The whole process with Nicholson was excellent. The owner, Mike, came to give me a quote for the project (one of four quotes I got for this project). I very much appreciated that he would not cut a particular corner that another company did on a neighbor's unit even though that possibly meant I couldn't install a HE furnace (depending on permission to vent through the side wall from the HOA). I had the quote promptly (within 24 hours) and an additional version just as quickly when I asked for the numbers on a different brand. The installation took 2 days, as I was told, and Jeff and Jimmy were excellent. They were on time, professional and did an great job. Whenever there was something that I needed to make a choice about, they clearly explained my options to me. The only thing they (and I) forgot about was rehanging a work light in the garage because it had been put to the side in a safe place. Since that took a whole minute to rehang, no problems there from me. I look forward to having Nicholson handle my HVAC maintenance contract.

Well, my shock was right at the outside, the plumber, who was fantastic, wanted to discuss costs. I told him I had the Angies list coupon that I paid $99 to get $140 worth of labor including cleaning a drain. I thought the coupon paid for everything. He proceeded to tell me that the kitchen drain cleaning costs $331 in total. They would take off $140 from coupon so I still owed $190. I told him I was upset. Felt like a bait & switch scam. He told me he could leave but I'd have to pay $55 for him just showing up. Instead, I called Nicholson Plumbing. I was told I'd get a call back. In 5 minutes, the owner, Mike Nicholson did call me. He said this confusion has happened with these coupons before. Mostly, the customers don't call him but give his company an F rating on Angie's list. We discussed how I thought my $99 coupon did PAY FOR ENTIRE DRAIN CLEANING. That is the confusion. IT does not. It is put towards the whole cost. But Mike was great. We negotiated. He offered to have me pay $243 - $140 coupon value. So I paid $103. Total out of pocket with coupon was then $202. I felt much better about that. I did tell Mike that I thought $331 was an exorbitant price for drain cleaning. He explained that when licensed plumber does it vs. drain cleaning co (Roto rooter) that is an average price. I did some googling and told him I found average cost with plumbers around $200. We begged to differ. Regardless, Nicholson plumber was efficient, clean, and fixed my issue. I am very happy with the service and price I paid but the CONFUSION the Angie's list coupon created is unwarranted. And the SUPRISE of ADDITIONAL COSTS and having to pay $55 if I sent NIcholson away was ridiculous. Angie's list needs to be VERY CLEAR on these coupons as to the ADDITIONAL COSTS that the consumer will incur. This was not clear or explained in the deal I got. Mike, the owner, said he too has tried to work with Angie's list on this issue as it comes up a lot. Nothing seems to be happening on Angie's part so we, the consumers, have to go through this kind of nonsense. Not really right or fair. I implore Angie's list to fix this issue. I even called Angie's list and explained the issue. They said they'd work on it with Nicholson Plumbing. Let's see what happens. BUY CAVEAT EMPTOR - buyer beware!!!!!!!!!
Description of Work: My kitchen sink was clogged. had backed up into dishwasher. He had to snake the kitchen drain and get into the disposal and fixed it.

We recently purchased a new home and wanted to replace the boiler because it was over 30 years old. Nicholson made the process very easy. We needed to get the installation done relatively quickly in order to take advantage of a MassSave rebate. We had an estimate only a couple days after I first called. Unlike some of the other companies I called, Michael, the owner, took the time to carefully explain all our options and what work would need to be done. Not only was it the most thorough explanation, it was also the cheapest estimate we received. When it came time to have the boiler installed, the technicians, Steve and Jed, did a fantastic job. They arrived on-time and were friendly and courteous. The work was done efficiently and cleanly. They even replaced a part of the gas piping that was not up to code and not part of the original estimate for no extra charge. The old boiler was removed and the basement looked even cleaner than when Steve and Jed started. The office staff was also very helpful in handling the payments and MassSave paperwork. I would highly recommend Nicholson plumbing for their professional and customer-service oriented work.

Went well. Brandon and Al were very professional, courteous and thorough. Brandon found a drain line in the furnace that was damaged. I was right beside him when he found it so I was able to see the issue( I always wonder why there were a couple of rust spots in that pan). They provided me with a detailed quote and I did all the recommendations except one. Yes they might not be the cheapest around but I don't mind paying a little more for professional and quality work, especially when it comes to my HVAC system. They also wore shoe covers when they had to walked through my house.

This crew was fantastic from the pricing and estimating stage, to the scheduling, through to the work completion. As with previous work I've had this company do, I was presented with 3-levels of options to decide between. Everything was well-explained at that time, but I did not feel pressured to choose one option over the other. I knew this was going to be an expensive thing to have done, but the estimates for all 3 levels were less than I had expected to pay. When it came time to schedule the job, Heather was wonderful to work with. They were very professional during the 3 and a half days it took to complete the job. When it was finished, I was given a thorough explanation of what they had done, what everything was, when to change the filters, etc. Looking at the work they had done, it looks very well thought-out and neatly done. The area they were working in was (I think) left neater than it was when they found it! Their job was so well done that the inspection seriously took less than 2 minutes. I would definitely recommend looking at this company if you're looking to have any HVAC or plumbing done.
Description of Work: This was a large job. My furnace was replaced and moved from a closet upstairs to the basement, my AC unit was replaced, and a full-house humidifier was installed.

I was told that the minimum charge for an emergency call was $250, which was reasonable. The service technician diagnosed the problem and determined that the compressor starter capacitor was bad and replaced it. In addition to diagnosis fee, I was charged $440 for this capacitor, which sells for not more than $50 !!

Good Morning, Here at Nicholson we ensure our customers are getting the finest and most quality service and materials we can possibly provide. I’m sorry for your dissatisfaction with the pricing as we try to be up front with cost for any repairs before technicians proceed with any work, following customer’s approval we will then proceed with any repair options but only after we have the customer’s permission based on the pricing that we present to them before any work is done. Again our pricing reflects the most premium materials to ensure that job is completed sufficiently and to our Nicholson Standard. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to discuss further. Sincerely Mike Nicholson

He arrived on time and did the work. I bought this as a Big Deal. It was an A/C tuneup and inspection. Disappointed. did not include cleaning the coils, only inspecting them. He strongly suggested that I spend an additional $325 to have the coils cleaned because they were clogged and another $227 to replace the capacitor because they tend to fail. (We just replaced the capacitor two years ago). It felt like a bait and switch to me. Cleaning the coils has always been part of any A/C tuneup we've ever done before. Rather than spend the $325 to have the coils cleaned by Nicholson I called my oil provider and they came out and did a second tuneup that included cleaning the coils for $140. I don't expect I'll use Nicholson again. Our oil provider does good work but I had thought I'd use an Angies List Big Deal to find a good place that specializes in A/C so that down the road when we look at replacing our central A/C I'd know someone good to use. Instead found someone I would not want to use.
Description of Work: This was an A/C inspection bought through a Big Deal. I was disappointed. The tuneup only included inspecting the coils and not cleaning them, which they wanted to charge a lot extra for.

The NICHOLSON service plumber, Rick, initially had some confusion about getting to the Grohe Tub/shower faucet Valve system (installed in 2003) and then had to go to the local Grohe parts supplier to get the valve. Standard toilet inlet valve and flapper replaced without incident. Also had a very small water flow intermittent in a Toto toilet in another bathroom. Prices offered to do all jobs were: Replace Grohe Cartridge $585, Replace fill valve in Kohler standard toilet $276 and "Rebuild" Toto toilet fill valve and flapper $679 and these prices were AFTER a 10% discount! Researching the cartridge on line found the retail price of the cartridge to be around $150. A 4X mark-up for installation I think is too much! A good toilet inlet flush valve and flapper can be found for under $25. The charged installation price was 10X the parts price and the access to the toilet was unencumbered. I negotiated the amount with Rick and he "contacted" his office and I got the price for the Grohe cartridge and toilet valve system installed with NO future guarantees for $860 (down from $864) but now included their annual Service Plan valued at $149. Rick and Nicholson did deduct the discount coupon for $140 (that I purchased on line for $99) which then brought the cost to $720 plus the $99 which makes it $819. Work was done professionally and Rick was personable My use of the provider in the future would depend highly on more reasonable pricing.

The work was performed as I had expected and as had been discussed. There were not deviations to schedule or cost. Mike explained all of the equipment which he recommended as well as offering other equipment at different price points. He reviewed the reasons behind his recommendations which were specific to our house. The up front diligence and thorough explanation of the planned work provided me ample information to do my own review of what was proposed. The technicians were prompt, and professional in their work. Once the work was completed they walked me through all of the steps to use and maintain the system. Additionally, the office staff reviewed the best available rebate options and the technician presented me with the completed rebate forms with all needed materials attached. I simply had to review, sign and mail it in. I was extremely pleased with the work performed and I would certainly use Nicholson again in the future.

We hired local plumber Ron Bulova to do the work. He spent one hour, did a fantastic job and charged us $167.
Description of Work: After we purchased a special to get $140 worth of plumbing services including drain cleaning for $99, my wife was presented with a $900 estimate to do 3 small projects: replace an outdoor water spicket, unclog a bathroom sink, and to tweak a bathtub plug. It was pretty convenient that the man of the house was traveling for work. The total amount of time it would take to do these projects was about an hour. When we questioned the exorbitant estimate, the guy said that these were "book prices" and that they are booked 3 weeks in advance. Before the plumber left, he demanded that we pay him a $55 fee (that was allegedly in the fine print). When we declined and asked for a full refund, they did oblige.

Dear Member, Thank you for providing us feedback. When we scheduled the appointment we spoke with the husband/[Member Name Removed] who did not indicate he would be “traveling for work” and implying that it was “convenient the man of the house was traveling” it extremely unfair since you booked the appointment yourself and chose the time. The trip fee was not “allegedly in the fine print” as you are stating either. When you initially booked the appointment you were also notified of our 55 trip fee over the phone, and you agreed to move forward and have us come to your home. So this was not sprung on you at all as we are always up-front and transparent with all of our pricing. That is what makes us different from many of our competitors, particularly the ones that charge by the hour and spring a price on you at the end once the work is already done. We at Nicholson feel it is important to inform our customers with all their options for repairs and upgrades so the customer can have the option to choose what is right for them. This is all done before any work is started that way our customers are not faced with any surprises at the end. We feel it is good customer service to be able to provide our customers with prices before we begin any work, empowering them to decide ahead of time if they want to move forward and with which options. As I stated when I spoke with your wife the day of the service visit, Nicholson strives for 100% customer satisfaction and stand by good our reputation in settling customer complaints and/or misunderstandings. Thank you for acknowledging that we did not charge you the trip fee. As your wife stated to me over the phone, she prefers a company that charges by the hour and I am happy to hear that you found a smaller contractor that was able to assist you with your plumbing needs.

I agreed to pay their fee of $75 to inspect and evaluate a poorly functioning Central air-conditioning system in a newly acquired single-family home. After his inspection, the Nicholson tech explained that the reason why airflow was poor in all areas is because the rooms only had 6 inch supplies, and that by increasing them to eight inches the system would work better, which was not only absurd but also totally wrong. I've since learned by different and competent HVAC installers that the real problem with the system is far more serious in that the main supply and return trunk lines were inadequate and improperly configured for a 2.5 ton system. After explaining to the Nicholson tech that I was prepared to pay several thousand dollars to fix my system, the technician gave me his assurance that I would be contacted when an estimate was prepared. I never heard from them again. In retrospect, I realize now that before the Nicholson tech left my property, he knew full well that he was not going to follow up, presumably because of the complexity of the problem. However, before leaving the Nicholson tech was determined to get more money from a naive homeowner by suggesting a $214 purge of the PVC drainage line because there was water in the tray under the air handler. This 15 minute service consisted of carrying his shop vac into the attic, vacuuming the water that had collected in the drip tray, and purportedly purging approximately 10 feet of drainage PVC which was full again with water the 24 hours later, despite the technicians assurance that water would not collect like that again. I've since learned by competent HVAC people that water is collecting under the air handler because the system is freezing up due to poor ductwork resulting in too much condensation. The bottom line here is that I paid Nicholson nearly $300, wasted my valuable time and received nothing in exchange. Review update: In reply to Nicholson's response to my review, and contrary to what he says, they made no attempt to reach me by email, phone or snail mail after the initial July 2014 service call when they took nearly $300 of my money and never followed up with a repair estimate as promised. I have found that this scenario is very common with service providers who decide they don't want your business but make promises anyway. Mr. Nicholson did not perform the service personally and evidently has been misinformed by his technician as to what transpired. There was no mention of the main supply and return trunk runs being to small for the unit, but rather only the dimensions of the supplies in each room, which would not have solved anything without increasing the size of the main trunk runs. Also, the condensate line was not clogged, it was simply not draining because of shoddy drainage pipe installation and inadequate ductwork causing the system to work overtime. After Nicholson's Tech allegedly cleared the clog, the drainage tray was full again the next day despite the tech's assurance that it would not happen again. As for my call to your company in January, I had an emergency pipe freezing issue at a tenant's property and was looking to hire any plumber who would respond, even an undesirable one. Unsurprisingly, Nicholson was not available. As for another negative review of a different AC company, you are correct Mr Nicholson. The company reviewed was also unprofessional and Angie's customers should beware of them as well. It's true that I have not returned calls from Nicholson subsequent to the submission of my reviews on Yelp and Angie's list. There is simply nothing to discuss.

Mr. [member name removed], I am sorry you were not satisfied with the service call from July, 2014. I remember your review from 7/26/14 and 7/31/2014 on Yelp and we were very concerned about the disappointing experience you had and tried several times to get in touch with you, however we never received a call or email back from you. If someone is not satisfied with our service it is important to address it right away to resolve the complaint, taking responsibility for any misunderstandings that may have transpired from the service call. We here at Nicholson Plumbing Heating & AC pride ourselves in our customer service and quality of work. When we arrived at your home our technician performed the diagnostic on your air conditioning unit and reported his findings you. The findings were that the duct was not installed properly and it was undersized for the unit and you had a clogged condensate line. In order to get the air conditioning running for you on that hot July day last year, with your approval, he cleared the condensate line in the attic. This price was provided to you upfront and before we began any work. The bill reflected the $75.00 diagnostic fee and the $214.84 for the technician to clear the condensate line. Following that visit we left you two voicemails as we wanted to discuss the options and what needed to be done for permanent repair, however we could not reach you. Our one service visit to your house was in July, 2014 and considering the level of dissatisfaction visible from your multiple poor reviews posted about us, I am a bit perplexed as to why you reached out to us again requesting a service visit in January, 2015. Perhaps you decided to give us a second chance? However, now a year later 5/19/2015 you have posted yet another poor review of us now on Angie’s List regarding our service from last July 2014. I called your cell phone again on 5/21/2015 to see if you were available and willing to discuss the service call from last July, 2014 that you were still unhappy with I left you a voicemail with my office number and personal cell phone to call at any time so we could resolve this and do what we could to resolve it. In addition we noticed that you posted a poor review just a few days ago of another HVAC company complaining about the same issues. If you are still in need of an HVAC company we are still more than willing to work with you to remedy the situation. As I mentioned above, we pride ourselves in quality work and we are sorry that you felt that that the service you received did not meet your expectations. Our commitment to our customers is very important and feedback of any kind is significant to our growing success and provided. Please know that you can call me at any time to resolve this issue at 508-881-1500. Best Regards, Mike Nicholson

Work was performed on time and on budget. Mike's team arrived promptly when they said they would and completed the job as planned. The onsite team discussed options with me, with regards to where I would like the piping as well as walking me through the electrical setup required. The worked effectively while in the house and cleaned up at the end of the job. Thoroughly professional job, end to end. The office staff was fantastic both in keeping me, continually informed throughout the process as well as handling the available rebates. I worked with Alex on the proposal, deposits and on the scheduling. The technical staff was available to answer questions or concerns I had both prior to the contract signing as well as right upto the installation.

I like to feel comfortable when contractors are in my home and both Rick and Al are super guys. I'm sure the rest of the team at Nicholson is just as wonderful! Heather in the office is terrific too - super nice and very helpful! I highly recommend Nicholson Plumbing!

I had very bad experience with this provider. Their estimate is way too high. I ended up losing $99 for some complicated reason. Will never use them again!!
Description of Work: They came to my house and gave me a quote for the work.

Response from Nicholson Plumbing Heating & Air Conditioning Inc
Member, You have informed us that you have had a very bad experience with another Angie's List contractor and then had your coupon transferred to us because Angie's List did not feel you we obligated to a refund. We provided you will all of our pricing completely up-front and only asked you to pay $55 which is a charge you knew about before you booked your appointment with us. In turn you insisted on using your $99 coupon for it since you could not get a refund, we reluctantly accepted. Our interactions with you were a bit uncomfortable and aggressive and we agree that we are not the right service company for you. We wish you the best and hope that you are able to find a company that suites what you are looking for. Best, Mike

Basement had flooded. Noticed that it was coming through the plumbing system. Called Nicholson and they were at the house within the hour. The technician (Ryan) was VERY knowledgeable, punctual and professional. He explained in great detail what the cause might be and the associated costs.....there were no pricing surprises. Ryan was thorough in his repair and clean up. Would ABSOLUTELY recommend!!!

I scheduled an appointment over the phone and they were able to come out the same day. Unfortunately, the appointment prior to mine had a major issue, so they had to reschedule for the following morning. They provided a discount which I thought was a nice gesture if we were to move forward with the repair. Rick arrived on time for the initial inspection and was able to complete the service the same day. He was very nice, professional and the work was done quickly. So far, our sink is no longer leaking, so a job done well.
