Schmidt Painting

It went very well -- after a couple of weather-related delays (can't paint if the temperature in the house is too low). Derrick had to juggle some of hi sporjects, but got to our project in a timely way and did a great job. We will use Schmidt Pinting again.

The Angie's List Big Deal was 4 man-hours of drywall repair for $99. Additional hours would be billed at $50, and we would be responsible for the cost of materials and supplies. Derrick (the owner) responded promptly to our call for a proposal and explained thoroughly what would be involved along with a binding estimate for additional hours required. His crew would take care of all furniture moving; we were responsible only for fragile items. We asked if the work could be done while we were on vacation, and he was perfectly agreeable to that. We gave him a key, and left town for a week. Upon return, the job was completed, the cleanup was thorough, and the walls were ready for paint and baseboard (performed by us as previously agreed). We were very pleased with his performance and would hire him again without hesitation. (Concurrently with the drywall, we used the contractor for a painting Big Deal to paint our ceilings. This was likewise professionally done but, as a different category, is discussed in a separate review.)

This was my second experience hiring Schmidt Painting and once again, I was impressed by the level of service, quick turnaround and high quality of work. The owner responds to you personally and makes all the arrangements. He also recommends the best products for the job. The painters arrived on time, were polite, worked very efficiently and left the site as they found it. The ceilings look brand new; they did a great job and the price was very reasonable.

I purchased a Big Deal but the provider could not schedule an appointment.

Great experience - Derrick was a great help in picking out the colors and spent time making sure we found the perfect paint color. THe paint team was very clean, efficient, careful and the job was completed on time. Looks great.

Overall the job was done well. There were a few hiccups with colors of paint and supplies and then on the last day a different painter than had been there three previous times arrived to finish up. When I asked him to clean up the paint splatters he did not feel he should have to do that because he "was only sent to do the painting". He made an attempt to remove some of the splatters but clearly was not interested in doing so and I said, "well you don't think I should have to do this, do you?" He ended up leaving because I did not feel he was going to do the job cleaning it up that I would. This was not an easy task with all of the detail work and the painters were precise and neat and very respectful. Although their score is reflective of the lack of the detail clean up, I am considering hiring them to do another job in the house.

I signed up for the big deal and tried via email and telephone to schedule the appointment. About a week later, I finally reached Derrick Schmidt to schedule the repair. It was just after a major storm so its was not surprising the soonest he could schedule a time was a full month out and we agreed to a date/time. When noone arrived the morning of the scheduled repair, I telephoned Derrick and he told me did not have it on his calendar. He offered to send someone out the following day, which was fine. His worker came to do the repair the following afternoon. In completing the repair, we had a couple issues. First, he accidentally broke the glass in a $900 light which as it turns out can not be repaired or replaced. Second, the width of the replacement drywall was thinner than the existing ceiling drywall. He compensated for the 1/16" difference by filling the 43"x 48" area with a fill compound. This fill was not dry by the time he wanted to leave but he believed the sanding I would need to do would be minimal and then I could prime/paint the area after. The next day, it was clear that more repair was necessary. There was a ridge where the new/old drywall met and there was a significant amount of further fill and sanding required. Initially, Derrick told me that the worker would have to pay for the light repair - I could not agree with this in principal since it was an accident and further was probably more than this person makes in a week, I agreed with Derrick that if they came back out and finished the repair properly, sanded, and then painted the full kitchen ceiling area that we could settle the issue. Derrick agreed to have the worker come back out the following Saturday. The worker showed up in the morning and was there about 7 hours working on the repair of the ceiling and then painting the kitchen ceiling. In general he worked very hard at getting things corrected and I applaud his effort. However, both Derrick and the worker indicated the house was "far" and on both occasions that the worker was here, there was more emphasis on the 25-30 miles than on getting the repair right so at the end of the 7 hours when there was still some minor sanding and then finish painting left to do, I decided I would just finish it myself the next day when everything dried. That was two days ago. I have since sanded the area and there are still many irregularities in the plaster. I plan to continue to try to repair the work and will then finish with the painting. While both the worker and Derrick seem to be very nice, conscientious folks, I think that I would have been better off overall finding someone who actually was interested in doing the work and had a little more expertise with this type of repair.

I have always believed that a true measurement of a company is how they respond when something goes wrong. During this process we hit a few bumps in the road and without hesitation they made it right and would not wrap up the job until I was 100% satisfied. Getting people to care this much about their company and the quality of the work is becoming more and more rare. I will definitely get Schmidt Painting to bid work in the near future.

Schimdt Painting did a wonderful job. The crew was very professional, friendly, courteous, hard working, and responsive.. Eric personally closely supervised the work. What they did and how they did it exceeded my expectations. One of my neighbors saw their work and decided to have them paint their house also.

Schmidt Painting arrived on time, worked was completed satisfactorily, cleanup perfect and done without disruption to living areas. Professional attitude. I would use them again and recommend them to others without reservation.

I was pleasantly surprised when Derrick and his crew showed up a week or so EARLIER than promised to paint my house. I had never used Angie's List before, and had a couple of friends suggest other painters to me. But I'm so glad I went with Schmidt Painting! They did a wonderful job, with as few disruptions as possible. I couldn't believe it was the same house when the job was finished. Truly. I've caught a few of my neighbors circling the house slowly, as though THEY can't believe it either. What was once the most rundown-looking house in the neighboorhood now has a sparkling "facelift." I would highly recommend Schmidt painting to anyone who's seeking a top-notch, timely and reasonably priced painting job. I'm already planning to have them come back in the winter and work on the INTERIOR of the house.

Contract Work performed: Pre-cleaning (bleach/water) shingles, clapboards, trim, gutters, downspouts.Waited 3 days for outside of house to dry. Also, if there is rainy weather that occurs during the paint process, the crew waits 2-3 days to dry.Sanded (with power palm sander) shingles, clapboards, trim....prior to applying "Mad Dog" primer. Mad Dog is $80/gal. and Derrick only uses the product on the most weathered, worn area's. Mad Dog is an awesome product. Seals and provides a sticky surface for the paint or stain to adhere to. Google "Mad Dog" primer.....! Derricks crew had damaged a deck slider and gazebo screen. They repaired and installed new screen. End result, outstanding. Overall, Schimdt Painting is one of the Cape's best, if not the best (and I have experience with 3 other Cape painting contractors). Timely, efficient, highly productive paint crew, high-tech quoting system, excellent website. Wife and I are extremely pleased. We highly recommend. Feel free to include me as one of your references, for potential Schmidt Painting clients.

He had very good workmanship. We liked him and we were very happy. We priced it out and I think the price was fair.

The owner came out to the house and gave us a quote and gave us options for color.On the day the painting was done, they arrived exactly on time and were very professional.The painting was done in about 3 hours.We are very happy with the results

Their 3 pass approach to deck "renewal" took my weathered old, lichen infested & stained deck from looking derelict to looking brand new. Quality of the crew's work & attention to detail of all the angles on my deck with railing spindles & benches, top and bottom were key to the beautiful outcome. Derrick provided links to the spec sheets for the products he was recommending and was willing to discuss alternatives. They came when agreed, worked dilligently & finished as required. Schmidt was the middle bidder. I selected them because their work plan seemed more complete, as well as their materials were good quality so the price seemed reasonable. I couldn't be happier with the outcome. DOs & DON'Ts: It was difficult to compare the bids as they all used different products & had different plans (wash/stain, bleach/wash/stain, Bleach/wash/2 coats, top only, top & under, etc). Next time I will give them a form pre-specifing the various options I want to consider; this should help minimize the 3 of follow-up emails with specific questions. I will also ask, IN ADVANCE, for the links to spec sheets for all recommended products.

We hired them through Angie’s List. They have done a beautiful job! We have had some bad experiences before, but this painter was just fabulous! He came out, spent about an hour and a half looking around the house. He sent us a written estimate that same night through email. We scheduled for a later date in July, but he called us today and let us know that he had an opening. We agreed to have the work done today and he sent his crew out. He has a lot of integrity and the crew he sent to our home could not have been any better. They were very considerate and professional. There was no mess and they even cleaned up after themselves. He is just great and is top notch! We are very pleased, happy, and impressed with his services.

Derrick and his crew painted our house last fall. This review is delayed because I just got back to our summer cottage to check the workmanship before writing a review. The painting was done after we left for the summer. I am very pleased with the work. Painting was a challenge due to shutters being put on the house early, a week of rain, and then the arrival of hurricane Irene. Despite the confusion and hurricane, the work was done to quality standards within the estimate provided. I chose Schmidt Painting because of Derrick’s pursuit of customer satisfaction and have not been disappointed.

We're very happy with the outcome - the deck looks brand new. I think they are extremely busy this time of year - but were consciencious about meeting the date that we had laid out in the contract. We got 3 quotes - Schmidt was slightly cheaper than the other two. Overall, we were satisfied and would recommend Schmidt painting to others.

It has taken me a long time to submit this review, as I do not like to say negative things about anyone. However, since I relied on this site to select Schmidt Painting, I feel it is necessary to accurately report our experience. In a nutshell, the work took well over two months to complete and trim work and large areas, such as those areas under the gutter spouts were missed. Our house was started, we hit a week of rain, and then the painting crew disappeared. I was actually told they needed to move on to other jobs. Due to a serious accident in my family, I could not be available to supervise the work, but tried to keep things going from a distance. I left many texts and phone messages, but these were ignored or if contact was made, a promise to resume work was too often broken. Following " completion" of Schmidt's work, I hired a handyman to finish the work and paid him about $1,200 to do what should have been done. The spouts that were removed were only slotted onto the top gutter and not re-anchored with the aluminum slats. They were left dangling and promptly fell off of the house. Entire areas of the house behind low lying shrubs and other smaller spots were not painted at all. A few shingles that were cracked or missing and some rotting trim boards were supposed to be replaced (repair work was in the contract) and were not. And on and on and on! We have owned and maintained several homes and have never had a more disappointing experience with another contractor. I feel he took advantage of our tragic circumstances and obviously, does not take pride in the quality of his work. I recently received phone and written responses from Derrick regarding my review. He offered to fix or compensate us for the problems we experienced; however, I did not take him up on his offer, since I have had these issues taken care of. Derrick was sincere in his efforts to remedy the situation and for that I am grateful. My neighbor is satisfied with the work performed on his house, as Derrick came back and took care of any problems that surfaced. (Note: I did not recommend Derrick to him AFTER the work was done, but just as the job was commencing. I felt that Derrick was an upstanding individual at the time, and in view of his efforts to correct this situation, I still do.) For these reasons, I am amending my ratings accordingly.

Overall our experience with Schmidt Painting couldn't have been better. Our kitchen is clean and bright.

Again, we haven't used Schmidt Painting as yet, but would recommend them. They were professional in their follow up.

The work was done fast and on time and the quality was very good. The owner works very hard to assure you are 100% pleased with the work. Definitely a company you can trust. We were not present when the work was done and they were trustworthy and cleaned up after themselves. We would recommend them to do your painting project.

Derrick and his crew did a wonderful job painting our house. From the first phone call Derrick was very professional and friendly at the same time. The crew took great care in respecting our property by not trampling on plantings, picking up after themselves, keeping the jobsite clean, and being very neat with the paint itself, by not getting it all over everything.I would, and will call on them in the future! Also they were extremely fast and efficient! Great job, Thank You!

Derek was responsive throughout the entire process. He came out and provided an estimate within days of my phone call. He got the job done quickly with excellent results. I'm off Cape for most of the year. That adds a level of anxiety to making sure things get done according to plan. Derek was highly reliable and produced a quality job. I have no reservations in recommending him.
