Work was finished two months late, he was non-communicative and unpleasant, and work required lots of oversight. Wanted to use cheaper, lower quality materials than were in the written budget (I assume to make more profit), and I had to constantly deal with this. Will never use him again.
Description of Work: General contracting work for kitchen flooring, counters, plus window installation and basement installation.

The job took 5 months to complete, nearly three months over the original contracted timeframe. After it was installed, there were still leaks in the roof, some so bad that they resulted in additional sheetrock damage. To Alden's credit, he always did his best to fix these problems, and has promised to come back and fix the one remaining leak. My biggest concern about these fixes is that caulk seems to be Alden's solution of choice, and I fear that 5 or 10 years from now I'll be fixing the same leaks again. Since Alden underbid this job, he probably didn't make much money on it, it took him longer than he thought, and he ended up doing a barely acceptable job. If he had bid a higher amount, we would have been able to take the next bidder, who was a larger company with more employees and more experience installing metal roofs on complex jobs (multiple ridges, valleys, skylights, etc.). I feel kind of burned, but I look forward to having the one final leak repaired and finally being able to repair my sheetrock.
Description of Work: Our roof was over 20 years old, and was defective fiberglass shingles to begin with. It was leaking. We put it out to bid in April of 2007 and Alden was the low bidder by a substantial amount (thousands of dollars below the next lowest bid). This was a big job, and we were afraid he had underbid it, but since we were paying for this with a loan from HCDC, we had to take the low bidder. Alden stripped off the old roof and disposed of it. He installed new plywood, felt paper, and a MetalSales Classic Rib metal roof. He was supposed to install bituthane around all skylights, chimney, and in all valleys. I hope he did this correctly, since we had to remind him about it after the felt paper was already installed. This included flashing around two gables, a chimney and cricket, 2 vent stacks, a hot water heater stack and removing and replacing/flashing 4 existing skylights. He also installed a vinyl replacement sliding window and replaced a failing skylight on our walkway with a small roof section. He replaced trim boards on the gable ends, chimney, and around the new window.
