We got roughly 4-5 man days a month and nothing but lip service to our concerns over quality and schedule. The remodel added a small 2-story bump out to the kitchen and expanded a bedroom above. This might seem a grand plan for a 'kitchen' company. But, we saw some other projects and they were on the same scale. From the get go we were second or third in line for attention. Groundbreaking slipped, foundations slipped further in the schedule. day after day of no-shows. We went round and round over the schedule and when, exactly, we were to take priority. It never happened. They got ahead of us in terms of $$ paid for what had been completed and I could never bring myself to walk away from the $$, choosing instead to forge ahead and let them make it right.
As each phase of the project was 'completed' the list of mistakes and punch items grew. Without fail, each sub, plumbing, framing, electrical, etc, had major follow up issues I could never get addressed. Ultimately, a contractor friend saw the building and called into question some of the framing versus the architectural plans. We brought in 2 structural engineers and documented the mistakes. MAJOR issues. Through poor workmanship and lack of an onsite project manager, each sub just cut the corners they could get away with and L&W simply chose to ignore our complaints. Now, we're into the 'remediation' almost as much as we paid for the entire project. They called for almost no inspections and we've had to pay the new guys to take responsibility for the work so we don't have issues.
Since they were fired, we've been contacted by several of the subcontractors who worked on our job looking for $$. Apparently, another great quality of Lewis & Weldon is that they slow pay their contractors or simply cut the $$ owed under bs claims.
For example, a subcontractor quoted a price for the job based on a schedule and getting in and out by a certain date. Since L&W are so bad at project management, the dub had to come back numerous times to try and get things done around other work. When they asked for additional money for a bigger amount of work they were simply not paid. We had at least 2 framing companies, 2 electricians, 2 masonry companies, and 2 insulation companies. All had issues around being paid.
L&W is now counter suing for the remainder of the contract they were fired from! 12 mos late. breach of contract all over the place. I can't imagine how much longer they'll be in business under this name. Most of the subs on the cape are aware of their bs.
You've been warned. They come across like they're your best friend and looking out for you. You are nothing but a check for the next ski weekend.
