it is Angie’s List policy to give “more weight to a report where work has been completed.” Rather than compose a new response, we quote below our response to his Better Business Bureau complaint, which addresses the same issues. ATC response to this client's complaint posted at the Better Business Bureau: Arborway Tree Care, Inc. (ATC) does not dispute the general chronology of events in this client’s description, but finds that there are several factual inaccuracies that must be addressed. 1) First and foremost, it was this client who was belligerent, insulting and verbally abusive (at one point actually screaming obscenities) to ATC’s representative on the telephone and not the other way around. Three people in the office at the time of the phone call heard ATC’s representative’s side of the conversation and will testify that she was calm, reasonable, and respectful at all times. They can also testify to ATC’s representative’s account of the belligerence, insults, and verbal abuse that she had been subjected to by this client during the call. It was also clear from this client’s statements on the telephone that submitting a complaint to the BBB was simply an additional act of unnecessary belligerence on his part. 2) The crux of this whole matter is that one of the terms of the written contract between this client and ATC was that we would require written neighbor’s permission to prune the neighbor’s trees on behalf of this client, and one of his neighbors did not give the necessary permission, and therefore we could not legally proceed with the work. 3) This client states that his neighbor “slightly modified the language in his permission form”. This is not the case. The modification was so drastic that it made it impossible to perform the described work. Here is the exact language added by the neighbor: “No pruning will be done from my property, and pruning will not cross the property line.” We did not cancel the contract immediately upon receiving the altered permission form because we wanted our foreman to take a look at the tree to determine if it would in fact be possible to perform the pruning with these restrictions in place. (In some cases it is possible to make proper pruning cuts using a pole saw without entering the neighbor’s property, but that did not turn out to be a viable alternative in this instance.) When our foreman arrived on the scheduled work date, a torrential rainstorm had started and he would not have been able to do the work at that time. But he also determined that the neighbor’s restrictions could not be surmounted. It was not physically possible to perform this particular pruning of this particular tree without setting foot on the neighbor’s property. Furthermore, even if it had been physically possible, which it was not, the further restriction that pruning must not cross the property line meant that we would have to leave large, long branch stubs on the tree, with no side branches and no foliage on them. This is an improper pruning practice which ATC will not engage in. It is unsightly, unhealthy for the tree, and can create a future safety hazard as the large stubs die off and decay. It is also a violation of American National Standards Institute, Standard Practices (Pruning), [ANSI A300 (Part 1)-2008], which all responsible tree services adhere to. 4) This client states that “I have now lost more than 3 months in trying to get this tree pruning work done”, and “Arborway should compensate me in some way for the delay”. In fact, this client himself put off the work for almost two years after receiving our original proposal in September of 2008, and then reactivating the project this summer and signing an updated proposal on July 15, 2010. Also, he was in agreement with ATC’s 6-week backlog, which would have made the work date fall at the end of August. So, if we had been able to do the work on August 24, it would actually have been ahead of schedule. Conclusion: It is Arborway Tree Care’s position in the matter of this complaint that no settlement is necessary as this client did not in fact suffer any financial loss, property damage, or unprofessional conduct at the hands of ATC. This client’s back neighbor has denied us permission to properly prune the tree that belongs to the back neighbor. Neighbor permission to prune the tree is an essential term of the contract that this client signed; without permission we cannot prune the tree. Accordingly, we have refunded this client his deposit for the work.

Overall, I continue to be pleased with this firm. I would have liked a little more personal sttention (chitchat, hand holding), and the wait between 1st call--mid-april, I think--and final removal seemed long to me, though I understand it's their busy season. They were very professional - from the initial arborist Steve who came out to assess property and provide recommendations to the cutting crew. Neighbors next door noted they thought they did an exemplary job. Had damage to the deck result after a large tree limb fell and fractured several pieces of deck wood panels, but before I could call to inquire, Arborway had contacted their contractor to come and repair the deck. The contractor contacted me and explained what he would need to do and also did a thorough job inquiring about the deck stain, etc. Very pleased with overall response to the unfortunate incident - deck restored to original status or even better wth the wood panels that were replaced.
