J. Foster, his carpenters, and his subcontractors were excellent from beginning to end. J is a trained as a structural engineer and he builds to last. He saved materials and maintained the architectural integrity the home wherever possible, and matched the style (Dutch Gambrel/colonial) whenever new details were needed. Coordinated very well with subcontractors and vendors. Financial transactions were clear throughout the 9-month project. J. Foster Homes is an excellent choice for either a major renovation or for a single room remodel.
Description of Work: Near complete gut-level renovation of a 1900-built home. New sunroom, windows replaced, reconfigured second floor, new Ipe deck, new HVAC, new plumbing.
The job went very well, and we are delighted with the outcome. Because Jay is a structural engineer, we felt confident we could trust him with every aspect of the job.
Description of Work: Jeremiah Foster and his team built a wrap-around front porch onto a Victorian home, and resided the entire house with cedar clapboard. He also put in new foundations and supporting columns for an overhanging porch area. The project was done extraordinarily well and with great care (i.e., his team spent 2 days cutting clapboard pieces at 17.5 degrees to accommodate the seam around our bow windows).
We brought him in on a job because we weren't sure another contractor could handle the structural engineering aspects of repairing an older house. Working with Jay has been great - this is our second job with him in 1 year. He makes sure the owner is fully prepped on the details of the job, and will sketch out profiles of different molding, joins, or other structural configurations until the owner understands what is intended. The project was about 3 weeks delayed, but most of that was due to rain days in the Northeast.
Description of Work: Jay (Jeremiah) Foster and his team did extensive renovation work on our Victorian. - new soffits, with new braces and replacement of rotted wood - removed 2/3rds of 3 story home cedar siding and replaced it with new cedar siding - new sills and casings on 16 windows - new flashing over windows and doors, new rubber roof over porches and bow windows - new architectural trim around exterior baseboards - new insulation (worked with 3rd party blown in insulation company) Jay also arranged for: - dumpster delivery and removal - site clean up each evening - consultation on materials (he knows the difference and cost between the Hardiplank, Azec, and the different woods available)

Jay oversaw the process personally, sourced the lumber, and gave us cost-saving options at every step. We did not choose every cost-cutting approach, but were grateful that he was sensitive to our budget. He is a structural engineer by training, so we felt comfortable with his approach. Furthermore, he has a very good sense of design, and has a strong sense of what works well with the rest of the house. As an example of the dedication he showed to our project: he personally milled custom molding (on his own lathe) because it would look better with the design. We had a great experience with Jay and his team, and will be working with them again.
Description of Work: We built a relatively high-end wrap-around porch on our Victorian house. This involved putting in new footings (because part of the porch would bear the load of a second story), attaching the porch frame with lag bolts to the existing sill, building out the frame, attaching the sustainably-grown mahogany decking, and building the (relatively ornate) stairs, post, rails, and balusters. While we had a relatively expensive project, he was referred to us from a friend who had a <$15,000 porch built, so he does work on a range of projects.
