I called them and a very nice man came out and gave me an estimate. I showed it to a friend, who is a landscape architect, and she said she thought it was a bit high. So, I called someone she knew, and not only was his estimate higher, but he required a very large crane (we live on a small street) and a police detail. So, I went with Specialized. Once I agreed on the work and a price (discounted because I agreed to having all work done) they came within 2 weeks (called ahead). They worked hard for about 7 hours, with a crew of 5 or so people, climbing the very large tree, taking it down piece by piece until it was a stump. They then went around our (fairly small) property and properly pruned some birches, a holly tree, and two dogwoods which had gotten very spindly. They were polite and everything was cleaned. They left no debris. I am looking forward to a winter without worrying that the very tall and large tree might fall on us or our neighbors, and for next spring, when the area around which the tree stood is flooded with sunlight. Maybe we can finally have a garden!
Description of Work: Removed a very large tree without a crane (location made that equipment impossible), pruned several smaller trees, removed all wood and debris.

Having just bought a new house one of the first things we wanted to do was remove 2 extremely large pines that were in the backyard since the pine cones and needles were falling over a good portion of the lawn and the two trees were taking up quite a bit of space to either side of the the center of what would have been a very spacious back lawn. We had some concerns because the larger and more profuse pine was also hanging over a portion of one of our neighbor's greenhouses and we did not want to have any damage issues if it was left up nor in the process of taking it down. Because the only access to our backyard is a 4 ft. wide chain link fence gate from the driveway beside our house and because our backyard is surrounded on all sides by neighboring yards, we knew we could not have a bucket truck come in to do the tree removal. This was a bit worrisome considering that both trees where a good deal taller than our house and the larger one had multiple trunks and already had one large branch that was splitting. I found Specialized Rigging & Tree Care on Angie's List and I felt reassured by the video of them on a job, that is posted on their website. They definitely seemed to have experience in bringing down large trees without the necessity of a bucket truck in potentially close areas. So I called and set up to have a free estimate done for the work we wanted. Originally we were thinking of having 3 trees taken down, the 2 large pines in the back yard and a Norway maple in the front yard. But luckily for us when Jay came out to give us the free estimate he pointed out that because the tree in the front yard was so close to the road, we ought to check to see if it is a town tree before having it removed. He gave us an estimate for having all 3 trees removed and the stumps for all of them ground. Following his advice I did check with the town and found that the front yard tree "is" a town tree and that we would have been fined if we had had it removed. I let Jay know and he gave us a revised estimate for taking down just the 2 large pines in the backyard. The estimate actually ended up being exactly what my husband had originally told me it would probably cost before we had spoken to anyone (because of the size and placement of the trees) with an additional discount for being an Angie's list member. So I had no hesitation whatsoever in accepting what was a very fair price for the job. Jay set up a date for the job with my husband but then that date ended up conflicting with when we were having work done by National Grid so we called Jay and he rescheduled it for the end of the following week with my husband. Unfortunately my husband forgot that his sister's wedding was set for the end of that week so when I asked him to call Jay and see if we would still be able to have the work done if we were not home, Jay was happy to just move the date to the beginning of that week to accommodate our scheduling issue. He was very nice about the rescheduling and at no time did he make us feel as if we were being troublesome, which was very much appreciated by me since I was dealing with the stress of juggling various contractors doing various jobs on our new home. Jay had told us that the job would take approximately 3 days to complete which was perfect since we would be leaving for the wedding the day after the job was completed. Jay and his crew showed up on all 3 days exactly when he said they would be there and he and his crew were extremely polite and pleasant during the entire 3 days. They were very quick to respond to any questions that I had as they went along and Jay told me more than once to feel free to let him know if I had any concerns at any time. I was there during the entire job and I saw how hard they worked, and how well they did. They did not get even one branch in either of the neighbors' yards which is amazing considering how much overlap there was from the trees but it was obvious during the entire job that they really knew what they were doing and took great care with the rigging to try and insure the safe placement of the the falling branches and wood and then the final dropping of the trunk. It was really amazing. They also were very efficient in removing the branches as they went along for grinding and raking up at the end of each work day. I was definitely impressed. My husband was extremely impressed with how efficient they were in how much work they got done and how well they cleaned up the site at the end of each day, since he was at work while they were there and never actually got to see them in action. On the 3rd and final day, Jay had the stumps ground while he and his crew finished removing the rest of the logs from the giant multi-leader pine that had hung over part of my neighbor's greenhouse. He asked if we would like to keep the stump grindings as mulch and filler or have them remove them and we decided to keep them since we had areas of the lawn we needed to fill before we could level the lawn thus saving us a little in buying mulch ourselves to do that. So he had the grindings raked up neatly in to piles where the tree stumps had been. He was also very careful to make sure that the roots for our neighbor's pine tree which extended onto our lawn were not ground along with the stump and roots for the tree we had taken down there, so that no damage would be caused to our neighbor's tree. All in all he and his crew did an excellent job and I would definitely use them again and I highly recommend them to anyone for this type of work. In fact I already did recommend him to my neighbor when he mentioned that he was thinking of taking some of his trees in the backyard down. One other thing that I thought was noteworthy to mention is that Jay is also an arborist. While he was there to do the free estimate (before we had hired him to remove our pines) he pointed out to us that our little decorative tree out front (not the town tree) had too much mulch around the base of the trunk and he got down and moved the mulch away and showed us how the mulch should be set around the tree so that the root flare is not covered by the mulch since this will suffocate the tree and can cause problems like the girdling that our town tree is already suffering from. It was very nice free advice, that I was even more impressed with when I was watching "Ask This Old House" on PBS just 2 weeks later and watched and listened as the arborist and gardener on the show walked through exactly the same advice that Jay had given me about my tree and showed how to avoid the "volcano mulching." It was really cool and impressive because "my" tree guy had told me about this first.
Description of Work: The removal of 2 extremely large pines that were in close proximity to (and hanging over) neighboring yards, from a backyard that was inaccessible by a bucket truck and grinding of the stumps and removal of all wood, brush and grindings as desired.

We had lightning strike our biggest pine (3 foot diameter at base) a couple of years ago. By this spring it was clear that the tree needed to either come down or have major surgery. It is behind our house, without access to cranes and heavy equipment. The rest of our trees and shrubs were overdue for professional attention. We had three companies, all from Angie's list, come in to look. Specialized easily won the bid. The owner came himself to do the estimate, and it is clear that he is passionate about good service. He was enthusiastic about trees, willing to try to save the big pine, while being realistic about the long term prospects. He was _not_ dismayed about the lack of crane access, and was as happy about the small shrubs as doing the big trees. The job was done over two days. The crew was careful, polite, and pleasant to have around. We had 3-4 people in the trees at times and 3-4 more on the ground. The work was done neatly, quickly, and with no damage to house or other landscaping. I plan to use Specialized again, when the big pine needs additional work, and also for routine pruning and tree/shrub care. Great work.
Description of Work: Major overhaul of lightning damaged pine tree, pruning of other pine trees, maple tree, cherry tree, ornamentals. Reshape and prune all shrubs, including yews, Mountain Laurel, azaleas, and others.

They were competent, efficient, safe, knowledgeable and honest. They removed all the debris afterward. We highly recommend them and will use them again. Also, they are fully insured which was an important factor given the possibility of something going wrong / somebody getting hurt with this kind of work. We highly recommend this company and will be using them again.

Very good customer service from the first phone call through the completion of the work. They came out promptly, spent time explaining their process, and provided a quote within one day. (**note-the 'dead' of winter is an excellent time to have your trees trimmed!). The crew showed up on time, and worked with amazing care to protect themselves and our property. Despite heavy winds and snow, they worked several days in a row to complete the job. Watching them high up in the trees with the rigging equipment was fascinating; these guys really know how to maintain safety and work efficiently. Watch the website video for a great example of the crew in action. Also, Jay, the owner, was very honest and knowledgeable about trees and what was in our best interest. They even ground some extra small stumps and hauled away brush as a free perk for hiring them for such a big project. I plan on hiring them again next winter to prune the remaining pine trees. Excellent company!
Description of Work: Removed approximately 24 trees, and pruned large pine trees. They also ground the stumps and cleared away some extra brush piles left by the previous owner.

We were very pleased with their work. It was a very difficult tree to access and several other companies made recommendations to use vehicles to access the tree, which would have necessitated removing limbs from some other nearby trees. Specialized Rigging said they specialized in doing their work by hand and by actually climbing the tree. Other companies determined that they did not want to climb the tree because it was diseased, so we appreciated Specialized Rigging?s suggestions. Their price was really competitive and the work was wonderful. We were very happy and would use them again.
Description of Work: This is the second or third time we have used them. Most recently, they took down a very, very large diseased ash tree. It was sitting in the corner in the back of our yard close to our neighbor’s carriage house.

They were wonderful. I really like to appreciate them now because after all the storms that we had, we had only small limbs coming down and not big ones. They were terrific and I have nothing negative to say about them. There were no trucks that ran over my property as they climbed the trees. They worked together very well as one person up on a tree and the other was on another tree and they communicated well between them. We have big trees that are about 100 feet tall and it was like the kind of pruning that I might do once in every 5 years or so. They did a beautiful job of clean up as well. Their price was a little expensive but the job that they did was of high quality.

They have been very, very careful. They don't use a truck, so they didn't have to drive through our yard. They climb the trees using ropes instead. We would absolutely hire them again.
Description of Work: They cleared dead wood from really tall trees we have. They pruned them so that they will grow healthily. The two guys are Arborists.
